Short answer: Start with Runway if you need several current models and reference-driven controls in one professional workflow. Choose Luma Ray3 when preserving one character across many shots is the main problem. Consider Kling O3 for motion-heavy work or 4K output, and Veo 3.1 when generated dialogue, ambience, or music must be part of the clip.
No generator guarantees a perfectly identical face, costume, lighting setup, or prop in every generation. Consistency comes from a controlled reference image, repeatable prompts, keyframes or video-to-video passes, and selecting only usable takes. The comparison below focuses on those controls rather than on a single “best” model score; no independent cross-platform benchmark is available.

Runway’s catalogue places Gen-4.5, Veo 3.1, and Kling O3 together, which is useful when you want to test the same reference package across models without rebuilding your project elsewhere. Luma is more focused on a continuity-first workflow. Kling and Veo are strong candidates for particular shot requirements, but their identity stability should be checked with your own character and camera moves.

- Identity: facial proportions, hairline, skin tone, age, body shape, and distinctive marks remain recognizable.
- Wardrobe and props: colors, fabrics, logos, jewelry, eyewear, weapons, and other story-critical objects stay fixed unless the script calls for a change.
- Scene geography: the same room, street, vehicle, or landscape keeps its layout, time of day, weather, and light direction.
- Motion and camera: screen direction, eyelines, camera height, lens feel, and the path of a moving subject agree from shot to shot.
- Temporal continuity: a shot extension begins where the previous clip ends instead of resetting the pose, lighting, or background.
A model can satisfy one dimension while failing another. A face may remain stable while clothing changes; a room may match while the actor’s hands mutate. Evaluate each dimension with a short test sequence before committing to a long production.
Runway: the broadest professional starting point
Why it is a strong default
Runway’s official model catalogue lists Gen-4.5, Veo 3.1, and Kling O3 in one platform. That gives a production team a practical way to compare model behavior while keeping references, prompts, and generated assets in the same project environment. Runway documents both image-to-video and text-to-video workflows, image references, and multishot prompting. Those controls are more useful for continuity than a text-only prompt because they give the model a visual anchor and a way to describe several planned shots.
How to use it for a recurring character
- Create a clean master image of the character with a neutral expression, even lighting, and the full wardrobe visible. Keep this file unchanged and label it as the project’s identity reference.
- Use the image-to-video workflow when the first shot should preserve that exact appearance. Describe movement and camera direction in the prompt; do not rewrite the character’s physical description with contradictory details.
- For a sequence, use multishot prompting to specify shot order, framing, action, and transitions. State which details must remain unchanged in every shot, such as the blue wool coat, scar over the left eyebrow, and brass watch.
- When a later shot drifts, regenerate from the same reference instead of adding a new portrait. If the available model supports video-to-video or keyframes in your account, use the last approved frame as the next visual anchor.
- Test the exact camera moves you need. A front-facing close-up may hold identity while a fast profile pan, hand interaction, or crowded background exposes weaknesses.
Where Runway fits best
Choose Runway when you value model choice, reference-driven control, and an editor-oriented workflow more than a single specialized feature. It is also a sensible benchmark for a team that wants to test Gen-4.5 against Kling O3 or Veo 3.1 using the same character package. The catalogue’s capabilities are model-specific, so check the selected model’s current documentation before assuming that a control available for one model appears in another.
Luma Dream Machine and Ray3: continuity-first creation
The defining feature
Luma Ray3 explicitly advertises character reference, keyframes, video-to-video, HDR, and continuity. Its product statement is unusually direct: “Create consistent characters across shots with a single reference image.” Luma’s Dream Machine page also says users can bring their own image, style, and character references to create unique, consistent characters from one image. For a creator whose main concern is keeping one person recognizable through a storyboard, this focused workflow can reduce setup time.
A practical Ray3 sequence
- Prepare one reference image that clearly shows the face, hair, clothing silhouette, and any signature prop. Avoid a reference with heavy motion blur, extreme color grading, or an occluded face.
- Use the character-reference control for the establishing shot and write a compact identity block: age range, hairstyle, wardrobe, accessories, and immutable marks. Keep that block identical in later prompts.
- Use keyframes when the beginning and end poses matter. A first keyframe can establish the approved appearance; a later keyframe can guide where the action ends without asking the model to invent the entire transition.
- Use video-to-video when you need to preserve timing or choreography from a rough animatic. This is often more reliable than asking text-to-video to reproduce a complex movement from scratch.
- Inspect HDR output on the display type used by your audience. High dynamic range can make lighting continuity look different after conversion to a standard-dynamic-range delivery file.
Best use case and limitation
Luma is a strong candidate for fast visual exploration around a single recurring character. The supplied product material does not state current plan prices, frame-rate limits, or guaranteed identity metrics, so budget and delivery decisions require checking the plan and export settings you will actually use.

