The safest alternatives to an AI griefbot are memorial spaces and archives that preserve what a person actually left behind without generating new words in that person’s name. For most families, the practical choices are a memorialized social profile, an obituary guestbook, a controlled archive of existing account data, or a non-interactive collection of photographs, letters, recordings, and stories.
These formats differ in who can see or add material, who controls the account, how dependent the memories are on a platform, and whether anything simulates the deceased. The comparison below helps you choose a format that supports remembrance while keeping consent, privacy, and emotional boundaries visible.

What makes an AI griefbot different from a memorial?
A griefbot (also called a “deadbot” in scholarly writing) is a digital representation built to imitate a deceased person. It may be trained on messages, posts, photographs, recordings, or other personal data and then produce new text, speech, or conversational replies. A memorial page, guestbook, or family archive does not create statements attributed to the deceased; it displays or collects material that people can identify as authentic records or as tributes written by the living.

That distinction changes the ethical and practical questions. A static page still requires decisions about privacy, moderation, ownership, and long-term access, but it does not normally suggest that a generated response came from the person who died. A conversational system raises additional questions about whether the person ever consented to this use of their data, whether people know they are interacting with a simulation, who is allowed to use it, and how it will eventually be retired.

Hollanek and Nowaczyk-Basińska’s 2024 ethics paper recommends meaningful transparency, mutual consent from the data donor and the person who interacts with the service, adult-only access, and sensitive procedures for retiring deadbots. Those are scholarly recommendations, not a universal law or a clinical treatment guideline. The Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL), announcing its 10th Innovation and Foresight Report on 17 November 2025, likewise described postmortem data management as a legal and ethical issue involving clearer rights, public awareness, and regulation of artificial-intelligence use. Possessing a person’s messages or photographs therefore does not automatically establish permission to make a speaking simulation.
The options in this guide keep the emphasis on remembrance rather than imitation.
At-a-glance comparison
| Option | What it preserves | Who can contribute | Control and access | Does it simulate the deceased? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Memorialized social profile | The person’s existing profile and permitted posts | Friends and family within the platform’s rules | Managed by platform settings and, where appointed, a legacy contact | No | Convenient for an existing community, but dependent on one provider |
| Obituary or hosted guestbook | Tributes and memories written by living contributors | People allowed by the host’s access and moderation settings | Controlled by the host; export and retention terms must be checked | No | Easy shared participation, with uncertain long-term continuity unless terms are clear |
| Digital-legacy plan | Existing account data selected for transfer or deletion | Designated people or an estate representative | Determined by the account holder’s instructions and the provider’s review process | No | Useful for stewardship, but not itself a remembrance space |
| Private story, photo, or recording archive | Copies of photographs, letters, recordings, and written stories | People invited by the family or archive owner | Set by the family; copies can be kept in more than one place | No | Requires someone to organize, back up, and maintain access |
1. Memorialize an existing social profile
A memorialized profile is usually the most natural choice when the person already used a social network and their friends are there. Facebook describes a memorialized account as a place where friends and family can gather and share memories. Existing content remains visible to the audience that could see it under the account’s privacy settings, while nobody can log in to the memorialized profile.
What a legacy contact can do
If the account holder selected a legacy contact, that person can perform limited administrative actions. Facebook says a legacy contact may pin a post, respond to new friend requests, update the profile or cover image, and request deletion of the memorialized account. The contact cannot read private messages, log in as the deceased, or edit past posts. Those limits protect the original account from being silently rewritten while still allowing basic stewardship.
How to set one up
- Confirm that the platform supports memorialization and identify its current request process. A family member or an authorized representative may need to submit proof of death and a relationship or authority, depending on the provider’s rules.
- Decide whether the goal is a memorialized profile, deletion, or preservation of selected material elsewhere. Memorialization and deletion are different outcomes.
- Ask the family what audience is appropriate. Existing privacy settings may expose material to a narrower group than a public memorial page, and changing the audience can itself be sensitive.
- Choose a legacy contact only if that person understands the limited permissions and is willing to moderate activity. The contact should not promise access to messages or private account content.
- Save important photographs or text that the family is entitled to retain in a separate archive. A profile should not be the only copy of irreplaceable material.
Best fit and limitations
Choose this option when the deceased’s social circle already gathers on the platform and continuity with the existing profile matters. It is less suitable when the family wants a platform-independent archive, private control over every contribution, or access to the account’s messages. The profile remains governed by the provider’s policies, technical availability, and privacy controls.

