AirPods Pro 3 are the best starting point for most callers who want an in-ear fit, while AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation suit people who prefer an open fit without silicone tips. Both list Voice Isolation and dual beamforming microphones. Those features do not prove either model will deliver the clearest transmitted voice in every app, device, and environment.
Which AirPods should you choose for calls?
- Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you want silicone tips, a more secure in-ear fit, and noise cancellation for what you hear. Apple lists Voice Isolation and dual beamforming microphones; RTINGS’ comparison highlights the Pro model’s fit and noise-cancellation advantages over AirPods 4. Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 specifications and RTINGS’ comparison support this as a fit-and-feature recommendation, not a universal microphone ranking.
- Choose AirPods 4 with ANC if you prefer an open fit and do not want silicone tips. Apple lists ANC, Voice Isolation, and dual beamforming microphones for this model. Apple’s AirPods 4 specifications distinguish the ANC model’s features.
AirPods Pro 3 were introduced in 2025; AirPods 4 were introduced in 2024. The available comparison does not settle which sounds best to the other caller across all networks, apps, and noise conditions.

What matters most for phone-call quality?
Voice Isolation affects the voice you send
On supported Apple devices and software, Voice Isolation can enhance your voice and reduce background noise, including wind, for the person listening to your call. Apple documents the feature for supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac setups. Availability depends on the device model and software version. See Apple’s Voice Isolation call guide.

Noise cancellation affects what you hear
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) reduces ambient sound reaching the wearer. That can make it easier to hear a conversation in a noisy place, but it is not itself a measure of how clearly your microphones transmit your voice to the other person. Treat listening comfort and outgoing call quality as separate buying questions.
Fit changes the experience
AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips to create an in-ear seal; AirPods 4 have an open fit without that seal. Prefer the Pro 3 if you want a more secure in-ear feel and isolation. Prefer AirPods 4 with ANC if silicone tips are uncomfortable or you want an open design. Comfort and stability are personal, so the better fit for you may matter more than a specification label.

Apple’s feature descriptions identify microphone and call-processing capabilities, but do not provide a comparative call-intelligibility score. RTINGS’ comparison, updated August 6, 2026, includes microphone and recording-quality sections and favors Pro 3 for fit and noise cancellation; it is one publisher’s comparison, not a ranking across every calling app and setting. How Apple describes call clarity
In a June 9, 2025 announcement about a feature update for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 2, Apple said that H2, beamforming microphones, and computational audio would provide “more natural vocal texture and clarity” across iPhone calls, FaceTime, and CallKit-enabled apps. That is Apple’s description of the announced update, not an independent measurement, and it should not be extended to every model or app. Apple’s June 2025 announcement.

Make the choice for your calling setup
- Decide whether you want silicone tips. If you value an in-ear seal and a secure fit, start with Pro 3; if you prefer an open design, consider AirPods 4 with ANC.
- Separate listening comfort from outgoing voice quality. ANC may help you hear the call; Voice Isolation is the call feature intended to help the other person hear you amid background noise.
- Check your device and software. Confirm that your iPhone, iPad, or Mac supports Voice Isolation with your AirPods, then try it in your regular calling app.
- Consider where you take calls. Wind, traffic, and other ambient noise can change results, as can app behavior and operating system. A feature list cannot predict every combination.
- Choose based on comfort as well as features. Try the fit if possible, especially if you have a strong preference about silicone tips or an open earbud design.
