Best alternatives to a Chromebook if you need reliable Android apps

Choose an Android tablet first when your Android apps must run locally and reliably on the replacement device. Confirm every essential app on the exact tablet model in Google Play before buying. A Windows laptop with Phone Link is a conditional choice when you already own a supported Android phone or tablet and can accept mirrored apps. ChromeOS Flex is not a solution for this requirement: Google states that Flex devices do not support Google Play or Android apps.

Which Chromebook alternative fits your Android-app requirement?

The important distinction is where the app actually runs. An Android tablet installs and runs the app on the tablet. Windows Phone Link displays an app that is still running on a connected Android device. ChromeOS Flex does not provide Android-app support at all. A regular Chromebook can run Android apps on supported models, but support and performance vary by device.

Option Where Android apps run Best fit Critical limitations
Android tablet Directly on the tablet You want local Android apps and can work in a tablet form factor Check each must-have app on the exact model; phone-oriented apps may not offer a good tablet layout
Windows laptop with Phone Link On a connected, supported Android phone or tablet, mirrored to Windows You need Windows desktop software and occasional access to selected Android apps Supported devices and markets are limited; apps are not installed on the PC and some do not handle mouse or keyboard input well
ChromeOS Flex Nowhere on the Flex device You want a ChromeOS-like system for non-Android tasks Google Play and Android apps are unsupported
Chromebook with ChromeOS On supported devices through Google Play You are willing to remain in the Chromebook category Support depends on the model, processor architecture and the app’s build

For a simple decision: select an Android tablet if local Android compatibility is non-negotiable; select Windows plus Phone Link only if mirroring is acceptable; eliminate ChromeOS Flex when Android apps are a requirement.

1. Android tablet: the most direct replacement

Why it is the safest category choice

An Android tablet uses the platform for which the apps were built, so there is no desktop bridge or remote display involved. You install the app from Google Play, sign in on the tablet and use its touch interface. That makes it the clearest alternative when your Chromebook was primarily an Android-app device rather than a web-app computer.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

“Android tablet” is a category, not a guarantee that every app works. Developers can restrict an app to particular screen sizes, Android versions, input methods or hardware capabilities. Treat compatibility as a property of the combination of app and tablet model, not as a promise made by the Android label.

Check each essential app before purchase

Use Google Play’s device-specific filtering rather than searching for the app on a generic web page. Google’s instructions for finding apps for tablets and other devices are at Google Play Help.

  1. Write down the apps you cannot replace, including work, school, banking, authentication and specialist tools.
  2. Open Google Play on the tablet, or select the exact tablet from the device selector when checking the listing from another device.
  3. Confirm that each app is offered for that model. If the listing says it is unavailable, do not assume sideloading will provide a supported experience.
  4. Read the current developer details for required Android version, permissions, sign-in method, camera, GPS, Bluetooth, stylus or other capabilities.
  5. Check screenshots and reviews for tablet-specific behavior. An app can install successfully and still present a stretched phone layout, a missing panel or controls that are awkward with a keyboard.
  6. For the two or three apps that matter most, test the complete workflow on the actual tablet during the return period: sign-in, file import, notifications, printing, accessories and any offline or account-recovery steps you depend on.

The exact-device check matters more than the tablet manufacturer. Google’s platform guidance explains how apps can adapt to large screens and external input, but that guidance does not require every app to implement an excellent tablet interface. The developer’s listing and a hands-on check remain the final authority for your app list.

Make tablet input practical

Android supports external keyboards, trackpads, mice and styluses on compatible hardware. Google describes adaptive app behavior and external-input support in its Adaptive apps guidance. A keyboard case can make long emails, documents and spreadsheets more comfortable, but it does not turn the tablet into a desktop operating system. Menus, window management, keyboard shortcuts and file workflows may still behave like Android.

Before choosing a keyboard case, verify its layout, connection method, charging arrangement and compatibility with the exact tablet model. Check whether the apps you use expose keyboard shortcuts or rely on touch gestures. A trackpad can improve pointer work, while a stylus is useful only when the app supports pen input; neither accessory fixes an app that was designed solely for a phone screen.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Tablet checks that prevent unpleasant surprises

  • Display and orientation: confirm the app behaves correctly in the orientation and screen size you plan to use.
  • Input: test typing, pointer selection, drag-and-drop and stylus actions in the specific apps, not just in the home screen.
  • Hardware features: match the app’s requirements for camera, microphone, location, biometric authentication, NFC or Bluetooth accessories.
  • Accounts: verify that work or school single-sign-on and two-factor authentication are supported on a tablet.
  • File handling: check how the app opens, saves and shares files with the tablet’s storage and cloud services.
  • Updates: review the developer’s current Android-version requirements and update policy before committing to a model.

