The Insta360 X5 is the clearest documented choice for 360-degree live streaming: Insta360’s support guide lists it for both interactive 360 Live and reframed flat Live through the app, and separately documents a wired webcam workflow with OBS. The Insta360 X4 is also listed for the app modes. RICOH THETA X is a possible wireless RTMP/RTMPS alternative, but the available Ricoh pages do not establish a complete current setup for that model. These are documentation-based recommendations, not results of comparative hands-on testing.
Which 360 camera should you choose for live streaming?
| Camera | What the manufacturer documentation supports | What remains unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Insta360 X5 | App-based 360 Live and Reframe Live; wired webcam streaming through a computer and OBS. | Comparable real-world stream quality, runtime, thermal behavior, latency, and audio performance have not been established. |
| Insta360 X4 | Listed alongside X5 for app-based 360 Live and Reframe Live in Insta360’s X5 Live Stream Tutorial. | Current price, stock, and value relative to X5 are not established here. |
| RICOH THETA X | Archived official specifications list H.264 live-stream video and linear PCM audio. Ricoh describes wireless Wi-Fi streaming using RTMP/RTMPS. | The documentation does not establish a complete current THETA X setup, duration, or exact platform-by-model matrix. |
| Insta360 X6 | Official pages conflict: a general FAQ says app live streaming is not currently supported, while an X6 tutorial describes live modes and says functionality will be supported in subsequent firmware updates. | Confirm support for the exact current firmware before buying for live streaming; the recording specifications do not resolve the conflict. |
For X5 app workflows, Insta360 lists YouTube, Facebook, Kwai, and custom RTMP. Ricoh’s wireless page describes RTMP/RTMPS streaming to YouTube, Facebook, and similar sites, but does not provide a complete model-specific matrix for THETA X. Confirm the destination and setup steps for your exact camera before relying on them.

Choose between 360 Live and Reframe Live
360 Live: let viewers explore the scene
A 360 stream presents a spherical view so viewers can look around within the scene on supported playback platforms. This suits an event or location where the audience benefits from choosing what to look at. It is different from an ordinary fixed camera composition, and the platform must support the intended 360 viewing experience.
Reframe Live: send a conventional view
Reframe Live lets you choose a flat composition from the 360 camera’s view. Viewers receive a conventional framed image rather than controlling the viewing direction themselves. Choose it when you want to direct attention to a speaker, stage, or activity without asking the audience to pan around.

Insta360 lists both modes for X5 and X4 in its app tutorial. Do not assume that a destination, format, or viewing experience supported in one mode also applies to the other.
Insta360 X5: app-based live streaming
Insta360’s X5 Live Stream Tutorial describes connecting the camera to the Insta360 app, authorizing the destination account, and starting a 360 Live, Reframe Live, or RTMP stream. The guide specifies app and camera firmware requirements; those version numbers can change, so check the current tutorial and update instructions for your device before setup.
- Update and verify compatibility. Check the current Insta360 app version and X5 firmware requirements in the official tutorial, then install the required updates.
- Connect the camera to the app. Follow the camera’s current in-app connection prompts and confirm the camera is detected before configuring the stream.
- Authorize your destination. Sign in and grant the required platform permissions, or configure the custom RTMP destination and stream details provided by your streaming service.
- Select the live mode. Choose 360 Live if viewers should explore the spherical image, Reframe Live for a flat composition, or RTMP if you need a custom RTMP endpoint.
- Start the stream and keep the app open. Insta360’s guide says, “During the live stream, please keep the app running in the foreground.” Keep the phone connected and the app in front for the duration of the broadcast.
The guide names YouTube, Facebook, Kwai, and RTMP for these app workflows. Confirm current platform availability and account permissions in the app. Do not apply the 30-minute limit mentioned for certain older ONE R/ONE RS 360-lens configurations to X5; that limit is not stated for X5.

