Best Alternatives If the Zelda Switch 2 40th Anniversary Edition Is Sold Out

If the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is unavailable, the best choice depends on what you value most: the collector-style console itself, current-generation hardware, or simply the Zelda design. Keep checking authorized retailers if the themed hardware is essential; otherwise, pair a standard Switch 2 with Nintendo’s matching Zelda case and screen protector. If the appearance matters more than Switch 2 performance, the older Tears of the Kingdom OLED model is the other meaningful alternative.

The anniversary edition is scheduled for October 29, 2026, and stock information is changing by region. The options below separate confirmed product differences from dated availability reports, so you can choose without assuming that a restock or retailer event is guaranteed.

What the Zelda Switch 2 anniversary edition actually includes

Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition on September 8, 2026, for release on October 29, 2026. The Triforce-themed treatment appears on the Switch 2 console, its dock and the Joy-Con 2 controllers. Nintendo also announced two separate accessories for the same date: a matching Pro Controller with display stand, and a carrying case supplied with a screen protector.

The anniversary console does not bundle a game. Nintendo’s corporate announcement states: “This product does not come with a game.” That matters when comparing the hardware with a standard console sold alongside a game or when calculating the cost of a Zelda setup.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

The Japanese model is a Japanese-language system intended for Japan. Do not assume an imported unit has the same regional configuration, warranty treatment, store access or suitability as a locally sold Switch 2. The announced Japanese suggested retail prices, including tax, are 62,980 yen for the console, 12,980 yen for the Pro Controller with display stand and 3,980 yen for the carrying case and screen protector. These are Japanese prices only, not worldwide or US prices.

Choice Generation Where the Zelda design appears Game included Regional or condition notes
40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 Console, dock and Joy-Con 2 No Japanese announcement describes a Japanese-language, Japan-only system; local editions may differ
Standard Switch 2 plus anniversary case Switch 2 Carrying case and screen protector only Not stated Buy the console and accessory separately in your market
Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch Original Switch OLED Console and dock styling from the Tears of the Kingdom design Not stated Previous generation; new or used availability and price vary
Standard Switch 2 Switch 2 None Not stated Current-generation option without Zelda trim

Option 1: Keep looking for the exact anniversary console

Choose this route when the themed console, dock and Joy-Con 2 are the reason you are buying. No accessory bundle reproduces that treatment. Because limited-edition stock is regional and changes quickly, use official channels and authorized retailers serving your country rather than relying on an old listing or an imported Japanese unit.

What the dated stock reports say

An official US Nintendo Store search result showed the anniversary console and matching controller as sold out on October 13, 2026. That is a time-stamped observation, not a permanent status. A GamesRadar+ report dated October 9 said select US Best Buy stores expected limited quantities during November 5 Ocarina of Time launch events. The report does not establish how many units each store would receive or guarantee that a particular location would have stock.

A September report about the UK and Ireland said Nintendo Store pages would announce replenishment through the Nintendo Store app. Treat that as the stated notification method, not as a promised date. Stock can disappear before an alert is opened, and availability may differ between the UK and Ireland.

A practical checking routine

  1. Confirm the edition name and the retailer’s region before you search. The Japanese-language model is not automatically an equivalent substitute for a locally sold system.
  2. Check the Nintendo Store for your country and the authorized retailers that normally sell Nintendo hardware. Record whether the listing is for the console, the Pro Controller or the case; they are separate products.
  3. If you are in the UK or Ireland, install or monitor the Nintendo Store app because the reported replenishment notices were supposed to appear there.
  4. If you are in the US, check participating local stores around the November 5, 2026 Ocarina of Time event mentioned in the October 9 report, while confirming the store’s own inventory before travelling.
  5. Read the product details at checkout for language, included items, return terms and warranty region. A marketplace listing that omits those details is a reason to stop, not a reason to pay more quickly.

How to avoid a bad “restock” purchase

  • Do not treat a search-engine snippet, social-media post or cached product page as live inventory.
  • Compare the seller name, condition and regional model. A listing can show a photograph of the anniversary console while shipping a standard Switch 2.
  • Check whether the price is the retailer’s current price or a reseller’s markup. No verified resale-price comparison is available here, so do not use an assumed premium to judge whether a listing is fair.
  • Make sure the order is for the console if that is your goal; the matching case and Pro Controller can appear as separate results.

Option 2: Buy a standard Switch 2 and add the official Zelda case

This is the closest practical substitute for someone who wants current-generation hardware and visible Zelda styling but cannot obtain the collector console. Nintendo announced a Zelda 40th Anniversary carrying case with screen protector for October 29, 2026. It is an accessory: it does not change the finish of a standard Switch 2, its dock or its Joy-Con 2.

What this setup gives you

  • A Switch 2 platform for compatible current and original Switch games.
  • Official Zelda presentation when the console is carried or stored.
  • A screen protector supplied with the announced case, which can be useful for protecting the display during travel.
  • More flexibility if the themed console remains unavailable, because the console and accessory can be purchased from different authorized sellers.

The trade-off is visual and collectible rather than technical. The case covers the hardware during transport, but the console, dock and controllers remain the standard versions. It also adds a second purchase, and the Japanese suggested retail price of 3,980 yen including tax applies only to the Japanese accessory announcement; check the current local price before ordering.

Buying and fitting steps

  1. Choose a locally sold Switch 2 and verify that the package is the console model you intend to use, not a case-only listing.
  2. Confirm that the Zelda case is designed for Switch 2, not the original Switch or Switch OLED.
  3. Check that the screen protector is included in the specific regional package; the announcement describes the case and protector together, but retail packaging can differ by market.
  4. Apply the protector in a dust-free area before placing the console in the case. Follow the included alignment and cleaning instructions rather than pressing dust under the film.
  5. Keep the console, dock and Joy-Con 2 in their standard configuration and use the case for travel. Do not expect the accessory to add Triforce markings to the dock or controllers.

