There is no single best AI code assistant for every IntelliJ user. JetBrains AI Assistant is the most direct starting point because it is built into the JetBrains workflow, supports inline completion, next-edit suggestions, project-aware chat, local or provider models, and multiple coding agents. GitHub Copilot is the stronger alternative when your team already works in GitHub and wants Copilot’s model and agent service inside JetBrains IDEs. The subscriptions are separate, and the right choice depends on whether you need lightweight completion or sustained, multi-file agent work.
Use the comparison below to check edition eligibility, quotas, model control, privacy settings, and the real cost of your workload before subscribing.

Quick answer: which IntelliJ assistant should you choose?
Choose JetBrains AI Assistant first if you want the fewest moving parts inside IntelliJ IDEA, local-model or bring-your-own-provider options, and access to several agents from one IDE interface. JetBrains documents autocomplete, next-edit suggestions, context-aware chat, multi-step coding agents, MCP tools, and ACP-compatible external agents in the plugin documentation: JetBrains AI Assistant in JetBrains IDEs.
Choose GitHub Copilot if your code, pull requests, and team policies already center on GitHub, or if you specifically want Copilot’s agent mode in a supported JetBrains IDE. Copilot is connected through GitHub OAuth and requires its own active subscription; a JetBrains AI subscription does not include it. See JetBrains’ integration announcement and GitHub’s plan page for the current requirements: JetBrains Copilot integration announcement and GitHub Copilot plans.

- Multi-file changes, command execution, and tests: compare agent permissions, credit consumption, and approval controls rather than headline subscription prices.
- Local or provider choice: JetBrains AI documents local models, provider credentials, and external agents; the cited Copilot pages do not establish equivalent local-model support.
- Proprietary code: inspect data-sharing defaults and organization policy before enabling a hosted model.
Neither vendor’s documentation proves that its assistant writes better code or produces larger productivity gains. Features and prices establish what you can use; a short, controlled trial on a representative repository is the reliable way to decide.
What JetBrains AI Assistant provides in IntelliJ IDEA
IDE-native completion and next edits
JetBrains describes AI Assistant as a plugin compatible with IntelliJ IDEA and almost all other JetBrains IDEs. It can suggest a single line or a larger block while you type, and its next-edit feature predicts where you are likely to make the next change. Completion and next-edit suggestions use JetBrains-trained models and do not consume the AI quota described in the JetBrains FAQ. IntelliJ IDEA 2026.1 release notes specifically identify next-edit suggestions for Java, Kotlin, and Scala: IntelliJ IDEA 2026.1 release notes.
Project-aware chat
AI Assistant can use selected project files, folders, symbols, and commits as context. That makes it suitable for questions such as explaining a service class, tracing a call path, proposing a test for an existing method, or preparing a refactor plan. Context selection still matters: review which files are attached before sending a prompt, especially in a repository containing credentials, customer data, or regulated code.
Recommended Free Tools
Agents and tool use
The JetBrains documentation names Junie, Claude Agent, Codex, and GitHub Copilot among the agents that can be used through the AI Assistant experience. ACP-compatible external agents can also be connected. Agent mode is materially different from completion: an agent may plan a sequence of edits, modify several files, call tools, and run commands or tests, subject to the permissions and confirmations shown by the IDE. The documentation establishes availability of these integrations, not their relative coding quality.
Model and provider flexibility
JetBrains documents selecting provider credentials, using local models, and connecting external agents through the Agent Client Protocol. This is useful when a company has an approved model endpoint, wants to keep inference on a controlled network, or needs to switch providers without replacing the IDE. Availability depends on the model, plugin version, network access, and organization policy; confirm the options presented in your installation.
What GitHub Copilot adds to a JetBrains workflow
Copilot in JetBrains AI Chat
JetBrains announced GitHub Copilot as an integrated agent in JetBrains IDE AI Chat. Authentication uses GitHub OAuth, and an active GitHub Copilot subscription is required. Your JetBrains AI plan and Copilot plan remain separate accounts and charges: the integration announcement.

