Best accessories for the ROG Xbox Ally X: docks, chargers and protective cases

The best accessory depends on the job: choose a dock for a monitor and USB peripherals, a USB-C Power Delivery charger for a second or replacement power source, and a fitted case for travel protection. The ROG Xbox Ally X has two USB-C ports, so compatibility with both connectors, display output and physical clearance matter more than a generic “USB-C accessory” label.

Quick recommendations by use case

Start with the accessory that solves your immediate problem rather than buying a bundle of overlapping hardware. A dock is the most useful upgrade for a desk or living-room setup. A charger is useful when the original adapter is missing, when you need one in another location, or when you want to charge while travelling. A case is worthwhile only when its cutouts and internal shape are explicitly made for the ROG Xbox Ally X.

Protection in a bag or while travelling Protective case made for the Ally X Explicit ROG Xbox Ally X or RC73XA fit, joystick and trigger clearance, access to both USB-C ports and dock-cable clearance A generic handheld case is not enough; one third-party case’s measurements were not independently verified.

Know the Ally X ports before choosing accessories

ASUS lists two USB-C connectors on the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X: one USB4 Type-C port and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. The launch specification describes USB4 support with DisplayPort 2.1, Power Delivery 3.0 and Thunderbolt 4 compatibility, while the second USB-C port supports DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0. That combination is why a single dock or charger can be useful, but it also means a case or connector that blocks the wrong area can make an otherwise suitable accessory unusable.

What the port specification means in practice

  • Display output: a compatible USB-C dock can send video to an external display. The dock still needs an output connector such as HDMI, and the display, cable and dock must all support the resolution and refresh mode you want.
  • Power delivery: PD 3.0 identifies the charging protocol. It does not, by itself, state a measured charging time or guarantee a particular wattage. Use the charger maker’s published output and the Ally X’s supplied-adapter guidance for your region.
  • Thunderbolt compatibility: the USB4 port is described as Thunderbolt 4 compatible. A Thunderbolt-branded peripheral may still require its own driver, cable or power arrangement; compatibility is not the same as every device operating at its maximum specification.
  • Two possible connection points: a dock or charger should be tested with the port position that leaves the least strain on the handheld. A case must leave both connectors reachable, especially the upper USB-C area identified in ASUS’s port layout.

Do not assume that every USB-C hub supports video or charging simply because its plug fits. Look for explicit DisplayPort Alt Mode or HDMI output information, USB Power Delivery input details and a stated compatibility list.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Best dock approach: a powered HDMI and USB expansion station

What the ROG Bulwark Dock 2025 DG300 is intended to do

Xbox Wire describes the ROG Bulwark Dock 2025 DG300 as a portable dock for the Xbox Ally that powers the handheld, sends video to a large screen through HDMI and connects peripherals through two USB-A ports. Those functions directly match the common desktop use case: connect one HDMI cable to a monitor or television, attach a keyboard and mouse or another USB accessory, and keep the handheld powered through the dock.

The announcement labeled the DG300 “Coming Soon.” Treat that as an announcement status rather than proof that stock, pricing or regional distribution is available today. Check the current product listing and the contents of the package in your country before planning a purchase around it. The announcement does not establish an Ethernet port, a specific USB speed for each USB-A socket, a supplied power adapter or a maximum charging wattage, so those details should be confirmed from the live listing.

Who should buy a dock

  • Desk users: a dock lets the Ally X become a small desktop system without repeatedly plugging several devices into the handheld.
  • TV players: HDMI output is simpler than trying to find a display with a suitable USB-C input and cable.
  • Peripheral users: two USB-A ports are enough for a keyboard and mouse, or for one input device plus a USB drive, provided the connected devices do not exceed the dock’s power budget.
  • Travellers: a portable dock can replace carrying separate display and USB adapters, but its size and whether a power adapter is included affect the real packing benefit.

Dock buying checklist

  1. Confirm HDMI output. The connector must match the monitor or television. If you need a particular resolution or refresh rate, verify that capability in the dock’s specification rather than inferring it from the HDMI label.
  2. Count the ports you will actually use. The DG300 announcement specifies dual USB-A ports. If you need Ethernet, an SD card reader, more USB ports or a second display, choose a model that lists those functions explicitly.
  3. Check power input and pass-through wording. A dock advertised as powering the handheld may require a separate USB-C charger. Confirm whether the adapter is included and whether charging continues while HDMI and USB devices are connected.
  4. Check cable placement. A short captive cable can be convenient on a desk but awkward with a protective case. A detachable cable is easier to replace, but adds another item to pack.
  5. Match the case and dock together. If the case covers the lower edge or changes the angle of the USB-C plug, the handheld may not seat correctly. Look for a case listing that says the dock connector remains accessible.

