Xbox describes it as its lowest-cost console option, although the cited announcement does not state a current price. If you already own a compatible phone, tablet, PC, TV or browser device, cloud gaming may avoid a console purchase altogether. Handheld PCs provide a portable Windows game library, while Nintendo Switch 2 combines handheld and television play. These options are not interchangeable: the right value depends on whether you need local hardware, ownership of games, portability, a large existing library or the lowest possible upfront spend.

Why Xbox Series S is the clearest low-cost console answer
Xbox’s June 25, 2026 console-price update, with changes effective August 1, 2026, calls Xbox Series S the lowest-cost way for console players to access the games listed in that announcement. That makes it the best-supported lower-cost dedicated-console recommendation in this comparison. It is a conventional living-room machine: connect it to a television, install games locally or through Xbox services, pair a controller and play without relying on a streamed video feed for every session.

The same Xbox announcement says certified refurbished consoles are available through Microsoft Stores for up to US$100 off the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. “Up to” is a maximum reduction, not a guaranteed price for every model or country. Refurbished inventory, warranty terms, storage configuration and eligibility vary, so inspect the exact listing before treating the discount as part of your budget.

Do not treat Series S as universally cheapest. The announcement supplies no current Series S price, and hardware prices differ by market. Compare a live local listing with the cost of any controller, storage expansion, games and recurring services you actually need. A discounted console can still cost more than cloud gaming if you already have a suitable device and an eligible subscription.
What to check before buying
- Confirm the exact Series S model, storage capacity, included accessories and warranty.
- Check local stock and the final price after tax, delivery and any required accessories.
- List the games you intend to play and verify platform support, because a console’s catalog is not identical to a PC or Nintendo system.
- Budget for storage if your installed library will exceed the internal drive; the cited material does not establish expansion pricing.
- Compare a new unit with certified refurbished stock, remembering that the stated US$100 saving is a maximum and may not apply in your region.
Cloud gaming: the lowest upfront commitment when your devices qualify
Cloud gaming renders a game on a remote server and sends the video to your screen while your controller or keyboard input travels back. You can therefore use hardware you already own instead of buying a new console. Xbox says its cloud service works on supported consoles, Windows PCs, televisions, phones, tablets, virtual-reality headsets and web browsers.
Most Xbox cloud games require an eligible Game Pass plan and a supported region. Select free-to-play games require only a free Microsoft account. Availability is not universal: titles and features vary by region, plan and platform. Check the service’s current game and device eligibility for your location rather than assuming that a game available on Xbox hardware can also be streamed to your phone.
Connection requirements and practical limits
Xbox recommends at least 10 Mbps for mobile play and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs and tablets. Those figures are recommendations, not a guarantee of perfect play. Performance also varies with connection quality, your location, the device and other factors. Wi-Fi congestion, a distant server, packet loss and household traffic can produce blurry video, input delay or disconnections even when a speed test exceeds the recommendation.
Cloud gaming is most comfortable for turn-based games, strategy, role-playing and many single-player experiences when latency is moderate. Fast competitive shooters, rhythm games and fighting games expose delay more readily. A wired Ethernet connection or a strong, nearby 5 GHz Wi-Fi access point generally gives a more consistent path than a congested wireless network, but no connection method removes server or regional limitations.
How to test Xbox Cloud Gaming before spending on hardware
- Open Xbox’s cloud-gaming service on a supported browser or install the supported app on your device.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account and confirm that cloud gaming is available in your country.
- Check whether the game you want is included in your eligible Game Pass plan. For a supported free-to-play title, test with the free account requirement instead.
- Use the recommended connection target for your device: 10 Mbps on mobile or 20 Mbps on a console, PC or tablet.
- Play at the time and location you normally use. Test movement, menus and multiplayer rather than judging only the loading screen.
- If the stream stutters, stop other high-bandwidth activity, move closer to the router or use Ethernet, then retest before buying equipment.
Microsoft reported that 140 million hours were streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming between October and December 2024. This is a Microsoft-reported usage figure from its 2025 Game Developers Conference article, not an independent estimate of the overall cloud-gaming market or a promise of service capacity in every region.

Watch recurring billing
Xbox’s service page warns that recurring billing is enabled by default. If you start a trial or promotional offer, open your Microsoft account’s subscription settings and turn off recurring billing before the renewal date if you do not intend to continue. Record the renewal date and the plan tier; a low introductory offer does not establish the ongoing local price.

GeForce NOW uses a different access model from a console catalog. NVIDIA says the service generally streams games you own through supported storefronts, including Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app and Xbox. It also supports many free-to-play games. You normally authenticate the relevant store account, select a supported title and let NVIDIA’s remote computer run it.
This can be economical when your existing library is the main reason you are considering a new machine. You are not buying a second copy merely to stream, but you still need the game in a supported store, a compatible account and a service region where the feature is offered. Ownership in one storefront does not automatically mean support in every storefront or every country.
GeForce NOW time allowances
NVIDIA’s paid Performance and Ultimate memberships include 100 hours of monthly playtime. Up to 15 unused hours can roll over. The allowance is a service limit, not a measure of how many hours your purchased games are legally yours to play, and membership features and prices vary by region. Check the current terms for your country before comparing a membership with a console purchase.
When this option is a poor substitute
- You need guaranteed offline play: streaming requires an active connection.
- Your favourite games or storefront accounts are unsupported.
- You are sensitive to latency and cannot provide a stable low-jitter connection.
- You want a simple television appliance rather than account linking, launchers and per-game compatibility checks.
Handheld gaming PCs: portability and a broad PC library
ROG Xbox Ally handhelds are Windows devices designed to combine portable PC gaming with Xbox features. Xbox’s announcement describes access to Xbox, Game Pass and other PC storefronts, plus Xbox cloud gaming and Remote Play options. That combination is materially different from a low-cost living-room console: you get a built-in screen and controls, but also the setup, updates, launchers and compatibility decisions associated with Windows.
The cited announcement does not establish that an ROG Xbox Ally is cheaper than a Series S or any other console. Do not infer affordability from its feature list. Compare the current local hardware price, included charger, storage, warranty and any subscription you plan to use. A handheld can replace both a console and a portable device for some people, but its value depends on how much you use portability and PC storefront choice.