Completion, next edits, chat, and agent mode
GitHub lists JetBrains IDEs as a supported environment and lists agent mode among supported features on its individual plans page. Paid plans provide unlimited completions and next-edit suggestions under the plan terms, while chat and agent interactions draw from the plan’s AI-credit allowance. The Free plan has a monthly completion allowance and more limited chat or agent access. The exact model menu and limits can change, so check the live plan page before purchase.
Where Copilot is the practical fit
Copilot is a natural fit for developers who already use GitHub identity, repositories, pull requests, and organization-level Copilot controls. It can still be used by an individual IntelliJ developer, but the value of the subscription is easier to justify when the same account and policy framework covers the rest of the development workflow.

The table describes documented capabilities, not a head-to-head performance result. Model availability, language support, indexing behavior, and permissions can change with plugin and IDE releases.
2026 pricing, quotas, and eligibility
The figures below are the prices and allowances published on the cited plan pages accessed in October 2026. Taxes, regional currency conversion, renewal terms, model catalogs, and quotas can change; verify the checkout page for your account and country.
JetBrains AI plans
| JetBrains plan | Published price evidence | Usage and quota details | Important eligibility note |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Free | Not stated as a numeric price in the cited FAQ; the plan is named AI Free. | Unlimited completion with JetBrains’ Mellum model, unlimited use of connected local models, and a limited cloud quota. | AI Free is not available in IntelliJ IDEA without an Ultimate subscription. |
| AI Pro | Not stated as a complete numeric price in the cited FAQ. | Includes a cloud quota; a 30-day trial is described for first activation. | AI Pro is included at no additional cost for some license holders, including All Products Pack and dotUltimate users, subject to JetBrains’ listed exceptions. |
| AI Ultimate | JetBrains’ FAQ gives an individual example of USD 30.00 per month with USD 35.00 in AI Credits. | One AI Credit is equivalent to USD 1.00. Included quota resets every 30 days from first activation; unused included quota does not roll over. Purchased top-up credits remain valid for 12 months. | Confirm the current regional price and quota on the live JetBrains AI FAQ and pricing flow. |
JetBrains does not expose a complete numeric schedule for every plan in the cited FAQ text. Do not infer the missing prices from the Ultimate example. The same FAQ also explains data-sharing defaults and license eligibility: JetBrains AI FAQ.
GitHub Copilot individual plans
| Plan | Monthly price shown by GitHub | Published allowance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copilot Free | USD 0 | 2,000 completions per month; chat and agent use is limited under the plan terms. | Intended for individuals without organizational access; useful for trying completion before paying. |
| Copilot Pro | USD 10 per user per month | GitHub’s plan page lists USD 15 in monthly total AI credits. GitHub Docs separately lists 1,500 credits, with one credit equal to USD 0.01. | Unlimited completions and next-edit suggestions, but chat and agent interactions consume credits. |
| Copilot Pro+ | USD 39 per user per month | USD 70 in monthly total AI credits on the plan page; GitHub Docs lists 7,000 credits. | More room for model-heavy chat and agent workloads than Pro, subject to current model multipliers and terms. |
| Copilot Max | USD 100 per user per month | USD 200 in monthly total AI credits on the plan page; GitHub Docs lists 20,000 credits. | Designed for sustained, higher-volume agent use; verify current limits and eligible models before relying on it. |
GitHub’s plan page is at github.com/features/copilot/plans, and the credit definitions and eligibility details are in GitHub’s Copilot plans documentation. Model choice and task complexity affect credit consumption. A monthly subscription price therefore does not equal unlimited agent activity.

