Best AI Budgeting Apps That Work by Text Message (2026 Guide)

Rowan by Rocket Money is the clearest match for a budgeting app that works through two-way carrier SMS. It answers account questions in plain language and lets Premium+ subscribers maintain a budget by texting. Rocket Companies announced on August 25, 2026 that Rowan can monitor finances, renegotiate recurring bills, cancel subscriptions and create automated savings transfers through text.

The other useful choices solve different problems. Herbert is a read-only finance assistant that texts alerts before you ask. HomeSum and Omoi import transaction details from bank SMS locally rather than carrying on a conversation by SMS. Koma is a multilingual, chat-first option for GCC pay-cycle budgeting, while Finny accepts natural-language text inside an iPhone app but is not a carrier-SMS service.

App Message channel What it can do Bank or data connection Geography and language Platform and privacy notes Free access and price
Rowan by Rocket Money Two-way carrier SMS Answer spending questions, maintain a budget, warn about anomalies and upcoming bills; Rocket Companies also says it can renegotiate recurring bills, cancel subscriptions and create automated savings transfers. Rocket Money account and connected financial data; the cited material does not specify a separate bank-connection method. Availability and regional limits should be checked before subscribing; language support is not stated. Conversation happens in the phone’s text-message thread. Rowan was developed with Anthropic, according to Rocket Companies. Included with Premium+; Rocket Money’s cited roundup lists $15 per month. Confirm current availability and price.
Herbert Proactive SMS plus native app Texts first about forgotten subscriptions, idle cash, bill spikes and low balances; categorizes transactions and detects recurring charges. Read-only Plaid connection to more than 12,000 banks; Herbert says it never moves your money. Supported bank coverage depends on Plaid and your region; language support is not stated. Read-only access limits action risk. Herbert’s page reports a 98% text open rate; that is a vendor claim, not an independent study. 30-day free trial, then $13 monthly or $95 annually, according to the page’s June 2026 listing.
HomeSum Local SMS and notification import Captures transaction messages, scans receipts, provides an AI assistant and advanced insights. On-device parsing; HomeSum says message content is never uploaded and only a confirmed expense is saved. Built for MENA use cases; currency and pricing are listed in Egyptian pounds. Android capture is automatic. On iPhone, a one-time Shortcuts automation is required. Pro: EGP 69 monthly or EGP 699 yearly. The cited material does not state a separate free-tier allowance.
Omoi Opt-in Android bank-SMS parser Extracts amount, merchant, date and bank from transaction texts, suggests a category and waits for confirmation before counting the expense. Parsing occurs on the device; the original message is discarded after extraction, according to Omoi’s FAQ. Works where banks send recognizable transaction SMS; language and country list are not stated. No carrier-SMS conversation; it is an import and confirmation workflow. Price and paid-plan details are not stated in the cited material.
Koma In-app and Telegram-style chat; optional Android payment-alert reading Logs typed, spoken or photographed expenses; supports pay-cycle budgets, family-support tracking and multilingual AI entry. Optional selected Android payment alerts; no bank login is required for that alert-reading workflow. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman; English, Arabic and Arabizi. Primary experience is app or web chat, not carrier SMS. The site describes Telegram-style logging. Free tier includes 10 AI messages per pay cycle; Koma+ is AED 23 monthly.
Finny Natural-language text inside an iOS app Parses entries such as groceries $42, plus voice input and receipt photos; asks you to confirm the suggestion. No bank linking in the cited description. iOS; language and geography beyond the cited examples are not stated. Manual entry means it does not read carrier SMS or bank messages automatically. Price and free-plan limits are not stated in the cited material.

What “works by text message” can mean

Search results often mix four different products. A two-way carrier-SMS assistant lets you send a question to a normal phone-number conversation and receive an answer, as Rowan does. A proactive SMS service sends alerts without waiting for a prompt; Herbert is the documented example. A local bank-SMS importer reads transaction notifications on your device, extracts the fields and adds an expense; HomeSum and Omoi fit here. An in-app text-entry tool accepts ordinary language in its own chat screen but does not use your carrier’s messaging network; Koma and Finny use this model.

This distinction matters for privacy, setup and expectations. Sending “How much did I spend on restaurants?” to Rowan is a conversational action. Receiving a Herbert warning about a bill spike is an alert. Confirming an Omoi suggestion created from a bank notification is an import workflow. Typing “groceries $42” into Finny is simply faster manual entry. They should not be treated as interchangeable features.

Rowan: the strongest true two-way SMS match

What Rowan does

Rocket Money describes Rowan as living in your text messages. You can ask plain-language questions about spending and maintain a budget without opening a dashboard. The cited roundup says Rowan can answer account questions, warn about unusual activity and upcoming bills, and act on subscriptions and bills. Rocket Companies’ August 25, 2026 launch release goes further, describing monitoring, recurring-bill renegotiation, subscription cancellation and automated savings transfers through conversational texts.

That combination of answering and taking account actions is why Rowan is the best fit for searches such as “AI budget app by SMS” or “can I track spending by texting an AI?” It is not merely a parser for incoming bank alerts. It is designed as a continuing text conversation connected to your Rocket Money financial data.

