There is no evidence-backed overall winner. Gemini, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot all have official desktop apps for Windows and macOS, but their strongest documented integrations differ. On Windows, compare Copilot’s Windows-specific tools with Gemini’s newer desktop app and ChatGPT’s companion window. On Mac, Gemini offers screen context, cross-app dictation, and local-folder connections; ChatGPT brings Chat, Work, and Codex together; and Copilot offers a global shortcut and device context. Choose by operating system, workflow, account, and the feature you actually plan to use—not by an unsupported claim that one assistant is smarter or faster.
How to choose an AI desktop assistant
Start with the computer you use and the task you want the assistant to handle. “Desktop assistant” can mean anything from a quick-access chat window to an app that can work with context from the screen, local files, or a browser. The three products in this comparison do not offer the same degree or type of desktop integration on both operating systems.

The most useful comparison is therefore about documented capabilities and fit. Google’s Gemini documentation highlights Google-connected apps and, on Mac, screen context, voice dictation across apps, and local folders through Gemini Spark. Microsoft documents the deepest set of Windows-specific Copilot capabilities in this comparison, including Vision, local file search, screenshot sharing, and help with Windows Settings. OpenAI describes a desktop app organized around Chat, Work, and Codex, with a built-in browser on both operating systems. Those descriptions establish what the vendors say their apps can do; they do not prove that one assistant gives better answers, runs faster, or is more reliable overall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Choose what to investigate first: Gemini if you use Google services or want its documented Mac screen and local-folder features; Copilot if you use Windows and want its documented Windows integrations; ChatGPT if you want Chat, Work, and Codex in one desktop app or want its built-in browser.
- Check compatibility: operating-system requirements differ, particularly on Mac.
- Check access: account type, subscription, workspace settings, location, language, and feature availability can affect what appears in the app.
Desktop app compatibility at a glance
The requirements below come from the vendors’ help pages and product documentation. “Not stated” means the cited vendor documentation does not provide a comparable minimum in the material available here; it does not mean the app has no requirements.

Mac: Option+Spacebar. |
For Gemini, Google’s desktop page lists Windows 10 or later on x64 and ARM64 and Apple Silicon MacBooks on macOS Sequoia 15 or later. Its separate Windows Help page specifies the RAM, disk, and internet requirements shown above. Google describes the Gemini app as available in countries and languages where the Gemini app is supported; feature availability varies, and selected features require a Google AI subscription for users aged 18 or older.
OpenAI lists macOS 14 and either Intel or Apple Silicon M1-or-later hardware for ChatGPT on Mac. Its Windows Help page lists Windows 10 x64 or arm64, build 17763.0 or later. OpenAI says some features available on macOS and the web may not be available in the Windows version covered by that help article. The Mac and Windows shortcuts also behave differently: on Windows, ChatGPT must be running for Alt+Space to open the companion window.
Microsoft’s support documentation confirms Copilot apps for Windows and Mac but does not provide a complete minimum-specification matrix comparable to Google’s and OpenAI’s figures above. A new Windows 11 PC should have Copilot installed by default, according to Microsoft; if it is not present, Microsoft says it can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Do not infer a specific hardware minimum from that statement.
What each desktop app adds to your workflow
Gemini: Google-connected work and Mac context tools
Google presents Gemini on desktop as an overlay that can be summoned while you work. Its shortcuts provide two levels of access on Mac: Option+Space opens mini chat, while Option+Shift+Space opens the full chat. On Windows, Alt+Space opens Gemini. This is useful if you want to ask a question or draft something without first navigating away from the app you have open.
The most distinctive documented Gemini desktop features in this comparison are for Mac. Google says the app can use screen context, support voice dictation and editing across open apps, and connect local folders through Gemini Spark. These are meaningful differences if your task depends on what is currently visible, speaking text into another app, or working with material stored in a folder. They should not be taken to mean that every app, file, or screen can be accessed automatically: the vendor material describes capabilities, and the user’s settings and the feature’s availability still matter.

