The best 40-inch TV depends on the compromise you are willing to make. Exact 40-inch models are compact and often affordable, but many use 1080p rather than 4K. The TCL 40Q3K is a 1080p QLED Google TV, the Hisense 40A4NR is a 1080p Roku TV, and TechRadar lists the 40-inch Amazon Fire TV 2-Series as a sub-$250 option. If your room and budget allow a slightly larger screen, 42- and 43-inch televisions open the door to 4K and OLED, including the 42-inch LG OLED42C6.
Use the model-by-model comparison below, then measure your furniture, count your HDMI devices, check the apps your household needs, and verify current stock and pricing in your country. Prices, availability and model generations can change quickly.

Quick comparison: the 40-inch TVs and nearby alternatives worth checking
There is no single universal winner because these sets target different buyers. The table separates exact 40-inch choices from the larger alternatives that may deliver a better picture if they fit.
| Model | Size and panel | Resolution | Smart platform | Connections and notable features | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TCL 40Q3K | 40-inch QLED | 1080p Full HD | Google TV | Bluetooth personal audio; two HDMI inputs | Official US specifications; the page displayed “Sold out” when accessed |
| Hisense 40A4NR | 40-inch LCD | 1080p Full HD | Roku TV | Built-in Roku; supports cable, satellite, streaming or an HDTV antenna | Official US product description; manufacturer claims are not independent test results |
| Amazon Fire TV 2-Series (40-inch) | 40-inch LED | 1080p | Fire TV | Exact input and audio details vary by listing and should be checked before purchase | TechRadar calls it its best 40-inch TV under $250; the publication had not tested this 40-inch version |
| LG OLED42C6 | 42-inch OLED | 4K | webOS 26 | Adjacent-size option rather than a 40-inch model | TechRadar names it best 42-inch TV for most people in its current guide |
| 43-inch Amazon Omni QLED | 43-inch QLED | Check the exact listing | Fire TV | Larger than the target size; model-specific ports and resolution should be confirmed | Listed by TechRadar among budget alternatives |
“Best” in the table means best fit for the stated use case, not a guarantee that one television will look or work best in every room. A sale, regional variant, warranty policy or missing app can change the right choice.

Start with the room, not the screen label
Measure the cabinet and stand area
A 40-inch diagonal describes the panel corner to corner, not the television’s overall width, height or depth. Bezels, a center stand and rear connectors can make the complete unit larger than the panel. Measure the usable width of the furniture, the depth available for the stand, and the clearance behind the set for power and HDMI cables. If you plan to wall-mount it, measure the wall space and confirm the exact model’s VESA pattern and weight in its manual before buying a bracket.
Check the viewing distance
TCL’s UK guidance says that 1080p or 4K can suit a 40-inch screen and suggests viewing from 5 to 8 feet. That is manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule or an independent study. Your eyesight, content quality and tolerance for visible pixels matter. Sit where you normally watch and check whether subtitles and interface text are comfortable at that distance. A 40-inch screen can feel generous in a bedroom or office but undersized across a large open-plan lounge.
Decide whether 42 or 43 inches still fit
Do not treat 40 inches as a hard limit until you have measured. A 42- or 43-inch set adds only a small amount of diagonal size but can radically expand the available panel technology. The LG OLED42C6, for example, is a 42-inch 4K OLED with webOS 26 and is identified by TechRadar as its best 42-inch choice for most people. The 43-inch Amazon Omni QLED is another larger budget option. These are not 40-inch models, so compare their complete width and stand footprint with your furniture rather than assuming the difference will be negligible.

What 1080p means here
Full HD, or 1080p, has 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. At this screen size it can be a sensible way to keep the price and processing demands down, particularly for broadcast television, older consoles and ordinary streaming. The TCL 40Q3K and Hisense 40A4NR are both documented as 1080p models, and the 40-inch Fire TV 2-Series is listed as 1080p LED.
When 4K is worth prioritizing
4K provides 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, four times as many pixels as 1080p. It is most useful when you sit close enough to resolve the extra detail, watch high-quality 4K streams or discs, use a modern game console, or want a larger screen that will remain useful for several years. The practical issue is availability: 4K choices are much easier to find at 42 and 43 inches than at exactly 40 inches. If 4K is a requirement, search adjacent sizes before accepting a compromise on panel quality or smart features.
Do not infer resolution from “smart TV”
Smart-TV branding identifies the software platform, not the number of pixels. Two televisions can both run streaming apps while one is 1080p and the other is 4K. Always read the exact model number and resolution line in the specification sheet. Retailer category filters can combine different sizes and generations under one product family, so verify the suffix printed on the listing and the carton.
Exact 40-inch models
TCL 40Q3K: a compact QLED Google TV with a stock caveat
The TCL 40Q3K is documented on TCL’s US page as a 40-inch 1080p Full HD QLED Google TV. QLED describes the panel’s quantum-dot layer; it does not turn this model into a 4K television. The listed smart platform is Google TV, and Bluetooth personal audio is included for compatible headphones or speakers. TCL lists two HDMI inputs, so count your devices carefully if you use a set-top box, soundbar, game console, disc player or computer.

