Which AirPods should you get in 2026?
Use this quick decision rule:
- Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you want silicone-tip in-ear fit, the strongest published feature set, active noise cancellation (ANC), hearing features where supported, and the most flexibility for commuting or travel.
- Choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation if you want ANC but prefer the feel of Apple’s open-style in-ear design rather than a silicone seal.
- Choose AirPods Max 2 if you want over-ear headphones with a headband and full ear cups instead of earbuds.
- Choose AirPods 4 or AirPods 5 if you want a simpler in-ear option and do not need the Pro feature set. Apple lists multiple case configurations, so verify what is included.
- Consider AirPods Pro 2 when its regional price or availability makes it a better value than newer models, while remembering that it is an older generation in Apple’s current comparison.
There is no single “best” AirPods shape. Ear anatomy, tolerance for a sealed ear canal, phone ecosystem and intended listening environment matter more than a short specification list.

“Up to” figures are Apple’s manufacturer claims under stated test conditions. They are not guarantees for every listener: audio level, surroundings, firmware, selected listening mode and other settings affect runtime. Apple’s comparison does not establish independent sound quality, comfort, durability or long-term reliability.
Start with fit: open-style, silicone-tip or over-ear
Open-style in-ear AirPods
AirPods 4 and the AirPods 5 family are the choices to investigate if you prefer an in-ear bud that does not use a replaceable silicone tip to seal the canal. This style can feel more natural for people who dislike pressure or isolation, and it lets more environmental sound through. The trade-off is that an open fit generally cannot block outside noise as physically as a sealed ear tip. Because ear shapes differ, an open design may also feel less secure for some users during movement.
Silicone-tip in-ear AirPods
AirPods Pro 3 and Pro 2 use silicone tips. Pro 3 explicitly includes five sizes—XXS, XS, S, M and L—so you can tune the seal for comfort and noise control. A correct seal is important for bass response, ANC performance and Apple’s hearing-related features. If small or large tips still do not produce a stable, comfortable fit, a different model shape may be a better answer than simply increasing volume. Replacement Pro 3 ear tips are available according to Apple’s technical documentation.

Over-ear AirPods Max
AirPods Max and Max 2 place the drivers in ear cups connected by a headband. This avoids having anything inside the ear canal and can be preferable for desk work, flights or long sessions when you dislike earbuds. The cost is greater physical size and less pocketability. Choose Max 2 only if that over-ear form factor is what you want; it is not a direct substitute for the convenience of an in-ear charging case.
Noise cancellation and hearing features
How to interpret ANC claims
Apple lists ANC for AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Max 2. ANC performance depends on the model, ear fit, noise type and listening mode. Manufacturer “up to” comparisons describe Apple’s test method, not a guaranteed reduction for every person. Low, steady sounds such as aircraft or HVAC noise are different from voices, sudden sounds and high-frequency noise. Treat the published specification as a way to identify which models offer ANC, not as an independent ranking of real-world isolation.

Hearing Test and Hearing Aid
Apple says Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are supported on AirPods Pro 2 and later when the earbuds have current firmware and are paired with compatible Apple devices. Availability can depend on country or region, operating-system version and the supported setup. Apple describes the Hearing Aid feature as intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss and says it has FDA authorization. It is not a statement that every AirPods model provides hearing assistance, nor a replacement for personal medical advice.
Apple’s October 2024 hearing-health white paper defines the software feature this way: “The Apple Hearing Aid Feature (HAF) is a self-fitting, over-the-counter air-conduction hearing aid software feature that enables users to compensate for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.” Read the full document at Apple’s October 2024 AirPods Pro 2 hearing-health white paper.

Apple’s Pro 3 data sheet reports a 12-decibel Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) when the feature is used as directed. That number is specific to Apple’s data-sheet measurement and depends on correct fit and installed ear tips; it is not the attenuation every wearer will achieve. The feature also requires current firmware and compatible Apple devices.
Do not use AirPods as protective equipment for gunfire, fireworks, jackhammers or similar hazards. Apple’s September 2025 data sheet states: “The Hearing Protection feature is not suitable for protection against extremely loud impulse sounds, such as gunfire, fireworks, or jackhammers.” The complete document is available as a Pro 3 Hearing Protection Data Sheet.
