Best Accessibility and Difficulty Settings for Soulslike Games on PS5

The most effective setup for a Soulslike on PS5 combines console-level accessibility controls, the individual game’s own options, and—when a standard controller is physically limiting—an adaptive control layout. Start in Settings > Accessibility, then inspect the game’s PlayStation Store Accessibility Tags and test its in-game menu before choosing a character or committing to a long playthrough. These tools can improve readability, reduce fatigue, remap difficult inputs, and provide audio alternatives, but they do not automatically turn a fixed-combat game into an easy mode.

What accessibility can and cannot change in a Soulslike

Soulslike games commonly make timing, camera control, stamina management and pattern recognition central to combat. Accessibility settings can remove barriers around those demands without necessarily changing the enemies or damage values. A remapped dodge button may make a physically difficult input reachable; larger text may make an item description readable; disabling vibration may prevent sensory overload. None of those changes guarantees an easier boss fight.

Difficulty assistance can take several forms, and a title may offer one, several or none of them:

  • A formal difficulty selector: an explicit easy, normal or hard choice, if the developer provides one.
  • Game-speed controls: a slower or adjustable pace that gives more time for reactions.
  • Simplified actions: alternatives to rapid button presses, motion gestures or complex quick-time inputs.
  • Co-op or assist mechanics: another player or an in-game system can help with encounters.
  • Build flexibility: respecs, ranged options, defensive equipment or other systems can let you approach the same challenge differently.

Do not treat any one of these as a universal “easy mode.” Sony’s Accessibility Tags identify supported features, but the exact timing, availability and effect must be checked in the game itself.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the PS5 before launching the game

System controls are useful because they can apply before you reach a game’s own settings menu. Open Settings > Accessibility on the PS5. Sony groups controller settings, display and text settings, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, mono audio, haptic feedback and zoom in this area.

Remap the inputs you use most

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Select Controllers, then Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller.
  3. Move actions such as attack, dodge, interact or lock-on to inputs you can reach reliably.
  4. Write down the original layout or save a screenshot so you can restore it when switching games.

Remapping at the system level changes the signal sent by the controller. A game may still display the original button icon, so keep the new layout visible until the mapping becomes familiar. If the title has its own remapping menu, use that instead when you need on-screen prompts to match your hands; otherwise, the PS5 mapping is a practical fallback.

Reduce vibration and adaptive-trigger resistance

Continuous haptics and trigger resistance can cause fatigue or sensory discomfort during repeated combat. In the PS5 accessibility controls, reduce or disable haptic feedback as needed. A game can also expose separate switches. Demon’s Souls, for example, explicitly supports playing without controller vibration and without adaptive-trigger effects, so those sensations do not have to be part of the combat loop.

Improve visual comfort and text legibility

Test the console’s zoom, text-size and bold-text controls, along with high contrast, color correction, inverted colors and reduced motion. These are system-level tools and may not alter every game scene or application identically, so verify the result in an inventory, a dark corridor and a boss arena rather than judging from the home screen.

  • Use zoom when small item descriptions or menu labels are the barrier.
  • Try bold text or a larger text setting when thin fonts disappear against the background.
  • Use high contrast or color correction when enemy effects, item rarity or navigation markers blend together.
  • Enable reduced motion if camera movement, transitions or visual effects cause discomfort.

A game may provide its own brightness, camera, field-of-view or subtitle controls. Prefer the in-game option when it exists because it is designed for that title’s rendering and interface.

Configure audio, captions and the screen reader

PS5 accessibility includes a screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription and mono audio. Mono output can make dialogue and effects easier to hear when one-sided hearing is an issue, while a screen reader can read compatible system text. Game-level subtitle coverage remains title-specific: a console screen reader cannot automatically create subtitles for every spoken line or menu.

Check whether a game offers separate master, effects, music and dialogue volumes. Keeping effects audible while lowering music can make attack cues easier to distinguish, but the best balance depends on your hearing and headphones. If you use online co-op, chat transcription can provide an alternative to voice communication where supported.

