For a child who needs broad, supervised tutoring, Khanmigo is the strongest documented choice. Khan Academy describes moderation, daily interaction limits and parent visibility into chats and activities. For students aged 13 and older using a managed school account, Microsoft Study and Learn adds administrator age controls and content-safety filtering. Photomath is the most useful specialist for worked mathematics, but families should understand its 13+ terms and camera-image processing before allowing use. No AI homework tool is error-free or universally safe; an adult or teacher should remain part of the learning loop.

What makes an AI homework helper safe for children?

“Safe” should mean more than a polite interface. A useful child-safety review checks who is eligible to use the service, who can see activity, what happens when a child asks for harmful or inappropriate content, what data leaves the device, whether the system teaches reasoning or simply supplies answers, and whether a school or parent can turn features off.

The services below document different parts of that safety model. Khanmigo is the clearest example of parent-mediated supervision. Microsoft Study and Learn is designed around school administration and Microsoft 365 Education accounts. Photomath limits its scope to mathematics and offers worked steps, but its camera and privacy terms deserve a separate review. Socratic can help locate learning resources, yet the cited Google documentation does not establish an equivalent child-specific safety program.

Khanmigo Under-18 learners need a parent or guardian sign-up. The cited parent/learner guidance requires an adult account and a U.S. billing address. Parents or guardians can see chat history and activities; teachers and school administrators may also have visibility where applicable. Moderation technology, daily interaction limits and review of questionable content for safety and educational value. Khan Academy says images shared with Khanmigo are not stored under its privacy policies. Broad curriculum-connected tutoring, including mathematics, humanities, coding and social studies; emphasizes guided learning. Current pricing and regional availability are not stated here and are subject to change.
Microsoft Study and Learn Agent 13+; available to Education users with an A1, A3 or A5 Microsoft 365 Education license. K–12 administrators set age groups; under-13 students are not granted access. School or district administrators control tenant settings, age groups and access. Microsoft Entra age enforcement, filters for self-harm, sexual content, violence and hate speech, and refusal of requests that violate Microsoft Responsible AI standards. Use is tied to the school’s Microsoft 365 environment; the school should explain its retention and monitoring settings. Study support for middle-school, high-school, higher-education and adult learners; can coach research and explanations. Requires an eligible Education license; availability depends on the institution and region.
Microsoft Copilot for young people 13+ in supported regions; local rules may set a higher minimum. Parents can use Microsoft Family Safety or device controls to block access, set time limits or restrict features. Safety filters, age-appropriate handling of sensitive topics and reminders that AI responses can be wrong. Microsoft says under-18 chats are not used to train AI models on the cited young-people page; human review may still occur for safety, legal, product-improvement or troubleshooting reasons. General-purpose assistance rather than a curriculum-specific tutor. Region and account eligibility vary; verify the current requirements.
Photomath Terms effective October 1, 2025 set a 13+ minimum and require parental permission for minors. There is no equivalent documented parent dashboard in the cited material; supervision is normally done by the family or school. Terms prohibit cheating and describe the product as an educational aid; the rapid answer flow can still encourage copying. Camera images and derivatives may be sent to servers for recognition, indexing, testing and improvement. Photomath says it does not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 and may require consent for under-16 processing where applicable. Math only, from elementary arithmetic through calculus; scans printed, handwritten or on-screen problems and shows steps and alternative methods. Google Play showed 100M+ downloads and 3.1M reviews for Google LLC in 2026; listing updated July 29, 2026. Plan and regional details can change.
Socratic by Google The cited help page does not establish a current child age policy. No child-specific parent or school dashboard is established in the cited material. Analyzes a photo, typed question or voice input and presents relevant resources; a dedicated child-safety program is not documented in the cited page. Review current device and account permissions before use. Resource discovery across subjects rather than a clearly documented, supervised tutor. Current availability and terms should be checked before relying on it.

Khanmigo: the clearest documented parent-supervision model

Why it leads for family use

Khanmigo is built around tutoring rather than an answer-only search box. Its documented fit is broad: mathematics, humanities, coding and social studies. The assistant can ask a learner to explain a step, offer a hint or work through a misconception instead of immediately completing an assignment. That approach is useful when the family’s priority is learning behavior, not merely obtaining a final answer.

Khan Academy’s Help Center safety article, updated July 2, 2025, says the service uses moderation technology and limits daily interaction so sessions remain educational. It also says questionable content is considered for both safety and educational value. Those controls reduce exposure but do not replace an adult’s judgment about a particular child or topic.

