There is no single best detour from Phoenix to Casa Grande. Start by checking the live incident, closure, cameras and travel times in ADOT’s AZ511 system, then compare your complete trip in a current navigation app. For a localized slowdown, staying on I-10 may still be fastest. For a broad I-10 disruption, compare an eastern corridor using US 60 and the SR 79, SR 87 and SR 287 network. Those highways are alternatives to evaluate—not guaranteed faster routes—and rural sections generally have less capacity than a freeway.
What to do before leaving Phoenix
Check the actual conditions for your departure time rather than choosing a detour from a static map. ADOT provides Arizona highway information through the AZ511 website, the AZ511 mobile app and the 511 telephone service. The system reports crashes, construction, closures, roadwork, weather advisories, message boards, truck restrictions, camera views, alerts and travel times.

- Enter your precise Phoenix starting point and Casa Grande destination in a current navigation app. A trip from north Phoenix is not the same as one from the airport, Tempe or the West Valley, and a destination on the north side of Casa Grande may favor a different connection than one south of town.
- Open AZ511 and inspect I-10 from your origin through the Casa Grande area. Identify the incident location, whether all lanes are blocked, the estimated duration if one is posted, nearby closures and active roadwork.
- Inspect the proposed alternate as well. Check US 60, SR 79, SR 87 and SR 287 for incidents, closures, cameras and weather. A detour only helps if it is open and moving.
- Compare the travel time for the entire journey, not just the minutes shown for the congested I-10 segment. A route that avoids a 20-minute queue can still lose time on a longer approach or on a rural two-lane section.
- Recheck immediately before departure. Conditions can change between planning and entering the roadway.
If you call 511, do so before driving or with a hands-free device. Follow temporary signs, law-enforcement directions and posted restrictions even when an app suggests another path.

The lane descriptions in the table come from ADOT’s October 2018 Pinal County traffic report. They describe the network context at that time, not today’s traffic, construction or pavement condition. AZ511 and a current navigation service are the authorities for conditions when you travel.

Option 1: Stay on I-10 when the problem is limited
Do not leave the interstate automatically because a map shows red traffic. If the incident is confined to a short section, traffic is still moving, or the eastern roads show comparable delays, remaining on I-10 avoids extra turns, unfamiliar junctions and lower-capacity segments.
Use this choice when
- The incident is downstream of your current position and AZ511 shows lanes open with a manageable delay.
- The alternate requires a long backtrack to reach US 60 or another connector.
- AZ511 cameras show the bypass is congested, blocked or affected by weather or roadwork.
- Your vehicle, passengers or driving experience make an unfamiliar rural route undesirable and the interstate remains passable.
When staying becomes a poor choice
A full closure, a crash with no reliable reopening estimate, or a queue that extends well beyond the incident can change the calculation. Compare the complete alternate journey before exiting. Once you leave I-10, re-entry may be difficult if local roads are also filling with diverted traffic.
Option 2: Eastern bypass using US 60 and SR 79
The eastern alternative begins with the Phoenix-area US 60 network and uses state highways toward the Florence and Casa Grande area. ADOT’s Pinal County traffic report identifies connections among US 60, SR 79, SR 87, SR 287 and I-10. Your navigation app must determine the exact sequence from your starting point and destination; there is no one US 60–SR 79 itinerary that fits every trip.

If the disruption affects a substantial stretch of I-10, an eastern corridor can move the trip away from the incident rather than merely bypassing one interchange. It is most useful when AZ511 shows the state-highway network open and the full-trip estimate is better than waiting on I-10.
Why SR 79 is not a freeway substitute
ADOT describes SR 79 through Florence as a local route with numerous access points and businesses. Rural portions generally have one lane in each direction, according to the October 2018 report. Turning traffic, commercial entrances, local errands, farm equipment, a crash or a closure can therefore erase the time you expected to gain. Treat SR 79 as a capacity-limited local highway, not as an interstate with the same recovery options.

Check the Florence segment carefully
Look at live cameras and incident reports before committing. If traffic is already diverting through Florence, the route can become slower precisely when I-10 is congested. Do not assume that a clear-looking line on a small-scale map represents a clear road.
Option 3: Compare SR 87 and SR 287 through the eastern network
ADOT describes SR 87 as connecting with SR 287 in Coolidge and with SR 79 in Florence. SR 287 continues south toward Eloy. Depending on where you start in the Phoenix area and where you need to finish in Casa Grande, a live map may show one of these connections as a better fit than the other.
How to evaluate the path
- Confirm the route actually moves around the I-10 incident instead of rejoining immediately upstream of the queue.
- Check whether your destination is easier to reach from the Coolidge, Florence or Eloy side of the network.
- Inspect every state-highway segment for closures, crashes and weather before departure.
- Account for the lower capacity of rural one-lane-each-way sections described by ADOT’s 2018 report.
SR 87 and SR 287 are corridor candidates, not a standing official detour recommendation. Exact directions can change with construction, access restrictions and your endpoints. Let current navigation calculate the legal connection after you verify it against AZ511.
Choose based on your starting point and destination
North Phoenix, Scottsdale or the East Valley
An eastern corridor may be reachable without first traveling deep into the I-10 queue, but the approach to US 60 can itself be busy. Compare the time from your actual origin, including the local streets or freeways needed to reach US 60, rather than comparing only the state-highway portion.
Central Phoenix, the airport or Tempe
For these origins, the route to an eastern bypass can add substantial urban driving before you reach the rural network. If I-10 is moving slowly but continuously, staying on it may be preferable. If I-10 is closed or a major crash has stopped traffic, calculate the full route to US 60 and then onward to Casa Grande.