Option 3: Choose the Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch

The Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch is the right alternative when Zelda styling is more important than owning the newest platform. It is an original Nintendo Switch OLED, not a Switch 2. Nintendo’s 2023 investor presentation says the edition launched on April 29, 2023 and was aimed at first-time buyers as well as people seeking an additional or replacement console.

Why it can still make sense

  • The Zelda-themed hardware is built into the console and dock rather than limited to a carrying accessory.
  • It may be easier to find as new old stock or used hardware than a newly launched anniversary edition, depending on your region.
  • It can be a sensible second console for a household that already owns Switch games and accessories.

The limitation is the generation. You are buying original Switch OLED hardware, so check the games you intend to play and the seller’s condition description before treating it as an equivalent to Switch 2. Nintendo’s support information says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, with some exceptions; that does not mean every Switch 2 game runs on the older OLED model.

Checklist for a used OLED purchase

  • Ask for the exact model, serial information where appropriate, photographs of the OLED screen and close-ups of the themed dock.
  • Confirm that the console charges, the Joy-Con rails work and the dock outputs video.
  • Check whether the original dock, Joy-Con, charger and straps are included. Missing parts change the real cost.
  • Verify that the system can connect to the Nintendo eShop in your region and that the seller has removed their account.
  • Inspect for screen burn-in, deep scratches, swollen batteries, liquid damage and loose analog sticks.
  • Use a protected payment method and a return period when buying from a reseller. Availability and price for this discontinued-generation design are not fixed.

Option 4: Buy a standard Switch 2 and skip the Zelda trim

If your priority is the Switch 2 platform, a standard model is the least complicated substitute. You avoid waiting for a limited edition and do not pay for a themed finish you cannot verify. This is also the clearest choice when you need a console for a particular Switch 2 game rather than a collector item.

Before buying, check Nintendo’s compatibility information for the games you own. Switch 2 supports compatible original Switch physical and digital games, but Nintendo notes that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Compatibility is therefore a title-by-title question, especially if you are upgrading from an original Switch or an OLED model.

Compatibility details that affect every alternative

Original Joy-Con controllers

Original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console. This can be useful for multiplayer or as a temporary spare, yet it does not turn an older controller into a fully integrated Switch 2 control set.

Docks are not interchangeable

The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. If you buy a used Tears of the Kingdom OLED as a second system, or plan to reuse an older dock, budget for the correct dock and power accessories for each console. Do not assume that a dock fitting the older tablet will work with the newer hardware.

Storage cards

Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for game storage, not conventional microSD cards. An older card from an original Switch may therefore be unsuitable for expanding Switch 2 storage. Check the card specification before moving a library or purchasing a new card.

Physical and digital game ownership

For original Switch games, confirm compatibility before migrating a digital library or buying used cartridges. A game that launches on Switch 2 may still have limitations, and a title that requires an update may behave differently if the console is offline. For the older OLED alternative, check that the games you want are original-Switch releases or otherwise supported on that generation.

Regional language, warranty and import decisions

The Japanese anniversary system is explicitly described as Japanese-language and for Japan only. Imported hardware can have different menus, bundled documentation, warranty coverage, power requirements or eShop arrangements from a console sold in your market. Those differences can matter more than the decorative design if the system is for a child, a shared household or a buyer who expects local customer support.

When comparing any imported listing, verify the language and account region, the included power adapter, the seller’s return policy and whether the warranty is honored outside Japan. A lower converted yen price is not a reliable estimate of your final cost because shipping, taxes, import charges and after-sales support vary.

Which alternative fits your priorities?

Your priority Best fit Reason Main compromise
The anniversary console’s Triforce hardware Keep checking official and authorized listings Only this route provides the themed console, dock and Joy-Con 2 Stock is uncertain and regional
Current-generation performance plus some Zelda styling Standard Switch 2 with the anniversary case Retains Switch 2 while adding an official travel accessory The console and dock are not themed
Zelda-themed hardware at the lowest generation cost Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch Built-in Zelda design on previous-generation OLED hardware Not a Switch 2; condition and price vary
Fastest straightforward upgrade Standard Switch 2 No limited-edition stock hunt or accessory requirement No Zelda design

A purchase sequence that minimizes regret

  1. Write down whether your non-negotiable is the themed console, Switch 2 compatibility or the lowest price. Pick one primary requirement before looking at listings.
  2. Check local Nintendo channels and authorized retailers for the exact anniversary edition. Use the dated US and UK/Ireland leads as prompts to check, not as guarantees.
  3. If no verified unit is available and Switch 2 is the priority, buy the standard console from a local seller and decide separately whether the case is worth its local price.
  4. If the Zelda appearance is the priority and Switch 2 games are not required, evaluate a new or used Tears of the Kingdom OLED using the hardware checklist.
  5. Confirm game compatibility, storage-card requirements and accessory compatibility before transferring anything from an original Switch.
  6. Keep receipts and photograph the serial label and package contents on arrival. This makes a missing-accessory or wrong-region dispute easier to resolve.

Bottom line for a sold-out launch

Do not pay an unverified premium merely to avoid waiting. Keep checking the official regional channels if the 40th Anniversary console itself is the goal. For most buyers who want Switch 2 now, a standard console plus the official Zelda case is the balanced substitute. Select the Tears of the Kingdom OLED only when its previous-generation status is acceptable and the seller’s condition, accessories and regional support check out.