Kling O3: motion and 4K as decision factors
Runway’s catalogue lists Kling O3 with text, image, and video-to-video generation, image references, multishot prompts, optional audio, and a 4K variant. Those features make it worth testing when a sequence includes athletic movement, vehicle motion, or a final delivery that benefits from higher resolution.
Testing identity during complex movement
- Start with an image reference and a short, simple action such as turning toward camera. Confirm that the face and wardrobe survive before adding speed.
- Increase motion in stages: walking, running, interaction with a prop, then camera movement. Save the best clip at each stage so you can identify which change causes drift.
- For a 4K deliverable, compare a native 4K generation with an upscaled lower-resolution version using the same frame. Higher pixel count does not automatically mean better identity retention.
- Use multishot prompts only after a single shot works. If all shots fail at once, you cannot tell whether the problem is identity, action, or the transition between shots.
Kling O3 should be treated as a candidate rather than an automatic winner. Compare its face, costume, and prop stability on the exact recurring character you plan to publish. Its optional audio can be useful for rough cuts, but confirm whether the generated track is acceptable for final dialogue and mixing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Google Veo 3.1: when sound is part of the generation brief
Runway’s catalogue describes Veo 3.1 as high-quality video generation with audio and speech. That makes it relevant when a clip needs generated dialogue, ambience, or music rather than silent pictures that will be scored later.
Questions to answer before choosing it
- Is Veo 3.1 available in your country and in the account tier you intend to purchase?
- Does the current host expose the reference-image, extension, or editing controls your continuity plan requires?
- Are speech duration, language, voice control, and audio export options adequate for the scene?
- Can you regenerate the picture without losing an approved line, or regenerate audio separately when a visual take is good but the dialogue is wrong?
Google access, regional availability, and plan limits change quickly. Verify those details immediately before production. If identity continuity is more important than native sound, test Veo 3.1 against a reference-driven workflow in Runway or Luma rather than assuming the audio feature predicts better character retention.
Capability comparison for a real production brief
| Requirement | Runway catalogue | Luma Ray3 | Kling O3 | Veo 3.1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-image character reference | Documented image references | Explicitly advertised | Documented image references | Host-dependent; verify current controls |
| Keyframes | Model/workflow dependent; not stated for every listed model | Documented | Not stated in the supplied material | Not stated in the supplied material |
| Video-to-video | Documented for supported workflows/models | Documented | Documented | Not stated in the supplied material |
| Multishot prompting | Documented | Not stated in the supplied material | Documented | Not stated in the supplied material |

| 4K option | Kling O3 4K listed | Not stated | 4K variant listed | Not stated |
“Not stated” means the supplied canonical material does not establish that capability for that product; it is not evidence that the feature is impossible. Interfaces and model versions change, so confirm the current model page before signing a project around an unlisted control.

