Beaumont Independent School District’s managers approved a reported four-year lease worth about $11.19 million for 14,585 Apple devices, replacing an aging Chromebook fleet. Under the plan, pre-K through second-grade students get iPads, while students in grades 3–12 and teachers get MacBook Neo laptops. District officials said the decision reflects device condition and support costs as well as financing, repairs, management and estimated resale value—not simply a comparison of purchase prices.
What Beaumont ISD approved
Beaumont Enterprise reported on Oct. 1, 2026, that Beaumont ISD approved a four-year lease with an estimated total value of about $11.19 million. The district expects annual payments of about $2.8 million. The reported allocation is:

Beaumont Enterprise reported district support figures totaling $469,576: $212,574 in repairs since January 2025, $220,040 for IT staff time during the 2025–26 school year, and $36,962 in overtime for device repair and support. The district also reported completing 6,642 repairs last year. These numbers are the district’s reported figures; the story does not establish them as an independently audited comparison of full lifecycle costs.
Harrah characterized the burden this way: “It’s almost half a million dollars just supporting a fleet that is barely moving or working.” She also argued that workplace familiarity supports the move, saying, “There is not one environment in the workplace that uses a Chromebook.” That is her stated view, not an independently established claim about all workplaces.

How Beaumont says it compared alternatives
According to the local report, the district considered cost per device, financing, residual value and buyback options, repair and warranty coverage, device management, and financial stewardship. IT Director Ryan Deloney reportedly tested devices and reviewed their specifications, quality and construction. For grades 3–12, the alternatives named in the report were MacBook Neo, Lenovo and Asus.
The district described Asus as meeting instructional needs and offering competitive upfront pricing, but said its four-year cost was higher and plastic parts would require more repairs. The report says Beaumont judged the Neo to have the strongest performance and reliability among the devices it evaluated, and cited AppleCare+ access and financing terms. Those are conclusions attributed to district officials and their procurement process; they are not independent test results.

Financing and estimated resale value
In the district’s reported comparison, Lenovo financing had a minimum rate of 4% and a guaranteed buyback of $10 per device. Beaumont said its procurement terms included 0% financing for MacBook Neo laptops and 0.99% for iPads. Harrah estimated MacBook Neo resale value to outside bulk buyers at $180–$250 per device, compared with up to $10 for current Chromebooks.
These rates and resale estimates are specific to Beaumont’s procurement and are not consumer financing offers or guaranteed resale values. The local report describes the district’s rationale, but the executed lease and full comparison spreadsheet were not available in the report.

What the deal does—and does not—show
Beaumont’s decision reflects its reported fleet condition, support burden, financing terms, device-management considerations and estimates of future value. Another district would need to weigh its own device age, repair history, software and management needs, instructional requirements and available lease terms. The Beaumont figures alone do not prove that Apple devices are cheaper or better for every school system.

The district also cited Apple Learning Coach certification as a potential source of 43.5 hours of continuing education or professional development credit for teachers, according to Apple education leadership executive Kasey Powers as reported by Beaumont Enterprise. That is a stated training benefit, separate from the device and financing comparison.

What MacBook Neo means in this plan
MacBook Neo is Apple’s laptop selected for older students and teachers in Beaumont’s plan; it is distinct from the iPads assigned to younger students. Apple identifies it as a 13-inch laptop with a Liquid Retina display and A18 Pro chip, and advertises up to 16 hours of battery life. Those specifications and battery-life figure are Apple’s product claims, not results from Beaumont’s reported procurement evaluation or independent testing. See Apple’s MacBook Neo product page.