2. Windows laptop with Phone Link: useful only when mirroring is enough

What Phone Link actually does

Phone Link can expose selected apps from a connected, supported Android phone or tablet in a Windows window. Microsoft’s support explanation is explicit: No, apps you open will be running from your Android device. The PC is mirroring the Android app; it is not installing an Android package on Windows. See Microsoft’s Phone Link app-support article.

This arrangement is attractive when you need Windows software such as a full desktop editor, accounting package or engineering tool and only a few Android apps. It is not a replacement for local Android execution. The phone or tablet must remain connected, powered and within the conditions required by Phone Link, and the experience depends on the Android device’s app and hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requirements to verify first

Phone Link’s Apps experience is limited to supported Android devices and markets. Microsoft maintains a changing compatibility list at Supported devices for Phone Link experiences. Check that list for your exact phone or tablet, Windows edition and region before buying a laptop for this purpose.

  • A compatible Windows PC with the current Phone Link application.
  • A supported Android phone or tablet with the companion linking feature enabled.
  • The same Microsoft account and the permissions requested during pairing.
  • A connection that is stable enough for interactive mirroring.
  • Apps that Phone Link can expose and that remain usable with a Windows pointer and keyboard.

Support can change as Microsoft adds or removes device models and features. A phone that can mirror notifications may not support the Apps experience, so verify the specific feature rather than relying on the Phone Link name alone.

Set up and use mirrored apps

  1. On the Windows laptop, open Phone Link and start the Android-device pairing flow.
  2. On the Android device, install or open the companion linking feature requested by Phone Link, sign in with the same account and approve the permissions shown on both screens.
  3. Complete the pairing code or QR-code confirmation and allow the connection features required for app streaming.
  4. In Phone Link, open the Apps section. The available app list is generated from the connected Android device and its support level.
  5. Select an app to open its mirrored view on Windows. Keep the Android device connected and available while you use it.
  6. Try the actions you actually need: typing, scrolling, file attachment, camera access, copy and paste, notifications and sign-out. If one fails, treat that app as unsuitable for this workflow rather than assuming every Android app will behave the same way.

Where the Windows approach breaks down

Mirroring adds another dependency to every session. A disconnected phone, a blocked permission or an unsupported market can remove the app from the Windows interface. Microsoft also warns that some apps may not work well with a mouse or keyboard. Touch-first controls, protected video, camera hand-off, Bluetooth peripherals and apps that expect the Android device’s sensors can be especially awkward.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

Do not buy a Windows laptop expecting to install Android apps locally through Phone Link. The Android device remains the host, and the Windows computer is the display and input endpoint. If you need the app when the phone is unavailable, or if you need predictable desktop integration, choose a native Windows version or an Android tablet instead.

3. ChromeOS Flex: exclude it when Android apps are required

ChromeOS Flex can resemble ChromeOS on compatible hardware, but it does not include Google Play or Android-app support. Google’s ChromeOS Flex FAQ states this limitation directly.

That makes the decision straightforward: Flex may suit a web-first or ChromeOS-like setup in which Android apps are optional, but it cannot replace a Chromebook whose essential work happens in Android apps. There is no supported Play Store path to enable the feature on a Flex installation. If your must-have list includes Android-only software, select an Android tablet, a supported Chromebook or the conditional Windows mirroring route instead.

4. Staying with ChromeOS: check the exact Chromebook, not just the logo

Model-level support is uneven

If you are open to another Chromebook, verify the model in the Chromium Projects list of ChromeOS systems supporting Android apps. The current device guidance says that, unless otherwise specified, devices launched in 2019 or later support Android apps. The historical list also contains earlier models that support the feature and earlier models that do not, so a release year is a screening clue rather than a certification.

Check the exact board or model name, not merely a retailer’s statement that the computer has ChromeOS or a Play Store icon. Enterprise variants, regional models and older stock can differ. Google Play availability on the device still does not prove that a particular app will install, perform well or expose every feature.

Processor architecture affects app behavior

Google explains in its ChromeOS device-support documentation that many ChromeOS computers use x86 processors while many Android phones use ARM. This matters when an app contains native C or C++ components. An app may ship separate binaries for different application binary interfaces (ABIs), or it may ship only an arm64 build.