Check these requirements before installing anything
- IntelliJ edition: identify whether you use IntelliJ IDEA Community or Ultimate. The AI Free eligibility restriction applies specifically to IntelliJ IDEA installations without an Ultimate subscription.
- Plugin and IDE versions: update IntelliJ IDEA and the AI Assistant plugin through the IDE’s normal update controls so the documented integrations and labels are available.
- Accounts: JetBrains AI requires the relevant JetBrains account or configured provider; Copilot requires a GitHub account with an active Copilot subscription when used as the integrated agent.
- Network and policy: hosted models need the network access allowed by your company. Enterprise administrators may centrally control data sharing, plugins, and approved providers.
- Repository safety: remove secrets from prompts and review file context before allowing an agent to edit or run commands.
Install and configure JetBrains AI Assistant
- In IntelliJ IDEA, open Settings/Preferences | Plugins | Marketplace, search for AI Assistant, and install the JetBrains plugin. Restart the IDE if prompted.
- Open the AI Assistant tool window and sign in with the JetBrains account associated with your eligible license. If your organization supplies a provider or local endpoint, follow the model/provider configuration exposed in the plugin settings instead.
- Open the completion and editor settings and enable inline completion or next-edit suggestions. Start with the default model so you can establish a baseline before changing providers.
- Open AI Chat, select a small project scope, and ask for an explanation or test plan rather than an unrestricted repository rewrite. Inspect the files included as context.
- For an agent task, choose the required agent from the agent selector, read the requested permissions, and require confirmation before shell commands, dependency changes, or broad file edits.
- Run the project’s normal formatter, compiler, and tests after every accepted change. Treat generated code as a proposed patch, not as a verified result.
Connect GitHub Copilot in IntelliJ
- Confirm that your GitHub account has an active Copilot plan. A JetBrains AI subscription alone does not unlock Copilot.
- Install or update JetBrains AI Assistant in IntelliJ IDEA so the integrated AI Chat experience is available.
- Open AI Chat and use the agent selector to choose GitHub Copilot. Follow the browser-based GitHub OAuth flow and approve the requested access.
- Return to IntelliJ and verify that the Copilot agent is selected for the current chat. Run a low-risk task, such as generating a unit-test outline, before granting write or command permissions.
- Monitor your Copilot usage and credit balance in GitHub’s account controls. Move large refactors into smaller, reviewable tasks because agent interactions consume credits.
Choose by the work you actually do
If you mainly want faster typing
Start with inline completion and next-edit suggestions. These features have different quota treatment from agent chat, so a developer who rarely asks for multi-file changes may not benefit from a higher agent-credit tier. Compare accepted suggestions, unwanted edits, latency, and how often you must correct imports or types in your own Java, Kotlin, Scala, or other project language.
If you routinely refactor several files
Evaluate agent planning, file-context selection, command approvals, and test execution. JetBrains AI offers several agent integrations through one interface; Copilot offers its own agent mode when connected with a paid Copilot account. Ask each assistant to perform the same bounded change, then inspect the diff, test result, dependency changes, and credits consumed. Do not judge an agent only by whether it produced a plausible first response.
If you need local or organization-approved inference
JetBrains is the clearer candidate because its documentation explicitly covers connected local models and provider credentials. Confirm that your chosen local model supports the context length, language, and tool calls your project needs. A local endpoint can reduce data leaving your network, but it does not automatically guarantee secure logging, retention, or model quality; those are configuration and vendor-policy questions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your team is standardized on GitHub
Copilot can reduce account switching and fit existing GitHub administration. Check whether your organization already assigns Copilot seats or imposes model and data policies. If you are an individual without organizational access, the Free, Pro, Pro+, and Max choices are the relevant published tiers.
If you need one assistant with multiple agent choices
JetBrains AI’s documented Junie, Claude Agent, Codex, Copilot, MCP, and ACP options provide a broader integration surface in the IDE. That flexibility can be valuable, but it also means comparing each agent’s account requirement, model billing, permissions, and privacy behavior rather than assuming one JetBrains quota covers every external service.
How quota economics work in practice
Separate completion volume from agent volume. JetBrains says completion and next-edit suggestions do not consume AI quota. GitHub’s paid plans list unlimited completions and next-edit suggestions, while chat and agent interactions consume AI credits. A developer who accepts thousands of small completions but runs only a few agents has a different cost profile from a developer who asks an agent to analyze an entire repository, edit ten files, run tests, and revise the patch.

For JetBrains AI, note the reset and rollover rules: included quota resets every 30 days from first activation, unused included quota does not roll over, and purchased top-up credits remain valid for 12 months. For Copilot, compare the published dollar credit totals with the documentation’s credit counts and remember that one Copilot credit equals USD 0.01. Model choice and task complexity can change how quickly credits are consumed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before choosing a tier, record one representative week:
- number of completion-heavy coding sessions;
- number of chat questions that require project context;
- number of agent tasks and files changed per task;
- commands or tests an agent runs;
- which model or agent each task uses; and
- the proportion of generated changes you keep after review.
Use that record to estimate a normal month, then leave headroom for release work or incidents. Recheck the live plan pages immediately before subscribing because prices, credit pools, and model multipliers are volatile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy, data sharing, and administration
JetBrains states that data sharing is opt-in for paid licenses, including individual and company licenses and trials. For non-commercial licenses, data sharing is enabled by default but can be disabled in settings. Company settings can be maintained centrally by administrators, so an individual toggle may not override an organization policy. Read the current controls and policy in the JetBrains AI FAQ before sending proprietary code.
Copilot access is governed through GitHub’s account and organization controls. The cited plan pages establish subscription and credit terms, but your organization may apply additional repository, model, or data policies. Ask an administrator which files and prompts may be transmitted, how long provider logs are retained, and whether model-training use is disabled under your agreement.

