Behind the Scenes: How the Marvel Rivals Art Team Builds a Character

Marvel Rivals character art begins with the question of what makes a hero unmistakably themselves. The art team traces that identity through Marvel stories and screen portrayals, selects the visual anchors players should recognize, then reinterprets them for the game’s stylized 3D world. Cyclops shows how that intent carries from costume concept into rigging, animation and visual effects.

Where character design starts: Marvel history and identity

The team says it begins with Marvel Comics storylines and specific representations of a character, then broadens its references to include films, games, animation and toys. The aim is to build a fuller interpretation rather than rely on a single depiction.

From those references, the artists identify the features that carry recognition: costumes, powers, logos and weapons, as well as the immediate impression a hero makes. The team names Hulk’s size and Spider-Man’s agility as examples. As it puts it, “Strengthening and maintaining these elements is essential to ensuring that players can instantly recognize and call out the character’s name at first glance.”

How the team balances familiar anchors with a new design

Recognition does not mean copying one comic panel exactly. The design has to preserve what makes the character legible while fitting Marvel Rivals’ own visual identity, gameplay role and narrative context. The interviews describe those artistic considerations, but do not present them as a formal scoring system or disclose a standardized approval checklist.

Cyclops: classic references, futuristic treatment

For Cyclops, the team drew on classic comic designs while pursuing a futuristic, fashionable and streamlined look. It points to the costume cut, gold tactical straps and the iconic energy-suppressing visor as parts of that reinterpretation. The visor remains a strong recognition anchor, but the design still has to support expression and alternate appearances.

Costumes as a continuing design problem

Art director Dino Ma describes using mood boards built from keywords and reference images, and working with Marvel Games to settle key iconic imagery. Costumes can draw on original designs and Marvel’s wider history, while sometimes responding to a seasonal theme; the first season’s Eternal Night Falls vampire theme is one example. Ma summarized the challenge this way: “A crucial element of our costume design process is how to quickly find unique and innovative design ideas.”

How a concept becomes a 3D character

The interviews frame modeling and texturing as part of the move from concept to implementation, but do not specify software, texture maps or a universal asset recipe. Dino Ma gives a broader account of the visual approach: “The real key to our success was keeping a 2D mindset throughout the development process, adhering to the stylistic characteristics and aesthetics of 2D art.” He connects that approach to expressive, exaggerated forms and bold color, informed by anime, animated films, graphic packaging and Marvel’s history.

Ma says the rendering approach combines stylized textures with physically based rendering (PBR) and non-photorealistic rendering (NPR), retaining detail in service of the stylized look. This is his explanation of the team’s visual system, not a claim that every character or asset uses identical settings.

Rigging around the design

Cyclops’s rig was described as relatively standard, but his default visor made the eye area a special concern. The rig needed to leave room for expressive animation and for alternate costumes that omit the visor. That is a concrete example of how a costume decision can affect technical implementation and performance.

How animation grows from basic movement to abilities

For Cyclops, the team says it establishes idle, running and jumping first. Those basic actions set the character’s movement style; skill animations are developed from that foundation. The team prioritizes function while drawing on signature comic moves, so recognizability has to work alongside the action each ability needs to communicate.

How visual effects communicate character and story

Effects are not merely decoration layered onto a finished hero. The team says they are central to character identity: “In Marvel Rivals, visual effects are central to representing each character’s identity.” Its description combines a unified comic rendering framework with materials, intellectual-property elements and dynamic rhythm.

Hero entrances and MVP highlights can extend that visual language into a short narrative, linking a costume, an animation and the environment. The official Art Vision Vol. 03 diary introduces character concepts and VFX, while the more detailed workflow descriptions come from interviews with the art team and Ma.

Keeping heroes recognizable in variants and combat

Alternate costumes can change a hero’s look, but the team says it preserves core recognition points: body silhouette, logos, signature weapons and color schemes. That creates a practical tension: a variant needs a distinct design, while the character still needs to read as the same hero.

Visual clarity also matters during multiplayer combat, when players need to identify characters amid movement and effects. The interviews identify readability as a concern but do not give a numerical benchmark or a formal test threshold. They explain the design priorities, not the full internal validation process.

What the interviews do—and do not—reveal

Together, the team’s account and Ma’s style explanation show a connected chain: gather references, choose recognition anchors, reinterpret the design, carry its intent through 3D work, build animation from basic movement, and use effects to reinforce identity and story. The available accounts do not establish a current 2026 team roster, production schedule, character-development duration, per-character budget, or specific software and tools. They are interviews about selected parts of the creative approach, not a complete internal production manual.