On x86 Chromebooks, ARM translation can increase processing work and battery consumption. Apps shipped only with arm64 builds may be unavailable on many ChromeOS devices. Google’s guidance to developers is: For the best user experience, provide x86 builds. For a buyer, the practical lesson is to check the app on the exact Chromebook and observe launch time, responsiveness, battery behavior and accessory support before relying on it.

Why the Play Store is not a reliability guarantee

A visible Play Store means the device supports the Android runtime, not that every Android package targets its screen, processor and input devices. A phone app may open in a narrow window, hide controls in landscape mode or require touch gestures that are uncomfortable with a trackpad. Native-code dependencies can affect availability and performance even when the listing appears in search.

Use the same app audit recommended for a tablet: identify must-have apps, check the exact model in Google Play, read current developer requirements and test the workflows that matter. If an app is arm64-only, depends on a sensor the Chromebook lacks or has an unusable large-screen layout, select another platform rather than assuming a future update will solve it.

How to test Android-app reliability before committing

Build a must-have list, not a wish list

Separate essential apps from conveniences. Include the apps needed for authentication, communication, work files, payments, school systems and hardware accessories. Record the precise feature you need from each app; “the app installs” is not the same as “the app completes the task.” This prevents a platform from passing a superficial compatibility check while failing at a critical workflow.

  • 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Use device-specific Play results

Google Play can filter listings for a watch, tablet, TV, car or another device. Use that device-aware view for every candidate model, then open the listing on the device itself after setup. Availability can differ by model, Android version, country and developer policy. Save screenshots or notes of any app marked incompatible so you can compare alternatives without guessing.

Test input and connected hardware

Large-screen guidance covers keyboards, trackpads, mice and styluses, but app support is still individual. Test text entry, pointer clicks, selection, drag-and-drop, split-screen or window resizing where relevant, and the accessories your workflow requires. If an app depends on a camera, GPS, NFC reader, biometric sensor or Bluetooth device, perform the real operation rather than checking only whether the permission prompt appears.

Test failure and recovery paths

Sign out and sign back in, rotate the screen, disconnect and reconnect accessories, switch networks and reopen the app after a restart. For Phone Link, also test what happens when the Android device leaves range or the Apps panel is unavailable. Reliability includes recovering from ordinary interruptions, not just a successful first launch.

Security and separation considerations

ChromeOS uses an Android container and separates it from the ChromeOS file system, a design covered in the UK National Cyber Security Centre’s ChromeOS device-security guidance. That separation can help limit how an Android app interacts with the rest of the system, but it does not make an untrusted app safe. Continue to review permissions, keep the operating system and apps updated, use unique credentials and install only from sources you trust.

On a tablet, Android apps run as native tablet applications within Android’s normal security model. With Phone Link, the app’s data and execution remain on the linked Android device; Windows is displaying and controlling the session. Decide where you want app data, notifications and account recovery to live before choosing the platform.

A practical decision framework

Choose an Android tablet when

  • Android apps must run without a second device.
  • Your essential apps appear as compatible with the exact tablet model.
  • Touch, a keyboard case or a stylus is sufficient for your work.
  • You accept that some apps may retain phone-style layouts or limited desktop behavior.

Choose Windows plus Phone Link when

  • You already have, or are willing to keep, a supported Android phone or tablet.
  • You need Windows desktop applications as your primary environment.
  • Mirrored access to a limited set of Android apps is enough.
  • You have verified the device, market and app behavior in Microsoft’s support information and in your own workflow.

Choose ChromeOS Flex only when

  • Android apps and Google Play are not part of the requirement.
  • Your work is primarily browser-based or otherwise compatible with the software Flex supports.
  • You specifically want a ChromeOS-like operating system on supported hardware for reasons unrelated to Android apps.

Choose another Chromebook when

  • You want local Android execution but prefer ChromeOS’s management and interface.
  • The exact model is listed as supporting Android apps.
  • Your must-have apps are available for that model and perform acceptably despite architecture and input considerations.

Bottom line for a dependable purchase

Start with an Android tablet and perform a per-app, per-model Google Play check. Add a keyboard case only if it improves your specific typing workload, and do not expect it to provide desktop operating-system behavior. A Windows laptop with Phone Link is a useful compromise for Windows users who accept that apps are mirrored from a supported Android device. ChromeOS Flex should be removed from the shortlist when Android apps are essential. If you stay with ChromeOS, verify the individual Chromebook and account for x86-versus-ARM compatibility instead of treating Play Store access as a blanket guarantee.
