The ASUS N100I-EM-A offers richer COM and display connectivity but does not explicitly promise fanless operation. BIOSTAR’s own BITWL-IHT is the closest same-vendor route, adding 9–24 V DC input and extensive industrial I/O. For managed, rugged deployments, start with Advantech’s fanless industrial platforms or MSI’s MS-CF13 family rather than a retail-style board.
What you are replacing
BIOSTAR’s Wildcat Lake range includes the BIWCL-IHT Mini-ITX industrial motherboard and the BIWCL-PAT 3.5-inch single-board computer. BIOSTAR lists DDR5-6400 memory support and two Intel i226 2.5GbE network interfaces for the Wildcat Lake boards. Those specifications make the platform attractive for compact automation controllers, gateways and other embedded systems.

There is an important qualification for a fanless build: BIOSTAR’s announcement does not explicitly state that the BIWCL-IHT is fanless. A passive heatsink, a low-noise fan and a chassis that relies on directed airflow are different thermal designs. Treat the BIWCL-IHT as a candidate only after checking its mechanical documentation for the supplied cooler, required airflow and allowable enclosure orientation.
The alternatives below are therefore compared on more than processor name. A successful replacement must fit the enclosure, accept the available DC supply, provide the required serial and display interfaces, dissipate heat without an unwanted fan, and remain supportable for the life of the equipment.

1. ASRock N100DC-ITX: the simplest explicitly fanless substitute
For a compact build that needs a straightforward replacement rather than a custom industrial platform, the ASRock N100DC-ITX is the strongest starting point in this shortlist. ASRock explicitly describes it as a fanless Mini-ITX board built around Intel N100. The processor has four E-cores and a turbo frequency of up to 3.4 GHz, which is suitable for control software, light edge processing, thin clients, data logging and gateway duties when those workloads do not require a high-power CPU.
Connectivity and expansion
- One DDR4 DIMM socket.
- A 19 V DC input jack, useful when the installation already has a 19 V brick or regulated supply.
- Two SATA3 ports for 2.5-inch drives or other SATA devices.
- One PCIe Gen3x2 M.2 storage slot.
- A PCIe 3.0 x4 physical slot that operates in x2 mode.
- An M.2 Key E slot for a wireless module or another compatible device.
- HDMI and D-Sub display outputs.
- Four USB 3.2 Gen1 ports.
- Realtek Gigabit Ethernet.
The board’s ordinary desktop-style expansion is an advantage for serviceability, but it is not a direct I/O match for a board that depends on multiple COM ports, isolated digital I/O or 2.5GbE. ASRock also states that the Wi-Fi module and power adapter are not included, so budget for both if the enclosure needs wireless networking or does not already have a suitable 19 V supply.
Where it fits best
Choose this board when explicit fanless operation is the first requirement, the enclosure accepts standard Mini-ITX, and 19 V DC is available. It is especially practical for a small machine interface, signage controller, file or protocol gateway, or laboratory instrument that needs SATA and M.2 storage but only modest industrial signaling.

Checks before ordering
- Measure the enclosure’s allowable heatsink height and compare it with the board’s complete passive cooler, not just the PCB height.
- Confirm that the 19 V supply can deliver the board, memory, storage and USB load with margin.
- Verify that the required display connector is accessible after the board is installed; D-Sub can need more rear-panel depth than HDMI.
- Confirm that Gigabit Ethernet is sufficient if the existing system relies on the Wildcat Lake board’s dual 2.5GbE ports.
2. ASUS N100I-EM-A: best when serial and display I/O matter
The ASUS N100I-EM-A is an industrial Mini-ITX option for designs centered on serial equipment, LVDS panels or a broad mix of legacy and modern display outputs. It uses Intel N100 and accepts one DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM up to 16 GB.
I/O that sets it apart
- Three COM headers or connectors for serial devices.
- VGA, HDMI and LVDS display interfaces.
- Four USB 3.2 Gen1 headers and three USB 2.0 headers for front-panel, internal or custom harnesses.
- Two SATA 6 Gb/s ports.
- M.2 E-key and M-key sockets.
- One PCIe x1 slot.
This arrangement is more suitable than the ASRock board when a panel computer needs LVDS or when a controller communicates with several serial instruments. The internal USB headers also simplify a sealed enclosure with a front-panel reader, service port or internal license device.

