BenQ X3100i Review: Is This 4K Gaming Projector Worth It?

The BenQ X3100i is worth considering if you can place a standard-throw projector at the right distance, control room light, and want responsive high-refresh gaming alongside bright, colorful movies. Its headline 4.2 ms input lag applies only at 1080p/240Hz; its 4K gaming ceiling is 60Hz. It is a less compelling fit for a bright living room or for movie viewers who prioritize deep near-black contrast and Dolby Vision.

What kind of projector is the BenQ X3100i?

The X3100i is a 4K UHD, 4LED projector built around gaming features, with brightness and color that can also suit movies and streaming in a dim room. BenQ’s current US specifications list 3,300 ANSI lumens, a 3840 × 2160 resolution, and a 16:9 native aspect ratio. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of the brightness or contrast you will see in every room.

For independent findings, RTINGS reviewed the X3100i in a review first published June 3, 2024, and modified May 11, 2026. RTINGS describes it as strong for gaming and movies when vivid color, brightness and low lag matter, while noting limits in well-lit rooms, near-dark scenes and audio-format passthrough. Its tested unit was manufactured in September 2023, so treat its findings as an independent review of that unit rather than a claim about every possible unit or later firmware.

Will it fit your room and screen?

Check placement before buying. BenQ specifies a 1.15–1.50 throw ratio, 1.3× zoom and vertical lens shift from 40% to 60%. These features allow some adjustment, but do not make the X3100i a short-throw projector: it still needs suitable distance from the screen. Confirm that your intended image size can be achieved from the planned mounting or table position, with enough clearance for cables and ventilation.

BenQ’s AR Projector Planner can help visualize image size and placement; the manufacturer says it works with supported iPhones and iPads and recommends LiDAR-capable devices. BenQ also provides an X3100i ceiling-mounting guide. A ceiling mount is optional, not included by implication; verify compatibility, load rating and installation requirements for any mount you choose. A screen is likewise an optional part of a projection setup. Choose its size and surface for your room light and desired image rather than assuming a particular screen is required or bundled.

Room light is a real constraint

RTINGS found the X3100i bright and colorful in dim rooms, but not bright enough for well-lit rooms. Its 3,300-ANSI-lumen manufacturer rating should not be read as a promise that ambient light will have little effect. For daytime viewing or a room with substantial uncontrolled light, expect the picture to be less convincing than in a darkened space.

How good is it for gaming?

The X3100i’s value as a BenQ X3100i gaming projector depends on the resolution and refresh rate you actually use. BenQ’s US specification page lists these input-lag figures by mode. The low-lag figure applies to 1080p/240Hz, not 4K.

Input mode BenQ-listed input lag Practical implication
3840 × 2160 at 60Hz 16.7 ms 4K gaming is supported up to 60Hz; this is not a 4K/120Hz projector.
1080p at 120Hz 8.3 ms A lower-lag high-refresh option when the console or PC outputs this mode.
1080p at 240Hz 4.2 ms BenQ’s lowest listed lag, conditional on using 1080p/240Hz.

RTINGS confirms support for 4K/60Hz, 1080p/120Hz and 1080p/240Hz gaming. It reports that 1440p at 60Hz and 120Hz is downscaled to 1080p, so a console set to 1440p will not retain that resolution on this projector. Check the output modes of your device and decide whether you prefer higher resolution at 60Hz or lower resolution at a higher refresh rate.

The projector uses HDMI 2.0b, not HDMI 2.1. For a buyer seeking 4K/120Hz, that distinction matters: the relevant 4K gaming mode here tops out at 60Hz. BenQ lists HDMI connectivity for Switch, PS4/PS5 and Xbox. Its US product information also says a standard Nintendo Switch can connect directly by USB-C; Switch Lite is not supported for that connection.

How does it handle movies and HDR?

RTINGS found the X3100i vivid and capable for movies, especially when brightness and color are priorities. Its main cinema weakness is contrast in near-black scenes: dark details and shadow depth are less convincing than on the best home-theater projectors. If you mostly watch films in a fully dark room and care more about black levels than gaming responsiveness or brightness, that trade-off deserves particular weight.

RTINGS reports HDR10 and HLG support, but no Dolby Vision. That matters if Dolby Vision support is a requirement for your movie library or Xbox use. Do not assume that a 4K HDR input means every HDR format is supported; BenQ’s listed 4K HDR input compatibility extends to 3840 × 2160 at 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60Hz.

What about streaming and sound?

RTINGS describes the included QS02 streaming dongle as a step up from the QS01 supplied with the X3000i, citing Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, native Netflix support and USB passthrough. Retail box contents can vary by region, so check the listing for the market where you are buying rather than assuming every package contains the same dongle.

For audio, RTINGS notes that the projector fails to pass through many lossy audio formats. Buyers routing sound through a receiver or soundbar should confirm that their specific sources, connection path and desired formats work as expected; the projector’s streaming convenience does not by itself establish compatibility with every home-theater audio setup.

How long should the LED light source last?

BenQ lists 20,000 hours in Normal mode and 30,000 hours in Eco or SmartEco. These are manufacturer-rated light-source life figures tied to the named modes, not a guarantee that every component will last that long or that brightness will remain unchanged throughout.

BenQ’s X3100i FAQ says, “There is no need to replace it during the normal usage lifetime of the projector.” The qualification matters: BenQ says LED replacement is not user-serviceable and directs owners to a service center. This is not a lamp that buyers should expect to replace themselves.

How does it compare with the X3000i and other options?

RTINGS calls the X3000i the X3100i’s closest predecessor and describes the newer model as a slight but noticeable upgrade, with higher brightness peaks, better contrast, a wider color gamut and the more capable QS02 streaming dongle. That makes the X3000i relevant if available at a meaningful discount, but a price comparison should account for the streaming hardware and region-specific package contents.

RTINGS also identifies the BenQ X500i as a short-throw alternative and the ViewSonic PX701-4K, Epson Home Cinema 3800 and Valerion VisionMaster Pro 2 as comparison context. Those models should not be treated as interchangeable based on a name or headline resolution alone. Compare the actual versions and local prices on these points:

  • Placement: throw distance, zoom and lens shift determine whether the projector fits your room.
  • Gaming: compare supported resolution at each refresh rate and the input lag for that exact mode.
  • Picture priorities: weigh usable brightness in your room against contrast in near-black scenes.
  • Formats and connections: check HDR support, streaming features and audio passthrough for your devices.
  • Total cost: compare current regional prices and verify what accessories and streaming hardware are actually included.

Is the BenQ X3100i worth it?

It is a strong candidate if your setup can accommodate its standard-throw placement, you can dim the room, and responsive gaming matters enough that 1080p/120Hz or 1080p/240Hz is useful to you. Its 4K/60Hz mode, vivid image and streaming features also make it a credible all-purpose projector for that kind of room.

It is harder to recommend if your room is consistently bright, you want 4K/120Hz, you expect 1440p gaming to remain 1440p, or your movie priorities center on deep black levels and Dolby Vision. A TechRadar guide updated September 17, 2026 listed $2,799 / £2,099; treat those as dated guide prices, not guaranteed current offers, and check the price and package in your region before deciding.
