If you want warm water and island scenery, look first at Okinawa, Hawaiʻi or Grand Cayman; if what you really want is a memorable break outdoors, consider fall foliage, caves or high-country scenery instead. The key is your month: September, October and November bring different weather, beach access and operating conditions, and none of the seasonal averages guarantees the weather on your dates.
Choose what you want to keep from a tropical-island trip
A tropical holiday can mean different things: warm temperatures, beaches, unhurried time outside or the feeling of being surrounded by water. The closest substitute depends on which matters most. Okinawa, Hawaiʻi and Grand Cayman retain an island or beach focus, with different fall weather trade-offs. The U.S. national parks below exchange dependable beach time for foliage, caves, hiking or wilderness. Australia offers spring during Northern Hemisphere fall, but its climate varies widely by region.

For warm island weather and beach time
Okinawa: subtropical beaches, especially through October
Okinawa and the Kerama Islands are a strong choice if you want coastlines, beaches, scenic drives, hikes and island-hopping, and are willing to trade tropical heat for a milder subtropical climate. Japan’s national tourism and environment guidance describes temperatures of about 20–25°C toward late October and in November. It says the official beach season runs through October, September is peak typhoon season, typhoons generally taper in October, and November is typically described as stable.

#1 Best Overall
Hawaiʻi: tropical scenery, events and surf season
Hawaiʻi preserves the tropical-island feel while adding parks, fall events and outdoor activities. The state tourism guide characterizes fall as warm and mild and notes that north-shore surf season begins, with larger waves through November. Those swells are a draw for experienced surfers, not a general signal that a beach is safe for swimming. Choose beaches and activities for your ability, then check current surf and ocean conditions.
Hawaiʻi works best if you want beach access to remain part of a broader trip rather than the only activity. A tourism authority’s claims about fall crowds or costs are not an independent, quantified comparison, so do not assume a particular saving or crowd level when choosing dates.
Grand Cayman: warm, with a meaningful rain trade-off
Grand Cayman fits travelers who put warm temperatures and an island setting ahead of reliably dry weather. The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism gives an October average temperature of about 28°C (83°F) and says the Caribbean receives above-average rainfall from October through November. Those figures describe seasonal climate, not conditions on a specific travel day.
Rank #2
The destination tourism authority also says airfare and hotel prices are at their lowest during this period. Treat that as the authority’s own pricing claim, not a market-wide independent comparison or a guarantee that your itinerary will be cheaper. Compare actual dates and total trip costs before booking.
For foliage, caves and cooler outdoor days
Great Smoky Mountains: follow the color downhill
The Smokies suit travelers who would rather hike through changing forest than spend the day at the beach. Color typically begins at higher elevations and descends over several weeks. The National Park Service says lower- and mid-elevation peak color commonly falls between mid-October and early November, but exact timing is difficult to predict and shifts from year to year.
October is the park’s busiest month. Expect parking areas to fill and drives to take longer than planned. Allow extra time, consider less-visited areas and keep a backup stop in mind if your preferred trailhead or overlook is full.
Rank #3
Shenandoah: a cool fall-season park visit
Shenandoah’s typical fall season spans late September through November, with National Park Service guidance giving usual daytime temperatures of 49–60°F. It is a better fit for foliage and cool-weather time outdoors than for anyone seeking a warm beach substitute. Fall weekends bring substantial crowds along with the foliage, so build flexibility into weekend plans.
Mammoth Cave: combine an underground tour with time outside
Mammoth Cave offers a mixed itinerary: cave tours, forest walks, backcountry outings and, in early fall, paddling. The National Park Service describes early-fall daytime highs as averaging in the 70s°F, while later-fall lows can approach freezing. Pack for a wider range of conditions if visiting later in the season.
Tour schedules vary seasonally, and tours may sell out on holidays and school breaks. The park recommends reserving in advance because an advance ticket is the way to ensure a spot is available for your party. Check the current tour schedule before you set travel dates.
Rank #4
Crater Lake: striking scenery with winter-like October risks
Crater Lake is an option for travelers who value high-elevation scenery and can adjust plans around weather. The National Park Service reports an October average high of 52°F (11°C), an average low of 31°F (-1°C), and average October snowfall of 21 inches (53 cm). These are climate averages, not a prediction for your visit; conditions can change quickly, and smoke can also affect plans.
Before setting out, check park alerts, weather, regional road conditions and air quality. Facilities may reduce hours or close, so avoid relying on a particular service or route without confirming it is operating.

Isle Royale: remote wilderness, not a casual beach replacement
Choose Isle Royale only if you want a demanding, self-sufficient wilderness trip. The National Park Service lists the visitor season as April 16 through October 31. Fall services are limited or absent, and potable water is unavailable. Visitors need to bring food, warm layers and waterproof gear, and be prepared to purify water. Cold, rain, wind, waves, ice or snow can be part of the conditions; check current transportation and service schedules before committing.
Best Value
This option has a much higher preparation burden than a conventional island holiday. A water purifier or filter is a practical necessity for the stated water conditions, not an optional beach-trip extra.

Australia: spring, with different conditions by region
Australia’s September–November season is spring, not autumn. Tourism Australia emphasizes that conditions vary substantially across the country. Tropical northern destinations such as Darwin, Broome and Cairns have a wet season from November through April, so a November trip there has a different weather profile from September or October.
For a coastal feel, the tourism guide points to the Gold Coast, Byron Bay and Sunshine Coast. For a spring trip less focused on beaches, it also highlights wildflowers and springtime city and nature experiences. Choose a region and month first rather than treating Australia as one uniform climate.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMatch the destination to your month and tolerance for uncertainty
- September: Consider Hawaiʻi for tropical scenery and activities, or start a foliage-focused park trip where fall color is beginning at higher elevations. In Okinawa, account for peak typhoon season. Australia is in spring.
- October: Okinawa’s official beach season continues through the month, while the Smokies enter their busiest period and lower- and mid-elevation foliage often approaches peak. Grand Cayman remains warm on average but is within the Caribbean’s above-average-rainfall period. Crater Lake requires cold- and snow-aware planning.
- November: Okinawa is described as generally stable and comfortable for outdoor exploration, though its official beach season has ended. Hawaiʻi’s north-shore waves continue to build through November. In tropical northern Australia, the wet season begins.
- Any fall date at Isle Royale: Confirm access and services against the October 31 end of the visitor season, and plan to arrive self-sufficient.
Across all these choices, seasonal averages and tourism guidance are not date-specific forecasts. Check operating schedules and local conditions close to departure, especially when beach access, park roads, tours or transportation are central to your plans.
