Were the Benin Bronzes made from German brass? In part, according to a 2023 geochemical study: brass associated with the German Rhineland was a principal source of metal for the works. But “Benin Bronzes” is a customary name, not a precise description of every alloy, and the evidence does not show that every object was made from German metal. Edo casters made the artworks in the Kingdom of Benin, in what is now Nigeria.
Are the Benin Bronzes actually bronze?
Not necessarily. “Benin Bronzes” is the familiar collective name for a varied group of artworks. More than 700 chemical analyses available to Skowronek and colleagues for their 2023 study indicate that most are brass or leaded brass, sometimes with small amounts of tin. The figure refers to prior analyses considered by the study, not to objects newly tested in that paper. The study’s published article explains the distinction between the common name and the measured alloys.

Brass is primarily copper and zinc; bronze is conventionally a copper alloy with tin. The objects’ name therefore should not be treated as a claim that every work has the same composition.

The German connection concerns the supply of metal, not the identity of the artists. Skowronek and colleagues compared trace elements and lead-isotope ratios in manillas—ring-shaped metal trade objects—with earlier chemical analyses of Benin artworks. Their 2023 study found strong similarities between the Benin material, early Portuguese “tacoais” manillas, and lead-zinc ores associated with Germany’s Rhineland. They identify the Rhineland as a principal source of the metal in those manillas and a principal source of metal used for the Benin Bronzes.

That is a regional supply-history finding. It does not establish that every object was cast from German metal, or that every part of a mixed alloy came from the same place. In leaded brass, lead-isotope results primarily track the lead component and its supply; they cannot, by themselves, establish the origins of copper or zinc. A 2026 study in Archaeometry makes this limitation explicit in its discussion of isotope analysis. Its account of the multi-analytical method also underscores that compositional evidence must be interpreted with other evidence.
Were manillas the only source of metal?
No. The 2023 authors describe manillas as a major source, but say differences in trace-element patterns do not support concluding that they were the only source. Brass rods, hollowware, other traded metal goods, mixing, and recycling complicate any object-by-object account. “Principal source” is more accurate than “the sole source.”

The study situates manillas in European trade to West Africa and argues that Edo metalworkers selected and used imported material. Reducing that history to “German brass” alone would leave out both the wider Atlantic trade and the skill and decisions of the casters.

Who made the artworks, and what were they used for?
Edo artists made the works in the Kingdom of Benin. The imported origin of some metal does not change the artworks’ makers or cultural context.

Royal memorial heads
A record from Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK) says a royal memorial head was commissioned by the Igun Eronmwon, the Guild of Brass Founders, for a royal altar. Brass and ivory were materials reserved for the oba, or ruler, and memorial heads formed part of the royal ancestor-cult cycle. SPK’s account of the object and its return describes its history.
Palace plaques
The same SPK account describes a 16th-century relief plaque made using lost-wax casting and originally displayed on palace courtyard pillars. Its imagery included rulers, dignitaries, Portuguese figures, animals, and cosmological motifs. That is one object’s documented history, not a date or description that applies to the whole collection.

Can alloy analysis date or authenticate an individual object?
Not on its own. Composition can contribute to an investigation, but brass content or an isotope match does not by itself prove an object’s age, authenticity, or provenance. Works span multiple centuries, and later local production and export or replica production add further possibilities.

The authors call for additional well-documented objects to strengthen statistical reliability. Its results should be read as an initial application, not a universal test that can settle an individual object’s history.

Why does 1897 matter to the objects’ history?
British troops conquered Benin in 1897, looted the royal palace, and exiled Oba Ovonramwen. Thousands of objects were shipped to London as war booty and sold, shaping the provenance of many works now held outside Nigeria. SPK records the looting of the royal memorial head described in its account. In 2022, two objects from Berlin’s Ethnological Museum were handed over to Nigeria, as SPK documents.
The metal-source question and the provenance question are related but distinct: chemical analysis can inform what metal may have been used, while an object’s documented history helps establish its movement, ownership, and context.