Thermal qualification is mandatory
ASUS publishes a 0–60 °C operating range, but its page does not label the board fanless. Do not infer passive operation from the low-power N100 processor alone. Obtain the thermal-mechanical drawing, identify the supplied heatsink or fan option, and determine whether the specified range assumes chassis airflow. A sealed cabinet that reaches 60 °C ambient can leave little thermal headroom even for a low-power SoC.
When to choose it
Select the N100I-EM-A when COM count, LVDS or VGA is more important than a documented passive design. It is also a logical choice when the system integrator can qualify its own heatsink and airflow path. If the project requires a guaranteed fanless statement from the vendor, the ASRock board has clearer evidence.
3. BIOSTAR BITWL-IHT: closest same-vendor path
The BITWL-IHT is the most natural route for a design team already using BIOSTAR documentation, procurement channels or firmware practices. BIOSTAR lists support for Intel Processor N150, Atom x7213E and Core i3-N305, giving the board a choice of newer low-power processor classes within one platform family.
Industrial interfaces and power range
- 9–24 V DC input, covering common 12 V and 24 V industrial rails and allowing more flexibility than a fixed 19 V jack.
- LVDS, with optional eDP according to the published announcement.
- SATA and USB headers for internal devices and custom cabling.
- Digital I/O and I2C for machine-interface and sensor integration.
- Configurable COM power headers.
- BIOSTAR’s broader show coverage describes support for six COM ports.
The wide input range and serial capacity are compelling for PLC-adjacent equipment, kiosks, vehicle or cabinet installations and retrofits where 24 V is already present. However, the BITWL-IHT is Thin Mini-ITX rather than a conventional full-height Mini-ITX board. Thin Mini-ITX systems can require a different backplate, low-profile cooler and carefully controlled clearance above the socket.
Do not assume it is fanless
The supplied BIOSTAR material does not establish fanless operation for the BITWL-IHT. Treat the 9–24 V specification as an electrical feature, not a thermal guarantee. Ask for the exact cooler, allowable ambient temperature, maximum sustained processor power and enclosure-airflow requirement before approving a passive design.

Best use case
Choose the BITWL-IHT when the project values 9–24 V input, multiple COM channels, digital I/O and BIOSTAR continuity. It is less attractive as a blind drop-in replacement if the existing enclosure is built around standard Mini-ITX cooler height or if passive cooling must be guaranteed from the public specification.

4. Advantech: a lifecycle-managed industrial route
Advantech’s industrial Mini-ITX family is aimed at deployments where long availability, environmental qualification and vendor support matter more than the lowest board price. Advantech describes the family as low-power, with a target below 100 W, and includes fanless wide-temperature options. Its ARK-6300 series is a rugged fanless Mini-ITX embedded-computer platform for machine automation, industrial plants, kiosk control and IoT applications.
Why this path is different
Rather than selecting one retail board and designing the enclosure around it, an Advantech deployment typically begins with a specific catalog model and its complete mechanical, thermal and lifecycle documentation. The family’s stated 25 mm height target can help with low-clearance systems, but it is a family-level figure, not a guarantee for every configuration. Memory, storage, expansion cards and cable exits can increase the installed height.
Selection process
- Define the required processor performance, memory, number of displays and serial channels.
- Filter the current regional catalog for a Mini-ITX model explicitly marked fanless and wide-temperature if those are mandatory.
- Check the exact DC input range, connector type, power budget and protection features.
- Read the environmental specification for the complete system, not just the bare board.
- Confirm availability period, repair or replacement process and BIOS or operating-system support with the regional supplier.
Advantech is the better starting point when an industrial customer needs documented qualification and a support relationship. It may be excessive for a one-off workshop controller that only needs a 19 V input and two SATA drives.
5. MSI MS-CF13: a newer low-power platform to qualify
MSI IPC lists the MS-CF13 as a Mini-ITX motherboard using Intel Alder Lake-N and Twin Lake-N system-on-chips. The platform is positioned for fanless, low-profile, ultra-low-power and multi-display systems, making it a promising lead for a new design that needs modern video output in a compact enclosure.