Google says chats and memory sync across desktop, web, and mobile when you are signed in to the same Google account. That can make the desktop app part of a broader Google workflow rather than a separate conversation store. Google’s desktop page also emphasizes connections to Google apps, although the available features can vary and some require a Google AI subscription.
Google announced the Windows app globally on September 10, 2026, for Windows 10 and 11. The announcement lists Alt+Space, Google app connections, Spark, and image and video creation, while noting that some capabilities require a Google AI subscription and availability varies. Google’s current desktop page says that more native capabilities will roll out to Windows over time. That wording is important: the Windows app exists, but Google describes further native Windows integration as planned rather than already complete.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →ChatGPT: Chat, Work, Codex, and a built-in browser
OpenAI describes its new desktop app for Windows and macOS as bringing Chat, Work, and Codex together. The practical distinction is organizational: the app is designed to put those experiences in one desktop application, rather than limiting the desktop product to a chat window. OpenAI recommends the new app for agentic features and Codex. Its previous Mac app is now called ChatGPT Classic and remains supported, so a user who encounters both names should distinguish the newer app from the legacy one.
On Mac, Option+Space opens the Chat Bar. On Windows, Alt+Space opens a companion window while the app is running; OpenAI says the shortcut can be changed if another app already uses it. The Windows help page calls its documented version an early version and warns that a subset of features available in the macOS and web versions may not be available there. If a feature or control you expect is absent on Windows, that documented difference is a more useful starting point than assuming the account is misconfigured.
OpenAI also documents a built-in browser for the desktop app on both Windows and Mac. Its browser can share page context with ChatGPT, open multiple tabs, and support downloads. Availability can depend on the user’s plan and workspace settings. That makes the browser a potential fit for research or tasks that involve pages, but it is not safe to assume every account or managed workspace will have the same browser access.

Copilot: Windows-specific tools and a smaller documented Mac feature set
Microsoft documents Copilot features that tie directly to Windows. On supported configurations, Copilot Vision can use screen context; Copilot can search for and read local files in listed formats; users can share screenshots; web content can appear in a side pane; and Copilot can help navigate Windows Settings. Some of these functions depend on permissions or settings, so their presence in Microsoft’s feature list does not guarantee that they will be available without setup in every environment.
On Windows, the Copilot key or Windows+C provides quick access. Microsoft says the Copilot key can launch either the full app or a quick view, and keyboard shortcuts can be configured. A Windows 11 PC should have the app installed by default, with the Microsoft Store as Microsoft’s stated download route if it is missing.
Microsoft’s Mac support page documents a global Option+Spacebar shortcut, light and dark appearance settings, and device context for answering questions about the Mac. It also explicitly lists Copilot Pages and Deep Research as unavailable on macOS. If those two features are essential to your workflow, the Mac app’s documented feature set does not meet that requirement. The Windows feature list should not be assumed to apply wholesale to Copilot on Mac.
Which assistant fits Windows best?
For a Windows computer, compare the feature you need with the documented scope—not just the fact that all three have an app.
Pick Copilot to investigate Windows navigation and file workflows
Copilot has the clearest documented Windows-specific integration here. Its Vision, local file search and reading, screenshot sharing, side-pane web content, and Settings guidance are relevant if you want an assistant connected to Windows tasks. Confirm that the feature is supported and enabled in your configuration, and check any permission prompts. Microsoft’s documentation says some capabilities depend on permissions or settings.

Pick Gemini to investigate Google services and a newer Windows app
Gemini’s Windows app is available for Windows 10 and 11, and Google lists connections to Google apps, Spark, and image and video creation among the features in its September 10, 2026 launch announcement. Some features require a Google AI subscription, and availability varies. Google also says additional native Windows capabilities are planned, so someone seeking deeper Windows-specific control should distinguish the current app from future capabilities described as rolling out over time.
Pick ChatGPT to investigate the Chat, Work, and Codex desktop layout
ChatGPT’s Windows app is a fit to investigate if those combined experiences are the priority, or if the built-in browser’s page context and multiple tabs suit your work. Keep two qualifications in view: OpenAI describes the Windows version in its help page as early, with some macOS and web features potentially missing, and browser availability may depend on plan and workspace settings. Alt+Space only opens the companion window while ChatGPT is running.