Insta360 X5 as a webcam with OBS
For computer-based streaming, Insta360 documents connecting the camera by wire as a webcam and using third-party software such as OBS. This is distinct from the phone-app live workflow. The X5 OBS guide specifies 2880×1440 at 30 fps to produce a 2:1 panoramic webcam output. X5’s 8K figure is a recording specification, not a promise of 8K live output.
- Connect the X5 to the computer by wire using the connection method and cable specified in the current Insta360 guide.
- Select webcam mode on the camera if prompted, then confirm that the computer and OBS recognize the camera as a video source.
- Add the camera in OBS as a video capture source. Set the source to 2880×1440 and 30 fps for the documented 2:1 panoramic output.
- Configure the destination in OBS. Select the intended streaming platform or custom RTMP server, enter its current stream details, and test the framing and audio before going live.
- Start streaming from OBS after checking that the destination displays the intended 360 panorama rather than treating it as an ordinary flat image.
Insta360’s general FAQ says its 360 cameras do not support HDMI output for live streaming; the documented X5 computer workflow is wired webcam use, not HDMI capture.
RICOH THETA X and wireless RTMP
Ricoh’s archived THETA X specification lists H.264 live-stream video and linear PCM audio. Separately, Ricoh describes a THETA plug-in that connects over Wi-Fi and streams 4K or 2K video using RTMP/RTMPS to YouTube, Facebook, and similar services. Those statements do not by themselves establish the exact current THETA X setup, supported platform list, stream duration, or output settings for each destination. Check current model-specific instructions before choosing it for a particular workflow.

Ricoh warns that shooting can stop automatically if the camera temperature rises. Plan for power, ventilation, and a test stream, especially for a long broadcast; no comparable sustained-runtime or thermal test across these cameras is established here.

Insta360 lists 8K 360 recording for X5, while its OBS guide specifies a 2880×1440, 30 fps webcam setting for 2:1 panoramic output. Recording and live output are separate modes. Use the documented live workflow and settings for the intended stream; do not select a camera based on its maximum recording resolution alone.
Questions to resolve before buying
- Will the audience explore 360, or watch a directed view? Choose an explicitly supported 360 mode for interactive viewing or a reframed flat mode for conventional composition.
- Does the exact model support your destination? Check the current camera guide for the model, app or firmware version, and platform—not just a general claim that the camera can stream.
- What output resolution and frame rate are documented? Separate recording specifications from live output specifications; X5’s OBS guide gives 2880×1440 at 30 fps for panoramic webcam output.
- Can the setup stay powered and connected? App streaming depends on the app remaining in the foreground and an active connection. Ricoh warns that heat can stop shooting.
- How will audio work? The THETA X archived specification lists linear PCM audio, but the available documentation does not provide a comparable audio-input or performance matrix across these options. Verify the exact connections and handling you need.
- Is the X6 live workflow actually available on your firmware? The official support pages conflict, so obtain confirmation for the exact firmware before purchase if live streaming is essential.
Common setup problems
The camera does not appear in the app or OBS
- For the app workflow, check that the camera and app are on compatible versions and that the camera is connected as the current Insta360 guide specifies.
- For OBS, check the wired connection and confirm that the camera is in webcam mode and recognized as a video capture source.
The app stream stops when you switch apps
Insta360 instructs users to keep the app in the foreground during the stream. Return to the app, restore the active connection, and avoid switching away while broadcasting.

The audience sees a flat or incorrectly framed image
Confirm whether you selected 360 Live or Reframe Live, and check that the destination supports the viewing mode you intend. For OBS panoramic output, use the documented 2880×1440, 30 fps setting and verify how the destination renders it before the event.
The stream ends during a long session
Check the live connection and power, and monitor camera temperature. Ricoh specifically warns that elevated temperature can stop shooting automatically. Do not assume the 30-minute limit stated for certain older Insta360 ONE R/ONE RS configurations applies to X5.