Cost and availability

Rowan is included with Rocket Money Premium+, listed at $15 per month in the cited roundup. The launch material does not establish universal availability, supported countries or language coverage, so check the current Premium+ offer and any regional restrictions before relying on it for a household budget. Pricing and plan packaging can change after the August 2026 announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use cases and trade-offs

  • Use Rowan when you want to ask follow-up questions in ordinary language rather than classify every purchase yourself.
  • It is the only option in this group with documented two-way carrier-SMS budget maintenance.
  • Its ability to cancel subscriptions, renegotiate bills or create transfers means you should read each proposed action and confirm that the recipient, amount and timing are correct.
  • The cited material does not provide an independent accuracy study or a detailed explanation of how bank connections and message retention work, so review Rocket Money’s current privacy and authorization screens.

Herbert: proactive alerts with read-only access

How its text-first model works

Herbert calls itself “the money app that texts you first.” Instead of waiting for a question, it monitors connected accounts and sends messages about forgotten subscriptions, idle cash, bill increases and low balances. Its native app categorizes transactions and detects recurring charges, while SMS delivers the prompts that are most likely to need attention.

Herbert connects through read-only Plaid access to more than 12,000 banks. The service says it never moves your money. That makes it materially different from an assistant that can initiate a transfer or cancel a service: Herbert can point out a problem, but the user must take the financial action elsewhere.

Trial, price and evidence limits

The official page lists a 30-day free trial, followed by $13 per month or $95 per year. It also reports a 98% text open rate. Treat that percentage as Herbert’s own marketing claim, not an independently measured result; no head-to-head outcome study was identified for these apps. The page says its feature comparison reflects publicly listed features as of June 2026, so verify current terms.

Who should choose it

Herbert is the better fit if the phrase “texts me” means timely reminders rather than a chat you initiate. It suits someone who wants a low-interaction safety net for recurring charges and cash-flow changes, and who prefers read-only monitoring. It is not the right description for a bank-SMS reader, because the financial data arrives through Plaid rather than by parsing the texts your bank sends to your phone.

HomeSum: MENA-focused local SMS capture

What gets imported

HomeSum targets MENA users whose banks and payment services send transaction notifications. Its Pro plan adds automatic SMS and notification capture, receipt scanning, an AI assistant and advanced insights. The app parses messages on the device, and HomeSum says the message content is never uploaded; only the expense you confirm is saved.

Android versus iPhone

On Android, capture is automatic once the relevant permissions and sources are enabled. On iPhone, HomeSum uses a one-time Shortcuts automation because iOS does not expose general SMS reading in the same way. That difference is central to the setup: an Android user can receive ongoing imports, while an iPhone user must configure the shortcut and may need to keep the bank-message format compatible with the parser.

Pricing and fit

HomeSum lists Pro at EGP 69 per month or EGP 699 per year. Those figures are Egyptian-pound prices aimed at the service’s MENA audience, not a universal dollar conversion. Choose HomeSum when your goal is to turn incoming bank notifications into a ledger while keeping message text on the device. Do not choose it expecting a conversational SMS number that answers budget questions.

Omoi: privacy-oriented Android transaction parsing

Confirmation-first workflow

Omoi’s FAQ describes an opt-in Android parser. It reads a bank transaction SMS locally, extracts the amount, merchant, date and bank, discards the original message and files the expense under a category. The expense does not count against the budget until you confirm it. That confirmation step helps prevent a promotional text, duplicate alert or misread amount from silently changing your totals.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What it does not do

Omoi is not presented as a chatbot. You do not text a question to Omoi and receive an analysis of your accounts. Its value is the local, structured import path: the transaction message is converted into a proposed expense, with the original text removed after extraction according to the FAQ. The cited material does not state pricing, supported banks, countries or language coverage, so test a representative bank message before depending on it for every purchase.

Koma: GCC multilingual chat and pay-cycle budgeting

Supported input and planning model

Koma is designed for the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. You can type, speak or photograph an expense in English, Arabic or Arabizi. Its budgeting model follows pay cycles rather than assuming one monthly payday, and it includes a way to track family support. Those features make it more relevant to GCC household patterns than a generic category-only tracker.

Payment-alert option

Koma can optionally read selected Android payment alerts without requiring a bank login. This is closer to local notification capture than to a two-way carrier-SMS assistant. Its main workflow is app or web chat, with Telegram-style logging described on the product page. Keep that distinction in mind if you specifically need a conventional SMS thread.

Free limits and paid tier

The listed free tier allows 10 AI messages per pay cycle. Koma+ costs AED 23 per month. The allowance is per pay cycle, not an unlimited monthly message quota, so a user with frequent corrections or receipt entries should check how the cycle is defined in the current app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finny: natural-language entry inside an iPhone app

Finny belongs in this list only if “text message” includes typing a natural-language expense into an app. Its cited description gives the example groceries $42; Finny proposes an interpretation and asks you to confirm it. It also accepts voice input and receipt photos, runs on iOS and does not require bank linking in the described workflow.

