Best 500GB SSDs: Compatibility-First Picks and Buying Guide

The best 500GB-class SSD is the one that matches your computer’s connector, protocol, physical size and firmware support. A 2.5-inch SATA drive such as the Samsung 870 EVO or Crucial MX500 is not interchangeable with an M.2 PCIe/NVMe drive such as the Samsung 980. Check the computer or motherboard manual before comparing speed, endurance or price; an “M.2 slot” alone does not guarantee compatibility.

What “500G SSD” means in listings

Retailers commonly use “500G,” “500GB” and sometimes “512GB” for the same buying category: an SSD with roughly half a terabyte of raw capacity. The label is not a compatibility standard. Two drives with similar capacity can use entirely different connectors and protocols.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Manufacturers rate capacity in decimal gigabytes, so a drive sold as 500GB will show less space in an operating system after decimal-to-binary conversion, formatting and reserved space. The exact usable figure varies by operating system, partition layout and the manufacturer’s over-provisioning choices. Treat 500GB as the advertised raw capacity, not a promise that every byte will be available for files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current SSD guides also show why an exact 500GB capacity is not always available in every product line. For example, a 2026 category guide lists a budget model beginning at 512GB rather than 500GB. That is useful context, but its test results cannot be transferred to the Samsung or Crucial drives discussed here. See TechRadar’s 2026 SSD guide for broader category context.

Compatibility comes before speed

2.5-inch SATA

A 2.5-inch SATA SSD uses the same general drive bay and SATA data-and-power arrangement found in many older laptops, desktops and game systems. Confirm that your computer has a 2.5-inch bay, a SATA data connection and the necessary power cable or adapter. A 7mm-thick drive generally fits thin laptop bays, but a caddy, spacer or mounting bracket may be needed in a desktop or an unusually deep bay.

SATA 6Gb/s is the interface limit for these drives. Published sequential transfer figures around 500–560 MB/s are normal for a modern SATA SSD; a faster NVMe specification cannot make a SATA connection operate at NVMe speeds.

M.2 SATA

M.2 describes a physical card shape, not a protocol. Some M.2 sockets accept SATA-based drives, some accept PCIe/NVMe drives, and some accept both. The key notch pattern, socket wiring, supported key type and the computer’s firmware all matter. An M.2 SATA drive is not established by the product candidates in this guide, so do not assume that any M.2 SATA model will work in your machine without the manual confirming SATA support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

M.2 PCIe/NVMe

An M.2 PCIe/NVMe SSD communicates over PCI Express rather than SATA. Check the PCIe generation supported by the computer, whether the socket accepts NVMe boot devices, and the supported module length. The common 2280 size is about 80mm long, but a short 2230 or 2242 socket cannot accept a 2280 module without the correct mounting point and clearance.

Crucial BX500 500 GB Solid State Drive - 2.5" Internal - SATA (SATA/600)
  • Provides sufficient storage capacityof 500 GB for your computer, ensuring you have ample space for all your files and applications
  • Power and energy-efficient design ensures maximum reliability for your SSD
  • With the high write speed of 500 MB/s, experience quick responses when updating or transferring files
  • Experience faster data storage with the SATA/600 interface, designed to optimize burst performance for enhanced efficiency
  • The impressive read speed of 550 MB/s enhances system performance, allowing you to complete complex tasks efficiently

Also inspect the space above the socket. A motherboard heatsink, laptop shield, memory module or bottom cover can interfere with a thick drive or an added heatsink. A manufacturer’s specification for a drive is not a substitute for the host computer’s installation limits.

Representative 500GB-class internal SSD picks

These are compatibility-based examples, not a universal ranking. The cited speed and endurance numbers are manufacturer-published maximums or limits, not independent head-to-head test results.

Samsung 870 EVO 500GB — 2.5-inch SATA choice

The Samsung 870 EVO 500GB (model MZ-77E500B/AM) is a 2.5-inch SATA SSD for systems with a conventional SATA drive connection. Samsung publishes sequential read/write speeds of up to 560/530 MB/s, up to 4,800 TBW and a five-year limited warranty on its US product page. Those are Samsung’s claims under its stated conditions; actual performance depends on the computer, queue depth, thermal conditions, operating system and workload.

