The TCL QM6K is the strongest source-backed pick for a 55-inch smart TV under $500: TechRadar named it its best model in this price category, and reported a $499.99 Best Buy sale price. That price is a dated snapshot, not a standing offer. The Hisense U65QF is a worthwhile alternative if you value brightness and gaming connections, but Tom’s Guide flags tradeoffs in fast-action handling, light bloom, viewing angles and its Fire TV interface.

When the Hisense U65QF is a better fit
The 55-inch Hisense U65QF is the alternative to consider if you want a 144Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 connections while staying below the $500 ceiling. Tom’s Guide lists two HDMI 2.1 ports, two HDMI 2.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port and one USB 3.0 port. It also lists 4K resolution (3,840 × 2,160), Amazon Fire TV, and support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
Tom’s Guide reports strong brightness and color, but also notes issues with some fast-moving scenes, light bloom and viewing angles, along with an uninspiring Fire TV interface. Those are the guide’s review findings, not independent test results here. Its best TVs under $500 guide provides the recommendation and model details.

What should you look for in a 55-inch TV?
Match brightness and screen technology to the room
A bright room puts more pressure on a TV’s ability to produce a visible picture. The TCL’s reported moderate-daylight performance offers a useful review reference, but room brightness, window placement and viewing habits differ. Don’t assume a screen technology or a peak-brightness figure alone guarantees a good result in your home.
Check HDR support and review findings together
Both models list Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG support, though the TCL lists Dolby Vision IQ specifically. Format support tells you what a TV can accept; it does not by itself establish how impressive HDR will look. Consider the reviewers’ picture-quality observations as well as the specifications.

Count the ports you will actually use
Both TVs list a 144Hz refresh rate and HDMI 2.1 ports, features relevant to gaming. The QM6K has four HDMI 2.1 ports; the U65QF has two, alongside two HDMI 2.0 ports. Count the devices you plan to connect—such as a console, receiver or streaming device—and check whether the available ports suit your setup.
Choose the smart-TV interface you prefer
The QM6K uses Google TV, while the U65QF uses Fire TV. Since the platform affects the built-in smart-TV experience, include it in the decision rather than choosing on panel features alone. The cited U65QF review specifically criticizes its interface; the available source details do not establish an equivalent interface drawback for the TCL.

- Set a delivered-price ceiling. Compare the checkout total, including any delivery charge, with your $500 budget. A sale price reported earlier is not proof that the offer remains available.
- Confirm the exact 55-inch model. Check the model name and any suffix on the retailer listing; similarly named or differently sized versions may have different specifications.
- Check current stock and return terms. Read the retailer’s current return policy and any conditions that apply to the specific listing before ordering.
- Recheck the connections and platform. Make sure the TV has enough of the ports you need and that you are comfortable with its smart-TV system.
How these recommendations were evaluated
These picks are based on the cited editorial guides, not independent testing for this article. TechRadar says its TV evaluations cover picture, built-in audio, gaming features, smart-TV platform, ease of use, design and value, combining subjective review with objective measurements. Tom’s Guide supplies the U65QF specifications and review tradeoffs summarized above. The available Consumer Reports 2026 Buying Guide excerpt does not provide a clear enough 55-inch-under-$500 comparison to support another ranking.
