Best Air Purifiers for PM2.5 and Wildfire Smoke in Bedrooms

For a bedroom affected by wildfire smoke, choose a portable air cleaner by its smoke CADR, not by “true HEPA” wording alone. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. For a 12×12-foot bedroom (144 square feet), that means at least 96 cfm; a higher CADR cleans the room faster. Keep windows and doors closed when safe, place the unit where air can circulate freely, and run it continuously while smoke is entering the home.

Among the documented models below, the Blueair Pure 211 has the largest published capacity (350 cfm smoke CADR and 350 cfm PM2.5 CADR), while the Coway Airmega 100 (124 cfm smoke CADR, 109 cfm PM2.5 CADR) is a better match for a smaller room. The LEVOIT LAP-C511S-WUS appears in ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient directory, but its CADR and price were not exposed in the available listing, so confirm those figures before buying.

Model Published smoke CADR Published PM2.5 CADR Best fit What to verify
Blueair Pure 211 350 cfm 350 cfm Large bedrooms, open bedroom suites, or severe-smoke conditions where fast cleaning matters Current U.S. price, low-speed noise and replacement-filter availability
Coway Airmega 100 124 cfm 109 cfm Small to medium bedrooms when 124 cfm meets the two-thirds room-area rule Current U.S. price, sleeping noise and replacement-filter cost
LEVOIT LAP-C511S-WUS Not stated in the available ENERGY STAR listing Not stated in the available ENERGY STAR listing Potentially efficient option, but it cannot be sized confidently without a smoke CADR Exact U.S. listing, smoke CADR, PM2.5 CADR, price and filter supply

CADR figures above come from ENERGY STAR/U.S. EPA data for 2025, except the LEVOIT directory entry, which was accessed in 2026. CADR is reported in cubic feet per minute (cfm). Do not treat a model as a wildfire-smoke recommendation until its smoke CADR is compared with your room area.

How much CADR does your bedroom need?

Calculate the floor area in square feet, then multiply by two-thirds. The result is the EPA’s minimum smoke CADR target:

minimum smoke CADR = bedroom length × bedroom width × 2/3

Bedroom dimensions Floor area EPA minimum smoke CADR
10 × 10 ft 100 sq ft At least 67 cfm
10 × 12 ft 120 sq ft At least 80 cfm
12 × 12 ft 144 sq ft At least 96 cfm
12 × 15 ft 180 sq ft At least 120 cfm
15 × 20 ft 300 sq ft At least 200 cfm

These are minimums, not guarantees of a particular indoor concentration. A unit rated well above the target can clean faster and may let you use a quieter speed. Account for connected spaces: if the bedroom door is normally open to a hallway or dressing area, sizing only the bedroom can understate the air volume being treated.

Why smoke CADR is the useful number

CADR combines how much air a cleaner moves with how effectively its filter removes a test particle. ENERGY STAR explains that a higher CADR filters room air more quickly and can serve a larger area. For wildfire smoke, use the manufacturer’s or ENERGY STAR’s smoke CADR when available.

Tobacco-smoke CADR is a practical proxy for PM2.5-sized particles because the test aerosol is in the fine-particle range relevant to smoke. A separate PM2.5 CADR is useful when published, but do not substitute a much larger claimed “room size” for a measured CADR.

Which documented models make sense?

Blueair Pure 211: the high-capacity choice

The Blueair Pure 211 is listed with a 350 cfm smoke CADR and a 350 cfm PM2.5 CADR in ENERGY STAR/U.S. EPA qualified-model data for 2025. That is more than three times the 96 cfm minimum for a 12×12 bedroom and gives substantial capacity for a larger room, an attached sleeping area, or periods when smoke levels are high.

Capacity is not the same as suitability for every sleeper. Before purchasing, check the current U.S. specification for low-speed sound, power use, filter price and stock. A large unit operated at a low setting may be comfortable at night, but the actual sound level depends on the selected speed and the room.

Coway Airmega 100: a smaller-room match

The Coway Airmega 100 has a published 124 cfm smoke CADR and 109 cfm PM2.5 CADR in 2025 ENERGY STAR/U.S. EPA data. Its smoke rating exceeds the 96 cfm minimum for a 12×12 bedroom, so it fits that room on the EPA sizing rule. It also clears the minimum for a 10×12 room (80 cfm).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 12×15 room, the target is 120 cfm, leaving only a small margin above the 124 cfm smoke rating. In a larger or connected space, choose a higher-capacity cleaner or use more than one unit rather than relying on the nominal room-size label. Confirm sleep-mode noise and recurring filter cost for the exact U.S. version.

