Best AirPrint Printers for iPad: How to Choose a Wireless Model

The safest choice for wireless iPad printing is a Wi‑Fi printer that supports Apple AirPrint. AirPrint lets an iPad print without installing printer drivers. Before buying, verify the exact model—not merely the product family or a “wireless” label—in Apple’s AirPrint compatibility directory, then confirm the manufacturer’s current specifications for your region.

Once the printer is on Wi‑Fi and the iPad is connected to that same network, printing normally takes a few taps: open the document or photo, choose Share or Actions, select Print, choose the AirPrint printer, set available options, and tap Print. This guide explains how to identify a suitable printer, compare the features that affect ownership, set it up, and recover when the printer does not appear.

What makes a printer work wirelessly with an iPad?

Look for two capabilities together: Wi‑Fi networking and Apple AirPrint support. “Wireless printer” by itself is not enough. A printer can have Wi‑Fi and still lack the driverless printing protocol that iPadOS expects. Apple describes AirPrint as its technology for printing from an iPad without downloading or installing printer drivers. Its compatibility information is supplied by manufacturers and updated regularly, so check the exact model in Apple’s AirPrint directory before placing an order.

Model-level verification matters because a series can contain several versions with different networking features. Match the complete model name and regional suffix shown on the box or product page to the entry in Apple’s directory. If the model is absent, do not assume that a similar-looking model, a predecessor, or a version sold in another country has the same support.

AirPrint works over a network rather than through a special iPad cable. Apple documents Wi‑Fi and wired network connections, but a wireless iPad setup requires the printer and iPad to use the same Wi‑Fi network. A printer attached to a computer by Bluetooth is not an AirPrint arrangement, and Apple specifically excludes printers plugged into an Apple AirPort Base Station or AirPort Time Capsule USB port from the supported connection paths described in its instructions.

How to choose the right AirPrint printer

There is no defensible universal “best” model without knowing your pages, documents, space and budget. Use the following checks on the exact model you are considering. They separate genuine iPad compatibility from a convenient-sounding wireless specification and help avoid an inexpensive printer that becomes costly or inconvenient to operate.

1. Confirm AirPrint before comparing anything else

Start with Apple’s directory, then cross-check the manufacturer’s current specification sheet. Save a screenshot or note the full model identifier if you are shopping through a retailer whose listing combines several variants. A listing that says “works with phones and tablets” is weaker evidence than an explicit AirPrint statement tied to the exact model.

2. Decide whether you need colour

Choose a colour printer if photographs, diagrams, highlighted documents or colour forms are part of your normal workload. If you print mainly text, a monochrome model may be a simpler fit. Check that the model’s AirPrint listing and manufacturer documentation cover the colour or monochrome version you intend to buy; names can be similar while capabilities differ.

3. Match the print technology to your workload

Use the inkjet-versus-laser choice as a workload decision rather than a marketing label. Inkjet models are commonly considered when colour and image printing are priorities. Laser models are commonly considered when most output is text and regular document throughput is more important. Whichever technology you choose, verify the exact consumable type, replacement procedure and published page-yield information for your region.

Canon PIXMA TS4320 – Wireless Color Inkjet Printer with Print, Copy, Scan | Cost Efficient Multi-Function Photo Printer, Copier, Scanner for Home Use, Compact Design, Easy Setup

  • Crisp, Vibrant Prints - Experience impressive print quality for both documents and photos, thanks to its 2-cartridge hybrid ink system that delivers sharp text and vivid colors

  • Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations

4. Estimate how often you will print

Separate occasional household printing from sustained document work. For occasional use, pay attention to setup simplicity, standby behaviour and whether replacement supplies are easy to obtain. For frequent use, examine the paper tray capacity, supported duty information and the cost of the model-specific ink or toner. Do not infer a running cost from the printer’s purchase price.

5. Check automatic duplex printing

Automatic duplexing prints both sides without manually turning each sheet. Verify that the specification says automatic duplex, rather than merely offering a manual two-sided option. Also check whether duplexing is available for the paper sizes and media you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Decide whether scanning and copying belong in the same device

A multifunction printer can scan and copy in addition to printing, which is useful for signed forms, receipts and identification documents. If you only need occasional output and already have another scanning method, a print-only unit can reduce footprint and mechanical complexity. Confirm that the scanner or copier functions are present on the exact AirPrint-enabled model, not just on a higher trim in the same family.

