If your cabinet or bedroom setup requires a true 40-inch screen, start with the Hisense 40-inch Class A4 Series LED 4K UHD Smart Android TV, while checking the regional model suffix and live stock. If you can accept a 42-inch panel, the LG OLED evo AI C6 is the stronger premium choice for contrast, processing and gaming. A 40-inch Amazon Fire TV 2-Series is a budget route, but its current resolution, price and availability must be confirmed for your country.
Quick verdict
| Pick | Screen size | Best for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hisense 40-inch Class A4 Series LED 4K UHD Smart Android TV | 40 inches | A genuine 40-inch 4K television when physical size is non-negotiable | Regional model suffix, stock, warranty and current retailer price |
| LG OLED evo AI C6 | 42 inches | Premium picture quality when a near-size screen is acceptable | Exact 42-inch model, local warranty and available HDMI features |
| Amazon Fire TV 40-inch 2-Series | 40 inches | A low-cost compact smart-TV option | Current resolution, regional availability and live price |
True 40-inch models are now uncommon. What Hi-Fi? noted in its 2025/2026 update that manufacturers have largely moved this category toward 42- and 43-inch screens. That shift explains why the best technology is often found just above 40 inches rather than at exactly 40.

Why 40-inch 4K TVs are harder to find
Panel makers and television brands have concentrated development on 42- and 43-inch formats. Those sizes can use newer OLED and higher-spec LED panels while serving the same small-room and second-room use cases. A nominally small increase from 40 to 42 inches adds only two inches diagonally, but it substantially increases the number of current models available.

Do not assume that every television marketed near this size is 4K. Check the exact listing and regional suffix. The Fire TV 2-Series is identified as a budget compact option, but TechRadar advises confirming the current resolution on the live listing rather than relying on the family name.
The three strongest buying options
Hisense 40-inch Class A4 Series LED 4K UHD Smart Android TV: the exact-size choice
Hisense’s official US 4K UHD catalog lists a 40-inch Class A4 Series LED 4K UHD Smart Android TV. It is the clearest match for a reader who truly needs 40 inches instead of a near-size substitute. The LED panel design prioritizes the practical benefits of an affordable, compact set and avoids forcing you into a 42-inch cabinet fit.
Because model numbers and suffixes can vary by country, compare the full identifier on the retailer page with the regional Hisense catalog before ordering. The suffix may identify a different tuner, operating system, input set or warranty market. Confirm that the listing explicitly says 4K UHD and check the return policy in case the physical dimensions differ from the product photo.
- Choose it when the diagonal measurement is the primary constraint.
- Confirm the number and type of HDMI inputs if you will connect a console, soundbar and set-top box at the same time.
- Check that the smart-TV applications you use are available in your country and support the expected picture and sound formats.
- Compare the supplied stand width with your furniture; a 40-inch diagonal does not guarantee a narrow stand.
LG OLED evo AI C6 42-inch: the premium near-40-inch upgrade
TechRadar’s guide, updated August 19, 2026, names the LG OLED evo AI C6 42-inch as its best 40-inch TV for most people, replacing the C5. LG’s catalog lists the OLED evo C6 from 42 to 83 inches, so the 42-inch version is the smallest member of that current range.
OLED is the premium route when black levels and contrast matter most. Each pixel can control its own light output, so dark scenes do not depend on a backlight remaining partially illuminated. That advantage is most visible in a dim bedroom or movie room, where grayish blacks on an entry-level LED set are easier to notice. The trade-off is that you must accept a 42-inch diagonal and pay for a higher tier of panel and processing.
For gaming, assess the exact regional specification rather than assuming every C6 listing has identical ports or refresh behavior. Look for HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) when those features are priorities. A 42-inch OLED can double as a gaming display, but desk depth, pixel density and text scaling still determine whether it is comfortable as a monitor.

Amazon Fire TV 40-inch 2-Series: the budget smart-TV route
TechRadar identifies the Amazon Fire TV 40-inch 2-Series as a budget compact option. It can be attractive when the purchase price matters more than advanced panel performance, but the live regional listing is essential: verify the resolution, available inputs, operating-system version, warranty and price before paying.

