If you’re weighing a refurbished MacBook Air mainly to save money, start by comparing it with the new MacBook Neo. For Windows, consider the Dell XPS 13 (2026); for web-first work, the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) can be an option when it’s on sale. Which is best depends on your required apps, workload, memory needs and the actual price of the exact configuration.

This is US-oriented guidance. Prices and availability change, and the candidates have not been tested head-to-head using one method.

Which alternative fits your needs?

These are announcement prices, not confirmation of today’s price or stock. Apple’s announcement 8GB of memory is not upgradeable; it may constrain demanding creative work and heavier multitasking. Dell XPS 13 (2026) Readers who need Windows RTINGS describes it at around $599 with eligible student pricing; eligibility and exact configuration matter. RTINGS RTINGS flags the 8GB configuration. TechRadar reports a weight of 2.2 pounds. TechRadar
Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) Browser-based work and ChromeOS apps RTINGS names it a Chromebook pick under $600, but gives its base US MSRP as $700; the lower price depends on a sale. RTINGS ChromeOS may not support software available only for Windows or macOS. TechRadar

Do you need macOS?

If you want a new Mac and your work is mostly school tasks, browsing and light multitasking, the MacBook Neo is the closest like-for-like starting point: it runs macOS without requiring you to buy a refurbished Air. Apple announced it at $599 in the US, with $499 education pricing, and said availability would begin March 11, 2026. Those figures describe the launch announcement; check current pricing and stock before buying. Apple Newsroom

The important compromise is memory. RTINGS reports that the Neo has 8GB of non-upgradeable memory, which it considers workable for typical schoolwork and light multitasking, but not ideal for heavy multitasking or demanding creative work. If you routinely keep many demanding apps open or edit large creative projects, treat that fixed capacity as a reason to compare other configurations rather than assuming the entry price makes it a fit. • VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — MacBook Air features a MagSafe charging port, two Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack

Apple claims up to 16 hours of battery life for the Neo and says web browsing is up to 50 percent faster than the bestselling PC with the latest shipping Intel Core Ultra 5. These are manufacturer claims, not independently comparable results across the laptops here. Apple Newsroom

Do you need Windows?

The Dell XPS 13 (2026) is the Windows option in this shortlist. RTINGS describes it at around $599 with eligible student pricing, but the student price is conditional and configurations differ. Check the final price and confirm memory and storage on the exact model before treating it as a value alternative. RTINGS also flags an 8GB configuration, so compare that limitation with your workload. RTINGS

Rank #2

Would a Chromebook work?

The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) is worth considering if your work is mainly in a browser and compatible ChromeOS apps. RTINGS includes it in its under-$600 Chromebook recommendations but lists a $700 US base MSRP, so a sub-$600 purchase depends on a sale rather than its stated base price. Verify the current configuration and price. RTINGS

Rank #3
Apple 2026 MacBook Air 13-inch Laptop with M5 chip: Built for AI, 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display, 16GB Unified Memory, 512GB SSD, 12MP Center Stage Camera, Touch ID, Wi-Fi 7; Sky Blue

  • UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Air delivers incredible battery life with amazing performance, so you can power through a full day of classes without worrying about plugging in.
  • A BRILLIANT 13.6-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.

Before choosing ChromeOS, identify the specific applications you rely on. ChromeOS does not have every application available on Windows or macOS; if a required program is restricted to one of those systems, this Chromebook is not a substitute for it. TechRadar

How to compare these options with a refurbished Air

  1. Check application compatibility. Decide whether you need macOS, Windows or whether browser-based work and ChromeOS apps cover your needs.
  2. Match memory to your workload. The Neo’s documented 8GB is fixed; RTINGS also flags an 8GB XPS configuration. Confirm the memory in the exact Dell listing rather than assuming every configuration is identical.
  3. Compare the final price. Treat Apple’s Neo figures as announced US prices, the Dell student price as eligibility-dependent, and the Acer’s under-$600 fit as sale-dependent. Compare like-for-like storage and memory where the listings allow.
  4. For a refurbished Air, inspect the specific unit. Compare configuration, condition, warranty and return terms. A refurbished label alone does not tell you whether a particular listing is good value.

Apple’s US refurbished store listing reviewed here showed a 13-inch M5 MacBook Air with 24GB of memory and a 4TB SSD for $2,799, and states that Apple Certified Refurbished products carry a one-year limited warranty. That is one high-spec listing, not a typical price for an affordable refurbished Air or a market benchmark. Apple Certified Refurbished
