TechRadar’s 2026 guide to Netflix VPNs names five services: NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access (PIA). It gives NordVPN the overall pick, Surfshark the budget pick, Proton VPN the privacy pick and ExpressVPN the beginner-friendly pick, with PIA as the fifth option. Those rankings reflect that guide’s testing at the time it was written. They are not a guarantee that any service will open a given catalogue, in a given country, on a given day, and Netflix itself limits what a VPN viewer can see.
The five picks at a glance
The table below separates what TechRadar reports from what each provider says about itself. Where the provider material consulted for this article says nothing on a point, the cell says so.

| Provider | Role in TechRadar’s 2026 guide | Streaming details reported by TechRadar | Provider statements (source and date) |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Overall pick | Reported access to the Netflix libraries it tested; describes its NordLynx protocol as consistently quick. | Not stated in the provider material consulted for this article. |
| Surfshark | Budget pick | Described as quick and budget-oriented; reports a 100-country server network. | Not stated in the provider material consulted for this article. |
| Proton VPN | Privacy pick | Reported successful Netflix access on its premium plan; describes broad server coverage. | Proton’s support article “How to watch Netflix with Proton VPN” says a paid plan is required for streaming, lists Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+, and gives setup instructions for desktop, mobile, Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV. |
| ExpressVPN | Beginner-friendly pick | Described as having a straightforward app and streaming speeds suitable for HD and 4K. | ExpressVPN’s article “How to Use a VPN to Access Any Web Service” says it has servers in 113 countries, warns it is not intended as a means of copyright circumvention, and says streaming subscriptions must be bought separately. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Fifth option | Reported no problems checking Netflix libraries, but described as less quick than NordVPN and Surfshark. | Not stated in the provider material consulted for this article. |
Speed and library results come from one independent test, and the guide’s wording on them should be read as a description of that test rather than a fixed technical specification. Its price, plan and guarantee details are also not reproduced here, because they change; check each provider’s current pricing and refund terms before you buy.
Matching a pick to your situation
A top-five list is a shortlist. The right choice depends on which services you use, where you are, and what you watch on.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Five Gigabit Ports】1 Gigabit WAN Port plus 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus 2 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to 3 WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【One USB WAN Port】Mobile broadband via 4G/3G modem is supported for WAN backup by connecting to the USB port. For complete list of compatible 4G/3G modems, please visit TP-Link website.
- 【Abundant Security Features】Advanced firewall policies, DoS defense, IP/MAC/URL filtering, speed test and more security functions protect your network and data.
- 【Highly Secure VPN】Supports up to 20× LAN-to-LAN IPsec, 16× OpenVPN, 16× L2TP, and 16× PPTP VPN connections.
- Security - SPI Firewall, VPN Pass through, FTP/H.323/PPTP/SIP/IPsec ALG, DoS Defence, Ping of Death and Local Management. Standards and Protocols IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3x, IEEE 802.1q
- Countries and catalogues. Library results are tied to the countries and dates in the test. Do not assume every catalogue behaves the same way in every location.
- Services beyond Netflix. Proton’s support article names Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+. If you use another service, confirm it is supported before you rely on it.
- Devices. Proton lists setup instructions for desktop, mobile, Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV. Confirm the app and instructions match your exact device and its current version.
- Budget. TechRadar’s budget label points to Surfshark. Compare its current plan price against the others only after checking the terms that apply to you.
- Privacy focus. TechRadar’s privacy pick is Proton VPN. Streaming on Proton requires a paid plan, so a free tier will not cover Netflix.
- First-time VPN users. TechRadar’s beginner pick is ExpressVPN, based on its straightforward app.
What Netflix says a VPN changes
A VPN changes the network location Netflix sees, and Netflix’s Help Center article “Watching TV shows and movies through a VPN” describes several consequences:
- Catalogue limits. Netflix states: “With a VPN, you may only be shown TV shows and movies Netflix has worldwide licensing for, like Squid Games or Stranger Things.” Titles licensed only for your own region may not appear, and you may need to turn the VPN off to see them.
- Live events. Netflix says VPNs are unsupported for watching live events, so a VPN should not be expected to work for them.
- Ad-supported plans. Netflix says VPNs are also unsupported on its ad-supported experience.
Why access is never guaranteed
TechRadar notes that VPN providers must keep adapting to streaming services’ geoblocking, and that a provider can temporarily lose access. A service that worked during a review may stop working later, and a result from one test describes that test and that period. Check current behaviour before you pay for a plan, especially if a specific library matters to you.
Rank #2
- 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.

If Netflix shows a VPN or proxy message
Netflix’s troubleshooting article “Netflix says, ‘You seem to be using a VPN or proxy.'” recommends the following. Work through them in order.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Fast.com and check the client country it shows. This tells you whether your connection appears to come from the VPN’s location.
- Check whether your plan is an ad-supported one, since VPNs are unsupported on that experience.
- Review your network settings and reset them if needed.
- If the problem persists, turn off the VPN and try again.
The message does not always mean a VPN is the cause. Netflix’s instructions include other network checks, so treat the message as a prompt to investigate rather than as proof.
Rank #3

Account and cost basics
A VPN does not include a Netflix or other streaming subscription. ExpressVPN states that streaming accounts must be purchased separately, and the same applies to every service on this list. Proton VPN’s paid-plan requirement for streaming is covered above, so budget for both the VPN and the streaming account you already hold.
Bottom line
For most readers, start with the pick that matches your priority: NordVPN for TechRadar’s overall recommendation, Surfshark for budget, Proton VPN for privacy, ExpressVPN for simplicity. Then verify your specific services, countries and devices, and check current terms before you commit.
