Berkshire Hathaway’s fourth-place homebuilding claim refers to its combined Taylor Morrison and Clayton Properties Group operation—not to Lennar. Berkshire completed its acquisition of Taylor Morrison on July 24, 2026; separately, a September 30, 2026 SEC filing identified Berkshire as a 10% owner of Lennar and reported its holdings in two share classes.
What Berkshire means by “fourth-largest homebuilder”
The rank describes the combined Taylor Morrison and Clayton Properties Group operation. In its July 24, 2026 acquisition announcement, Berkshire and Taylor Morrison said the two businesses delivered nearly 23,000 site-built homes in 2025, operated in 21 states and 52 housing markets, and served more than 700 communities. The release called the combined operation the fourth-largest homebuilding operation in the United States. Berkshire Hathaway and Taylor Morrison acquisition announcement, July 24, 2026.

That is a company description of a combined business, not an independent ranking of Berkshire as a standalone homebuilder. It also counts home closings, not revenue. The distinction matters because Berkshire’s housing operations include businesses beyond the site-built homes in this announcement.
How the combined operation compares with builder rankings
Builder magazine’s 2026 Builder 100 ranks companies by 2025 closings. Its list places Taylor Morrison at No. 6 and Clayton Properties Group at No. 12 as separate builders; it does not assign Berkshire’s combined operation a fourth-place slot. The figures below are the magazine’s reported closings, not the combined company’s separate claim.

The list ranks the individual builders; adding Taylor Morrison and Clayton Properties Group’s reported closings gives a total close to the companies’ “nearly 23,000” combined figure, but the magazine’s published ranks remain individual-company ranks.
What Berkshire owns—and what it does not
Taylor Morrison and Clayton Properties Group
Berkshire completed its Taylor Morrison acquisition on July 24, 2026. The companies said the Taylor Morrison and Clayton Properties Group teams would be integrated while continuing under Taylor Morrison CEO Sheryl Palmer. Berkshire had already owned Clayton Homes, whose broader business includes manufactured and site-built home construction as well as lending and financial services. The combined site-built operation announcement specifically names Taylor Morrison and Clayton Properties Group; it should not be confused with every activity in Clayton Homes.
Rank #2
Berkshire’s 2025 annual report gives Clayton Homes revenue of $12.9 billion and pre-tax earnings of approximately $1.9 billion. Those figures cover Clayton Homes as a business, including its broader activities; they are not a revenue or earnings measure for the combined site-built homebuilding operation. Lennar is a separate investment, not part of the Taylor Morrison–Clayton Properties Group combination. Berkshire’s September 30, 2026 Form 4 identifies it as a 10% owner and reports 26,034,436 Lennar Class A shares and 553,000 Class B shares after transactions through September 30. The form’s designation is “10% owner”; it does not establish an exact combined ownership percentage in this article, so “more than 10%” should not be inferred from adding the two share counts without the relevant class-specific denominator. Berkshire Hathaway Form 4, filed September 30, 2026.
Rank #3
An earlier Schedule 13G was a different snapshot: as of June 30, 2026, it reported 13,111,741 Lennar Class A shares, or 6.2% of that class. It was filed August 14, 2026, before the September transactions recorded in the later Form 4. The numbers therefore describe holdings at different dates and should not be treated as contradictory same-day totals. Berkshire Hathaway Schedule 13G, filed August 14, 2026.

Lennar delivered 82,583 homes in fiscal 2025, making it the second-ranked builder in the Builder 100’s 2025-closing comparison. Its operating approach also differs: as of November 30, 2025, Lennar reported that 98% of its homesites were controlled through options with land banks, land sellers, and joint ventures. That describes how Lennar controlled homesites at that date; it does not mean Berkshire owns or operates Lennar’s homebuilding business. Lennar 2025 annual report.