2. Create an obituary or hosted guestbook
An obituary page or guestbook gives living people a place to write memories in their own names. Legacy.com describes hosted obituary and school memorial pages where visitors can add memories. This format can be more welcoming than a locked social profile for relatives who never used the same network, and it keeps each tribute identifiable as a contribution from a living person.
Questions to answer before publishing
- Visibility: Is the page public, searchable, invitation-only, or restricted to approved visitors?
- Contribution rules: Do contributors need an account? Can anonymous posts be submitted? Can the family approve entries before they appear?
- Moderation: Who removes spam, harassment, inaccurate claims, or material the family did not authorize?
- Export: Can the family download the text, photographs, and visitor list in a usable format?
- Retention: How long will the page remain online, and what happens if the host changes its service or closes the account?
- Administration: Who can edit the obituary, and how is that person replaced if they become unavailable?
The available information about Legacy.com establishes the guestbook and memory-page function but does not establish all of its access, export, moderation, or retention terms. Read the current terms before treating a hosted page as the sole long-term archive. Keep an independent copy of meaningful contributions.

Set a clear prompt such as “Share a memory, a photograph, or something you learned from them.” Label photographs and recordings with dates or relationships where known. If several people are likely to contribute, name one moderator and publish a short rule against impersonation: contributors should not write as if they are receiving a reply from the deceased. That boundary preserves the difference between a tribute and generated speech.
3. Plan access to existing digital material
A digital-legacy plan is about account and data management, not about creating a memorial service. It helps a person decide what should happen to existing cloud files, email, photographs, or other account data after a period of inactivity or death.
Google’s Inactive Account Manager
Google identifies Inactive Account Manager as the tool an account holder can use to specify who should receive selected account information after inactivity, or whether the account should be deleted. The account holder chooses the inactivity period and the recipients or deletion instruction while they can still make the decision. This is a planning mechanism for existing data; it does not give the recipient a password and does not turn the account into a conversational memorial.

When no instructions were left
For a deceased person who did not configure those instructions, Google may review requests from an immediate family member or representative. Google does not provide passwords or login details. Closing an account can also prevent later requests for its contents, so a family should consider preservation needs before requesting deletion.
A practical preservation workflow
- List the accounts and devices that may contain photographs, letters, recordings, or documents. Include local storage and removable drives, not only online services.
- Identify the person legally or practically responsible for each request. A relative who has the files is not necessarily authorized to access every account.
- Review each provider’s post-death process and prepare the documents it requests. Do not assume that one provider’s policy applies to another.
- Preserve material the family is entitled to keep in a durable, access-controlled archive. Record when and where each copy was made.
- Only then decide whether an account should remain, be memorialized, or be deleted. Deletion is difficult or impossible to reverse.
This approach is especially useful when the family’s priority is recovering an existing photo library or correspondence rather than giving visitors a public place to post.
4. Build a non-interactive story, photo, or recording archive
A family archive can be a private shared folder, a printed album, a locally stored collection, or a combination. Photographs, old letters, voice recordings, and written stories are familiar remembrance practices. The Associated Press has described pictures, letters, visits to a grave, and private inner monologue as ordinary ways people maintain a relationship with someone who has died. A printed photo album offers a physical way to revisit images without a system producing a response.
Choose the format
- Private digital folder: Convenient for invited relatives, with permissions that can be changed as the family’s needs change.
- Printed album: Easy to browse without an account or device, but it needs a safe physical storage location and may not include every original.
- Audio or video collection: Preserves the person’s actual voice or mannerisms. Label recordings clearly so an authentic recording is not confused with generated audio.
- Family story collection: Each contributor can write a dated memory, identify the relationship, and note uncertainty rather than turning recollection into an official biography.
- Local archive with backups: Gives the family more control, provided at least two copies are maintained in separate locations and access credentials are documented.
Organize it so people can use it
- Create broad folders such as “photographs,” “letters,” “audio,” “video,” and “stories.”
- Use consistent file names with the person or event and an approximate date when known.
- Keep original files untouched and make edited copies for cropping, color correction, or transcription.
- Write a short note explaining who may view, download, or share each category. A family photograph may have different privacy expectations from a private letter.
- Give at least two trusted people the information needed to maintain the archive, without putting passwords in the same public document as the archive’s link.
The archive does not need to be polished to be meaningful. Its defining feature is that it preserves identifiable material and living people’s recollections without claiming that the deceased is responding now.