Those compromises may be acceptable for news, casual streaming and a secondary room. They are less suitable if you expect strong HDR highlights, fast competitive gaming or accurate monitor text. Treat this model as a value candidate to validate, not as a universal 4K recommendation.
What 4K means at this size
LG defines 4K UHD as 3840 × 2160 pixels. At 40 inches, that resolution gives a dense image for normal television viewing and can produce crisp interface text when a computer sends a proper 4:4:4 or RGB signal. The panel’s ability to accept that signal matters as much as the pixel count; some televisions process computer input differently from video input.
Resolution alone does not determine picture quality. Panel contrast, color accuracy, grayscale tracking, motion handling and HDR tone mapping affect what you see. A less expensive LED television can still be sharp while delivering weaker blacks or less convincing HDR than an OLED. Compare the entire display system, not the 4K badge.
Choose by panel, HDR and viewing conditions
Panel and contrast
OLED is generally the premium choice for contrast and black levels. LED models, including the exact-size Hisense option, are usually selected for affordability and availability. In a bright room, higher sustained brightness may matter more than perfect blacks; in a dark room, OLED’s pixel-level control becomes more obvious.
HDR formats and brightness
Check which HDR formats the exact regional model accepts and whether your streaming services output them through that television’s apps. Reviewers manually verify that applications deliver supported picture and sound formats correctly, because platform support does not guarantee identical behavior for every app. An HDR logo without sufficient brightness or accurate tone mapping does not ensure a dramatic improvement.

Color and grayscale accuracy
Look for independent measurements of color gamut, color accuracy and grayscale accuracy when available. These checks reveal whether faces, shadows and neutral whites appear natural. A television with a wide color gamut can still look wrong if it is poorly calibrated.
Smart-TV platforms and app compatibility
LG webOS, Samsung Tizen and Google TV generally offer broad streaming-app access, but availability depends on country, account region and licensing. The same service can expose different picture or audio options in an app on one television compared with another. Before purchase, list the services you actually use and confirm each one in the local app store.
Also verify update support, Wi-Fi capability and Bluetooth if you plan to use wireless headphones, a keyboard or a game controller. A compact television that lacks one required connection can cost more to remedy than the initial saving.

Gaming and computer-monitor suitability
Console and PC gaming
TechRadar’s compact-TV testing checks input lag, motion handling, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, VRR and ALLM where supported. Its practical benchmark is that input lag below 20 milliseconds is fine for most people. Competitive players should seek measured results for the exact model and picture mode; casual players may care more about stable VRR and a convenient game mode.
Count your devices before buying. A console, streaming box, soundbar and PC can quickly consume the available HDMI ports. HDMI 2.1 is relevant for consoles or PCs targeting 4K at high frame rates, while older equipment may work perfectly over HDMI 2.0. Check whether the audio-return connection supports your soundbar’s format.
Using a 40- or 42-inch TV as a monitor
A 40-inch 4K screen can function as a computer monitor, but size is only one part of the decision. Sit far enough away that the whole desktop fits without constant head movement, and use the operating system’s scaling controls for readable text. Confirm that the television supports full-chroma computer input, low-latency mode and the refresh rate your graphics hardware can deliver.

TCL’s guidance says a 40-inch TV can suit a monitor setup when it provides suitable HDR, HDMI, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features. Evaluate pixel density, chroma handling, input lag and desk distance together. A large panel placed too close can be tiring even when the image is technically sharp.