Battery life, listening modes and charging cases
Apple reports the following maximum listening times in the current comparison:
Rank #3
- WORLD’S BEST IN-EAR ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2* so you can stay fully immersed in the moment.*
- BREAKTHROUGH AUDIO PERFORMANCE — Experience breathtaking, three-dimensional audio with AirPods Pro 3. A new acoustic architecture delivers transformed bass, detailed clarity so you can hear every instrument, and stunningly vivid vocals.
- HEART RATE SENSING — Built-in heart rate sensing lets you track your heart rate and calories burned for up to 50 different workout types.* With iPhone, you will have access to the Move ring, step count, and the new Workout Buddy,* powered by Apple Intelligence.*
- LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
- EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*
| Model | Mode attached to the figure | Apple’s published maximum | How to use the number |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3 | Active Noise Cancellation enabled | Up to 8 hours per charge | Useful for comparing the stated ANC mode; actual runtime changes with volume, environment and settings |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Active Noise Cancellation enabled | Up to 6 hours per charge | Not a like-for-like guarantee against other modes or products |
| AirPods Max 2 | Active Noise Cancellation enabled | Up to 20 hours | Over-ear listening time; usage conditions still affect the result |
The supplied Apple comparison details do not establish battery figures for AirPods 5, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods 4 without ANC, AirPods Pro 2 or the original AirPods Max. Do not infer those values from a similarly named model.
Case hardware matters as much as the earbud figure. Apple lists the AirPods Pro 3 case as USB-C MagSafe and says it can charge with a compatible Apple Watch charger. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case is a separate listing from AirPods 5, so read the product name carefully. For every model, confirm whether the retailer listing includes the case type and connector you need; the case variant can change charging convenience even when the earbuds look similar.
Compatibility and feature requirements
Basic Bluetooth listening and automatic pairing are not the only considerations. Some capabilities require all of the following:
- Supported AirPods hardware and the correct generation.
- Current firmware on the earbuds and case.
- A compatible Apple device and operating-system version.
- Compatible content for features such as listed lossless or ultra-low-latency audio.
- A supported country or language for region-limited hearing or software features.
Apple’s comparison notes that wired USB-C is required for the listed lossless and ultra-low-latency audio on compatible content. That does not mean every AirPods model, cable or source automatically provides those modes. Before buying for a specific workflow—gaming, studio monitoring, accessibility or travel—check the exact device and OS requirements in Apple’s current documentation.
How to choose: a step-by-step buying process
- Decide between earbuds and headphones. Pick an in-ear model if you want a small case and easy portability. Pick Max 2 if you specifically want ear cups and a headband.
- Choose your ear interface. Among in-ear models, decide whether you want open-style AirPods 4/5 or silicone-tip Pro earbuds. If you have struggled to keep open earbuds in place, prioritize the tip-based Pro design; if silicone pressure bothers you, start with the open-style models.
- Mark ANC as required or optional. If you commute, fly or work around continuous background noise, compare the ANC models. If you mostly listen in quiet rooms, a non-ANC model may satisfy you without paying for features you will not use.
- Check the feature you actually need. Hearing features, listed lossless or ultra-low-latency modes and Hearing Protection each have separate hardware, firmware, device and regional conditions. Verify those conditions before treating a feature as a buying reason.
- Compare battery figures under the same mode. Use Apple’s ANC-enabled figures for Pro 3, AirPods 4 ANC and Max 2 as a reference, and remember that “up to” is not a promise of your personal runtime.
- Inspect the case and charging method. Confirm USB-C, MagSafe or wireless-charging support in the exact listing. Do not assume that a model name without “Wireless Charging Case” includes that capability.
- Check the local price and return policy. Apple’s comparison text used here did not provide populated price fields, and retailer stock was not verified. Compare current regional prices, generation, case variant, warranty and return terms at checkout.
- Buy the tips or accessories that match the fit. For Pro 3, use the included sizes to establish a seal before judging ANC or comfort. Replacement tips are available if the originals wear out or are misplaced.
Model-by-model guidance
AirPods Pro 3: the premium in-ear choice
Pro 3 is the logical starting point when you want silicone-tip fit, ANC, the newest Pro feature set in Apple’s listed lineup and the broadest set of hearing-related capabilities described in the documentation. Its five tip sizes make fit a deliberate part of setup rather than an afterthought. The case’s USB-C MagSafe design and Apple Watch charging support add flexibility if you already use compatible chargers.
