For a prerecorded program played into YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for a normal two-channel mix. Use AAC 5.1 at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz only for a genuine surround mix whose channel mapping and encoder support 5.1. These are YouTube’s published Live encoder recommendations, applied to prerecorded playback; YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate recommendation for prerecorded Live sources.
Recommended AAC settings for prerecorded YouTube Live
“Prerecorded” here means a finished video being played through an encoder into a YouTube Live stream. It does not mean uploading the file as an ordinary YouTube video. For Live ingestion, use the settings in the first two rows:

| Live workflow and program | Audio codec | Channel layout | Sample rate | YouTube-recommended audio bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS, ordinary prerecorded program | AAC | Stereo (2.0) | 44.1 kHz | 128 Kbps |
| RTMP/RTMPS, actual surround program | AAC | 5.1 (six channels) | 48 kHz | 384 Kbps |
| HLS, actual surround program | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | 5.1 | 48 kHz | 384 Kbps |
The settings are platform recommendations, not evidence that choosing a higher bitrate improves the delivered stream. YouTube’s Live encoder guidance gives 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1; its 5.1 guidance specifies 48 kHz for the surround layout. YouTube’s Live encoder settings and 5.1 surround guidance are the relevant references.

Choose stereo or 5.1 based on the actual mix
Use stereo for a standard two-channel program
For music, talk, or other content mixed for two channels, send a conventional left-and-right stereo pair. Stereo is the documented default for an ordinary program; adding channels simply because a file or project has them does not make the program a suitable 5.1 stream.

Use 5.1 only when the full chain supports it
YouTube describes 5.1 as five full-bandwidth channels—front left, center, front right, surround left, and surround right—plus a low-frequency-effects channel. Preserve that assignment from the source through playback and encoding. YouTube warns that other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo, and its guidance does not specify a universal downmix matrix.
For 5.1 over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC only. HLS supports AAC, AC3, or EAC3 for 5.1. YouTube also says automatic 5.1 detection and production rely on a stream key created with manual resolution settings turned off; consult the current Live Control Room instructions for 5.1 when setting up a key. Its list of compatible encoders includes OBS and Videon EdgeCaster, among others; that is a compatibility list, not a guarantee that every configuration will work.

Do not use upload settings for a Live stream
If you are uploading a finished file as a standard YouTube video—not feeding it into Live—the audio guidance differs. YouTube recommends 48 kHz and lists 384 Kbps for stereo and 512 Kbps for 5.1 uploads. Its upload guidance lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. Those upload figures are not the Live encoder recommendations above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Preflight checklist before going live
- Confirm the workflow. Decide whether the file is being uploaded as a normal video or played through an encoder into Live. Use the corresponding recommendations above.
- Verify the source layout. Use stereo for a two-channel mix. Choose 5.1 only if the content is genuinely mixed in 5.1 and the channel assignments are correct.
- Set the encoder audio output. For ordinary stereo Live playback, set AAC, 128 Kbps, and 44.1 kHz. For supported 5.1 Live playback, set AAC, 384 Kbps, and 48 kHz.
- Check the ingestion path and key for 5.1. RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 requires AAC. Follow YouTube’s key configuration guidance for automatic 5.1 detection; the stream key’s manual resolution settings must be off for that detection and production process.
- Test a representative stream. Include the real audio and moving video, then review Live stream health before relying on the setup for an event. YouTube advises testing before going live, and its API health messages can warn about unsupported codecs, excessive audio bitrate, or unsupported channel counts. See YouTube Live stream health documentation.
Troubleshooting audio configuration problems
| Symptom or warning | What to check | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an unsupported codec | Confirm the audio codec and ingestion protocol, especially for 5.1. | For RTMP/RTMPS 5.1, use AAC. Check YouTube’s current guidance for the selected protocol. |
| YouTube reports excessive audio bitrate | Compare the encoder output with the applicable Live recommendation. | Use 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1, rather than substituting upload recommendations. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported channel count or surround converts incorrectly | Check the actual output layout and channel mapping; non-mono, non-stereo, non-5.1 configurations may convert unreliably. | Send a correctly mapped stereo pair for ordinary content, or a correctly mapped 5.1 mix when the whole path supports it. |
| 5.1 is not detected or produced as expected | Check the key’s manual resolution setting and the encoder’s protocol and channel support. | For YouTube’s automatic 5.1 detection and production, create a key with manual resolution settings turned off and test the real setup. |
| You intended a standard upload, not Live ingestion | Check whether the file is going through Live at all. | Use YouTube’s upload guidance instead: 48 kHz, with its listed stereo or 5.1 upload bitrate. |