The most important purchasing caveat is availability. The official page showed “Sold out” when accessed. That makes the 40Q3K a documented model to look for, not a guaranteed in-stock recommendation. Search by the complete model number, compare the regional variant, and check the seller’s return and warranty terms before paying. Do not assume a similarly named TCL set has the same resolution, ports or operating system.
Hisense 40A4NR: Roku interface and flexible source options
The Hisense 40A4NR is described as a 40-inch FHD Roku TV with a 1080p LCD panel. Its built-in Roku interface is intended for streaming, while the product description also lists connections for cable, satellite, streaming devices or an HDTV antenna. That flexibility suits a household combining live television with apps.
Hisense makes picture and sound claims on the product page, but those are manufacturer statements rather than independent measurements. The available material does not establish laboratory brightness, color accuracy, input lag or speaker loudness for this exact model. If those characteristics determine your purchase, look for a review that explicitly tested the 40A4NR rather than relying on a review of another size or generation. Confirm the number and type of HDMI ports in the regional specification sheet before ordering.
Amazon Fire TV 2-Series, 40-inch: the low-price candidate
TechRadar lists the 40-inch Fire TV 2-Series as its best 40-inch television under $250 and identifies it as a 1080p LED Fire TV. The price is a guide-post, not a permanent street price: retailer promotions, taxes, shipping and regional listings can change the final cost. Check the exact 40-inch listing and its current specification page.

TechRadar says it had not tested the 40-inch version. Observations from its testing of the 32-inch version therefore cannot establish the 40-inch set’s measured picture, audio, gaming response or brightness. Treat this model as a budget and platform choice, then verify return coverage in case the actual unit does not meet your expectations.
The 42- and 43-inch alternatives
LG OLED42C6: the picture-quality path
The LG OLED42C6 is a 42-inch alternative, not an exact-size recommendation. TechRadar’s current guide names it the best 42-inch TV for most people and lists 4K OLED and webOS 26 specifications. OLED can be attractive when contrast and dark-room viewing matter, while 4K provides more detail for close seating and high-quality sources.
Its larger diagonal and different panel technology mean you should assess it separately from a 40-inch LCD or QLED. Measure the television’s actual width and stand arrangement, check the price in your region, and consider whether your room’s light and viewing habits justify the extra cost. TechRadar’s editorial ranking is guidance, not a universal result for every household.

43-inch budget models
A 43-inch set may be the practical middle ground when you want more 4K and QLED availability without moving to a much larger television. TechRadar includes a 43-inch Amazon Omni QLED among its budget options. Because listings and generations can differ, verify the exact resolution, operating system, HDMI count, stand dimensions and warranty for the unit you are considering. The extra three inches over a 40-inch model can matter more to furniture fit than the diagonal number suggests.

