Four-burner layout and stated heat input
What the 15 MJ/hr rating tells you
Each of the four burners is specified at 15 MJ/hr, with 60 MJ/hr total. That number describes the gas input rating, not a guaranteed cooking temperature, preheat time or fuel-consumption figure in your circumstances. Actual results depend on ambient conditions, regulator and gas supply, hood position, food load and the condition of the burners and seals.
The four-burner arrangement gives the chassis a large-format layout, but the specification alone cannot establish how evenly the barbecue heats or how well it holds a low temperature. No independent test data for those questions was identified for the BDMG420BA.
Hotplate and grill materials
BeefEater lists a porcelain-enamel-coated cast-iron hotplate and an enamelled cast-iron grill, both described as rust-resistant. Cast iron can provide substantial thermal mass, while the enamel coating is intended to protect the surface, but those are material characteristics rather than a test result for this particular appliance. When inspecting a used unit, look for chips, deep corrosion, warping and blocked burner ports instead of assuming the surfaces remain in original condition.

Hood and temperature gauge
The roasting hood is vitreous enamel and includes an integrated temperature gauge. The hood makes covered cooking possible, and the gauge gives you a reference at the lid. Neither the product page nor the available manual establishes the gauge’s accuracy, the temperature uniformity under the hood or the time required to reach a target temperature.
Quartz Start ignition
Quartz Start is the named ignition system. The manufacturer uses reliability language in its product copy, but there is no independent ignition test for this review. A buyer examining a used BDMG420BA should ask to see the ignition operate and confirm that every burner lights correctly rather than relying on the system name.
Will it fit your patio and cooking area?
At 1,630 mm wide, 574 mm deep and 1,145 mm high, this is not a compact balcony barbecue. Measure the complete route, not just the final standing position.
- Measure the operating space. Mark a rectangle at least 1,630 mm by 574 mm and check that the hood can open without striking a wall, roof support or overhead shelf.
- Check the delivery route. Measure gates, doors, corners, stairs and lift entrances. Include the trolley’s turning space; a straight-line width measurement is not enough for a large cabinet barbecue.
- Confirm the floor. The trolley has lockable castor wheels, so the surface needs to be sufficiently level for the barbecue to remain stable when parked and locked.
- Plan cylinder and hose placement. Verify that the LPG bottle, regulator and hose can be installed according to the instructions and local requirements without being crushed or stretched.
- Allow working clearance. Leave room to stand at the front, open the hood and remove cooking surfaces for cleaning. Do not treat the published depth as the total space needed while operating.
The cabinet trolley provides enclosed storage space, but the manufacturer does not list fold-down side tables. If you normally keep trays or utensils beside the barbecue, plan a separate heat-safe work surface.
Fuel choice: LPG standard, natural gas only after professional conversion
LPG setup
The BDMG420BA is listed as an LPG model. Confirm that a seller includes the correct regulator, hose and other required hardware for the particular unit and region; a used barbecue may be missing parts even when the cabinet and hood are present. Never assume that a hose or regulator from another barbecue is compatible.

Natural-gas conversion kit BD6192
BeefEater’s parts listing identifies the BD6192 Discovery 1000E/ES natural-gas conversion kit as compatible with the BDMG420BA. The same listing says conversion is to be carried out by a qualified gas service agent. This is not a casual nozzle swap or a suitable DIY project: gas type, injectors, pressure and leak checks all have to match the appliance and local rules.

- Confirm that the barbecue’s model plate is BDMG420BA and that the BD6192 listing still specifies compatibility.
- Arrange a qualified gas service agent before purchasing the kit or barbecue.
- Have the agent install and test the conversion, including leak and operating checks required in your jurisdiction.
- Keep the conversion paperwork with the barbecue for future owners and warranty or service discussions.
If your property already has a compliant natural-gas outlet, the conversion may make the barbecue more convenient, but the installation cost and local certification requirements are not established by the product specification.

- Verify identity. Photograph the model plate and confirm it reads BDMG420BA, not a visually similar Discovery variant.
- Check completeness. Confirm the hood, hotplate, grill, burner components, warming components if advertised, trolley panels, castors, knobs, ignition parts, regulator and hose are present.
- Inspect enamel. Look for cracked or lifted enamel on the hood, hotplate and grill. Small cosmetic marks differ from exposed metal or sections that are already flaking.
- Inspect burners and gas paths. Look for corrosion, blocked ports, damaged tubes and evidence of insect nests or water ingress. Do not light a visibly damaged appliance.
- Test ignition safely. With the seller following the manual and local safety practice, confirm that the ignition produces a spark and that each burner lights and remains lit.
- Check the hood and gauge. Make sure hinges move freely, the lid closes squarely and the gauge is present. The gauge’s accuracy is not independently established, so treat it as an indicator rather than a calibrated instrument.
- Roll and lock the trolley. Verify that every castor turns, the locks engage and the cabinet is not twisted or unstable.

Warranty: historical wording is not a current promise