A repeatable workflow for consistent characters and scenes
1. Lock a character bible before generating video
Make a one-page specification with the character’s name, age range, body proportions, hair, eye color, skin tone, wardrobe layers, footwear, accessories, scars or tattoos, and forbidden changes. Add three to six reference images: a neutral portrait, three-quarter view, profile, full body, and any prop that must recur. Keep filenames and versions stable so collaborators do not accidentally replace the approved reference.
2. Build a scene bible
Record location geometry, time of day, weather, light direction, color palette, and the camera’s screen direction. Note which objects are fixed in the background. A model cannot infer that a doorway must remain on screen left unless the prompt or reference makes that relationship explicit.
3. Generate a low-cost identity test
Use a short clip and a simple action. Check the eyes, jawline, hairline, clothing seams, hands, and signature prop frame by frame. Do not spend credits on a long multishot sequence until this test passes.
4. Add motion and camera complexity gradually
Change one variable at a time: first subject movement, then camera movement, then background activity. This isolates failures and produces reusable prompts. Keep the approved seed, reference, and prompt version with every exported clip if the platform exposes those controls.
5. Anchor transitions with keyframes or approved frames
When available, use keyframes to define the start and end state of a shot. For a continuation, feed the last approved frame or clip into video-to-video rather than beginning from a blank text prompt. State the action that continues across the cut, such as “the left hand remains on the railing while the camera tracks right.”

6. Use multishot prompts as a plan, not a repair tool
Describe each shot with duration, framing, lens perspective, action, and transition. Keep identity rules outside the shot-specific action so they are not accidentally changed from one shot to the next. If the model fails, split the sequence into individual shots and assemble them in an editor.
7. Review at delivery resolution
A face can look stable in a small preview and fail when viewed full size. Review the intended frame rate, aspect ratio, HDR or standard-dynamic-range conversion, subtitle area, and audio mix. Reject takes with subtle wardrobe or prop drift even if the first and last frames look acceptable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the published prices really tell you
Runway’s 2026 catalogue gives example usage rates of $0.28 per second for Gen-4.5 and $0.13 per second for Kling O3 4K. These are example per-second rates shown by Runway, not a universal cost for every plan, resolution, or regeneration. Luma and Veo 3.1 prices are not stated in the supplied material.
Budget for usable seconds, not generated seconds. If a five-second shot takes six attempts, the production consumed 30 generated seconds before editing, upscaling, or audio work. Add a continuity-test allowance for profile views, hands, fast motion, and transitions; those are common places where a seemingly cheap first take becomes expensive through retries. Also check whether a plan includes the model, permits commercial use, and imposes monthly credits or export limits.

The face changes between shots
Reuse the same approved reference and identity block. Simplify the action, reduce extreme angles, and anchor the continuation with a keyframe or last approved frame. If the model still drifts, cut between closer shots or use video-to-video from a performance that already has the correct face.

Clothing or accessories mutate
Describe layers and distinctive objects explicitly, and include a full-body reference. Avoid introducing a new color palette in the action prompt. Generate the wardrobe-critical shot separately, then use that approved frame as the reference for the next shot.
Hands and props fail during interaction
Reduce the number of simultaneous actions. Test the hand movement without a moving camera, then add the camera move. For a prop that drives the story, create a close-up insert rather than forcing a wide shot to show detailed contact.
The location resets after a cut
Use a scene reference, repeat fixed geography, and specify the direction of travel. Keyframes or video-to-video are preferable to a new text-only generation for a continuation. If the background remains unstable, frame the subject against a simpler area and add environmental coverage as separate shots.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAudio is good but the picture is unusable
Separate picture and sound decisions when the platform allows it. Keep the approved audio take, regenerate the visual with the same dialogue timing, and replace the guide track during editing. Do not assume that a model advertised with audio will provide the voice control or clean stems your final mix requires.
The sequence looks consistent in previews but not in the final export
Check resolution, frame-rate conversion, HDR handling, cropping, and compression. Inspect the final export on the target device. A color-management mismatch can make identical lighting appear inconsistent even when the generated frames are similar.
Rights, access, and production checks
- Confirm commercial-use terms for the exact plan and model, not just the platform’s general terms.
- Verify that reference images contain people, logos, locations, or artwork you are authorized to use.
- Check regional availability, model retirement dates, credit expiration, and export restrictions immediately before purchase.
- Record the model name and version used for each approved shot; model updates can alter continuity behavior.
- Keep original references, prompts, generated clips, and edit decisions in a versioned project folder so a replacement shot can be made without rebuilding the sequence.
- Obtain consent and follow applicable law when generating a recognizable person’s likeness or synthetic speech.
