You do not need to put all of your gaming allocation into one themed ETF. The main alternatives are another direct gaming fund, a regional listing, a hand-built basket of game companies, indirect semiconductor or cloud exposure, or a diversified core portfolio with a small gaming “satellite.” The right choice depends on whether you want publisher revenue, the wider gaming ecosystem, infrastructure suppliers, or simply a controlled thematic tilt.
Compare each route by mandate, concentration, geography, currency, trading costs, tax treatment and portfolio role. Fund names and expense figures change, so confirm the latest prospectus, factsheet, holdings date, bid/ask spread and listing availability before trading.

What an alternative to a video game ETF actually means
A video game ETF is a packaged portfolio, but “gaming exposure” can describe several different businesses:

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Developers and publishers: companies that create, license and sell games.
- Platforms and distribution: app stores, consoles, online marketplaces, streaming and digital-delivery networks.
- Esports: league operators, event businesses and specialist media.
- Hardware: graphics, consoles, peripherals, augmented-reality and virtual-reality equipment.
- Infrastructure: semiconductor, cloud, networking and data-center suppliers whose products support games but whose revenues come from many industries.
A direct gaming fund combines some of these categories according to an index methodology. An alternative can therefore be another fund with a different scope, a regional product, individual shares, an indirect technology fund, or a portfolio construction method that keeps gaming as a smaller position.

Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The distinction matters because a broad gaming ecosystem fund may rise when hardware or cloud demand is strong even if publishers struggle, while a publisher-focused basket is more dependent on release schedules, recurring in-game spending and intellectual-property success.
Direct ETF alternatives
These funds remain thematic ETFs, but they are alternatives when one product is unavailable, too concentrated, too narrow or listed in the wrong market for you.
| Fund | Stated exposure | Published cost figure | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| VanEck Video Gaming and eSports ETF (ESPO) | Tracks the MVIS Global Video Gaming and eSports Index, covering companies involved in game development, esports and related hardware and software. | VanEck says it will waive fees or pay expenses so operating expenses do not exceed 0.55% of average daily net assets through at least February 1, 2027. | Current prospectus, holdings, index methodology and whether the fee waiver is still in force. |
| Global X Video Games & Esports ETF (HERO) | Developers and publishers; gaming and esports streaming or distribution; competitive-esports operators; and hardware, including augmented and virtual reality. | 0.50% total expense ratio on the fund page. | Current holdings, country weights, top-position limits and trading spread. |
| Roundhill Video Games ETF (NERD) | Direct exposure to leading global video-game publishers and software developers. | 0.50% gross expense ratio on the fund page. | Whether the narrower software mandate matches your desired hardware and platform exposure, plus current concentration. |
| Betashares Video Games and Esports ETF (GAME) | A portfolio of leading global video-game and esports companies, listed for Australian-market investors. | 0.57% management cost figure in the 2026 factsheet. | ASX access, spread, currency treatment, distribution tax reporting and the latest factsheet. |
These cost labels are not interchangeable. A total expense ratio, a gross expense ratio and a management-cost figure can include different expenses and may be calculated under different local disclosure rules. Trading commissions, the bid/ask spread, fund-level transaction costs and taxes are additional.
ESPO: broad gaming and esports by index design
ESPO’s stated objective is to replicate, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MVIS Global Video Gaming and eSports Index. The index approach can provide one holding that spans publishers, esports and selected gaming technology or hardware companies.
The operating-expense cap is temporary rather than a permanent guarantee. Because holdings, index rules and waivers can change, read the current prospectus and holdings file on the date you invest. A fund that looks diversified by ticker can still have substantial economic exposure to a few large publishers, platform companies or countries.
HERO: the widest ecosystem description among the listed options
HERO’s stated universe explicitly includes firms that develop or publish games, distribute or stream gaming and esports content, operate competitive leagues, or manufacture gaming hardware such as augmented- and virtual-reality devices. That breadth may suit someone who wants exposure beyond software royalties, but it also means results can be affected by hardware cycles and media or platform businesses.

Check how the current portfolio implements that description. Two funds can use the same “gaming” label while assigning very different weights to publishers, hardware suppliers and esports operators.

NERD: a publisher and software-developer tilt
Roundhill describes NERD as direct exposure to the growth of the global video game industry through leading publishers and software developers. This narrower mandate can make the fund easier to understand if your thesis is about game economics rather than devices or infrastructure.
Narrower exposure is not automatically lower risk. A smaller set of publishers may create greater single-company and release-cycle sensitivity. Examine the latest holdings, country mix and maximum position sizes rather than relying on the fund name.
GAME: a regional access option
Betashares’ GAME factsheet is most relevant to investors who can trade ASX-listed products. Its management-cost figure and tax documents are reported under Australian conventions. An Australian listing does not remove exposure to overseas companies or currencies; it changes the trading venue and local reporting framework.
Confirm that your broker supports the listing, that the spread is acceptable for your order size and that you understand how foreign dividends, fund distributions and currency gains are reported in your jurisdiction.

