Best Alternatives to a Smartphone for Keeping in Touch With Your Child

A child who needs to reach family may not need an unrestricted smartphone. A child-focused cellular watch can offer calls and messages through parent-approved contacts, while Apple Watch For Your Kids lets a family configure a cellular Apple Watch without giving the child their own iPhone. The best fit depends on contact controls, carrier support, recurring service, school rules and what the location and SOS features actually do.

At a glance: which option fits your family?

Option Communication and controls Check before choosing
Gabb Watch 3e Calls, texts, voice messages, preset messages, GPS and Safe Zones; contacts are parent-approved. Requires a phone plan. Gabb says location updates are approximately every 15 minutes, and its SOS button calls a chosen contact rather than 911. Battery life is a manufacturer estimate.
Xplora XGO3 or X6Play Calls and texts to contacts approved in the Guardian app, plus GPS and SOS. Xplora says these models do not have an open internet browser or social media. Requires Xplora Connect. The US support page names AT&T and T-Mobile; verify current model, coverage, subscription terms and SOS behavior.
Apple Watch For Your Kids An adult can set up a cellular Apple Watch for a child, manage approved contacts and settings, and view location. Schooltime and Emergency SOS features are available. Requires an adult iPhone, a child account in Family Sharing, an eligible cellular watch, supported carrier and region, and a cellular plan for connection away from the parent’s iPhone.
Feature-limited phone or hand-me-down May be a family option when a watch is not a good fit. Controls vary by device and operating system. Check the exact handset’s contact, app, web and account settings; equivalent restrictions are not established here.

These capabilities are described by the manufacturers, not established by an independent head-to-head test. For current specifications and terms, consult the Gabb Watch 3e product page, Xplora’s XGO3 and X6Play information, and Apple’s setup and eligibility guidance.

What to compare before buying

Start with how your child needs to communicate, then check the service and limitations that come with the device. A watch can narrow access to apps and the web, but that does not make its location or emergency functions equivalent to continuous monitoring or a direct emergency-services call.

  • Who can contact the child? Check whether contacts are parent-approved and how that list is managed.
  • What communication is supported? Confirm whether the watch supports calls, text messages, preset messages or voice messages, and which contacts can use each.
  • What access does it allow? Verify internet, social media and app-installation access for the specific model, rather than assuming all kids’ watches work alike.
  • How does location work? Look for stated update intervals, Safe Zone or geofence behavior, and factors that can affect location.
  • What does SOS do? Check exactly who is contacted, and whether the function calls a caregiver or emergency services.
  • What does ownership require? Check compatible carriers, coverage where the child will use it, plan or subscription requirements, and recurring fees.
  • Will it work in the child’s routine? Consider school settings, battery and charging, fit, durability, water limits, and the parent’s setup and management workload.

Gabb Watch 3e

Gabb describes the Watch 3e as a standalone communication device with calls, texts, voice messages, preset messages, GPS, Safe Zones and parent-approved contacts. It works independently of a phone but requires a selected phone plan, so confirm the plan’s current terms and local network support before buying.

#1 Best Overall
Fitbit Google Ace LTE - Kids Smartwatch with Call, Message, GPS, and Activity-Based Games, Ace Pass Data Plan Required - Mild - Strange Arcade
  • KNOW WHERE YOUR WILD THINGS ARE - The Fitbit Ace LTE is the first-of-its-kind kids smartwatch and fitness tracker designed to move the next generation of gamers; with built-in cellular 4G LTE and GPS location, they’re never out of reach[1,4]
  • IN-APP CALLS & MESSAGES WITHOUT A PHONE NUMBER - Stay connected and add up to 20 contacts (ages 13 and up) for them to call and message with; Works with most Android 11.0 or newer or iOS 16 or newer[20,21,22]; Google account and Fitbit Ace app required.
  • A BATTERY THAT KEEPS ON GOING - With 16+ hours of battery life, Fitbit Ace LTE can keep up with kids all day long[15]; and fast charging provides 11 hours of battery life in just 30 minutes[16]
  • LTE DATA FOR UNLIMITED FUN - The Fitbit Ace Pass data plan gives you access to calling, messaging, and location sharing; plus, kids get every game title in the Fitbit Arcade[4,7]
  • HELP YOUR KIDS FOCUS AT SCHOOL - School Time lets you limit gameplay on your kid’s watch during the day to help them focus, while still letting them getting in touch if they need to; kids cannot message each other using Fitbit Ace LTE[8]

Two limitations deserve particular attention. Gabb says location updates arrive approximately every 15 minutes, rather than providing continuous monitoring; it also says accuracy depends on signal, connectivity, battery and device conditions. Its SOS button calls the child’s selected contact and cannot call 911. Do not treat that button as a connection to emergency services.

Gabb states expected battery life of 14–18 hours under normal usage; heavier GPS or activity use can reduce it. The company describes the watch as water resistant and advises against submerging it. These are manufacturer claims, not independently measured results. See the Gabb Watch 3e product page for current device and plan details.

Xplora XGO3 and X6Play

Xplora says both models can call and text contacts approved in the Guardian app, use GPS and SOS, and do not provide an open internet browser or social media. Its US help page says service requires Xplora Connect and names AT&T and T-Mobile as supported networks. Network support and coverage can vary, so confirm compatibility for the exact model and the places your child will use it.

The vendor page version reviewed listed XGO3 at $129.99 and X6Play at $169.99; those prices and availability can change, so verify them on the current listing. Check the current subscription terms and what the SOS function does before choosing either model. Xplora also identifies model-specific bands, chargers, screen protectors and SIM cards, so accessories need to match the watch. See Xplora’s model information and its US network guidance.

Apple Watch set up for a child

Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup) allows an adult to use an iPhone to configure a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch for a child who does not have their own iPhone. The adult can choose approved contacts, manage settings and view location. Apple also lists Schooltime and Emergency SOS features.

Setup has prerequisites: an adult iPhone, a child account in Family Sharing, an eligible cellular-capable watch, carrier support and availability in the family’s region. A cellular plan is needed for the child’s watch to stay connected when the parent’s iPhone is not nearby. Apple says some interactions between a family-configured watch and the setup iPhone are limited. Its support guidance names Apple Watch SE and Series 6 or later as eligible categories, while current product information recommends SE 3 and describes other Series 4 and later cellular models as working. Because model eligibility and regional support can change, check Apple’s current setup and eligibility page and watchOS product information before purchase.

When a feature-limited phone may make more sense

A basic or hand-me-down phone is another possibility if your child is unlikely to wear a watch or needs communication features a watch does not provide. Its restrictions depend on the specific handset, operating system, account setup and parental controls. Compare the exact device’s options for contacts, calls and messages, web access, apps and account permissions; the devices are not interchangeable by default.

Make the choice around the real need

If the priority is contacting family while limiting open-ended phone access, compare the child-focused watches first. Match the choice to the coverage and service available where you live, the contact controls you want, the child’s school and daily routine, and the limits of its location and SOS features. Choose a feature-limited phone only after checking the controls on that particular device.
