If you need a hobbyist 3D scanner before Bambu Lab’s announced S1 is available, the two evidence-backed alternatives to investigate are the Revopoint POP 3 Plus and Creality CR-Scan Otter. The POP 3 Plus has the more complete published specification set: Revopoint claims up to 0.08 mm single-frame accuracy, up to 0.04 mm single-frame precision, up to 18 frames per second and a 150–400 mm working distance. Creality’s Otter documentation confirms its software and manual resources, but the evidence available here does not establish a comparable specification or an independent performance winner.
Your choice should follow the job—small mechanical parts, general hobby objects, larger pieces or appearance capture—and the complete scan-to-mesh-to-print workflow. A scanner’s headline number does not by itself produce a dimensionally exact CAD model or a printable mesh.

What is happening with the Bambu Lab S1?
Bambu Lab’s community account published the headline “Bambu Lab S1: 3D scanner, coming November” on October 12, 2026. That is an announcement, not a complete product specification or a confirmed shipping schedule. The announcement available for this guide does not establish the S1’s price, scanning technology, accuracy, software compatibility, supported operating systems, regional availability or final delivery date.

That uncertainty matters when you are deciding whether to buy now. Treat the S1 as an upcoming product to monitor rather than a scanner you can currently compare on measured terms. A purchase made before its specifications are published should be based on the alternatives’ documented workflow and your immediate project, not on assumptions about how the S1 will perform.

Revopoint POP 3 Plus: the specification-led option
What Revopoint actually claims
Revopoint describes the POP 3 Plus as using dual-camera infrared structured light. Its product information lists up to 0.08 mm single-frame accuracy, up to 0.04 mm single-frame precision, up to 18 fps and a 150–400 mm working distance. “Up to” is important: these are maximum or best-case manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every object, distance, texture or scan will reach those figures.
Accuracy and precision are different. Accuracy describes how close a result is to the true value; precision describes how consistently repeated measurements agree with one another. A scanner can be precise but systematically offset, or accurate in a controlled test while producing a poor mesh on a dark, shiny or featureless part. Neither figure should be converted into a promise that a mating mechanical component will fit without measurement and CAD checking.

Revopoint says Revo Scan handles capture and post-processing. The POP 3 Plus support information lists Windows, macOS, iOS and Android compatibility and includes an x86_64 architecture note. Operating-system names alone are not a complete readiness check: confirm the current Revo Scan version, supported processor architecture, graphics requirements, cable or wireless connection method and mobile-device support for your exact phone or tablet.
A practical test is to install the current software before opening the scanner. Check that it launches, recognizes the intended connection, exports the file types your CAD or slicing software accepts and has enough storage for a full project. Compatibility details can change after a product page is indexed, so use the live support information at the time of purchase.

Where it fits best
The POP 3 Plus is the easier candidate to evaluate when you want documented numerical specifications and a stated multi-platform workflow. It is a reasonable shortlist item for hobbyists considering smaller reverse-engineering projects or general object capture, provided they understand that single-frame figures do not describe the dimensional error of a completed, aligned mesh.
Creality CR-Scan Otter: a software-and-documentation candidate
What is confirmed
Creality maintains an Otter-specific download page that lists Creality Scan and a CR-Scan Otter user manual. Those resources are useful because a scanner is only practical when its capture application, drivers and export process work on your computer. The available evidence does not provide an independently measured scan-quality result, a like-for-like accuracy figure, a working-distance range or a verified current price for the Otter.

How to evaluate it without inventing a winner
Download the current Creality Scan package and read the Otter manual before ordering. Look for your operating system, required graphics hardware, connection method, export formats, firmware procedure and any instructions about object tracking or calibration. If a project depends on a particular accuracy, ask whether the figure is single-frame or assembled-scan performance, how it was measured and whether it applies to the object size and surface you intend to capture.
Because the evidence does not establish matching test conditions for the Otter and POP 3 Plus, it would be misleading to declare one the faster, more accurate or better scanner overall. The Otter belongs on a shortlist when its software workflow, local support and price in your region fit your project; verify those points directly rather than inferring them from the existence of a download page.
Choose by the object you need to scan
Small mechanical parts and reverse engineering
Small brackets, knobs, housings and replacement parts create the strictest expectations. Before choosing a scanner, define the dimensions that must be recovered: overall envelope, hole centers, shaft diameters, mating faces or cosmetic contours. A scan can provide a useful reference mesh while still being unsuitable as a dimensionally exact replacement.

