If you want a small device for internet radio, a compact Wi-Fi radio is the closest replacement: it keeps radio controls and may add FM or DAB/DAB+ reception. A smart speaker can also play stations, but access is usually app- or voice-led, and it is not necessarily a radio tuner. The right choice depends on local station coverage, power, controls and the space you have—not just the station count on a product page.
Choose a radio-first device or a smart speaker?
A dedicated compact Wi-Fi radio is the more direct fit if you want to select stations on the device, use presets, or combine internet streams with terrestrial radio. Models differ: some include FM and DAB+, while others may have different tuner standards depending on region.

A smart speaker is a broader connected speaker. It may play radio through its manufacturer’s app, a station’s app, a radio aggregator such as TuneIn or Radioplayer, a music service, or voice commands. Which routes work depends on the device, services and country; do not assume every speaker supports the same stations or method.

When a compact smart speaker makes more sense
Bluesound PULSE MINI 2i
The PULSE MINI 2i is a compact multi-room Wi-Fi speaker rather than a terrestrial radio receiver. Its BluOS app can tune internet radio and podcasts, save station presets and set alarms. Published specifications include dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet, two-way Bluetooth and a combined Toslink/3.5 mm input. The cited specifications do not establish FM or DAB reception, so it is not a like-for-like option if over-the-air radio matters.

For smart speakers generally, verify how you will reach your stations before choosing: the manufacturer’s app, a station app, an aggregator, a music service or voice control may each have different availability. What to check for your room and routine
- Radio coverage: Check whether you need internet stations only or also FM, DAB or DAB+. Tuner standards and broadcasts vary by region.
- Controls: For bedside or desk listening, consider direct station controls, preset buttons, screen readability, alarms and a sleep timer. The CR-ST100S lists a TFT display, dual alarm and sleep timer; the CR-ST90S lists physical controls.
- Power: If you will move the radio between rooms or use it away from an outlet, look for a battery-powered model and treat manufacturer runtime as a rated maximum. The CR-ST90S is the only option in this comparison with a stated battery rating.
- Footprint: Compare published dimensions with the space available. The Sencor’s listed width is 310 mm; dimensions for the other models are not stated in the cited material.
- Other audio sources: Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary input, Ethernet and headphone output are not universal. Check the exact inputs you intend to use.
- Services and updates: Streaming-service support, station access, availability and software support can change. Check the current local product and support pages rather than relying on a general station-count claim.
How smart and hybrid radios fit the category
A hybrid radio combines broadcast reception with internet-delivered services. The UK government review defines a smart or hybrid radio receiver as combining FM, DAB and IP, and notes that streaming services such as Spotify may also be embedded. It observes that such a device may suit people who prefer not to use voice activation.