Pick Gemini to investigate screen context, dictation, and local folders
Gemini’s documented Mac tools are particularly relevant if you want to use visible screen context, dictate and edit across open apps, or connect local folders through Spark. The Mac app requires Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later, so an Intel Mac or an older macOS version does not meet Google’s listed requirements. Google described the Mac app as globally available at no cost for Gemini users on macOS 15 and later in its launch announcement; availability of particular features can still vary, and selected features require a Google AI subscription.
Pick ChatGPT to investigate Intel Mac support and its combined app
ChatGPT supports macOS 14 or later on Intel as well as Apple Silicon M1 or later, which makes its listed Mac hardware compatibility broader than Gemini’s. It also brings Chat, Work, and Codex into the new desktop app and offers a built-in browser, subject to plan and workspace settings. Use Option+Space for the Chat Bar. If you already use the older Mac app, remember that OpenAI calls it ChatGPT Classic and continues to support it, while recommending the new app for agentic features and Codex.

Accounts, subscriptions, and availability to check
Before settling on an app, sign-in and feature access deserve a separate check from operating-system compatibility. A desktop installer can run while a particular feature remains unavailable because of account type, subscription, workspace policy, location, language, or permissions.
- Gemini: Sign in with a Google account. Google says desktop, web, and mobile chats and memory sync when the same account is used. Availability follows supported countries and languages, and some features require a Google AI subscription for users 18 and older. Google’s Windows launch announcement likewise says subscription is required for some features.
- ChatGPT: Use the same ChatGPT account for installation and sign-in. App functionality and built-in browser access can vary by plan and workspace settings. OpenAI’s Windows support page also cautions that the documented early Windows version may lack some features found on Mac and web.
- Copilot: Microsoft supports personal Microsoft accounts and work or school accounts, but the experience differs by account and applicable license. Microsoft describes personal use with or without Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium. Work or school experiences may have enterprise data protection; do not assume every work integration or protection applies to every account. Feature availability varies by subscription type.
For a managed work or school computer, check with the organization’s administrator if a feature is missing or a permission is blocked. The vendor descriptions establish that account and workspace conditions can matter; they do not establish that every license has the same integrations or protections.
A practical way to make the choice
- Write down the task. Decide whether you need a fast overlay, help with Windows Settings or files, screen context, dictation, local-folder access, a browser, or the Chat/Work/Codex layout. Choose one or two priority tasks rather than treating “AI assistant” as a single capability.
- Match the task to your operating system. On Windows, investigate Copilot for Windows-specific tools, Gemini for Google-connected desktop use, and ChatGPT for its combined desktop experiences and browser. On Mac, consider Gemini’s screen, dictation, and folder tools; ChatGPT’s Intel and Apple Silicon support plus Chat/Work/Codex; or Copilot’s shortcut and device context.
- Confirm the listed minimums before installing. In particular, Gemini for Mac needs Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later, while ChatGPT for Mac supports macOS 14 or later on Intel or M1-and-later Apple Silicon. For Windows, compare the listed Gemini and ChatGPT requirements against the computer’s version and architecture. Microsoft’s sources do not state a directly comparable minimum matrix here.
- Install from the vendor’s official route. Use the vendor’s own app listing or support page to locate the current installer, and sign in with the account you intend to use. Microsoft says Copilot should be installed by default on a new Windows 11 PC and can be obtained from the Microsoft Store if it is missing. Avoid assuming that an app listing alone grants access to every feature.
- Test the exact shortcut and workflow. Try the documented shortcut, then a representative task: for example, ask about the screen, use a local-folder connection, open a browser page, or ask for help with a Windows setting. This verifies that the particular capability is present in your app and account rather than merely advertised for the platform in general.
- Check account and permissions if a feature is absent. Confirm the signed-in account, subscription or license, workspace settings, feature permissions, and supported region or language where relevant. For a work or school account, organization policy may affect access.
What the documentation cannot tell you
Official feature pages are useful for compatibility, shortcuts, and available integrations, but they are not independent performance tests. The documentation summarized here does not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison of answer accuracy, response speed, reliability, privacy across every configuration, or user satisfaction. It also does not provide numerical benchmark results for these three desktop apps.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

That means a recommendation should remain conditional. A feature match—such as Gemini’s documented Mac folder connection or Copilot’s Windows Settings help—is a reason to try that app for the task, not proof it will perform better than the alternatives. If answer quality matters most, test the same representative prompts and files in the apps you can access, using equivalent account and feature settings. Treat the result as your own workflow check, not as a universal ranking.