Buying shares directly lets you choose the part of the value chain you understand and avoid paying a fund fee on companies you do not want. Advantages
- Control: you decide which businesses qualify as “gaming” and how much each receives.
- Transparency: you can read each company’s filings rather than infer exposure from an index label.
- Tax flexibility: you may be able to choose when to realise gains, subject to local rules.
- Ability to exclude: you can avoid a geography, business practice or non-gaming segment that does not fit your mandate.
Costs and risks
- Concentration: one delayed title, failed acquisition or regulatory decision can dominate returns.
- Research burden: you must follow release pipelines, live-service engagement, bookings, margins, balance sheets and management changes.
- Rebalancing: a winner can become an unintended oversized position unless you set rules.
- Foreign exchange: shares listed in Japan, China, South Korea, the United States or elsewhere add currency movements to company returns.
- Market access: overseas exchanges may involve different hours, settlement cycles, withholding taxes and disclosure standards.
A basket should be sized by risk, not by the number of tickers. Five highly correlated publishers are not equivalent to five independent exposures. Set a maximum position size, a maximum country weight and a review schedule before buying.
Use indirect “picks-and-shovels” exposure
Semiconductor, cloud-computing, networking and broad technology ETFs can benefit from the infrastructure behind graphics processing, online distribution and cloud gaming. They are not substitutes for publisher economics: gaming may be a small, changing or undisclosed share of each constituent’s revenue.
Semiconductor funds
Chip exposure can capture demand for graphics processors, memory, packaging and manufacturing equipment used in consoles and PCs. It also brings exposure to artificial-intelligence, automotive, industrial and smartphone cycles. A semiconductor fund may therefore outperform while game publishers lag, or fall because of a chip downturn even when game spending is healthy.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Cloud and data-center funds
Cloud infrastructure supports multiplayer services, downloads, analytics and game streaming. The same companies also serve enterprise software, advertising and other workloads. Treat gaming as one demand driver among several, not as a measured proxy unless the fund discloses a specific gaming allocation.
Broad technology funds
A diversified technology fund can reduce the risk of betting on one title or publisher, but its gaming sensitivity may be modest. Use the latest holdings and revenue disclosures to estimate how much gaming exposure you are actually obtaining; a technology label alone is not evidence of a meaningful gaming allocation.
Pair a diversified core with a small gaming tilt
Instead of replacing one gaming ETF with another, make gaming a satellite around a broad-market or diversified technology core. The core supplies exposure across sectors and companies; the satellite expresses a gaming view without making the theme the portfolio’s main risk.

This approach does not require a named product. Decide the target percentage, maximum loss you could tolerate, and rebalancing rule in advance. For example, you might direct new contributions to whichever sleeve is below target rather than selling every time prices move. The suitable allocation depends on your time horizon, emergency savings, debt, tax position and ability to withstand a prolonged drawdown.

