If you want a close match for classic 1990s survival horror, start with Clock Tower: Rewind, a modern revival of the 1995 game with both an Original mode and an updated Rewind mode. For urban science-fiction horror with RPG combat, try Parasite Eve. Galerians is a more anime-styled body-horror pick, while Fear Effect is a cinematic near miss: its original game arrived in 2000, just outside the decade.
How to choose your next game
These games overlap in unsettling imagery and science-fiction or horror themes, but they do not all play like traditional survival horror. Choose by the kind of experience you want: evasion and exploration, RPG combat, anime-influenced body horror, or cinematic action-adventure.

Clock Tower: Rewind: the closest classic survival-horror fit
Clock Tower: Rewind revives the 1995 survival-horror game. Its Steam listing describes two ways to play: Original mode recreates the original release, while Rewind mode adds content and refinements. The story takes place in the Barrows family manor, where you explore, search for items, and evade the pursuing Scissorman in tense 2D point-and-click play. The Steam listing gives the clearest currently verified storefront route among these recommendations; it confirms Steam availability, not stock at Amazon or availability on other platforms.

Parasite Eve is a 1999 PlayStation game that brings science-fiction horror to Manhattan, where people face a threat of spontaneous human combustion. GamesRadar’s retrospective describes its mix of creepy urban horror and ATB-style pausable combat. That combat system is central to the experience, so expect a horror RPG rather than a conventional survival-horror game built primarily around evasion and resource scarcity. The release date and game details here come from an editorial retrospective, not original publisher documentation; current storefront availability is not established here.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
Galerians: an anime-styled body-horror alternative
Galerians, a 1999 PS1 game, suits players drawn to disturbing science-fiction imagery and anime-influenced style. A recent PS1 horror feature characterizes it as “pure 90s anime body horror”; that is the feature’s editorial description, not a verified statement from the developer. The same feature is the basis for this recommendation. Current storefront availability is not established here.
Fear Effect: a cinematic near miss for strict 1990s lists
The original Fear Effect is worth considering for its distinctive, cinematic presentation, but it arrived in 2000 rather than the 1990s. A recent PS1 horror feature includes it among visually distinctive horror games. That retrospective supports treating it as an adjacent pick, not a strict 90s recommendation.
Rank #2
Do not confuse the original with Fear Effect Sedna: Square Enix Collective describes Sedna as a real-time tactical action game and lists its Steam release as March 6, 2018. Its official page establishes those details, not that it is a survival-horror entry.
Quick comparison
| Game | Best fit | How closely it matches survival horror | What is established about playing it now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clock Tower: Rewind | Classic evasion, exploration, and survival tension | Closest fit in these recommendations | Steam listing confirms availability; other platforms and retailer stock are not established here. |
| Parasite Eve | Urban science-fiction horror with RPG combat | Adjacent: RPG combat is a defining part of play | Current storefront availability is not established here. |
| Galerians | Anime-influenced body horror | Adjacent pick; the source emphasizes style and tone | Current storefront availability is not established here. |
| Fear Effect | Cinematic presentation | Near miss for a strict 1990s list; the original is an action-adventure recommendation | Current availability of the original is not established here. Fear Effect Sedna has an official page listing a Steam release on March 6, 2018, but it is described as tactical action. |
What to play first
Pick Clock Tower: Rewind if you want the clearest match for classic survival horror and a verified current Steam listing. Choose Parasite Eve if you are happy for RPG combat to shape the horror experience. Go to Galerians for the anime-influenced body-horror angle, or Fear Effect if a cinematic near miss outside the decade is acceptable.