LEVOIT LAP-C511S-WUS: verify before ranking it

The LEVOIT LAP-C511S-WUS appears in ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient room-air-cleaner directory accessed in 2026. The available listing did not expose a smoke CADR, PM2.5 CADR or price. Efficiency recognition alone does not establish that it meets the wildfire-smoke sizing rule. Obtain the exact U.S. model’s smoke CADR before comparing it with the two documented options.

What else should you compare?

Once a model meets the CADR target, compare the factors that affect whether you will actually run it:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Low-speed noise: Look for a measured or manufacturer-stated sound level at the speed you will use for sleeping. A powerful unit that is too loud may be left off.
  • Ozone emissions: Prefer a unit certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), especially if it uses an ionizer, electrostatic stage or other active technology. CARB certification addresses ozone emissions; it does not replace CADR sizing.
  • Efficiency: ENERGY STAR qualification indicates attention to energy performance and standardized reporting. It does not mean the unit has the highest smoke CADR.
  • Filter cost and supply: Check the current U.S. replacement filter price and whether filters are readily available. A cleaner is only useful during a long smoke season if replacement media can be obtained.
  • Sensors and controls: A PM2.5 display, automatic mode, timer or app can make operation easier, but these features do not compensate for an undersized filter.
  • Airflow clearance: Verify that the intake and outlet can remain unobstructed in the intended bedroom location.

Current U.S. list prices and replacement-filter prices were not captured for these models. Check the manufacturer’s U.S. product page and a current retailer listing immediately before purchase; do not rely on an old price or a listing for a different regional variant.

How to set up a cleaner-air bedroom

EPA identifies “a bedroom with an attached bathroom” as a good choice for a cleaner-air room because it can be isolated from the rest of the home. Use the following setup when outdoor smoke is present:

  1. Choose the room. Select the bedroom where occupants spend the most time, ideally one with an attached bathroom. Keep the door closed as much as practical to reduce air exchange with smokier areas.
  2. Close windows and exterior doors when safe. Turn off or limit ventilation that brings outdoor smoke inside, while following any building, heating or safety requirements. Do not compromise required combustion-air or emergency egress arrangements.
  3. Place the cleaner in open space. Leave the intake and outlet clear of walls, curtains, bedding and furniture. Do not push it under a desk or inside a closet.
  4. Start at a high speed. Run the unit at a high setting after smoke enters or when outdoor conditions worsen. Once particle levels fall, reduce speed only if the cleaner continues operating and the room remains comfortable.
  5. Run it continuously during intrusion. Keeping the unit on prevents particles from accumulating again while smoke is entering through unavoidable leaks.
  6. Keep the source out. Do not burn candles, incense or tobacco in the room. Cooking particles and other indoor sources add to the particle load a cleaner must remove.

A portable air cleaner reduces airborne particles but cannot remove every pollutant in wildfire smoke. Source control, closed openings and filtration work together; filtration is not a substitute for evacuation orders or other public-health guidance.

Will a HEPA purifier remove PM2.5?

A properly sized HEPA-equipped cleaner can capture PM2.5 particles, but “HEPA” describes filter performance rather than how quickly the room is cleaned. A small HEPA unit with inadequate airflow can deliver less clean air than a larger unit with a higher smoke CADR. For this reason, compare smoke or tobacco-smoke CADR first, then examine the filter construction.

PM2.5 is a particle-size category, not a single chemical. Wildfire smoke also contains gases and vapors that a particle filter may not remove. Activated-carbon stages can address some odors and gases, but their capacity and performance vary and are not represented by smoke CADR. Treat a particle cleaner as one layer of protection, not a complete wildfire-smoke scrubber.

Do you need a CARB-certified air purifier?

CARB certification is useful when a cleaner has an ionizer or another technology that could emit ozone. The certification is intended to limit ozone emissions from air-cleaning devices sold in California. It does not certify that a unit has enough smoke CADR for your bedroom, and it does not guarantee removal of smoke gases.

For a bedroom, a sensible order of checks is:

  1. Confirm the smoke CADR meets at least two-thirds of the room area.
  2. Check whether the exact model is CARB-certified or otherwise has documented ozone limits.
  3. Look at ENERGY STAR status and power consumption if the unit will run continuously.
  4. Confirm low-speed noise, filter availability and the controls you will use at night.

Should you run the purifier all night?