Handheld PC trade-offs
| Advantage | Cost or complexity to account for |
|---|---|
| Play on a sofa, in bed or while travelling | Battery life, charging and screen size affect how long and comfortably you can play |
| Access to multiple PC storefronts | Different launchers, sign-ins, updates and controller support can require troubleshooting |
| Installed games can work without continuous broadband | Large downloads, patches and storage upgrades still require time, space and usually an internet connection |
| Xbox cloud and Remote Play options | Those modes inherit streaming latency, regional availability and service requirements |
Valve’s Steam Deck OLED product page is another relevant handheld-PC reference, but the cited material does not expose enough price information to support an affordability claim. Treat it as a form factor and library alternative, not as proof that a particular model undercuts a console.
Nintendo Switch 2 for one system that travels and docks
Nintendo describes Switch 2 as playable in handheld or docked mode. Nintendo of Canada’s announcement gives a launch MSRP of C$629.99 for June 5, but that is Canadian launch pricing, not a current worldwide price or a direct total-cost comparison. Taxes, bundles, retailer discounts and later price changes can alter what a buyer pays.
The platform solves a different problem from Xbox Cloud Gaming or a Windows handheld. Its appeal is a single device that moves from a built-in screen to television play, with Nintendo’s software ecosystem and local play possible without continuous broadband. Online features, digital downloads and updates still require internet access, and you should verify compatibility for each title.

Choose it when Nintendo’s library and the handheld-docked format matter more than matching another platform’s game catalog.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare total cost, not just the box
A fair comparison includes the first payment and the costs needed to play the games you care about. Build a simple local worksheet with these rows:
- Hardware price after tax and delivery.
- Controller, dock, headset or charger that is not included.
- Storage expansion and the likely size of your installed library.
- Games you will buy outright versus games supplied through a subscription catalog.
- Recurring subscription price, renewal date and whether the plan is required for the features you use.
- Internet service or home-network upgrades if cloud play is central to your plan.
- Travel accessories and replacement costs for a handheld.
Do not assign a single global total to these options. The available evidence does not publish a complete ownership-cost comparison, and the title does not specify a country or a particular expensive console. Use current local listings and the games you actually play.

Choose by the problem you are trying to solve
You want the simplest television setup
Start with Xbox Series S. It is the only option here explicitly identified by its manufacturer as the lowest-cost console option, and it avoids the latency and device-compatibility variables of streaming. Verify the current local price because the cited announcement does not provide one.
You already own a good phone, tablet, PC or smart TV
Test Xbox Cloud Gaming first. It can eliminate the hardware purchase, but only if your region, device, plan and connection qualify. A short real-world test is more informative than a headline bandwidth number.
Your games are already on PC storefronts
Evaluate GeForce NOW before buying a new PC or console. Confirm storefront support, game support and the 100-hour monthly allowance on the Performance or Ultimate tier if you need one of those plans. If you need offline play or guaranteed low latency, a local machine is safer.
You want to play away from a television
Choose between a Windows handheld and Switch 2 based on library rather than appearance. The ROG Xbox Ally announcement supports Xbox, Game Pass, other PC storefronts, cloud and Remote Play; Switch 2 supports handheld and docked play in Nintendo’s ecosystem. Neither cited source proves that its hardware is cheaper than a console.
You are trying to minimise recurring bills
Prefer hardware and games you can use without a mandatory catalog subscription, then treat optional services as variable costs. For Xbox subscriptions, check recurring-billing settings before a trial or promotion renews. For cloud services, remember that the service itself remains part of your access model even when you own a game.
Buying checklist
- Write down the five games you most want and mark each as local, downloadable, cloud-supported or unavailable on every candidate.
- Set your country and currency before recording any price; do not use the Canadian Switch 2 launch MSRP as a worldwide figure.
- Decide whether you need television play, handheld play, offline access or all three.
- Measure your normal connection and test at peak household-use times if cloud gaming is under consideration.
- Add subscription renewals, storage and accessories to the hardware figure.
- Check warranty, refurbished eligibility, return terms and retailer stock for the exact model.
- Turn off unwanted recurring billing immediately after activating a trial or promotional subscription.
Bottom line
Xbox Series S is the safest recommendation when you want a lower-cost, dedicated home console and can find a suitable local listing. Cloud gaming is potentially the cheapest path when you already own compatible hardware and have the required plan, region and connection. GeForce NOW is especially rational for an existing supported PC library. A Windows handheld is for portability and storefront flexibility, not a proven bargain, while Switch 2 is for Nintendo’s software and a handheld-docked design; its cited C$629.99 figure is Canadian launch MSRP only.