What parents and schools can see

Khan Academy states: “Every child who has access to Khanmigo receives clear communication that their chat history and activities are visible to parents or guardians and, if applicable, their teacher and school administrator.” That visibility is the most concrete supervision promise among the options covered here. Tell the child in advance that the account is not a private diary, and decide who in the family or school will actually review the activity.

Access rules and setup

  1. Create or use the adult account required for the under-18 learner.
  2. Confirm that the current parent/learner offering is available in your region. The cited access guidance requires a U.S. billing address for the adult account.
  3. Complete the child’s account connection rather than handing a child an unsupervised adult login.
  4. Explain the visibility notice, daily limits and the expectation that the child asks for hints or explanations.
  5. Review chats and activities regularly, especially during the first weeks, and involve a teacher when the tool is being used for graded work.

Khan Academy says images shared with Khanmigo are not stored under its privacy policies. That statement applies to image storage, not to a blanket guarantee that every text interaction is private or that outputs are correct.

Microsoft Study and Learn: strongest fit for a managed school account

Eligibility is controlled by the school

Microsoft documents the Study and Learn Agent as available to Education users aged 13 or older with an A1, A3 or A5 Microsoft 365 Education license. In a K–12 tenant, administrators classify the organization and set student age groups through Microsoft Entra controls. Students under 13 are not granted access to Copilot Chat or Study and Learn.

This is a different safety model from a parent opening a consumer app. The school must configure the tenant correctly, and families should ask the school what logging, retention and staff-review settings apply. A student who is eligible by age may still be unable to use the agent if the institution has not enabled the service.

Filtering and refusal behavior

Microsoft says Study and Learn outputs pass through content-safety filters covering self-harm, sexual content, violence and hate speech. The agent is intended to use an educational, neutral tone and to decline requests that violate Microsoft’s Responsible AI standards. These filters address harmful content; they do not guarantee that an explanation is factually correct, matches a teacher’s method or is appropriate for a specific assignment.

How to use it responsibly in classwork

  • Have the student ask for a concept explanation, worked example or feedback on their own draft.
  • Require the student to check calculations, quotations and citations against class materials.
  • Follow the school’s policy on disclosure and permitted AI assistance.
  • Ask the administrator which age group, access and retention settings apply to the student’s account.

Microsoft Copilot for teens using personal accounts

Microsoft describes its consumer Copilot as 13+ in supported regions, with some jurisdictions setting a higher minimum. It says the service uses safety filters, gives age-appropriate handling for sensitive topics and reminds users that AI can be wrong. Parents can use Microsoft Family Safety or device-level settings to block access, set time limits or restrict features.

Microsoft’s cited young-people page says chats from users under 18 are not used to train AI models. It also notes that human review may occur for safety, legal, product-improvement or troubleshooting purposes. Parents should read the current privacy wording rather than assuming that “not used for training” means “never retained” or “never seen by a person.”

Because consumer Copilot is general-purpose, it does not provide the same curriculum connection or documented parent activity visibility as Khanmigo. It can still be useful for a supervised teenager who needs brainstorming, revision feedback or an explanation of a difficult term.

Photomath: excellent for worked mathematics, with a real privacy trade-off

What it does

Photomath lets a student scan printed, handwritten or on-screen problems and receive step-by-step explanations, sometimes with multiple solution methods. Its scope runs from elementary arithmetic through calculus, making it the most focused option for a learner who is stuck on a math exercise rather than a history essay or coding project.

Google Play’s 2026 listing for Google LLC showed 100M+ downloads and 3.1M reviews; the listing was updated July 29, 2026. Those figures describe store activity, not accuracy, learning outcomes or child safety.

Age, permission and anti-cheating rules

Photomath’s Terms of Service effective October 1, 2025 set a minimum age of 13 and require parental permission for minors. The terms describe Photomath as an educational tool and say it should be used as an aid and learning tool. They also prohibit cheating. A practical family rule is to require the child to predict the next step, read the explanation aloud and solve a similar problem without the camera before submitting work.

Camera and account-data questions

Photomath’s privacy policy says camera images may be stored on the device and sent to servers when connected to Wi-Fi for recognition, indexing, testing and service improvement. The policy says it will not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 and may require consent for processing data from under-16 users where applicable. The Google Play data-safety panel reports possible collection and sharing categories that vary by use, region and age.

Before enabling camera access, check the phone’s permission screen, avoid photographing names or other students’ work, and delete images or history the app no longer needs. A parent who is uncomfortable with server processing should choose typed problems or a different workflow, if the current app supports it, and verify the setting in the latest version.