Yes—during a smoke event, continuous operation is generally more effective than running a purifier only before bed. Set it to a speed that you can tolerate for sleep, keep the bedroom closed as safely as possible, and increase the speed when smoke intrusion or indoor particle readings rise. If the unit has an automatic mode, verify that its sensor responds to fine particles; an odor sensor alone may not track PM2.5.

Keep the cleaner on a stable, dry surface and maintain the clearances in its manual. Do not cover it with clothing or bedding, and do not place it where a child or pet can pull it over. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning the prefilter and changing the main filter.

Lower-cost option: a Corsi-Rosenthal box

When a commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable, a box fan with MERV-13 filters can provide substantial particle removal. In 2021 testing, the EPA measured the following wildfire-smoke CADR values:

DIY configuration Wildfire-smoke CADR in EPA testing
Box fan with one 1-inch MERV-13 filter 111 ± 1 cfm
Box fan with a 4-inch MERV-13 filter and cardboard shroud 248 ± 15 cfm
Four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box 401 ± 31 cfm

These are laboratory results for the tested configurations, not a guarantee for every fan, filter, seal or assembly. The single-filter result is above the 96 cfm minimum for a 12×12 bedroom; the higher-capacity designs provide more margin for larger rooms.

Assembly and operation

  1. Use a box fan in good condition and MERV-13 filters that match the fan’s intake dimensions.
  2. Orient each filter so its airflow arrow points toward the fan. For a four-filter design, join the filters into a cube and place the fan on top, exhausting upward.
  3. Seal gaps between filters and around the fan with a cardboard shroud or suitable tape so air does not bypass the filter media.
  4. Place the assembly on a stable, level surface with the intake sides unobstructed.
  5. Start at a high speed during smoke intrusion, then reduce speed for sleep if the room remains adequately filtered.
  6. Inspect the filters during the event. Replace them when visibly loaded, damaged or difficult to breathe through, and follow the fan and filter makers’ safety instructions.

Unlike a purpose-built room cleaner, a DIY fan assembly may lack a sealed housing, particle sensor, filter-change indicator and a published sleep-noise rating. Weigh those trade-offs against its higher CADR per dollar and local availability.

Troubleshooting common bedroom problems

The room still smells smoky

Odor can persist even after PM2.5 falls because gases and particles have settled on fabrics and surfaces. Check that windows, doors and ventilation paths are closed as safely as possible, that the cleaner is running continuously, and that its intake and outlet are not blocked. Do not assume a stronger fragrance or an ionizer solves the problem; verify particle performance with CADR and, if available, a PM2.5 monitor.

The purifier is too loud

Use the highest tolerable speed while smoke is entering, then lower it for sleep. If the lower setting cannot keep up, use a model with a higher smoke CADR so it can deliver the required clean air at a quieter setting, or add a second cleaner. Check the manufacturer’s sound specification for the exact speed rather than relying on a general “quiet” label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Indoor PM2.5 remains high

Look for open windows, bathroom fans, range-hood exhaust, door gaps or another indoor source. Confirm the filter is installed in the correct direction and has not reached its replacement point. A purifier cannot compensate indefinitely for a large smoke leak or for a room that is much larger than the unit’s CADR rating.

The filter is hard to find

Before buying, identify the exact replacement part number and confirm current U.S. stock. Avoid assuming that a similarly named model uses the same filter. If supply is uncertain during an active smoke season, a model with widely available replacement media or a properly built MERV-13 fan assembly may be more practical.

A simple buying decision

  1. Measure the bedroom. Multiply length by width and calculate two-thirds of the result.
  2. Reject undersized models. Use the smoke CADR, or tobacco-smoke CADR when that is the standardized figure available.
  3. Choose extra capacity when conditions demand it. Large or connected rooms, severe smoke, and a preference for quiet operation all favor a higher CADR.
  4. Screen for ozone. Prefer CARB-certified equipment when active technologies could generate ozone.
  5. Check livability. Compare low-speed noise, energy use, controls, filter cost and supply.
  6. Set it up correctly. Isolate the bedroom, keep airflow clear and run the cleaner continuously during smoke intrusion.

For a typical 12×12 bedroom, the 96 cfm minimum makes the Coway Airmega 100 a documented fit and leaves the Blueair Pure 211 with considerably more capacity. For larger rooms or faster cleanup, the Blueair’s 350 cfm rating is the stronger documented option. The LEVOIT model should remain unranked until its exact smoke CADR is confirmed.