7. Measure the real footprint

Record the printer’s dimensions with trays extended, not just its closed-body measurements. Leave room for loading paper, opening cartridge or toner access panels and retrieving pages. A model that fits on a shelf may be unusable if its input tray must remain open in front of a door or walkway.

8. Verify network setup options

Read the manufacturer’s setup instructions before buying. Some models use an on-device display, while others guide you through a companion setup process. The general AirPrint requirement remains the same—printer and iPad on the same Wi‑Fi network—but the way a printer joins that network varies by model. Apple’s Wi‑Fi setup guidance directs users to the printer documentation for these model-specific steps.

9. Calculate supply cost from the exact model

Write down the precise ink cartridge or toner identifiers and check their stated yields and local prices. A printer may be inexpensive to purchase yet expensive to run if its supplies are small or unusually costly. Conversely, a higher purchase price can make sense when the model’s consumable system better fits your volume. Match every cartridge, toner unit and drum to the exact printer model; do not rely on a retailer’s generic “compatible” label.

Comparison framework for your shortlist

Use this checklist while comparing two or more AirPrint models. It keeps the decision tied to measurable specifications instead of vague “best printer” claims.

Decision area What to verify on the exact model Why it affects an iPad buyer
AirPrint Exact model appears in Apple’s compatibility directory Establishes driverless iPad printing; Wi‑Fi alone does not
Network Wi‑Fi setup method, supported network bands or modes, and any wired option Determines whether the printer can join the network used by the iPad
Output Colour or monochrome, inkjet or laser, supported paper sizes Matches the printer to documents, photos and media you actually use
Two-sided printing Automatic duplex or manual two-sided workflow Changes paper handling and the number of steps for long documents
Functions Print-only or multifunction with scan and copy Prevents paying for hardware you will not use—or missing a needed function
Capacity Input tray, output area and any stated workload guidance Indicates how often you will reload paper during larger jobs
Supplies Exact cartridge or toner identifiers, published yields and local prices Provides a realistic view of recurring ownership cost
Size Body dimensions plus clearance for trays and access panels Ensures the printer can be operated safely in its intended location

How to set up wireless printing from an iPad

The broad process is consistent, but button names and network screens vary by printer. Use the printer’s manual for its Wi‑Fi enrollment steps and Apple’s general setup guidance for the iPad side.

  1. Prepare the printer. Remove packaging, install the specified ink or toner, load paper and turn the printer on. Complete any first-run alignment or calibration requested by the manufacturer.
  2. Join the printer to Wi‑Fi. Use the printer’s control panel or its documented setup method to select your home or office network and enter its password. If the printer offers a network report, print or save it so you can confirm the connected network name.
  3. Connect the iPad to that same network. On the iPad, open Settings > Wi‑Fi and select the identical network name. A guest network, isolated client network or different access point can prevent device discovery even when both devices are online.
  4. Open the item you want to print. Use an app that contains the document, image, email or web page. AirPrint is exposed through the app’s sharing or actions controls rather than through a separate printer-driver app.
  5. Open the print command. Tap Share or Actions, then choose Print. Apple notes that not every app supports printing; if the command is missing, consult that app’s help or user guide.
  6. Select the printer. Tap Select Printer or the equivalent field and choose the AirPrint-enabled printer shown on the network.
  7. Set available options. Choose the number of copies and any page range, paper or two-sided options the app and printer expose. Options differ by app, document type and model.
  8. Send the job. Tap Print. Keep the iPad and printer connected to the network until the job enters the printer’s queue.

Apple’s complete iPhone and iPad workflow is documented in Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone or iPad. That page also explains the app-support limitation and the network prerequisites.

What to do when the printer does not appear

Check the network before changing settings

Confirm the printer’s network report or display and compare its network name with the one shown under Settings > Wi‑Fi on the iPad. If the iPad is on a guest network and the printer is on the main network, discovery may be blocked. Move both devices to the same permitted network, then close and reopen the app’s print dialog.

Confirm that the connection type is supported

AirPrint requires a network connection. A printer connected only to a computer by Bluetooth is not the supported path described by Apple. The same applies to a printer plugged into an AirPort Base Station or AirPort Time Capsule USB port. Connect the printer directly to Wi‑Fi or use a supported wired network connection, then retry discovery.