Because Finny does not read carrier SMS or bank notifications automatically, it will not satisfy a request for an app that texts you alerts or imports every bank text. It is useful for people who want fast manual capture with less form filling and who are comfortable reviewing each suggestion.

Which app fits your specific text-message goal?

You want to ask questions and manage a budget by SMS

Choose Rowan first. It is the only product here with documented two-way carrier texting for account questions and budget maintenance. Review every proposed bill, subscription or transfer action before confirming it, and verify that Premium+ is available in your region.

You want the app to warn you before you remember to check

Choose Herbert. Its proactive messages focus on subscriptions, idle balances, bill spikes and low balances, while read-only Plaid access keeps it from moving funds. The trade-off is that it analyzes linked accounts rather than your bank’s own SMS messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want bank texts converted into expenses on the device

Choose HomeSum or Omoi. HomeSum adds receipt scanning, an AI assistant and MENA-oriented pricing, with automatic Android capture and an iPhone Shortcut. Omoi emphasizes a minimal local parser that extracts four transaction fields, discards the original message and waits for confirmation. Neither is a conversational SMS budget assistant.

You budget around GCC pay cycles or use Arabic and Arabizi

Choose Koma. Its regional coverage, multilingual input, family-support tracking and pay-cycle structure are more specific than the generic text-entry options. Use its Android alert capture if desired, but expect the primary interaction to occur in the app or web chat.

You only need quick manual text entry on iPhone

Finny is the simplest match among these options when you want to type an expense, confirm the interpretation and avoid bank linking. It does not provide automatic SMS import or proactive financial alerts.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Privacy, permissions and account-risk differences

Local parsing and cloud account monitoring are different privacy decisions. HomeSum says the bank-message content stays on the device and only a confirmed expense is saved. Omoi similarly describes on-device extraction, discarding the original SMS after pulling out the amount, merchant, date and bank. Those claims reduce the amount of message text sent to a server, but you still need to review Android notification or SMS permissions and the app’s current privacy policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Herbert’s Plaid connection is read-only, and Herbert says it never moves money. Rowan’s documented feature set includes actions such as subscription cancellation and automated savings transfers, so its authorization prompts deserve closer attention. Koma’s optional payment-alert reading avoids a bank login for that workflow, while Finny’s cited flow avoids bank linking by relying on manual entry.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Confusing alerts with two-way SMS

An app that sends a text when a balance is low is not necessarily able to answer a follow-up question by text. Herbert is the documented proactive example; Rowan is the documented two-way example. Check the channel before subscribing.

Assuming every bank message will parse

SMS importers depend on the wording, sender and fields in a bank’s notification. A changed template, unsupported language or missing merchant name can produce an incomplete suggestion. Confirm the first several imports manually and keep a backup entry method.

Expecting iPhone and Android behavior to match

HomeSum’s automatic Android capture and one-time iPhone Shortcut are not equivalent. Omoi’s parser is specifically described for Android. Koma’s payment-alert option is also Android-focused. Platform should be a deciding criterion, not a footnote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating vendor metrics as independent proof

Herbert’s 98% open rate comes from Herbert. There is no independent head-to-head outcome study in the cited material showing that one app improves savings or reduces overspending more than another. Use the metrics to understand how a vendor positions its service, not as a guaranteed result.

Ignoring currency and region

HomeSum’s prices are in Egyptian pounds, Koma’s in UAE dirhams, and Herbert and Rowan are listed in US dollars. Regional bank support, language coverage and plan availability can change. Confirm the price, trial conversion date and supported institutions shown to you at sign-up.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Name the channel you actually need. Select carrier SMS for a two-way conversation, proactive SMS for alerts, local import for bank notifications, or in-app chat for manual entry.
  2. Decide whether the assistant may act. Rowan’s documented actions go beyond explanation; Herbert is read-only; importers wait for confirmation; Finny is manual.
  3. Check your phone platform. Android supports the automatic or opt-in notification workflows described for HomeSum, Omoi and Koma. iPhone users should expect HomeSum’s Shortcut setup and Finny’s native app flow.
  4. Match the geography and language. Koma covers six GCC markets and three input styles; HomeSum targets MENA; the other products have narrower or unstated regional and language details in the cited material.
  5. Test a real transaction. Use a recent, low-risk purchase to verify the merchant name, amount, date, category and confirmation behavior before importing a full history.
  6. Recheck the commercial terms. Trials, monthly prices, annual prices and regional availability can change after the dates cited above.

Bottom line

For a genuine AI budgeting conversation over ordinary text messages, start with Rowan. For unsolicited SMS reminders backed by read-only account data, Herbert is the better fit. For privacy-focused conversion of bank notifications into expenses, use HomeSum or Omoi; for GCC multilingual, pay-cycle budgeting, use Koma; and for simple manual text entry on iPhone, consider Finny. The key decision is not which app uses the word “text,” but whether you need two-way SMS, proactive alerts, local bank-SMS import or in-app entry.