Choose this form factor when your laptop or desktop manual specifies a 2.5-inch SATA replacement. It is not a drop-in replacement for an NVMe-only M.2 socket. Verify the exact regional warranty and the seller’s model number before purchase. Samsung’s 870 EVO product page contains the cited specifications.

Crucial MX500 500GB — 2.5-inch SATA alternative

The Crucial MX500 500GB, part CT500MX500SSD1, is identified in Crucial’s product flyer as a 2.5-inch, 7mm SATA 6Gb/s SSD. The flyer lists sequential read/write speeds of up to 560/510 MB/s. It is dated March 15, 2019, so availability, warranty language and regional terms should be checked against the current listing before ordering.

This is the appropriate type of drive for a 2.5-inch SATA bay, not for an NVMe-only M.2 socket. Confirm that the current listing uses part CT500MX500SSD1 or the correct regional equivalent. The cited specifications come from the Crucial MX500 product flyer.

Samsung 980 500GB — PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 choice

The Samsung 980 500GB is an M.2 PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 NVMe 1.4 SSD. Samsung Canada lists dimensions of 80.15 × 22.15 × 2.38mm and overview sequential speeds of up to 3,100/2,600 MB/s read/write for the named 500GB product. Samsung also states a five-year limited warranty or a 300 TBW limit, whichever comes first, on that page.

The same page’s marketing copy mentions up to 3,500/3,000 MB/s. Because those figures differ from the overview specification for the 500GB SKU, use 3,100/2,600 MB/s when comparing this particular capacity and verify the current regional specification. The drive requires an M.2 socket wired for PCIe/NVMe and a mounting position compatible with its 80mm length. Samsung’s Canadian product page provides the cited details.

“Up to” values are laboratory or vendor-rated ceilings, not guaranteed transfers for every file. Sequential numbers describe large, continuous transfers; operating-system boot, application launches and mixed workloads also depend on random performance, controller behavior, temperature, queue depth and the host platform. The evidence here does not provide independent random-performance measurements for these exact 500GB models.

How to identify the right drive for your laptop or desktop

  1. Read the service manual first. Look for the storage section and record the permitted form factors, interface, keying, supported lengths and whether an M.2 socket is SATA, PCIe/NVMe or dual-protocol.
  2. Inspect the existing drive without forcing anything. A 2.5-inch drive has a broad rectangular body and separate SATA data and power contacts. An M.2 module is a narrow circuit board secured by one screw or latch. Photograph the mounting point before removal.
  3. Check boot support. Some older systems can physically accept an NVMe module but cannot boot from it without a firmware update or do not support NVMe at all. The manual or manufacturer support page should explicitly address boot compatibility.
  4. Confirm length and clearance. Match 2230, 2242, 2260 or 2280 mounting positions as applicable. Measure the available height if the computer has a cover, shield or heatsink over the socket.
  5. Check the migration plan. A 500GB replacement needs enough usable space for the existing operating-system partition and personal files, or you must back up and perform a clean installation. Keep a verified backup before opening the computer.
  6. Match the exact part and region. Model suffixes can vary by market. Check the seller, warranty region, return policy and whether the item is new, genuine and sealed.

Installation and migration checklist

Before opening the computer

  • Back up documents, photos, credentials and recovery keys to a separate location.
  • Create or confirm a bootable operating-system recovery drive.
  • Record drive-encryption status and ensure you can retrieve the recovery key.
  • Shut down fully, disconnect power and follow the manufacturer’s battery-disconnect and electrostatic-discharge instructions.
  • Have the correct screwdriver, mounting screw or 2.5-inch bracket, and any required SATA cable or adapter.

Physical installation

  1. Remove the existing drive according to the service manual; never pry an M.2 module while its retaining screw is installed.
  2. For a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, secure the drive in the bay, connect both SATA data and power, and use a spacer if the bay requires one for a 7mm drive.
  3. For an M.2 SSD, insert the module at the socket’s angle, lower it flat and secure it at the correct mounting position. Do not bend the board.
  4. Reconnect the battery or power, close the chassis and enter firmware setup to confirm that the new drive is detected.

Operating-system setup

For a cloned installation, verify that the clone completed, that the new drive is selected as the first boot device and that the original drive remains untouched until the replacement boots successfully. For a clean installation, select the unallocated space on the new SSD, install the operating system, apply firmware and chipset updates, then restore files from the backup. Afterward, confirm that the operating system reports the expected capacity and that the drive is operating in the intended SATA or NVMe mode.

