Replacing an installed vehicle refrigerant line
This is a factory-style hose or hose assembly fitted to one position in one vehicle’s A/C circuit. The part must match the vehicle, line position, and connection type. A complete assembly may include an integrated component, such as an orifice tube, that is not interchangeable with a plain hose.
Building or repairing a line from barrier hose
Here you buy hose by the foot or in a spool and add couplings. This suits custom runs or repairs where you already know the fitting and diameter. Ratings and couplings must be compatible with each other, and the assembled result must be checked against the hose manufacturer’s coupling guidance.

Connecting recharge or service equipment
A charging hose links a gauge set or recharge tool to the vehicle’s service port. It is a tool accessory, not part of the car. Its fittings must match your equipment and the vehicle’s service connections.

Gates states that the hose is manufactured to SAE J3062 and that hose assemblies made with hose and coupling meet SAE J2064. Keep these separate: the J3062 claim concerns the hose, and the J2064 claim concerns the completed assembly.
FMSI automotive barrier A/C hose (2025 catalog)
FMSI lists this barrier hose as SAE J2064 and compatible with R12, R134a, R1234yf, and hydrocarbon refrigerants. The catalog gives 500 PSI working pressure and 2,900 PSI burst pressure for the product. The #6 size has a 5/16-inch inside diameter and is offered in 5-foot and 12-foot lengths.

Charging hoses are the most common under-$50 item, but they serve a different purpose from an installed line.

The displayed price was $46.45 when checked in 2026. Confirm that the fittings match your recharge equipment, and check the current price and shipping before buying. This is a service hose; it is not a replacement for a vehicle refrigerant line.

A/C Pro ACP-400 long-length recharge hose and gauge
A/C Pro’s manufacturer announcement describes ACP-400 as a long-length recharge hose and gauge and says the recharge job can be completed “often for less than $40.00 and in under ten minutes.” That is the manufacturer’s promotional wording. It is not an independent test result, and it does not establish a current price. Like the Mastercool hose, it is a service product, not a line replacement.
Checklist before you buy
Use these checks regardless of which example you consider.
- Vehicle line replacement: record the exact year, make, model, engine, and the line’s position (for example, liquid line) before comparing listings. Check that the assembly includes any integrated component you need, such as an orifice tube.
- Refrigerant: confirm the refrigerant your system uses, usually shown on the under-hood label, and check that the hose lists compatibility with it.
- Couplings and fittings: match connection type and size. For barrier hose, use the manufacturer’s recommended couplings; Gates recommends PolarSeal couplings for its PolarSeal II hose.
- Charging equipment: match fitting size, length, and whether shut-off valves are needed for your gauge set or recharge tool.
- Price: compare total cost including shipping, and check the listing date, because the prices above are retailer or manufacturer figures from 2026 that may change.
- Safety: in the United States, handling refrigerant generally requires EPA Section 608 certification. Recharging a system is also regulated in many other countries, so confirm local rules before you work on the system.