| Guidance | Distance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| LG 4K distance table for a 40-inch TV | 4.0 feet | Use as a starting point for a 40-inch 4K screen |
| TCL general 40-inch TV recommendation | 4.92 feet (1.5 meters) | Use as a broader room-planning reference |
These are starting points, not mandatory seating positions. Move closer if you want a more immersive view and your eyesight is comfortable; move farther away if you notice eye strain or prefer a smaller field of view. Measure from your eyes to the panel, not from the sofa to the wall, and account for the television’s stand depth.
How to compare a shortlist before ordering
- Measure the space. Record the maximum width, height, depth and stand footprint. Include clearance for cables and ventilation.
- Confirm the exact model. Copy the complete model suffix from the retailer page and match it with the manufacturer’s regional catalog.
- Verify resolution. Make sure the listing explicitly states 3840 × 2160 or 4K UHD; do not infer it from a product family name.
- Inventory your sources. Count consoles, computers, soundbars, set-top boxes and USB devices, then compare them with the available ports.
- Check gaming requirements. If you need high-frame-rate 4K, look for HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz; for smoother variable frame rates, verify VRR and ALLM support.
- Confirm app access. Check every essential streaming service in your country and note whether the television supports the sound and picture formats you expect.
- Review warranty and returns. A regional suffix can change warranty coverage, tuner compatibility and included accessories.
- Compare the complete cost. Include delivery, a wall mount or sound solution and any price difference between the 40-inch and 42-inch alternatives.
Common pitfalls and fixes
The television is advertised as 40 inches but does not fit
Diagonal size excludes the bezel, stand and rear housing. Re-measure the full product dimensions from the specification sheet, including the widest stand position. If the feet are too far apart, check whether a compatible central stand or wall mount is permitted by the manufacturer.
Missing apps or different audio options
App catalogs and formats are region-dependent. Set the correct country during initial setup, update the television, and check the service’s supported devices list. If an app still lacks a required format, an external streaming device may provide a more consistent software environment, provided you have an available HDMI input.
Blur during sports or games
Motion smoothing can introduce artifacts, while a low-power panel may struggle with bright fast-moving scenes. Try the television’s game or sports preset, disable excessive interpolation, and verify that the source is outputting the intended frame rate. For gaming, use the measured input-lag and refresh-rate data for the exact model.
Small or fuzzy computer text
Enable the television’s low-latency or computer input mode, select the native 3840 × 2160 resolution and use the computer’s recommended scaling. If text remains soft, confirm that the HDMI cable and source are negotiating full-resolution RGB or 4:4:4 output.

Weak built-in sound
Compact televisions have limited cabinet volume. If dialogue is difficult to hear, first adjust the sound mode and disable processing that reduces clarity. A compact soundbar can improve speech, but check HDMI ARC or optical compatibility before buying one.
Which size should you buy?
Choose 40 inches when the fit is fixed
Select the Hisense A4 Series when a strict 40-inch limit, a particular shelf or an existing mount determines the purchase. Its value is the combination of exact sizing and a listed 4K UHD specification. Spend extra time confirming the regional suffix because availability is thinner than it was for older 40-inch generations.
Choose 42 inches when picture quality comes first
The LG OLED evo AI C6 is the logical step up when two additional diagonal inches will fit. Its OLED design and current-generation positioning address the main weaknesses of entry-level compact LED sets: black-level performance, contrast and premium processing. The trade-off is a higher tier of television and a larger physical footprint.
Consider 43 inches if selection matters more than the number
Manufacturers have shifted much of the category to 42- and 43-inch screens. A 43-inch model may offer more current panel and gaming choices than a true 40-inch set, but it must be evaluated on its actual width, stand layout, ports and room distance rather than assumed equivalent.
How professional reviews test compact televisions
TechRadar’s methodology evaluates picture and audio quality, gaming performance, features, brightness, color gamut, color and grayscale accuracy and input lag. Its reviewers use both 4K and HD sources, examining contrast, black levels, color accuracy and motion handling. Where a television supports them, they check HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, VRR and ALLM. What Hi-Fi? also checks whether streaming applications output their supported picture and sound formats correctly instead of treating platform branding as proof of compatibility.
Use those same categories when reading a review: a television can score well for movies but lack the ports needed for a gaming desk, or offer a broad app catalog while mishandling a format you care about. Matching the test category to your use is more useful than relying on a single overall ranking.
Final buying checklist
- Is the diagonal exactly 40 inches, or would a 42-inch screen fit?
- Does the full regional model number explicitly identify a 4K UHD panel?
- Are the HDMI count, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, VRR and ALLM requirements covered?
- Will your streaming services and preferred HDR and audio formats work in your country?
- Is the seating distance close to the 4.0-foot LG or 4.92-foot TCL starting guidance?
- Does the stand or wall mount fit the room, and is the warranty valid locally?
- Is the live price justified after adding delivery and any sound or mounting accessories?
For a strict 40-inch requirement, the Hisense A4 Series is the most direct 4K match. For the best compact picture and gaming potential, accept the 42-inch LG OLED evo AI C6. Treat the Amazon Fire TV 2-Series as a budget candidate only after checking the current regional listing’s resolution and specifications.
