Best Alternatives to AI Children’s Book Generators for Making Illustrated Stories

If you want to make an illustrated children’s story without handing the whole job to an AI book generator, Canva offers a documented do-it-yourself route: generate images, arrange them in a design, and edit the pages yourself. Canva also lists two storybook-focused apps in its Marketplace, but they are separately developed products—not proof that Canva itself creates or endorses their books. The right choice depends on whether you need help writing the story, making pictures, laying out pages, or all three.

What counts as an alternative?

“AI children’s book generator” can mean an end-to-end service that drafts a story and illustrates it, or a set of flexible tools you use to make a book yourself. Those are different jobs. A design app may help with images and page layout without writing or composing a complete book for you.

For any candidate, check whether it drafts a complete story or expects you to supply text; how illustrations are made; whether it explains how to keep a character consistent across pages; what editing and layout controls it provides; and what files, resolution, print options, and page limits it supports. Also verify current pricing, feature limits, privacy terms, and rights directly with the vendor. A claim of AI-generated illustrations alone does not establish character continuity, a well-edited story, or print-ready pages.

Canva: a hands-on route with documented image and layout tools

Canva’s Magic Media can generate images from prompts, offer styles and layouts, place generated images in a design, and generate similar images. This can support an illustrated-story workflow when you want to bring or write the text and decide how the pages fit together. Canva notes that laws governing AI-generated content vary by country and that users may not have exclusive rights to generated material.

Magic Design suggests templates based on supplied images, text, or ideas. You can customize a suggested design using your own material, stock content, or AI-generated content. That is useful for assembling pages, but Canva’s documentation does not establish that Magic Design automatically produces a complete, publication-ready children’s book.

When this workflow fits

  • You want to control the story text, page order, image selection, and layout yourself.
  • You are comfortable checking each page for readable text and a coherent visual sequence.
  • You can verify that the export format, resolution, and any print requirements suit your intended use.

Canva Marketplace storybook apps

Canva’s Marketplace lists two apps specifically framed around storybooks. They may be more direct starting points than building every page from a blank design, but the listings are not independent evidence of output quality, consistent characters, or print suitability. Review each developer’s current terms and privacy policy before sharing personal information.

App What its Canva listing says Developer and access Important qualification
ChildrensBook Converts text descriptions into children’s storybooks Imagineers Studio Inc.; listing says free with any Canva plan Discloses permission to read and change design contents and upload media. Canva Marketplace listing
Childbook.AI Personalized storybooks with AI-generated stories and illustrations KWJ Team; listing says free with any Canva plan The listing does not by itself establish privacy practices, character continuity, or print readiness. Canva Marketplace listing

“Free with any Canva plan” is the wording of the listings, not a complete comparison of possible costs, limits, or access conditions. Check the live listing and app terms before relying on it. These are third-party apps in Canva’s ecosystem; their presence there should not be read as Canva developing or endorsing their outputs.

Choose by the work you want the tool to do

  • You have a story and want to make the pages: Canva’s image-generation and design tools support a hands-on assembly process.
  • You want a storybook-specific starting point: Try a Marketplace app’s current workflow, then inspect and edit what it produces rather than assuming the result is final.
  • You need an end-to-end book or print-ready file: Confirm that the exact service supports story drafting, page-level editing, export, and your intended print format. The available listings and Canva help documentation do not establish all of those capabilities.
  • You need recurring characters: Look for a clearly documented continuity feature and test it across several pages; do not infer it from general AI-image claims.

Check privacy, rights, and publishing terms

A child’s photo or identifying details deserve particular care. The sources cited here do not establish comprehensive privacy practices for the Marketplace apps, so read the relevant developer policy before uploading anything personal.

Canva’s AI Product Terms say Canva does not claim copyright ownership over AI input or output. They also say AI-assisted first-party written works such as books should not be represented as wholly human-generated or wholly AI-generated; creators remain responsible and should disclose AI’s role. Review the current terms that apply to your account and intended use.

Canva’s guidance on selling template-based work gives a children’s-book example: creators must add their own content and creative effort rather than sell a template unchanged. That guidance appears on Canva’s India help site, so check the applicable local terms for your region: Canva’s guidance on creating products for sale.

If you use OpenAI’s API to help write a book, OpenAI’s publication policy, updated November 14, 2022, says partly API-created first-party written works may be published when the AI role is attributed and clearly disclosed, applicable policies are followed, and a human takes ultimate responsibility. This is OpenAI-specific guidance and may have changed; check the current terms for the service you actually use: OpenAI publication policy.