What is known and what is not
The platform positioning establishes the intended use, but the supplied material does not provide a complete model-level table for COM ports, storage connectors, DC input, operating temperature or exact cooler dimensions. Those details can vary by processor and board revision. Request the current MS-CF13 datasheet and confirm:
- Which Alder Lake-N or Twin Lake-N processor is fitted to the selected SKU.
- Whether the shipped heatsink is fully passive in the intended ambient range.
- Input voltage, connector and protection requirements.
- Number and type of COM ports, USB ports and display outputs.
- Memory technology and maximum capacity.
- SATA, M.2 and PCIe options.
- Lifecycle status and regional stock.
MS-CF13 is therefore best treated as a platform qualification opportunity, not as a specification-complete drop-in replacement.
How to verify a truly fanless installation
“Low power” and “fanless” are not interchangeable. Use this qualification sequence for any board whose public page does not explicitly guarantee passive cooling.
- Identify the thermal assembly. Determine whether the board ships with a passive block, a blower, a small axial fan or no cooler. Record the assembly’s height and footprint.
- Read the ambient condition. Separate operating temperature from storage temperature. Note whether the rating applies to the board, the complete embedded computer or a reduced processor-power setting.
- Calculate the heat path. Check contact pressure, thermal interface material, chassis conduction surfaces and any required side or top vents.
- Account for every heat source. Memory, NVMe drives, network controllers, expansion cards and DC regulators add heat beyond the processor’s nominal rating.
- Test the installed system. Run the real workload at the highest expected ambient temperature while logging processor temperature, throttling and system stability. A desk test in open air does not qualify a sealed cabinet.
- Define a failure response. Decide whether the system throttles, alarms, shuts down or continues at reduced performance if the enclosure temperature exceeds its limit.
Power and connector decisions
The input connector can eliminate an otherwise suitable board. The ASRock N100DC-ITX expects 19 V through a DC jack. The BIOSTAR BITWL-IHT accepts 9–24 V DC, which is more convenient for installations built around 12 V or 24 V rails. The ASUS N100I-EM-A and MSI MS-CF13 require confirmation from their exact documentation, while Advantech input specifications vary across models.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Size the supply for startup and peripheral peaks, not only the processor’s typical draw. Include the SSD or hard drive, USB-powered equipment, memory, display load and any add-in card. Keep the voltage within the board’s stated range under cable drop and transient conditions. Industrial cabinets should also account for fuse protection, polarity, surge suppression and the temperature derating of the external supply.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Mechanical fit: the checks that prevent expensive rework
- Board outline: confirm Mini-ITX versus Thin Mini-ITX and verify mounting-hole positions.
- Cooler height: measure from the motherboard surface to the highest passive fin or fan shroud.
- Back-panel access: check whether HDMI, VGA, D-Sub, COM and network connectors align with the existing cutout.
- Internal headers: leave room for right-angle plugs, locking COM cables and USB harnesses.
- Storage clearance: ensure SATA cables and M.2 modules do not interfere with the heatsink or lid.
- Airflow or conduction: follow the vendor’s required orientation and contact surfaces; do not assume a metal cabinet automatically acts as a heatsink.
Choosing by deployment scenario
Compact DIY or light embedded controller
Pick the ASRock N100DC-ITX when 19 V power, Gigabit Ethernet and standard HDMI/D-Sub output meet the requirements. Its explicit fanless description reduces thermal ambiguity.
Serial-heavy panel or instrument controller
Pick the ASUS N100I-EM-A when three COM connections, LVDS, VGA and HDMI are central. Qualify the heatsink and airflow because fanless operation is not stated.
24 V cabinet with BIOSTAR continuity
Pick the BITWL-IHT when 9–24 V input, configurable COM power, digital I/O and I2C outweigh the need for a conventional full-height Mini-ITX layout. Confirm Thin Mini-ITX clearance and passive-cooling details.
Long-lived machine or kiosk deployment
Start with an exact Advantech fanless wide-temperature model when lifecycle management, ruggedization and supplier support are contractual requirements.
New multi-display design
Evaluate MSI MS-CF13 as a current low-power platform lead, but do not freeze the design until the selected SKU’s datasheet supplies the missing I/O, power, thermal and lifecycle values.
Procurement checklist
- Write down the required CPU class, memory capacity and operating-system image.
- List every external interface: COM, digital I/O, I2C, Ethernet speed, USB, storage and display type.
- Record the available DC voltage, connector, polarity and maximum supply current.
- Set the ambient operating range and whether the enclosure is sealed.
- Require an explicit fanless statement or a complete thermal design for any no-fan specification.
- Obtain the mechanical drawing, cooler height and mounting details.
- Confirm stock, warranty, BIOS availability and expected product life for the exact SKU.
- Build a representative system and test it at the worst-case ambient and workload before committing to production.
Bottom line
For the most defensible passive Mini-ITX replacement, choose the ASRock N100DC-ITX and design around its 19 V input and ordinary consumer-style expansion. Choose the ASUS N100I-EM-A for richer serial and display I/O only after thermal qualification. Choose BIOSTAR BITWL-IHT for 9–24 V power and same-vendor industrial integration, with Thin Mini-ITX and fanless status verified separately. For rugged, lifecycle-managed projects, qualify an exact Advantech fanless model or the appropriate MSI MS-CF13 configuration using current vendor documentation. In every case, mechanical clearance, connector compatibility, ambient rating and supply availability must be checked before purchase.