| Question | Why it matters | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| What businesses generate the exposure? | Publisher profits behave differently from hardware, platforms, esports or infrastructure. | Index methodology, constituent classifications and company revenue descriptions. |
| How concentrated is it? | A few large positions can dominate returns and risk. | Number of holdings, top-10 weight, single-stock limits and overlap with other funds. |
| Where are the companies and listing? | Country regulation, market hours and currency affect returns and access. | Country weights, trading venue, currency-hedging policy and broker availability. |
| What is the full cost? | Published fund costs do not capture every trading expense. | Expense disclosure, spread at your order size, commissions, conversion charges and taxes. |
| How will distributions and gains be taxed? | Tax drag can differ by domicile and account type. | Fund domicile, withholding treatment, local forms and capital-gains rules. |
| What role does it play? | A direct thematic position should not be mistaken for a diversified core. | Target allocation, risk budget and rebalancing policy. |
How to choose and implement an alternative
- Define the exposure you want. Write down whether your thesis is about publishers, esports, platforms, hardware, infrastructure or the entire ecosystem. If you cannot state the revenue source, an indirect fund may be too vague.
- Set a portfolio role and limit. Decide whether the position is a core holding or a satellite. Establish a maximum weight and a maximum single-company exposure before reviewing products.
- Collect current documents. Download the latest prospectus, factsheet, holdings file, index methodology and fee schedule. Record the holdings date because a thematic portfolio can change materially between updates.
- Check concentration and overlap. Compare top positions across candidate funds and any shares you already own. Three products may look diversified but hold the same large companies.
- Calculate tradable cost. Add the published expense figure to the expected bid/ask spread, brokerage, foreign-exchange conversion, fund transaction costs and applicable taxes. Use a limit order when the market is thin and understand that a limit order may not fill.
- Confirm access and tax documentation. Verify the exchange, account eligibility, settlement process, dividend withholding and forms required in your country. Do not assume that an overseas listing receives the same tax treatment as a domestic fund.
- Buy in a way that matches your risk plan. A staged purchase can reduce timing risk, while a single trade may be simpler and cheaper. Neither method removes the possibility of a loss.
- Document the reason for ownership. Note the expected exposure, target weight and conditions that would invalidate the thesis. This prevents a temporary price move from becoming an unplanned strategy change.
Common failure modes and how to correct them
Choosing by the word “gaming” alone
A label can hide major differences in hardware, software, platform and geographic exposure. Correct this by reading the methodology and mapping each top holding to its gaming-related revenue source.
Comparing unlike fee figures
A gross expense ratio, total expense ratio and management-cost figure may not cover the same items. Put the definition and measurement date next to every number, then include spread and trading costs in your own estimate.
Assuming more holdings means more diversification
Companies can share the same publisher, platform, chip or advertising cycle. Measure economic overlap and top-weight concentration, not just the count of securities.
Ignoring currency and regulation
International gaming exposure can be affected by exchange rates, content approvals, data rules, online-service restrictions and local tax changes. Decide whether you want currency hedging and review the jurisdictions represented.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Treating infrastructure as a publisher substitute
Cloud and semiconductor funds may profit from gaming growth while receiving most revenue from unrelated sectors. Use them for infrastructure exposure and keep expectations about direct game-company sensitivity realistic.
Best Value
Failing to rebalance
A successful title or hardware cycle can push one holding far above its intended risk. Rebalance on a calendar or tolerance-band basis, and account for taxes and transaction costs before selling.
Costs, liquidity and tax questions to settle first
The published figures above are snapshots, not guarantees. Expense ratios can change; fee waivers can expire; assets and spreads can move; and index methodologies can be revised. Check the current documents immediately before an order.
Liquidity is a trading characteristic, not a fund-quality score. A fund with a low annual fee can still be expensive to trade if its spread is wide or the market is closed when you place the order. Compare normal bid/ask conditions, average daily volume and the size of your intended trade. Avoid assuming that a foreign listing will trade as tightly as a domestic one.
Tax treatment depends on your country, account type, fund domicile and whether distributions contain foreign income or capital gains. Individual shares can give you control over when gains are realised, while funds may distribute income or gains according to their governing rules. Obtain current local tax guidance for a material investment; the product’s factsheet is not a substitute for personalised advice.
Which route fits which investor?
| Investor objective | Usually the closest fit | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| One trade covering publishers, esports and selected hardware | A broad direct gaming ETF such as ESPO or HERO, after checking current scope. | The index may include businesses and countries you would not select yourself. |
| Primarily game publishers and software developers | A narrower fund such as NERD or a curated publisher basket. | Greater sensitivity to release schedules and company-specific results. |
| Australian exchange access | An ASX-listed regional option such as GAME, subject to broker and tax checks. | Local listing does not eliminate overseas currency and company risk. |
| Maximum control over names and weights | Individual shares across publishers, platforms and distributors. | Research, rebalancing and concentration risk are your responsibility. |
| Exposure to the infrastructure behind gaming | Semiconductor, cloud or broad technology funds. | Gaming can be a small part of revenue and returns may follow other technology cycles. |
| Gaming conviction without a dominant thematic position | Diversified core plus a defined gaming satellite. | The portfolio may lag a concentrated gaming rally. |
A practical review checklist
- Has the fund’s objective or index changed since you last checked?
- Are the holdings and weights dated recently enough for your decision?
- What percentage is actually in publishers, platforms, esports, hardware and infrastructure?
- How much overlap exists with your other ETFs and individual shares?
- Are the fee figure and any waiver clearly defined and still effective?
- Can you trade the listing at a reasonable spread in your account?
- What currency, withholding-tax and reporting obligations apply?
- What event would make you reduce or close the position?
No single alternative is “best” for every investor. Choose the vehicle whose economic exposure, concentration, access, cost and tax treatment match the role you have assigned it, then re-check those attributes when the fund publishes new documents or your circumstances change.
