Before You Buy a Social Media Tool, Decide What You Need It to Do

Before paying for a social media tool, name the work you need it to handle: scheduling posts, replying to people, measuring results, monitoring conversations, or coordinating a team. Then check that it supports your exact social profiles and that the necessary features are included in a plan you can afford.

Start with the job, not the feature list

Write down the recurring task that is taking too much time or slipping through the cracks. A tool that does many things may still be a poor fit if it does not solve that particular problem on the accounts you use.

  • Planning and publishing: You need a calendar, post scheduling, or publishing across connected profiles.
  • Replies and community care: You need a shared place to manage comments or messages and keep responses from being missed.
  • Performance measurement: You need insights or reports to understand how content is performing.
  • Conversation monitoring: You need social listening to follow topics, mentions, or broader conversations.
  • Team coordination: You need approvals, permissions, routing, or a shared workflow for people working on social accounts.

If your need is occasional scheduling for one profile, a service centered on team approvals or customer-care workflows may be more than you need. Conversely, a publishing calendar alone will not solve a problem with responding to messages or reporting results.

Check support for your exact profiles

Do not treat a platform name as proof that every account type or function is supported. Verify the particular profile you plan to connect and the feature you expect to use with it. Buffer’s pricing page, for example, defines a connected social account as a channel and gives profile-specific feature information: Buffer pricing and feature matrix.

Make a short checklist before comparing plans:

  • Which social networks and account or profile types must connect?
  • Which of those profiles need publishing, replies, analytics, or listening?
  • Does the tool support that function for each profile, or only some of them?

Match plan features to your workflow

Feature availability can change by plan. Hootsuite’s plan information describes differences spanning publishing and reporting, automation and deeper listening, team approvals and customer-care workflows, and enterprise governance. It also notes that some features require multiple user seats. Check the current plan details rather than assuming a feature shown in a broad product overview is included in the tier you are considering: Hootsuite plans.

For a small operation, the important question is not how long a feature list is. It is whether the tier covers the job, accounts, and people in your actual workflow. If several people need access, look for the permissions, review steps, routing, and seats they will need—not just the ability to connect profiles.

Calculate cost using your real account and user count

Compare the bill for your expected setup, not a headline price detached from how you work. Buffer says its billing is per channel and offers monthly or annual payment. Hootsuite offers monthly and annual billing on some plans. The billing unit and available terms differ by provider, so check current vendor terms at your expected number of connected accounts and users: Buffer pricing and Hootsuite plans.

Buffer’s official pages describe planning, scheduling, publishing, replies to comments, insights, and collaboration features; its small-business overview provides more context: Buffer for small businesses. These and Hootsuite are examples of tools with different documented capabilities, not a ranking or recommendation. Check each provider’s current feature matrix and pricing before subscribing.

Use a task-led shortlist

  1. Write one sentence describing the bottleneck. For example: “We need one place to schedule posts for our connected profiles,” or “Our team needs a review step before posts go live.”
  2. List the profiles and people involved. Include the exact account types and the number of users who need access.
  3. Filter for the required task and profile support. Rule out candidates that do not support the necessary function for the profiles you use.
  4. Check plan gates and workflow details. Confirm the tier, seats, permissions, and any account limits required for your setup.
  5. Compare the resulting cost and billing period. Use the same account and user assumptions for each candidate, and verify terms on the vendor’s current page.

If you promote brands, handle disclosures separately

A social platform’s built-in disclosure widget does not by itself guarantee that an endorsement disclosure is effective. The Federal Trade Commission advises considering placement, readability, and clarity; it says responsibility for clearly and conspicuously disclosing a material connection rests with the influencer and the brand, not the platform. See the FTC’s endorsement-guide FAQ.