- Select three representative tasks: a new method with tests, a bug fix that crosses two files, and a refactor that must preserve behavior.
- Use the same IntelliJ project snapshot, requirements, and test command for each assistant. Do not let one tool see the other tool’s patch.
- Start with identical context: the same files, symbols, and issue description. Record any extra context each assistant requires.
- Measure time to a compiling patch, number of review corrections, test failures, files changed beyond the request, and quota or credits consumed.
- Check security and maintainability: input validation, exception handling, concurrency, logging, dependency changes, and documentation.
- Repeat a task at least once after revising the prompt. A single lucky or poor response is not a stable product ranking.
Keep the result specific to your repository, language mix, and team policies. A tool that wins on boilerplate completion may still be the wrong choice for a team that needs local inference or high-volume agents.
Troubleshooting common problems
The AI Free option is missing
Check the IntelliJ IDEA edition and the JetBrains account attached to the IDE. JetBrains states that AI Free is not available in IntelliJ IDEA without an Ultimate subscription. If your license should qualify, sign out and back in, update the plugin, and ask your administrator whether the organization has disabled the feature.
Copilot appears in IntelliJ but requests payment
The integration does not transfer JetBrains AI entitlement to GitHub. Confirm that the GitHub account used during OAuth has an active Copilot subscription or an organization-assigned seat. Reauthenticate with the correct account if your browser selected a different GitHub identity.
Suggestions stop after heavy agent use
Check whether the interruption concerns completion or agent chat. JetBrains treats completion separately from AI quota, while Copilot’s chat and agent interactions consume credits. Review the relevant account dashboard, wait for the stated reset period, or reduce context and task scope.
An agent changes too much code
Revert the branch, narrow the attached files, and restate acceptance tests. Require confirmation before write operations and commands. Ask for a plan and proposed diff first, then authorize one logical step at a time.
Generated code fails to compile or test
Give the assistant the exact compiler or test output, not a general request to “fix everything.” Ask for the smallest patch, inspect imports and dependency changes, and run the formatter, compiler, static checks, and tests yourself. Passing tests do not remove the need for security and code review.
Decision matrix
| Your priority | Best first choice | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native IntelliJ workflow with multiple agents | JetBrains AI Assistant | One plugin documents completion, project chat, several agents, MCP, ACP, provider credentials, and local models. | IDE edition, model availability, agent account requirements, and quota for the selected service. |
| GitHub-centered identity and administration | GitHub Copilot | Copilot is integrated into JetBrains AI Chat and fits GitHub’s account and organization controls. | Separate Copilot subscription, OAuth account, credit allowance, and organization policy. |
| Low-cost completion trial | Copilot Free or an eligible JetBrains tier | Copilot Free lists 2,000 monthly completions; JetBrains documents unlimited Mellum completion for AI Free where eligibility is met. | Whether your IntelliJ license qualifies and how much chat or agent access is included. |
| Local-model or provider flexibility | JetBrains AI Assistant | Local models and provider credentials are explicitly documented. | Supported endpoint, context length, security controls, and model performance on your language. |
| High-volume agent work | Compare JetBrains AI Ultimate with Copilot Pro+, Max, or an eligible company plan | Both ecosystems expose paid usage pools, but their credit units and model pricing are different. | Monthly task record, credit burn, rollover rules, top-up validity, and renewal price. |
Verdict
For most IntelliJ users who want one place to experiment with completion, project chat, local models, and several agents, JetBrains AI Assistant is the sensible first evaluation. For developers already committed to GitHub’s workflow and willing to maintain a separate Copilot subscription, GitHub Copilot is a strong alternative, especially when Copilot’s agent mode and organization controls matter.