Socratic by Google: useful resource discovery, limited safety documentation

Socratic can accept a photo, typed question or voice input, analyze it and present relevant resources intended to help the learner understand the topic. That makes it a potentially convenient starting point for research or a concept refresher.

The cited Google help page does not establish a child-specific moderation program, parent dashboard or current age policy. Treat it as an unsupervised resource finder unless your school or family has added device-level controls. Check links and explanations yourself, because a resource recommendation is not the same as a vetted lesson.

Choosing by age and situation

Child under 13

Do not create a Microsoft Study and Learn or consumer Copilot account for a child who does not meet the applicable minimum. Khanmigo is the option with the clearest documented parent-mediated route for an under-18 learner, subject to its current regional and billing requirements. Photomath’s terms set 13+; Socratic’s cited material does not establish a child policy, so it should not be treated as automatically suitable.

Teen aged 13 to 17 with a school account

Ask whether the school has an eligible A1, A3 or A5 Microsoft 365 Education license and has configured Entra age groups. If so, Study and Learn offers institution-level controls. Khanmigo can be appropriate when the family wants direct parent visibility, while Photomath is best reserved for math practice with explicit anti-copying rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teen using a personal device

Start with the service’s minimum age and regional terms, then enable Family Safety or equivalent device controls. A personal Copilot account may help with general study questions, but the family must supply the supervision that a school tenant or Khanmigo visibility model would otherwise provide.

Math problem photographed from a worksheet

Photomath is the specialist choice, provided the student is 13 or older, parental permission is in place when required, and the family accepts the camera-processing implications. For a younger child, ask a parent, teacher or an age-appropriate supervised service to work through the problem without uploading identifiable worksheet images.

A practical parent setup checklist

  1. Confirm age and account ownership. Use the child’s real age, the correct region and a parent or school account where required.
  2. Read the visibility notice together. Identify who can see chats, activities, prompts, uploaded images or school-account logs.
  3. Set a learning rule. The child must request an explanation or hint, show their own attempt and verify the result before copying anything into an assignment.
  4. Limit sensitive uploads. Crop names, faces, addresses, school identifiers and unrelated documents from photographs.
  5. Review device permissions. Camera, microphone, contacts, notifications and storage access should be enabled only when needed.
  6. Use time boundaries. Keep homework sessions short enough that the child still reads the textbook, writes by hand and asks a teacher for help.
  7. Check the output. Compare calculations, quotations, dates and scientific claims with a textbook or teacher-approved source.
  8. Report concerning behavior. Save the relevant conversation, stop the session and contact the school, platform or a trusted adult if the tool produces dangerous or sexual content, encourages self-harm or asks for personal information.

Common failure modes and fixes

The tool gives a confident but wrong answer

Ask it to show each step, identify assumptions and provide a way to check the result. Recalculate independently or compare with class materials. A safety filter does not equal a fact-checking guarantee.

The child copies a complete solution

Switch the prompt from “solve this” to “give me one hint,” require an attempt first and ask the child to solve a parallel problem without assistance. Photomath’s own terms frame the product as an aid, not a cheating service.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The account is blocked despite meeting the advertised age

Check whether the region has a higher minimum, whether a parent or guardian must create the account, whether a U.S. billing address is required for the cited Khanmigo plan, and whether a school administrator has enabled the Microsoft license and age group.

A camera-based helper raises privacy concerns

Remove identifying information from the image, review camera and network permissions, inspect the current privacy policy and delete stored scans when possible. Remember that Photomath documents server processing for recognition and service improvement.

A school and family give conflicting instructions

Follow the stricter rule for graded work. Ask the teacher whether AI assistance is allowed, what must be disclosed and which school-managed account should be used. Do not move a school assignment into a personal account merely to bypass tenant controls.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The safety claims above come from vendor, platform and help-center documentation, not an independent head-to-head safety test or a measured learning-outcome study. The documentation supports differences in age gates, moderation, visibility and data handling; it does not prove that one service will prevent every harmful response, protect every child in every region or improve grades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck terms, pricing, licensing, age rules and availability before publication or account creation. Keep an adult or teacher involved, particularly when a child is under 13, is uploading images or is using AI on assessed work.

Bottom line

Khanmigo is the best documented all-purpose choice when parent visibility and guided tutoring are the priorities. Microsoft Study and Learn is the better fit for a 13+ student inside a properly configured school Microsoft 365 environment. Photomath earns its place as a math-only step solver, but its 13+ requirement and camera-data processing make a privacy and anti-cheating conversation essential. Socratic can surface resources, yet its cited documentation does not establish comparable child-specific safeguards.