- Use stable fixturing so the part cannot move while you capture multiple views.
- Plan how the scanner will track the object; repeated geometry and featureless faces can cause alignment drift.
- Measure critical dimensions with calipers or another trusted tool and use those measurements to scale and validate the mesh.
- Rebuild functional geometry in CAD instead of treating the raw triangular mesh as a finished parametric model.
The POP 3 Plus’s advertised 0.04 mm precision and 0.08 mm accuracy are useful reference points for a specification comparison, but they are not a tolerance that your printed part automatically inherits. For the Otter, obtain the manufacturer’s current specifications and test guidance before assuming it meets a particular fit requirement.

For figurines, hand tools, household objects and cosplay parts, complete coverage and clean alignment may matter more than a sub-tenth-millimetre headline. The useful questions are whether the scanner can maintain tracking around the shape, whether the software lets you remove unwanted geometry and whether the exported mesh can be repaired without losing the details you care about.
Capture the object in overlapping views, keep the scanner within its recommended distance and inspect each pass before moving the object. A turntable can make repeatable rotation easier, but it is not automatically required; verify that the scanner and software support the setup and that the object has enough visual features for reliable alignment.
Larger objects
Large objects require a plan for coverage, alignment and data handling. A scanner that works well at one distance may not be convenient when you must walk around furniture, a vehicle component or a large prop. The POP 3 Plus specification lists a 150–400 mm working distance; that is the distance range Revopoint states for its system, not a claim that every large object will be captured in one pass.
For a large project, divide the object into logical zones, record reference markers or distinctive features if the workflow calls for them, and save intermediate scans. Aligning many partial scans can magnify small errors, so inspect the overall shape and critical measurements before closing the mesh.

Color and appearance capture
If the goal is a textured digital asset rather than a dimensionally useful mesh, confirm color, texture and lighting capabilities explicitly. The evidence available for the POP 3 Plus and CR-Scan Otter in this guide does not establish a complete, comparable color-capture specification. Do not buy either scanner solely on the assumption that an infrared structured-light system will reproduce appearance in the way a dedicated photogrammetry or texture workflow does.
A reliable scan-to-print workflow
Scanning is one stage in a chain. The following sequence keeps capture errors separate from mesh and printing errors.
- Define the output. Decide whether you need a visual copy, a watertight mesh for slicing or editable CAD for a replacement part. Record the dimensions and tolerances that matter.
- Prepare the object. Clean dust and loose debris. Remove moving parts or document their positions. Glossy, transparent, very dark or repetitive surfaces may need a compatible matte treatment, removable markers or a different capture strategy; follow the scanner manufacturer’s instructions before applying anything.
- Prepare the workspace. Use even lighting, a stable table and enough room to maintain the recommended working distance. Connect the scanner and verify that the current capture software recognizes it.
- Choose tracking aids only when needed. Marker dots, a turntable or scanning spray are conditional supplies, not universal requirements. Confirm compatibility and removal safety for the object’s material and finish.
- Capture overlapping views. Move around the object slowly, keep the scanner within its usable distance and preserve overlap between passes. Watch the live preview for holes, doubled edges or loss of tracking.
- Review and align. Delete stray points and failed frames. Align separate scans using the software’s supported method, then inspect the result from every direction. Do not hide a misalignment by immediately filling holes.
- Build and repair the mesh. Remove the table, supports and unwanted background. Close only genuine openings, smooth conservatively and check for inverted normals, non-manifold edges and self-intersections.
- Scale and validate. Compare known distances on the object with caliper or reference measurements. Apply scale before exporting. For functional parts, rebuild or constrain critical faces in CAD and verify clearances.
- Export and slice. Choose a format supported by your CAD or slicer, orient the model, add supports where necessary and inspect the sliced layers. A clean-looking scan can still contain thin walls, internal holes or disconnected shells.
- Print and compare. Measure the first print, record deviations and adjust the CAD model or process. Treat the first print as validation, not proof that the scanner’s advertised specification was achieved.
Scanning is not the same as reverse engineering
A scanner normally produces a point cloud or polygon mesh. Reverse engineering turns that captured shape into a design that can be edited, dimensioned and manufactured. The distinction determines which software and skills you need.
- Reference mesh: useful for visual duplication, fitting a new part around an existing object or creating a rough sculpt.
- Printable mesh: a watertight, correctly oriented model with repaired topology and appropriate wall thickness. It can be sliced, but its dimensions still need checking.
- Editable CAD: a feature-based or surface model reconstructed from the mesh and controlled by explicit dimensions, constraints and datums.
For a replacement bracket, for example, scan the surrounding geometry, measure hole centers independently, create planes and sketches in CAD, and use the scan as a reference. Simply exporting the scanner’s mesh may preserve an imperfection that causes a poor fit or reproduce damage that was never part of the original design.
Surface, tracking and alignment problems
Glossy, transparent or dark surfaces
Optical scanners need usable visual information. Reflections, transparency and very low contrast can create holes or unstable measurements. Use only a removable, material-safe scanning treatment recommended for the equipment and object. Test a hidden area first, and do not assume that a spray is harmless to painted, coated or porous surfaces.