Rank #4
- Automatically on, automatically connected
- Easy setup for all your Apple devices
- Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
- Double-tap to play or skip forward
- New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices
Choose it when those benefits solve a real problem—noise during travel, a more secure seal, hearing features that are available for your region and devices, or the need to tune fit. Do not choose it solely because it is the newest name: its value depends on the local price and whether you will use the Pro features.
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation: ANC without silicone tips
This model is the clearest alternative for someone who wants ANC but prefers an open-style in-ear fit. Apple lists up to six hours per charge with ANC enabled. The design may be more comfortable for users who dislike canal seals, although the fit can be more dependent on individual ear shape. Confirm the charging-case variant and connector before purchase.
AirPods 4: the simpler open-style option
AirPods 4 suit buyers who want the open-style form factor and do not require the ANC version’s feature set. The supplied comparison details do not establish a battery figure for this model, so use the exact current product page rather than borrowing the ANC model’s number.
AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case
Apple lists both AirPods 5 and a version explicitly named AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. That naming difference is important: the case configuration is part of the buying decision. Compare the listings carefully if wireless charging is a requirement, and confirm the included accessories, connector and generation at checkout.
AirPods Pro 2: an older Pro option
Pro 2 remains in Apple’s comparison and supports Hearing Test and Hearing Aid when paired with the required firmware and compatible Apple hardware. It can be worth considering if current regional pricing makes it attractive, but the documents used here do not provide a direct price or independent performance comparison with Pro 3. Treat it as an established Pro platform, not as proof that it is the best value everywhere.
Best Value
- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
AirPods Max 2: choose the over-ear route
Max 2 is for people who specifically want over-ear headphones. Apple reports up to 20 hours with ANC enabled. That figure is not directly comparable to an earbud’s per-charge claim because the product, battery system and use pattern are different. Max 2 makes sense for stationary listening, travel and users who do not want anything inserted in the ear canal.
Original AirPods Max
The original AirPods Max is still listed by Apple, but the supplied comparison details do not establish a current battery figure, connector specification or availability statement for it. If a retailer offers it, verify the generation, warranty and charging hardware rather than assuming it matches Max 2.
Which AirPods fit common use cases?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Reason and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Premium in-ear features and a sealed fit | AirPods Pro 3 | Silicone tips, ANC, hearing-related features where supported and the most detailed fit options; verify regional requirements and price |
| ANC without silicone tips | AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Open-style in-ear design with Apple’s stated ANC battery figure; individual ear shape determines stability |
| Over-ear comfort and isolation from having earbuds in the canal | AirPods Max 2 | Headband and ear cups with up to 20 hours ANC-enabled listening; less compact than earbuds |
| Simple open-style earbuds | AirPods 4 or AirPods 5 | Fewer stated Pro features; confirm the exact case and available specifications |
| Potential lower-cost entry to Pro features | AirPods Pro 2 | Older generation that supports hearing features under Apple’s conditions; current price and stock vary by region |
What the published specifications do not tell you
Apple’s documents are authoritative for Apple’s stated compatibility, feature definitions and laboratory-style product figures. They do not establish how each model sounds to you, whether a particular ear shape will stay secure, how comfortable the headband feels after several hours, how durable a charging case will be in daily use or which model has the best microphone in every environment. Those are personal or independently measured questions.
Prices and retailer stock were not verified in the material used here. A model can be the better purchase in one country and a poor value in another because discounts, taxes, warranty terms and availability differ. Compare like-for-like generations and cases before deciding that one model is cheaper.
Final buying checklist
- Have you chosen in-ear or over-ear before comparing features?
- If in-ear, do you want open-style buds or silicone tips?
- Is ANC essential, and will you use it often enough to justify the model?
- Does the exact model support the hearing or low-latency feature you need?
- Are your Apple device, OS, firmware, language and region supported?
- Did you compare battery figures using the same listening mode?
- Does the case have the connector or wireless-charging method you expect?
- Are the generation, warranty, return policy and local price clear?
These recommendations are based on Apple’s published specifications and compatibility documents available in October 2026, not hands-on testing. For most in-ear buyers, compare AirPods Pro 3 with AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation; choose Max 2 only when over-ear headphones are your deliberate preference.