Endurance, warranty and reliability decisions

TBW means terabytes written: an endurance limit used in a manufacturer’s warranty or specification. It is not a forecast that the drive will fail immediately afterward, and it is not directly comparable when manufacturers define warranty conditions differently. The 870 EVO’s published “up to 4,800 TBW” and the Samsung 980’s five-year or 300 TBW limit belong to different product families and should not be treated as a quality ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warranty duration alone is incomplete. Check whether the limit is time-based, TBW-based or whichever occurs first; whether warranty service is local; what proof of purchase is required; and whether the exact model and seller are covered. The MX500 flyer used here is from 2019 and does not establish current regional warranty terms, so verify those terms at purchase.

Capacity and value without a misleading price ranking

Prices and stock change by country, seller and promotion. The available evidence does not establish a current cheapest or best-value 500GB SSD, so compare live listings using the same capacity class and warranty conditions. Divide the listed price by the advertised decimal capacity for a rough price-per-gigabyte comparison, then account for shipping, taxes, return costs and usable space.

Do not pay for NVMe performance that the host cannot use. Conversely, do not buy a SATA drive for an NVMe-only socket simply because its price per gigabyte is lower. A correctly supported 500GB drive with a valid warranty is a better purchase than an incompatible bargain.

Internal versus portable external storage

If the goal is removable storage rather than an internal upgrade, a portable SSD is a different category. A 2026 portable-SSD guide lists 500GB among the capacities of the WD My Passport SSD family; use that kind of device over USB for backups or carrying files. It does not replace an internal drive when the computer’s built-in storage must be upgraded, and its real speed depends on the USB port, cable and enclosure. See TechRadar’s 2026 portable SSD guide for category context.

Troubleshooting common purchase and installation failures

The M.2 drive is not detected

  • Recheck whether the socket supports PCIe/NVMe or only SATA.
  • Confirm that the module is fully inserted and secured at the correct length.
  • Update firmware only according to the computer manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Check whether installing an M.2 device disables particular SATA ports; some motherboards share lanes.
  • Test the drive in a known-compatible system or adapter before declaring it defective.

The computer sees the drive but cannot boot

  • Confirm that the system supports booting from that protocol and that the bootloader was cloned or installed correctly.
  • Check UEFI/legacy boot-mode compatibility and select the new drive in the boot-order menu.
  • Use the operating-system recovery environment to repair the bootloader only after confirming the backup.

The advertised speed is not reached

  • Verify that a SATA drive is connected through a SATA 6Gb/s path rather than an older controller.
  • For NVMe, check the PCIe generation and lane count available to the socket.
  • Run a benchmark with adequate free space and realistic workload expectations; vendor “up to” figures are not guaranteed in every system.
  • Check temperatures and airflow, since thermal management and sustained writes can reduce transfer rates.

The listed capacity is smaller than 500GB

This is normally expected after decimal-to-binary conversion, formatting and reserved space. Compare the operating system’s reported capacity with the manufacturer’s advertised decimal capacity, not with a 500GiB expectation.

Which 500GB SSD should you choose?

  • Choose the Samsung 870 EVO 500GB when the computer requires a 2.5-inch SATA drive and you want the cited combination of 560/530 MB/s rated sequential speeds, a published 4,800 TBW figure and a five-year limited warranty.
  • Choose the Crucial MX500 500GB when the computer requires a 7mm 2.5-inch SATA 6Gb/s drive and the current listing’s warranty, stock and part number check out. Its cited flyer rates it at up to 560/510 MB/s.
  • Choose the Samsung 980 500GB when the computer manual confirms an M.2 PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 NVMe socket, an 80mm mounting position and adequate clearance. Use the 500GB overview rating of up to 3,100/2,600 MB/s and verify the five-year/300 TBW warranty condition for your region.
  • Choose another capacity or model when 500GB leaves too little room for your operating system, applications and working files, or when your platform requires a length, protocol or generation not covered by these examples.

There is no single best 500GB SSD independent of the host system. Confirm compatibility first, then compare the exact model’s usable capacity, published performance, endurance, warranty, current price and local availability.
