If what you liked about FINAL FANTASY XVI was its real-time swordplay, dramatic fantasy story, or spectacular abilities, the best next game depends on which of those mattered most. Tales of Arise is the closest genre neighbor in this short list; ELDEN RING is a darker alternative, not a story or combat equivalent. Steam Deck compatibility labels can change, so check each live Steam listing before you install or buy.
What does “like Final Fantasy XVI” mean?
Square Enix’s Steam listing classifies FINAL FANTASY XVI as a single-player action RPG. Its story follows Clive Rosfield on a revenge-driven journey involving Ifrit, while its combat highlights swordplay and Eikonic abilities. The game also offers two ways to approach its action: Story-focused mode is recommended for players less comfortable with action games who want to focus on the story; Action-focused mode gives players control over every action. Those details point to distinct reasons to choose a follow-up: a story-led fantasy adventure, real-time action, a darker fantasy setting, or a greater appetite for challenge. No recommendation below matches all of those elements at once.

Action RPG recommendations
| Game | Why it may suit a Final Fantasy XVI fan | Important difference | Steam Deck listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tales of Arise | Steam describes a fantasy adventure with a diverse cast, a combat system, and a story, making it a nearby story-led action RPG option. | The available store information does not establish that its combat feels like FINAL FANTASY XVI. | Steam displayed Verified on the listing checked for this article; confirm the current label on the live Steam page. |
| ELDEN RING | Bandai Namco describes it as an action RPG in an authentic dark-fantasy world. The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion adds weapons, equipment, weapon skills, magic, enemies, boss encounters, and plotlines. | Choose it for dark fantasy and action-RPG play, not because it is established as a close match for FINAL FANTASY XVI’s story or combat. | Not established here. Check the live Steam listing for its current compatibility label. |
Choose Tales of Arise for another story-led fantasy adventure
If your favorite part of FINAL FANTASY XVI was following characters through a fantasy story while taking part in action-RPG combat, Tales of Arise is the more direct starting point among these two recommendations. That is a match in broad genre and story emphasis—not a claim that its pacing, combat, or presentation reproduces Clive’s adventure. Its Steam page describes a diverse cast, a story, and a combat system, and the listing checked for this article showed the Steam Deck Verified label.

Choose ELDEN RING for a darker fantasy direction
ELDEN RING makes more sense if the appeal is fantasy action and a darker world rather than a similar revenge narrative. Bandai Namco’s description of Shadow of the Erdtree points to additional equipment, skills, magic, enemies, bosses, and plotlines, but that expansion information does not make it a story-equivalent recommendation. The current Steam Deck compatibility label is not established here, so verify it on the game’s store page rather than assuming it.
How to read Steam Deck compatibility labels
Valve says the first tab in the Steam Store shows only games that are great on Steam Deck. Its compatibility review process is ongoing as games and updates are published, so a label is a point-in-time signal—not a permanent guarantee. Read Valve’s explanation on the Steam Deck Verified page, then check the individual game listing for the current label. A Verified result for one title does not establish the status of another.

What the Final Fantasy XVI PC requirements tell you—and what they don’t
Square Enix’s Steam listing gives the Windows PC version a 170 GB available-storage requirement and requires an SSD. It also lists a minimum expectation of 30 FPS at 720p and a recommended expectation of 60 FPS at 1080p. These are the PC requirements shown on the game’s Steam page; they are not measured Steam Deck results or a storage recommendation for the handheld. They establish nothing about Deck frame rate, graphics settings, battery life, or smoothness.