Connecting a dock for the first time

  1. Place the dock on a stable surface with ventilation around the handheld and dock electronics.
  2. Connect the dock’s power input to a USB-C PD charger if the dock requires an external adapter. Use the charger and cable ratings specified by the dock manufacturer.
  3. Connect HDMI from the dock to the powered-off or active display, then select the display’s matching HDMI input.
  4. Attach USB-A peripherals one at a time. Start with the keyboard or mouse, then add storage or other accessories so a power or compatibility problem is easy to identify.
  5. Connect the dock to the Ally X using the supplied or specified USB-C cable. If there is no picture, unplug and reconnect the cable at both ends before changing software settings.
  6. On Windows, open the display settings and choose whether to duplicate, extend or show the picture only on the external display. Set the resolution and refresh rate supported by the display and dock.

Dock problems and fixes

  • No image: confirm the display input, reseat HDMI, test a different HDMI cable and try the other USB-C port if the dock’s documentation allows it. A cable that supports charging but not high-speed data can also prevent video.
  • Image appears but peripherals do not: disconnect all USB devices, reconnect the dock, then add peripherals individually. Bus-powered storage and other high-draw devices may need a powered hub or their own adapter.
  • The Ally X is not charging through the dock: check that a charger is connected to the dock’s power input, that the charger supports USB PD 3.0 as required by the dock, and that the dock actually specifies power pass-through. Do not treat the HDMI connection as a power source.
  • The case prevents connection: remove the case for a fit test. If the dock works bare but not with the case installed, use a case with a recessed or extended port opening rather than forcing the plug.

Choosing a USB-C PD 3.0 charger

Start with what ASUS actually specifies

ASUS documents Power Delivery 3.0 support on both USB-C connections of the ROG Xbox Ally X. ASUS also notes that charger inclusion varies by country, region and model. Therefore, two otherwise identical retail packages may not contain the same adapter, and a buyer should inspect the box contents for the exact market before ordering a second charger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PD 3.0 is a negotiation standard between the charger and the device. It is not a promise of a measured charge time, and the available charging rate can depend on the charger’s output profile, cable, system load, battery state and regional package. No independent charging-wattage or charging-time test establishes a universal figure for the Ally X, so avoid listings that present an unverified time or wattage as guaranteed performance.

What to compare between chargers

Specification Why it matters How to evaluate it
USB Power Delivery 3.0 Provides the protocol documented for the Ally X’s USB-C ports. Look for explicit PD 3.0 wording in the manufacturer’s specifications, not only “fast charging.”
Output capacity Determines how much power the charger can offer to the handheld and any additional connected device. Use the maker’s stated output and profiles. Do not infer a precise Ally X charging rate from the protocol name alone.
Port arrangement A multi-port charger may divide its available output when another device is connected. Read the simultaneous-output table and identify the port that provides the required profile.
Cable The cable must carry power at the required level and fit around a case or dock. Check whether a cable is included, its length and its published power rating.
Regional plug and package Electrical plugs and included accessories vary by market. Buy the version intended for your country and verify the box contents before opening the package.

When a second charger is worthwhile

  • Keep one charger at a desk and another in a travel bag so the Ally X is not moved every time you leave home.
  • Use a spare when the original adapter was not included with your regional model.
  • Choose a multi-port unit when you need to charge the handheld and a phone or controller, but confirm how its output is shared.
  • Pair a charger with a dock only after checking whether the dock requires a separate adapter. Otherwise you may buy two accessories that cannot provide the intended pass-through arrangement.

Safe charger setup

  1. Check the charger label for USB PD 3.0 and the manufacturer’s output profiles.
  2. Use a cable whose power rating is stated and whose connector fits without bending against the Ally X or its case.
  3. Plug the charger into a wall outlet, connect the cable to the charger, then connect the other end to the Ally X.
  4. Confirm the Windows charging indicator appears. If charging stops when a dock or peripheral is attached, compare the combined load with the charger’s simultaneous-output specification.
  5. Keep the charger and cable ventilated and undamaged. Replace a cable with frayed insulation, loose connectors or heat damage.