Smart platforms: choose the apps and controls your household will actually use
Google TV on the TCL 40Q3K
Google TV is the interface named for the TCL model. It is a reasonable fit if your household already uses Google accounts or wants a unified home screen for supported streaming services. App availability can vary by country and service agreement, so check the apps you need before buying. Bluetooth personal audio can be useful for late-night viewing, but verify headphone compatibility and whether you need a separate Bluetooth transmitter for other devices.
Roku TV on the Hisense 40A4NR
Roku TV emphasizes a straightforward app and input interface and is built into the 40A4NR. It can suit viewers who want streaming alongside cable, satellite or an antenna. The exact channel and app catalog is region-dependent; confirm that the services your household pays for are supported where you live.
Fire TV on the Amazon 2-Series
Fire TV is the platform identified for the 40-inch 2-Series. It can be a sensible match for homes already comfortable with that interface and voice-search workflow. The platform does not tell you the panel quality, and the 40-inch model’s independent test data is not established in the cited guide, so evaluate software convenience separately from picture expectations.
webOS 26 on the LG alternative
The OLED42C6 is listed with webOS 26. This is one reason the 42-inch model is a different proposition from the exact 40-inch sets: you are buying a 4K OLED television and its software ecosystem, not merely a slightly larger screen. Check regional app support and update policy, particularly if you expect to keep the TV for many years.
Inputs, audio and gaming: the details that prevent buyer’s remorse
Count HDMI devices before you order
Write down every device that must remain connected: a cable or satellite box, soundbar, game console, disc player, streaming stick and laptop can quickly exceed two inputs. TCL lists two HDMI inputs on the 40Q3K. The supplied information does not establish a complete HDMI count for the Hisense, Fire TV or LG alternatives, so confirm it in the exact regional specification sheet. If you need an audio return channel, a particular HDMI version or eARC for a soundbar, look for that label rather than assuming it is present.
Plan for headphones and external speakers
Bluetooth personal audio is specifically listed for the TCL 40Q3K. Other models may support Bluetooth, optical output, HDMI audio return or only analog connections, but those capabilities are model-specific. Decide whether you will use built-in speakers, wireless headphones or a soundbar, then verify the required output before purchase. A television can have excellent app support and still be inconvenient if it lacks the connector your audio system needs.

Separate gaming needs from resolution
4K does not automatically mean lower input lag, and 1080p does not automatically mean a poor gaming experience. Refresh rate, game mode, supported signals and measured input lag need model-specific testing. The cited TechRadar guide says its test process evaluates gaming and input lag, but it does not provide those measurements for the models listed here. Do not transfer results from a different size or generation to a 40-inch set.
How to choose in five steps
- Set the physical limit. Measure furniture width, depth, viewing height and cable clearance. Include the stand, not just the panel.
- Choose the size range. If an exact 40-inch model is required, stay with the 1080p options listed above. If 4K or OLED matters, measure whether 42 or 43 inches can fit.
- Write a resolution requirement. Mark 1080p as acceptable for ordinary viewing, or make 4K mandatory for close seating, modern gaming or high-resolution sources.
- Match the platform. Compare Google TV, Roku TV, Fire TV and webOS with the services, accounts and voice controls your household already uses.
- Verify the exact listing. Check model suffix, current price, stock, HDMI count, audio outputs, dimensions, warranty, return period and regional app support immediately before checkout.
Installation and setup checklist
- Remove the packaging only after checking that the carton’s model number matches the order.
- Place the stand on a level surface and leave the manufacturer’s specified ventilation clearance around the set.
- Connect the most important HDMI device first, then label each input in the TV menu.
- Run the network and software update process before judging app performance.
- Set the picture mode for your room and disable unnecessary motion processing if it makes films or games look unnatural.
- Pair Bluetooth headphones only after confirming that the television supports the required profile; the TCL 40Q3K specifically lists Bluetooth personal audio.
- For wall installation, use the exact model’s VESA pattern and weight limit. Do not select a mount solely because it is advertised for “40-inch TVs.”
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every 40-inch TV is 4K
Exact-size sets in this guide are predominantly 1080p. Read the resolution field for the precise model, not the retailer’s category heading.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Using another size’s review as proof
Panel behavior, ports, speakers and input lag can change between sizes and generations. In particular, TechRadar’s 32-inch Fire TV testing does not establish performance for the untested 40-inch version.
Ignoring stock and regional variants
The TCL 40Q3K page showed sold out when accessed, and product names can map to different regional hardware. Check local stock, tuner standards, warranty coverage and return rights.
Buying before counting ports
Two HDMI inputs may be enough for a television and one console but not for a larger setup. Draw your connection plan first and verify every required port.
Focusing on the lowest ticket price
A low purchase price can be offset by a missing app, an unsuitable stand, a required streaming stick or an audio adapter. Compare the complete setup cost and the inconvenience of replacing the TV if a key feature is absent.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the TCL 40Q3K if you want a documented 40-inch QLED Google TV with Bluetooth personal audio and two HDMI inputs, and you can find legitimate current stock. Choose the Hisense 40A4NR if Roku TV and a mix of antenna, cable, satellite and streaming sources fit your routine. Consider the 40-inch Fire TV 2-Series when the current price is genuinely below your budget ceiling and you accept that the 40-inch version was not independently tested in the cited guide. If 4K, OLED or higher-end picture options matter more than an exact 40-inch limit, measure for the 42-inch LG OLED42C6 or a suitable 43-inch model instead.
Recheck availability, price, dimensions, ports and warranty on the exact regional listing on the day you buy. Those checks matter more than a generic “best 40-inch TV” label.