1. Who should see and contribute?
For a broad existing community, a memorialized profile may be easiest. For a smaller group, invitations and approval controls on a private archive may be better. A guestbook sits between those choices, but its real privacy depends on the host’s settings and moderation tools. Decide whether contributors need accounts and whether names, photographs, or stories can be downloaded.
2. Who will control the material?
On a memorialized profile, control is divided between the platform and the legacy contact, with strict limits on account access. On a hosted guestbook, the host controls the service and the designated administrator controls day-to-day moderation. In a private archive, the family can set permissions and maintain copies, but it must also carry the work of administration.
3. Is the original account needed?
If the goal is to preserve selected photographs or documents, use a digital-legacy process and an independent archive. If the goal is to let visitors see the person’s existing profile in its original social context, memorialization may be appropriate. Neither approach grants a right to read private messages.
4. How much platform dependence is acceptable?
A provider can change its rules, interface, storage practices, or availability. Treat a hosted page or social profile as one access point, not the only copy of irreplaceable memories. Export what the terms permit and keep a second archive under family control.
5. Would any simulation be emotionally or ethically acceptable?
If the family wants only authentic records and living people’s tributes, choose a non-interactive format. If anyone proposes a system that generates replies, label it clearly as a simulation and stop to address consent from the deceased’s data and from every person who will interact with it. The ethics literature recommends adult-only access, meaningful disclosure, mutual consent, and a sensitive retirement process. Those safeguards do not establish that a griefbot will help or harm every bereaved person.

Privacy and consent checklist
- Confirm which materials the family has the right to copy and share.
- Ask whether letters, messages, or recordings contain information about other living people.
- Do not infer consent to simulation merely from possession of a file.
- Tell visitors when a page contains an authentic recording, a living person’s tribute, or an automatically generated artifact.
- Use the narrowest audience that meets the family’s purpose, then expand only deliberately.
- Give contributors a way to correct or remove their own material where the service allows it.
- Decide who can request deletion, freeze contributions, or close the page.
- Keep an offline or independently managed copy of irreplaceable items.
- Review the arrangement after major family changes, such as a change in administrator or a request from a contributor.
Emotional fit and evidence limits
There is no established, general clinical result showing that griefbots heal grief or inevitably make it worse. Personal accounts and ethical arguments should not be presented as controlled evidence. A bereaved person may find a profile, album, or guestbook comforting, overwhelming, or unwanted at different times. The useful safeguard is choice: explain what a format does, allow someone to stop participating, and avoid presenting generated output as the deceased’s own continuing agency.
A static archive can also feel difficult if it exposes painful material or invites unwanted contact. Moderators should be prepared to pause contributions, restrict access, or remove a page when the family’s needs change. A remembrance space should serve the living people who use it; preserving every possible artifact is not automatically the right outcome.
A decision path for common situations
The person was active on one social network
Request memorialization, confirm the audience that existing privacy settings allow, and appoint a legacy contact only if limited stewardship is sufficient. Separately preserve photographs or posts the family is permitted to keep.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Relatives are spread across platforms
Use a hosted guestbook or private archive with a clear invitation process. Publish contribution rules and retain an export or independent copy of the entries.
The priority is recovering files, not public remembrance
Use the relevant provider’s digital-legacy or post-death request process. Expect review rather than guaranteed access, and do not expect passwords. Preserve selected material before closing an account.
The family wants a quiet, device-free ritual
Make a printed photo album or letter collection, optionally accompanied by a small private digital backup. No account, login, or generated conversation is required.
Someone is proposing an AI conversation
Pause publication. Ask what data would be used, whether the deceased ever agreed to this purpose, who would interact, how the simulation would be labeled, who could access it, and how it would be retired. If those answers are not clear, choose a non-interactive alternative instead.

A memorialized profile, moderated guestbook, digital-legacy plan, or family archive can keep a person’s presence available without manufacturing new speech in their name. Choose based on audience, control, data access, platform dependence, and emotional readiness; preserve authentic material separately; and treat any proposed simulation as a separate consent and transparency decision, not as the default form of remembrance.