Check the application

If Print is absent from Share or Actions, the app may not support printing. Apple recommends checking the app’s own documentation. Try opening the same file in an app known to expose a print command; this distinguishes an application limitation from a printer or network problem.

Recheck the exact model’s compatibility

Return to Apple’s AirPrint directory and search the complete model identifier. Do not substitute a family name or a visually similar variant. If the model is not listed, consult the manufacturer for current support information rather than installing an unverified driver package on the iPad.

Restart in a controlled order

When the network and app appear correct, close the print dialog, turn the printer off and on, and reconnect the iPad to Wi‑Fi. Wait for the printer to finish its startup sequence before reopening the document. This clears a stalled discovery session without changing the printer’s configuration.

Use the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions

Printer setup screens, firmware requirements and reset procedures differ. Apple’s general Wi‑Fi article intentionally directs readers to the manufacturer for exact model steps. Follow those instructions for network resets or firmware updates, and record the current Wi‑Fi password before resetting a printer that is already configured.

AirPrint limitations worth knowing before purchase

  • It is not available in every app. The app must expose a print command; an iPad cannot force printing from an app that omits it.
  • Options vary. Copy count, page selection, paper choice and duplex controls depend on what the app and printer report.
  • Compatibility is model-specific. A wireless product description or a nearby model in the same range does not establish AirPrint support.
  • Network design matters. The iPad and printer must be able to discover each other on the same Wi‑Fi network; being connected to the internet alone is not sufficient.
  • Model instructions still apply. AirPrint removes the need for iPad printer drivers, but it does not replace the printer’s own instructions for loading media, installing supplies or joining Wi‑Fi.

Buying checklist before you order

  1. Copy the complete printer model identifier from the listing.
  2. Find that identifier in Apple’s AirPrint compatibility directory.
  3. Confirm Wi‑Fi capability and read the manufacturer’s current network setup instructions.
  4. Choose colour or monochrome output based on the documents you actually print.
  5. Choose inkjet or laser according to your expected mix of images and text and your supply budget.
  6. Verify automatic duplexing if you need hands-off two-sided pages.
  7. Decide whether scanning and copying justify a multifunction model.
  8. Measure the operating footprint, including tray and access clearance.
  9. Record the exact ink or toner identifiers and check their local prices and stated yields.
  10. Check regional availability and warranty terms for the precise model, not just the series name.

How to judge “top picks” without a misleading ranking

A credible shortlist should identify the role each model is meant to fill—such as compact occasional printing, colour-heavy work, text-focused work or multifunction scanning—then show the evidence for that role. The role is useful only when the exact model has verified AirPrint support and its current specifications are available for your region.

Do not treat an online bestseller label, a low headline price or the word “wireless” as a performance test. Apple’s support pages establish the AirPrint workflow and compatibility process; they do not rank printers, publish print-speed benchmarks, set retail prices or verify cartridge costs. Those details must come from the manufacturer’s current documentation and the seller serving your market. If a listing combines several model numbers, obtain the precise identifier before comparing it.

For a household that prints a few pages at a time, easy Wi‑Fi setup, a small operating footprint and readily available supplies may matter more than a large paper tray. A home office producing long documents may value automatic duplexing, higher capacity and predictable toner or ink availability. Someone who scans signed forms should prioritize a confirmed multifunction model. These are selection priorities, not claims that one untested printer is universally superior.

Supplies, paper and long-term ownership

AirPrint compatibility does not tell you which paper or consumables to buy. Match paper size and media type to the printer’s manual. Match cartridges, toner, drums or maintenance items to the exact model identifier and region. Keep the original supply numbers with your purchase records so a later replacement does not rely on a similarly named printer.

When estimating cost, include the printer, replacement supplies, paper and any accessories required by the manufacturer. Use published yields as a planning figure rather than a guarantee for every page: coverage, colour density, paper type and cleaning cycles affect actual use. The Apple support material does not provide cartridge numbers, yields or supply endorsements, so those figures should come from the printer manufacturer or the retailer selling the precise model.

Bottom line for an iPad printer

Choose a Wi‑Fi printer whose exact model is listed for Apple AirPrint, connect it and the iPad to the same network, and print through the app’s Share or Actions menu. Then choose the hardware around your real workload: colour or monochrome, inkjet or laser, duplexing, scanning, capacity, footprint and recurring supply cost. Treat any “top pick” claim as conditional until the model’s current AirPrint status and regional specifications have been verified.