West Valley origins
Reaching the eastern network can require crossing more of the Phoenix metro area. A detour that looks shorter on a statewide map may be slower once local congestion is included. Use the navigation app’s live estimate from your precise starting address.

Casa Grande is not a single exit or intersection. Enter the final address, not merely “Casa Grande,” so the app can choose the correct approach from I-10, SR 287, SR 79 or another connector. A route that is sensible for the north side of the city may add unnecessary local driving for a destination elsewhere.
A practical decision process for an active I-10 delay
- Locate the cause. Use AZ511’s incident description, map, cameras and message boards to determine whether you are dealing with congestion, a crash, construction, weather or a closure.
- Measure the scope. Note where the queue begins and ends. A short delay and a highway closure require different decisions.
- Build at least two complete routes. Compare I-10, an eastern US 60–SR 79 option and, where the map supports it, an SR 87–SR 287 option.
- Check the bypass itself. Verify every road is open and inspect current reports for Florence, Coolidge, Eloy and the approach roads that your route uses.
- Compare total travel time. Include the time to reach the detour, not just the segment that avoids I-10. AZ511 defines “Free Flow” as the normal expected travel time without congestion at posted speeds; actual travel time can differ.
- Apply your driving constraints. Consider daylight, weather, fuel, vehicle size, passengers, towing, accessibility needs and your comfort on rural roads.
- Commit only when the evidence supports it. If the alternate is not clearly open and advantageous, remain on I-10 and follow traffic controls.
- Recheck after starting. A new crash or road closure can invalidate the original comparison. Pull over safely or have a passenger check; do not handle a phone while driving.
How to compare travel times without being misled
Use the same endpoints and departure time
Changing the Phoenix origin, Casa Grande destination or departure time changes the result. Compare every route from the same starting point to the same final address, using the same moment’s traffic data.
Separate normal travel from incident delay
A route can have a longer normal distance but a lower current total time if I-10 is stopped. Conversely, an apparently short rural bypass can be slower because it has one lane each way, frequent access points or traffic diverted from the interstate.
Do not turn a planning estimate into a promise
No verified source establishes a universal number of minutes saved by taking US 60, SR 79, SR 87 or SR 287. Travel-time displays are snapshots and can change while you are deciding. Use them to compare options at that moment, not to guarantee arrival time.

Rural-route risks and preparation
Moving off I-10 changes the driving environment. The rural portions of SR 79, SR 87 and SR 287 described by ADOT generally have one lane in each direction. That means fewer passing opportunities and less redundancy when a vehicle stops, a crash occurs or a local access point backs up.
- Fuel before committing if your tank is low; do not assume every segment has a convenient service stop.
- Keep extra following distance and expect slower vehicles, turning traffic and agricultural equipment.
- Use headlights and reduce speed in dust, rain or poor visibility. Check AZ511 weather advisories before departure.
- Do not stop on a travel lane to reprogram navigation. Pull into a legal, safe location.
- Respect weight, oversize-load, truck and other posted restrictions shown by AZ511 or on roadside signs.
- Follow local speed limits and be prepared for sudden changes where a highway enters a town.
Situations that call for different choices
Crash with lanes open
Watch the trend in AZ511 and compare the live full-trip times. If traffic is flowing and the bypass is slower, staying on I-10 avoids unnecessary complexity.
Complete I-10 closure
Do not enter a closed section because a navigation app has not updated. Check official closure information, follow law-enforcement instructions and use an alternate only after confirming it is open and legally accessible.
Construction or scheduled roadwork
Roadwork can affect both the interstate and the state-highway network. Read the current advisory and inspect cameras; a route that is normally useful may have lane shifts or restrictions during the project.

Weather or reduced visibility
Compare weather advisories for the entire route, not just Phoenix. A longer rural path may expose you to conditions that are not present at your origin. If conditions are unsafe, delay the trip rather than treating a detour as a solution.
Heavy traffic on every option
When I-10 and the eastern roads are all slow, the safest decision may be to remain on the route with clearer information, better capacity and more services. Avoid weaving between routes based on small, rapidly changing differences.
What not to rely on
Personal route suggestions in local discussion threads can explain how a driver once traveled, but they are anecdotal and do not establish a current official recommendation. In particular, an individual mention of SR 87 or SR 187 should not be treated as a validated itinerary for every Phoenix–Casa Grande trip. Network connections, conditions and your endpoints still need live verification.
Likewise, the October 2018 ADOT traffic report is useful for understanding how the roads connect and for noting the rural one-lane context. It does not establish today’s congestion, project status, travel time or safety ranking.
