Beast of Reincarnation Review: Is This Katana-and-Companion RPG Worth Playing?

Beast of Reincarnation is worth watching—and, for players who enjoy demanding swordplay paired with tactical companion commands, worth playing. Its central idea is unusually focused: Emma handles fast, real-time katana combat while her dog-like companion Koo supplies abilities chosen from a command menu that briefly slows the action. That pairing gives every encounter two layers of decision-making instead of treating the companion as a passive damage bonus.

The game launched on August 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Xbox Cloud, with day-one inclusion in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate according to Xbox Wire. PlayStation confirmed the PS5 launch, and TechRadar lists PC among the platforms. Availability, pricing and subscription terms can vary by region and can change, so verify the current store page before buying.

What is Beast of Reincarnation?

Beast of Reincarnation is an action RPG developed by Game Freak and directed by Kota Furushima. Furushima describes it as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG” in the Xbox Wire announcement. The phrase is more than a slogan: the design is built around the relationship between Emma and Koo, with each character covering a different part of combat.

The setting is Japan in the year 4026, after blight has reshaped civilization and nature. The blight can turn ordinary landscapes into dense, overgrown forests and produce monsters called malefacts. Emma was born afflicted by blight, giving her plant-related abilities. She works as a Sealer, hunting malefacts and absorbing blight. Koo is himself a malefact, so their alliance is an unusual starting point for the journey toward the Beast of Reincarnation, identified in the official description as the source of all blight.

  • Year 4026, post-apocalyptic Japan: Travel through a beautiful yet harsh post-apocalyptic world. Experience the ever-changing scenery, in the blighted forest, and the Bosses that rule this world. • Beast of Reincarnation Digital Deluxe Edition: The Digital Deluxe Edition includes Black and Brown Shiba Skins for Koo, “Oni’s Hat” for Emma, Emma’s sword “Big Dipper”, 100,000 Amber (in-game currency), plus a number of vegetable seedlings!
  • Beast of Reincarnation: Beast of Reincarnation and receive a Brown Shiba Skin for Koo plus 30,000 Amber (in-game currency)!

That premise establishes a post-apocalyptic world without requiring you to know anything beyond the opening setup. The important practical question is whether the combat partnership remains interesting after the initial novelty. The available descriptions and review coverage suggest that combat feel, atmosphere and the emotional story are the strongest reasons to try it, while repeated dialogue, limited cosmetic customization and a potentially overlong story are the main reservations.

Xbox Wire’s developer interview provides the one-person, one-dog framing and core combat details. PlayStation.Blog’s launch announcement supplies the PS5 date and additional examples of Emma’s traversal abilities.

How Emma and Koo’s combat works

Emma’s katana is the immediate, timing-based layer

Emma fights in real time with a katana. Movement, attacks, defense and positioning happen continuously, so you are responsible for reading an enemy rather than simply selecting an attack from a menu. Her plant-like hair is also a practical tool: the official description presents it as useful for crossing difficult terrain and performing aerial attacks. Exploration and combat therefore share the same visual language; the blight that altered the environment also informs how Emma moves through it.

Parries fuel Koo’s commands

A successful parry earns points that can be spent on Koo’s skills. You select those skills from a command menu, and the game slows while you make the choice. This creates a deliberate loop:

  1. Read an enemy’s attack and attempt a parry.
  2. Use the points gained from successful parries to access Koo’s abilities.
  3. Open the command menu when the situation calls for a tactical response.
  4. Choose the command that complements Emma’s current position and the enemy’s state.
  5. Return to real-time swordplay and repeat the process.

The result is not a conventional “hero plus automated pet” arrangement. Emma’s timing determines how often Koo can contribute, while Koo’s command set gives you a reason to pause and evaluate the battlefield instead of attacking continuously. Players who dislike parry-focused combat may find the loop demanding; players who enjoy learning enemy timing should find a meaningful payoff in mastering it.

Customization changes the emphasis, not the basic partnership

The developer identifies three equipment and progression elements: Spirit Stones, new katanas for Emma and Charms for Koo. These systems let you shape how the pair approaches fights while preserving the central division of labor—Emma remains the active duelist and Koo remains the command-selected tactical partner. The supplied material does not establish a complete list of effects or a definitive best build, so treat these as customization categories rather than a promise of a particular meta setup.

Exploration, traversal and the blighted world

The world is not simply a backdrop for arena fights. PlayStation’s official description highlights Emma’s hair as a traversal aid for difficult terrain and as a way to launch aerial attacks. That gives exploration a mechanical connection to combat: the same character trait that helps you navigate can also create attack opportunities.

Blight can transform the world during exploration. Areas may become dense, overgrown forests, and malefacts emerge from the altered environment. This supports a setting that feels unstable rather than a series of static ruins. The premise also gives the story a clear forward question—what is the Beast of Reincarnation and why is it connected to all blight—without requiring spoilers about later turns.