Use PlayStation Store Accessibility Tags to compare games

Before buying or starting a Soulslike, compare its Store listing rather than assuming that genre conventions predict its options. Sony introduced more than 50 Accessibility Tags across six categories at launch in 2023 and reported more than 700 tagged games in a 2024 update. Tag coverage is broad, but it is not a promise that every Soulslike has the same controls or difficulty aids.

  1. From the PS5 Games home, open PlayStation Store and select the game.
  2. Press Triangle, or open the listing’s side panel, to view its accessibility features.
  3. Compare the tags across visual readability, audio alternatives, subtitles or captions, control remapping and sensitivity, gameplay or difficulty aids, and online communication.
  4. Install the game and confirm the same options in its own settings. Check the menu labels, timing and readability in actual play.
  5. Note whether assistance is always available, selectable at any time, or restricted to a new save. Store tags describe feature categories; they do not establish a universal rule for when a setting can be changed.

Tags that matter most for Soulslike play

Player need Useful tag or setting What to verify in the game
Difficulty and reaction time Difficulty settings, game speed, simplified quick-time events, alternatives to rapid presses Whether combat speed changes, which actions are covered, and whether the choice can be changed mid-save
Hand reach or fatigue Button remapping, stick sensitivity, alternatives to motion controls Whether every combat action can be moved and whether prompts update to the new layout
Reading small or low-contrast text Text or visual-accessibility tags Subtitle size, menu scaling, contrast and whether item descriptions remain legible during play
Hearing dialogue or effects Subtitles, captions, mono audio, individual volume controls Which characters and sounds are captioned and whether dialogue, effects and music can be balanced separately
Sensory comfort Reduced motion, no vibration, no adaptive-trigger effects Whether the option covers menus, camera effects and all controller feedback, not just one activity
Online communication Chat transcription and communication alternatives Support in the game’s co-op or messaging features, not only in the PS5 interface

Demon’s Souls: a documented PS5 reference point

Demon’s Souls is a useful example because its PlayStation Store listing spells out several controls. The listing identifies it as a PS5 title with the following accessibility features:

Area Documented option Practical use
Audio Individual volume controls Balance dialogue, effects and music to make important cues easier to hear.
Audio output Mono audio and 3D audio Choose a compatible output that suits your hearing setup; 3D audio requires compatible headphones.
Text Basic subtitles Provides subtitle support for the main story and main characters, rather than guaranteeing captions for every sound.
Camera and controls Basic stick inversion Reverse a stick axis if the default camera or aiming direction is uncomfortable.
Motion and touch Play without motion controls and without touch controls Avoid gestures or touch-pad actions when those inputs are inaccessible or undesirable.
Controller feedback Play without controller vibration and without adaptive-trigger effects Remove haptic sensations and trigger resistance that cause discomfort or fatigue.

The same official game page describes the remake as retaining a “brutal challenge” and offering 4K and high-frame-rate modes, haptics and Tempest 3D AudioTech on compatible headphones. Its Store listing does not show a selectable easy or normal difficulty mode. Therefore, use the accessibility controls to make play more comfortable, but do not buy it expecting a formal easy-mode switch.

How to choose a Soulslike when difficulty is your main concern

Start with the exact barrier you need to remove, then look for the corresponding evidence. A game with excellent remapping may still have fixed combat speed; a game with an easy selector may have small text or no subtitle controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reaction time is the barrier

  • Look for a formal difficulty selector or a game-speed tag.
  • Check for alternatives to rapid presses and simplified quick-time events.
  • Confirm whether the assistance affects combat itself or only non-combat interactions.
  • Find out whether the setting can be changed after starting the save.

If controller reach or dexterity is the barrier

  • Prioritize button remapping and stick-sensitivity controls.
  • Check whether lock-on, dodge, attack and interact can all be assigned to reachable inputs.
  • Disable motion, touch-pad or rapid-press requirements when alternatives are available.
  • Test a short tutorial or early area before investing in a long character build.

