There is no single best action RPG for every PlayStation player: the right pick depends on which part of a favorite game you want to experience again. Choose Dragon’s Dogma 2 for fantasy exploration and flexible party roles, Rise of the Ronin for historical samurai action and adjustable difficulty, or Granblue Fantasy: Relink for real-time party combat and co-op. These are feature-based matches, not a universal ranking.
Start with the experience you want to repeat
“Action RPG” covers games with very different settings, combat and ways to play. A useful comparison starts with your preference: an open world to roam, room to change combat roles, a historical setting, a party to fight alongside, online co-op, or selectable difficulty.

PlayStation describes Dragon’s Dogma 2 as “A single-player, narrative-driven action-RPG that lets players choose their own experience.” Its fantasy journey spans Vermund and Battahl, and its vocation choices include Fighter, Archer, Thief, Mage and Trickster.

Why it may feel familiar
If what you want to repeat is exploring a fantasy world while experimenting with combat roles, the vocation system is the clearest match. You can customize a main Pawn, then hire two additional Pawns; PlayStation says these can include Pawns from other players online. The game’s combat descriptions also emphasize responding to enemy tactics, exploiting weaknesses and using the environment.
What to know before choosing it
Pawns are companions, not evidence of multiplayer co-op. PlayStation identifies the game as single-player, so choose another option here if playing the story online with friends is essential.
Rank #2
- Overhauled Character Creator – Create more lifelike characters with improved facial detail, body shapes, and visual fidelity
- Shared-Progression Cross-Play Cooperative Play – Both players now save all main story progress as long as they’re on the same “New Game” and have defeated a similar number of main bosses within one. Both players retains all loot, 100 percent vigor, and can revive each other in all online sessions.
- Free Friend’s Pass – Invite any friend to join your adventure in online co-op even if they don’t own the game. Friends keep loot and character progress, plus get full offline access to the tutorial and character creator
- Revamped Combat and Movement – V2.0 adds smoother animations, better weapon response, refined lock-on, improved evasions, and new grievous strike prompts
For historical action and adjustable challenge: Rise of the Ronin
Rise of the Ronin is set in 19th-century Japan. PlayStation calls it a “combat-focused open-world action RPG” and highlights close-quarters weapons, period firearms, story decisions and alliances that affect how events unfold.

Pick it if you want an open-world structure but prefer a historical setting to fantasy, or if changing weapons and making story choices are central to the appeal. Its difficulty modes can be changed at any time, according to PlayStation, making it the most clearly documented option here for someone who wants to adjust challenge as they play.
Rank #3
- Harsh Open World: Using the power of PlayStation 4 and unreal engine 4, days one offers an incredibly realistic and detailed open world experience. But be careful— day and night cycles, all affect gameplay and enemy behavior
- Brutal Sandbox Combat: Perfect your gameplay with an endless combination of strategy and play in every situation. Craft customized items using pieces and parts found in the field, from brutal melee weapons to traps and more
- Compelling Story: At its core, days gone is about survivors and what makes them human: desperation, loss, madness, betrayal, friendship, brotherhood, regret, love and hope. It’s about how hope never dies
- Play as Deacon St.John, a bounty hunter facing a brutal struggle for survival while searching for a reason to live
Playing with friends
PlayStation says up to three players can play story missions together online. PlayStation Plus is required for online play. That co-op is a specific fit for shared story missions, rather than a reason to assume every part of the game is designed around multiplayer.
For real-time party combat and co-op: Granblue Fantasy: Relink
PlayStation’s feature on action RPGs describes Granblue Fantasy: Relink as a fully 3D action RPG built around a four-character party. Its party members have distinct skills, and its listed features include real-time combat, loot, solo play and co-op for up to four players.
Rank #4
- Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
- Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
- Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
- Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.
Why it may feel familiar
Choose it if the part you want to repeat is coordinating a party in fast, real-time battles, or if co-op matters more than roaming a large open world. The cited feature establishes those play options, but it is not a head-to-head comparison with the other games on this list.
Considering Elden Ring for exploration?
Elden Ring is another candidate for players seeking challenging fantasy exploration. However, the PlayStation game page available for this comparison did not provide substantive feature details, so this guide cannot make a detailed mechanics comparison or place it above the three better-documented matches. Consider it only if that exploration-led direction is what you want, and check its current PlayStation listing for your region.