Protective cases: fit is more important than branding

The Ally X’s two USB-C connectors make case geometry unusually important. Choose a listing that explicitly names the ROG Xbox Ally X or the RC73XA model. A case described only as fitting a similarly shaped handheld may cover a port, press on a trigger, interfere with a joystick or prevent a dock plug from reaching the connector.

Case fit checklist

  • Model identification: the listing should state ROG Xbox Ally X compatibility, ideally with the RC73XA identifier. Do not rely on photographs alone.
  • Top USB-C clearance: inspect the opening around the upper USB-C connectors in the official port layout. The plug should enter straight without rubbing the case edge.
  • Both ports: verify access to the USB4 port and the USB 3.2 Gen 2 port. A case that leaves only one usable may defeat the dock or charger setup you planned.
  • Controls: check that the shell does not touch the joystick caps, bumpers, triggers or rear controls through their full travel.
  • Dock compatibility: look for explicit dock-cable clearance if you intend to leave the case installed. Otherwise expect to remove the case when using a tight-fitting dock.
  • Protection coverage: decide whether you need a slim shell for scratch protection, a raised lip around the display, or a thicker travel case that also protects the controls.

One third-party case’s dimensions were not verified in the available evidence, so no particular case model can be declared a guaranteed fit. Treat measurements supplied by a seller as a starting point and check the return policy in case the connector opening or control clearance is wrong.

Choosing between slim and rugged designs

Design Advantages Trade-offs to check
Slim snap-on shell Low weight, easy access to controls and usually the least bulk in a bag. May leave the screen, triggers or joystick tops exposed; port cutouts can be shallow.
Rugged protective shell More impact absorption and a larger protective lip around the display. Extra thickness can block a dock connector or make the upper USB-C port difficult to reach.
Folio or travel case Can protect the entire handheld and hold cables or a charger. It may be a carrying case rather than a fitted shell, so the device can still move inside unless it has a dedicated insert.

Installing and testing a case

  1. Power off the Ally X and disconnect every cable.
  2. Compare the case openings with the handheld before snapping it into place. Locate both USB-C ports, the triggers, bumpers, joysticks and ventilation openings.
  3. Install the case without forcing the shell over a control or connector.
  4. Move each joystick through a full circle and press every trigger and bumper. Nothing should bind, scrape or remain partially depressed.
  5. Insert a USB-C charger straight into each accessible port. The plug should not be pushed sideways by the case.
  6. If you use a dock, test the dock cable with the case installed. Stop if the plug does not seat fully; a partially inserted USB-C connector can disconnect under movement.
  7. Check that ventilation openings remain clear during a demanding game. A case should protect the device without sealing its cooling paths.

Accessory combinations that make sense

Desk setup

Use a dock with HDMI, two USB-A ports and a suitable power input. Connect the monitor, keyboard and mouse to the dock, then connect the dock to the Ally X. This is the cleanest arrangement when the handheld stays on a desk and you want one connection to attach or remove it.

Travel setup

Carry a PD 3.0 charger, a correctly rated USB-C cable and a slim case. Add a compact dock only if you regularly use hotel televisions or USB peripherals; otherwise the dock adds weight without solving a daily problem. Confirm the charger’s regional plug and the case’s port openings before travelling.

Best Value
Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display | 85W Max PD, 1 Powered USB-C 5Gbps & 2 Powered USB-A 3.0 5Gbps Data Ports, for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Dell and More (Black)

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Protected living-room setup

Use a fitted case that leaves the dock connector clear, then connect the dock to HDMI and the television. Keep the charger connected to the dock if its documentation specifies pass-through. If the case requires removal, consider whether the extra handling outweighs its protection benefit.

Minimal replacement setup

If your regional package already includes a suitable adapter and you do not use external displays, buy the case first and postpone the dock or second charger. The Ally X’s built-in ports can handle charging and compatible accessories without requiring a hub for ordinary handheld play.

Final buying checklist

  1. Verify the exact handheld model, preferably the ROG Xbox Ally X identifier RC73XA.
  2. For a dock, confirm HDMI output, the number and type of USB ports, power input and whether the power adapter is included.
  3. For a charger, confirm USB PD 3.0, the manufacturer’s output profiles, cable inclusion and your region’s plug.
  4. For a case, confirm explicit Ally X compatibility, joystick and trigger clearance, both USB-C openings and dock-cable access.
  5. Check package contents because ASUS says charger inclusion varies by country, region and model.
  6. Ignore claimed charging times or wattages that are not backed by a stated manufacturer specification or test conditions.
  7. Test every accessory within its return period, starting with video output, charging and physical fit before relying on it for travel.
