An AI-based road survey run by the Bengaluru North City Corporation reportedly found that 82.1% of the 2,493.5 km of roads it assessed were rated good or satisfactory. That share is measured by road length, not by the number of individual roads, and the headline’s “82%” is the same figure rounded down. The numbers come from news coverage of a report published by The Hans India in 2026. The survey’s method, rating criteria and validation have not been described in the coverage available, so the figures should be read as reported findings rather than independently verified measurements.
What the survey covered
- Area: roads across seven divisions and 72 wards under the Bengaluru North City Corporation.
- Length assessed: 2,493.5 km.
- Method: described as AI-based. The coverage does not name the tool or provider, the imaging or inspection method, the inspection dates, or the rating thresholds.
Reading the 82.1% figure
The headline figure combines two rating categories: roads rated “good” and roads rated “satisfactory.” It does not mean that every kilometre is free of defects. The coverage reports the following lengths alongside it:

The listed lengths cannot be added up into one clean breakdown. Good and minor-defect roads together total 2,033.9 km (81.6%), which does not match the 82.1% good-or-satisfactory share. If the 82.1% is correct, roads in the satisfactory category would be about 620 km, and adding the 607.1 km with minor defects would exceed the total length surveyed unless the two categories overlap. The coverage does not explain which reading applies, so readers should treat the 82.1% as the headline measure and the separate lengths as individual reported figures, not as parts of a complete split.

The headline uses “82%” because it rounds 82.1% down. The body figure is the more precise one.

Potholes, utility damage and future work
- Potholes: the survey reportedly identified 14,393 potholes, an average of 5.8 per kilometre across the surveyed length.
- Utility-work damage: the report records road damage linked to utility work, including work carried out by water and electricity agencies. The coverage does not say how many kilometres this affects.
- Future improvement: roads that need work may be considered for future improvement projects. The coverage does not describe a repair schedule, a budget, or a commitment that any specific road will be repaired.
What the coverage does not establish
- The survey methodology, including how the AI system captured and classified road surfaces.
- The rating rubric and the thresholds that separate “good,” “satisfactory” and “minor defects.”
- When the inspections took place, which matters for roads repaired or damaged since then.
- Whether any independent check was made on the pothole count or the ratings.
- How road segments affected by recent utility work were rated.
- An on-record statement from corporation officials. The coverage available does not include a named quotation.
For readers in the corporation’s area, the most reliable statement the reporting supports is narrow: a survey of 2,493.5 km recorded that most of the surveyed length was rated good or satisfactory, and it counted 14,393 potholes. Whether those ratings match what drivers, cyclists and pedestrians experience on a given street is a question this survey alone cannot answer.