If reading or vision is the barrier

  • Look for subtitle support, text-size options, high contrast and color controls.
  • Use PS5 zoom, bold text and color correction as a second layer.
  • Inspect inventory text and status icons in actual gameplay; a readable title screen does not prove that every menu is readable.

If hearing or sensory input is the barrier

  • Check for individual volume sliders, mono audio, captions and dialogue subtitles.
  • Turn off vibration and adaptive-trigger effects before a long session if those sensations are tiring.
  • Verify whether important combat sounds are captioned; basic subtitles may cover only story dialogue and main characters.

Adaptive hardware: when the DualSense layout is the limiting factor

When a standard DualSense arrangement cannot be reached or held comfortably, software remapping may not be enough. Sony describes the Access controller for PS5 as a highly customizable adaptive controller kit. Its documented options include swappable button and stick configurations, 360-degree orientation, flat-surface use and an AMPS-pattern mounting option.

Those features let you place controls around the movement and range of motion that work for you rather than forcing every action into the standard handheld shape. The controller is a hardware option, not a promise that a particular Soulslike supports every possible configuration. Check the game’s Store tags and test the required inputs with the PS5 setup before beginning a full playthrough.

A practical first-session checklist

  1. Prepare the console: open Settings > Accessibility; set controller assignments, text and display aids, audio alternatives and reduced haptics.
  2. Inspect the Store listing: open the title’s Accessibility Tags and record the features relevant to your barrier.
  3. Open the game menu: locate controls, camera, audio, subtitles, display and gameplay sections before starting a character.
  4. Test a safe area: read an item description, move the camera, lock on, dodge, attack, interact and listen for an audio cue.
  5. Check persistence: confirm which settings survive a restart and whether difficulty or speed choices can be changed later.
  6. Adjust one variable at a time: changing several controls simultaneously makes it difficult to identify which setting solved a problem.
  7. Save a personal layout: keep a short note of your assignments and preferred audio, subtitle and haptic settings for the next session.

Common problems and fixes

“The Store says remapping is supported, but I still cannot move one action.”

Store tags describe a supported feature category, not necessarily unrestricted remapping of every input. Check the in-game control menu for per-action limits. If the game does not offer the assignment you need, use the PS5’s Custom Button Assignments as a system-level alternative and accept that its on-screen prompts may retain the original labels.

“The text is larger, but item descriptions are still hard to read.”

Use the game’s own text or contrast controls first, then test PS5 zoom, bold text and high contrast. Some system display tools do not affect every scene or application identically, so check the inventory and equipment screens where the problem occurs.

“I turned on subtitles, but important sounds are missing.”

Basic subtitles may cover story dialogue and main characters without captioning environmental or combat audio. Keep effects audible, try mono audio if appropriate, and look for a separate captions setting rather than assuming subtitles describe every sound.

“The game is accessible, but still too difficult.”

Accessibility and difficulty are separate questions. Revisit the Store tags for difficulty settings, game speed, simplified actions and rapid-press alternatives. If none is listed, the game may preserve a fixed combat challenge even while offering strong visual, audio or controller options.

“Vibration or triggers make long sessions painful.”

Disable haptics and adaptive-trigger effects in the PS5 controls or in the game. Test both locations because a title may override or supplement the console preference. Demon’s Souls documents separate no-vibration and no-adaptive-trigger options.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

There is no authoritative, current genre-wide matrix covering every Soulslike available on PS5. Accessibility Tags provide a common vocabulary, while each game’s menus determine the actual implementation. Verify a title’s listing and in-game settings before making a comparative claim about the “easiest” Soulslike.

Availability, tag coverage, hardware stock, discounts and PlayStation Plus inclusion can change by region and date. Treat those as current-store questions rather than permanent specifications. The reliable decision is to match your specific barrier to a documented setting, test it in play, and use adaptive hardware when the physical layout—not the game’s combat design—is the obstacle.