Featureless or repetitive geometry
A smooth cylinder or a repeating pattern can leave the software unsure how one frame relates to the next. Change the viewing angle, add approved reference markers or use a supported turntable workflow. If tracking repeatedly jumps, stop and save the last good pass rather than accumulating misaligned data.
Occluded areas
Undersides, deep recesses and narrow channels may never be visible from one position. Capture them separately, then align the additional pass using overlapping geometry or the software’s supported reference method. Filling an unseen area is a modeling decision, not a measurement.
Drift in a long scan
Small alignment errors can accumulate as you move around a large object. Break the job into sections, include distinctive overlap and check a known dimension between sections. If the two ends of the finished scan do not meet, return to the individual passes and realign them instead of stretching the entire mesh indiscriminately.
Software and computer checks before purchase
Do not treat a scanner as a USB accessory that works with any machine. Confirm these points in the current manufacturer documentation:
- Operating-system version and whether your processor architecture is supported.
- Graphics hardware, memory and storage requirements for capture and mesh processing.
- Connection type, cable length, wireless requirements and whether a mobile device needs a specific adapter.
- Supported export formats and whether your CAD program or slicer can import them without conversion.
- Firmware-update procedure and what happens if an update is interrupted.
- Whether capture, alignment, cleanup and export are available in the same application or require separate tools.
For the POP 3 Plus, the documented platform list is Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, with an x86_64 note on the support information. For the Otter, Creality’s download page and user manual are the starting points, but the current compatibility details must be checked for your exact computer. Software labels and requirements can change between releases.
Price, availability and what not to assume
Scanner prices are regional and volatile. Revopoint product-page sale prices appeared differently across indexed versions, so no single price is reliable enough to publish here without checking the live regional store at the time you buy. No verified Creality CR-Scan Otter price was captured in the available evidence. Include taxes, shipping, return conditions and any required accessories in your budget.
Do not assume that a promotional price recurs, that a bundle includes a turntable or markers, or that a software license will remain compatible with every future operating-system release. Confirm the contents of the exact listing and retain the invoice and firmware version for support.
A practical decision framework
Choose the POP 3 Plus when
- You want a documented dual-camera infrared structured-light design and a published set of headline figures to compare.
- You need a stated 150–400 mm working-distance range and up to 18 fps specification as planning references.
- You expect to capture on Windows, macOS, iOS or Android and have confirmed the current Revo Scan requirements for your device.
- You are comfortable treating 0.08 mm accuracy and 0.04 mm precision as manufacturer specifications rather than guaranteed finished-part tolerances.
Choose the CR-Scan Otter when
- Creality Scan and the Otter manual meet your computer, export and workflow requirements.
- The current regional price, warranty and support arrangements suit your project.
- You are willing to validate the scanner on a representative object instead of inferring performance from an unverified comparison.
Wait for more Bambu Lab S1 information when
- You do not need a scanner immediately and want to compare confirmed price, software, accuracy, compatibility and shipping details.
- Your purchase depends on integration with a particular Bambu Lab workflow that has not yet been documented.
- You can postpone the project without relying on an announced-but-unspecified product.
Questions to answer before placing the order
- What is the smallest feature and the largest object I must capture?
- Which dimensions must be measured independently for a safe fit?
- Do I need a reference mesh, a printable mesh or editable CAD?
- Can my computer run the current capture and processing software?
- Will the object’s color, gloss, transparency or geometry challenge optical tracking?
- What export format does my CAD or slicer require?
- Is the quoted price live for my country, and what exactly is included?
- Can I return the scanner if a representative test object cannot be captured reliably?
Answering those questions is more useful than choosing a scanner from a single accuracy number. The POP 3 Plus is the better-documented specification choice in this shortlist; the CR-Scan Otter remains a candidate to investigate through its current software and manual; and the S1 should be treated as an announced November product until Bambu Lab publishes a complete, region-specific specification and availability plan.
