Choose by jurisdiction and source coverage first
Start by listing the work your team actually performs, not the jurisdictions a sales page lists. For each matter type, record the governing country, state, province, court level, regulator, language, and relevant date range. Then identify the sources a lawyer must be able to inspect: official statutes and regulations, reported and unreported decisions, docket material, citators or treatment data, agency guidance, practice notes, treatises, and internal precedents.
Build a source-coverage checklist
- Does the plan include the primary law relied on in your jurisdiction, or merely commentary about it?
- Are historical versions available for the date of the advice?
- Can the system search local courts, tribunals, regulators, and administrative decisions that matter to the practice?
- Which secondary sources are licensed, and can your team open the full text rather than a summary?
- Are foreign-language materials searchable and quotable where your matters require them?
- Can an administrator see which databases a user’s answer was allowed to use?
Ask each finalist to answer the same narrow source questions with the same account configuration. A broad claim of “global coverage” is not a substitute for confirming a particular court, reporter, regulation, or historical edition.
Inspect the evidence trail before trusting an answer
A useful research answer is inspectable. For every material proposition, the interface should let a lawyer open the underlying authority, locate the quoted or paraphrased passage, and determine whether the source still supports the proposition. Citation formatting alone is insufficient: a citation can be syntactically correct while pointing to the wrong passage, an outdated version, or authority that does not stand for the stated rule.
Questions to demonstrate live
- Ask a proposition that requires a controlling case and a statutory exception.
- Open each cited item from the generated answer; confirm the court, date, docket or reporter reference, and pinpoint location.
- Read the surrounding paragraphs to check whether the quotation is complete and whether the holding is limited.
- Run a treatment or validity check and note how the product surfaces amendments, overruling, negative history, or conflicting authority.
- Edit the question to change one jurisdiction or date and verify that the source set changes accordingly.
- Export the answer and citations, then confirm that links and pinpoints remain usable in the team’s matter file.
Keep the citation as a lead for lawyer verification, not as a guarantee. Independent evaluations have found incorrect and incomplete answers even when systems provided retrieval support.

2024 evaluation
Magesh and coauthors reported 65% accurate answers for Lexis+ AI and 42% for Westlaw AI-Assisted Research in one evaluation of the versions and query set tested. The same work reported hallucinations and incomplete answers across the tested tools. Those figures are historical, task-specific observations; they are not a current universal leaderboard, and they do not measure document-review performance.
2026 statutory-survey study
Afane and coauthors reported 64% accuracy for Lexis+ AI and 58% for Westlaw AI on a distinct multi-jurisdictional statutory-survey benchmark. The task, jurisdictions, prompts, and evaluation design differed from the 2024 work, so the percentages must not be compared as if they were repeated measurements of the same system under the same conditions. The study documented reasoning and retrieval failures in statutory surveys.

Together, the studies support a workflow rule: a lawyer must check the authority and the reasoning, and a buyer should measure performance on the team’s own representative matters.
Separate research capability from document-review capability
Document review begins with your files, not the vendor’s legal corpus. During a pilot, upload a controlled sample and test the complete path from ingestion to export.
Ingestion and organization
- Supported formats, OCR quality, scanned pages, spreadsheets, email containers, attachments, and password-protected files.
- Maximum file size, page count, batch size, and processing time.
- Folder, matter, workspace, and role permissions, including ethical walls.
- Deduplication, version recognition, family relationships, and preservation of metadata.
Analysis and review
- Clause or issue extraction with page-level references.
- Side-by-side comparison of versions and identification of additions, deletions, and changed obligations.
- Consistent answers to a predefined review protocol across a batch of documents.
- Ability to distinguish “not found” from “not applicable” and to show the passages supporting each result.
- Reviewer comments, coding fields, escalations, approvals, and an immutable activity history.
Output and defensibility
- Exports that preserve document identifiers, page or paragraph references, reviewer decisions, and timestamps.
- Redaction tools that do not silently alter the original evidence.

A research assistant may summarize an uploaded contract yet lack queue management, reviewer coding, or defensible exports. Conversely, a review workspace may organize documents without providing the authoritative research corpus needed to answer a legal question. Test both workflows independently.

Run a representative, side-by-side evaluation
Use identical prompts, documents, permissions, and time limits for every finalist. The goal is not a marketing demonstration; it is a record of how much verification your team must perform.

- Select questions from closed matters or approved synthetic files that represent routine, difficult, and high-risk work.
- Include at least one question requiring a controlling authority, one with conflicting or amended law, and one multi-jurisdiction comparison.
- Assemble documents with clean text, scans, tables, defined terms, cross-references, tracked changes, and intentionally similar versions.
- Create a reference answer reviewed by a lawyer, including required authorities, acceptable alternatives, known traps, and the correct “not enough information” response.
- Freeze prompts and scoring rules before running the tools.

Keep raw outputs, corrections, and reviewer explanations. Report results by task and jurisdiction instead of collapsing them into one score. A tool may excel at locating a clause while underperforming on statutory surveys.
Security, confidentiality, and governance questions
Before uploading client material, obtain written answers that match your organization’s policies and professional obligations. Ask about encryption in transit and at rest, data residency, subprocessors, retention and deletion, backups, tenant isolation, administrator access, audit logs, incident notification, and whether customer content is used to train a model. Confirm how prompts, uploaded files, generated answers, and telemetry are handled separately.
Map permissions to matter roles and ethical walls. Decide whether users may paste privileged or personally identifiable information into prompts, whether local redaction is required, and who approves new workspaces. Document a procedure for correcting an answer, preserving the original output, notifying a supervising lawyer, and recording the final authority checked.

List the systems the product must work with: document management, email, practice management, e-discovery, identity provider, collaboration tools, and billing or knowledge repositories. Ask whether the connection is a supported, permission-aware integration or merely an export. Test search indexing, version synchronization, matter naming, access revocation, and audit records with a non-production account.

Measure the number of clicks and context switches required to move from a question to a verified citation or from a flagged clause to an assigned review task. A technically capable system can still fail adoption if lawyers must download files, rename them manually, and reconstruct the audit trail elsewhere.
Cost and contract comparison

Confirm that the database and historical coverage are licensed. Re-run the question with the court and date specified, then search the official source independently.
Uploaded documents are summarized but not reviewable
Check OCR, page references, version handling, and export fields. Require a passage-level link for every extracted issue and test a batch with known redlines.
Users paste confidential material into an unapproved workspace
Restrict account creation through identity management, publish an approved-use policy, and monitor workspace and export logs. Provide a sanctioned intake path for sensitive matters.
Performance changes after an update
