Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor clearer streaming audio, start with absorptive panels around 50 mm (2 inches) thick, check their published absorption data, and place them near the strongest reflections around your speaking position. Panels can reduce room echo; they do not soundproof a room or block noise coming from outside it.
What acoustic panels can—and cannot—fix
Acoustic panels absorb some sound reflections inside a room, helping spoken audio sound less reverberant. They do not isolate a room from traffic, neighbors, household noise, or sound traveling through walls. If outside noise is the main problem, panels alone are not the remedy.

Shure makes the related point that “a microphone cannot improve the acoustic environment in which it is placed.” A microphone and its position matter, but neither can erase room reflections by itself. Shure’s guide to critical distance and microphone placement explains how direct and reverberant speech relate.
What to look for when choosing panels
Absorption data, not just marketing claims
Look for a published Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) or frequency-band absorption data, and check the context in which it was measured. NRC is a useful general comparison, but it does not describe performance at every frequency or guarantee a particular result in your room. Google’s room-design guidance uses NRC 0.7 in its own treatment recommendations; that is a reference point, not a universal streaming-room specification. Google Room Design Guide: Acoustic Finishes.

Thickness and construction
Google’s guidance identifies at least 50 mm (about 2 inches) as a wall-treatment thickness associated with achieving NRC 0.7 in its context. That makes 50 mm a reasonable general starting point when comparing absorptive panels, not a guarantee that any panel of that thickness will perform identically. Thin decorative foam should not be assumed to solve every frequency or room-acoustics problem.
Dimensions, coverage, and mounting
Compare the dimensions and quantity of panels with the reflective areas you can actually treat. Check the attachment method, weight, and whether your wall or ceiling can support the planned installation. Fabric, color, and finish may matter for a visible streaming background, but appearance alone says nothing about acoustic performance.

Google’s guide recommends total acoustic wall treatment of at least 50% of room floor area plus an additional 5 m², with NRC of at least 0.7, for its room-design use case. Do not treat that coverage figure as a prescription for every home streaming room; room size, furnishings, microphone position, and the surfaces causing the audible reflections all matter.
Where to place panels around your streaming position
Prioritize reflection paths rather than decorating a wall at random. Google recommends treating adjacent walls and beginning around seated head height. A vendor placement guide also emphasizes the wall facing the microphone and nearby side walls, but the right arrangement depends on the room and microphone orientation. Acoustic Sound Panels’ placement guide is vendor guidance, not an independent test.

- Set up the microphone and chair first. Use the position you actually stream from; moving either later changes the relevant reflection paths.
- Identify nearby hard surfaces. Pay attention to the wall in front of the microphone and adjacent side walls, then consider other reflective surfaces near the speaking position.
- Treat the strongest nearby reflections. If you can treat only one wall, prioritize the surface most directly involved in reflections reaching the microphone. The best choice depends on mic orientation and room layout; there is no universally correct wall.
- Start around seated head height. Extend or reposition treatment based on what remains audible and which surfaces are available, rather than assuming a fixed panel count will suit every room.
- Recheck the actual recording. Listen from the streaming microphone’s perspective after treatment. If echo remains, reconsider the untreated reflective surfaces and microphone position.
How panels work with microphone placement
Shure defines critical distance as the point where direct speech and reverberant speech are equal in intensity. A close, considered microphone position can make direct speech more prominent, while treating the room reduces reflections; these approaches work together rather than replacing one another. See Shure’s explanation for its microphone-placement guidance.
How to compare common panel options
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Absorption evidence | Published NRC or frequency-band absorption data and any stated test context | A rating is more useful than an unsupported claim, though it cannot promise the result in your room. |
| Thickness | Whether the panel is around 50 mm (2 inches) thick or more | Google’s guide associates at least 50 mm with its NRC 0.7 guidance; this is not a universal performance guarantee. |
| Coverage | Panel dimensions and quantity compared with your available reflective surfaces | Placement and room conditions matter more than buying a generic bundle by count. |
| Installation | Mounting method, weight, and suitable wall or ceiling locations | The planned treatment needs to be practical and secure in your room. |
| Finish | Fabric, color, and appearance | Useful for a visible set, but not proof of absorption performance. |

When a room-acoustics target does not transfer directly
Cisco’s room-acoustics material gives an RT60 target of 0.3–0.4 seconds for its telepresence and meeting-room context. That figure is not a universal target for streamers or a substitute for listening to your own room. Cisco room-acoustics guidance.