Do not approach the game expecting a purely scenic walking tour. The official material emphasizes traversal tools, enemy hunting and changing environments, while the combat design makes observation and positioning important. If you prefer a world that rewards attention to terrain and visual changes, the setting is one of the game’s stronger hooks.

Difficulty options and who they suit

Beast of Reincarnation offers Normal, Hard and Story difficulty settings. Story Mode is not merely an easier preset: the developer says it provides more forgiving parry timing and reduces enemy damage. That makes it the most suitable choice if you want to prioritize the narrative or find strict reaction windows frustrating.

  • POST APOCALYPTIC JAPAN — Explore the haunting beauty of Japan in the year 4026, where flourishing forests emerge from a blighted wasteland filled with danger, mystery, and discovery.
  • CUSTOMIZE YOUR PLAYSTYLE — Shape Emma’s abilities through skill trees, gear, and spirit stones, allowing you to specialize in ranged, stealth, aggressive, or hybrid combat approaches.
  • EPIC BOSS HUNTS — Battle formidable Bosses from across the world, capture their powers, and grow stronger on a journey to confront the legendary Beast of Reincarnation.
Mode What the official description establishes Best fit
Story More forgiving parry timing and reduced enemy damage Players who want the setting and story with less combat pressure
Normal Standard difficulty option; detailed numerical modifiers are not stated Most players seeking the intended balance
Hard Higher challenge option; detailed numerical modifiers are not stated Players who want stricter execution and tougher encounters

The absence of published numerical modifiers means you should not infer exact damage multipliers or parry-window lengths. The meaningful distinction that is documented is Story Mode’s more forgiving timing and lower incoming damage. You can use that mode to learn the Emma-and-Koo rhythm without treating every missed parry as a restart.

Story, tone and presentation

The Japan of 4026 combines familiar cultural references with speculative decay. Blight has overwhelmed parts of the landscape, and the contrast between plant growth and monstrous malefacts gives the world a strong visual identity. Emma’s condition and Koo’s status as a malefact also create an immediate source of tension: the person tasked with sealing monsters is travelling with one.

TechRadar’s reviewer praised the atmosphere and emotional story. Those are the reviewer’s impressions, not an objective guarantee that every player will respond the same way. The same review identifies repeated dialogue and a story that can feel overlong. If you prefer tightly paced campaigns with little repetition, those criticisms are relevant when deciding whether to commit to a long playthrough.

Cosmetic customization is another reported limitation. TechRadar’s reviewer found the options limited, so players who expect extensive outfit or appearance systems should moderate those expectations. The documented customization emphasis is on Spirit Stones, katanas and Koo’s Charms—combat-oriented choices rather than a large wardrobe.

PC performance: what the review does and does not show

TechRadar’s PC reviewer tested the game on a system with a GeForce RTX 4080 Super, an RX 9060 XT-based PC and a Lenovo Legion Go S with a Z1 Extreme processor. In that specific test setup, the reviewer reported no 21:9 ultrawide support, frame-rate dips in busy scenes and difficulty maintaining 60 frames per second on the handheld at low settings.

Those observations should not be treated as a universal PC benchmark. They describe one reviewer’s hardware, settings and review build, and the review was first published in July 2026. A different graphics card, driver, display resolution, power profile or later patch can produce a different result. The practical takeaway is to check the current PC system requirements, recent patch notes and return policy before purchasing if ultrawide support or a locked 60 fps target is essential to you.

For handheld PC buyers, the reported Legion Go S result is a warning to set expectations carefully: low settings did not let the reviewer hold 60 fps consistently. That does not establish performance on every handheld, but it does suggest that portable play may involve compromises in image quality or frame rate.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose PS5 if you want a straightforward console experience

PS5 is the clearest choice for players who already use Sony’s console and want the game on a television without managing PC settings. The PS5 launch date is explicitly announced, and the platform is part of the game’s core release rather than a later port.

Choose Xbox if you value Game Pass access or cloud play

Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Xbox Cloud give the Xbox ecosystem the broadest set of play locations in the official announcement. Day-one Game Pass Ultimate inclusion can reduce the cost of trying the game if you already maintain that subscription, but confirm that the title remains included and that cloud access is offered in your region before relying on it.

Choose PC if you need settings flexibility

PC is appropriate when you want adjustable graphics settings, a choice of display resolutions or the ability to play on a desktop and compatible handheld. The trade-off is that the reviewer reported no 21:9 support, busy-scene frame-rate dips and sub-60-fps performance on a Z1 Extreme handheld at low settings. Those findings are hardware-specific, but they make current system requirements and return terms especially important for PC buyers.

Who is Beast of Reincarnation for?

  • Parry-focused action players: The combat loop rewards learning enemy timing and turns successful defense into resources for Koo.
  • Players who want an active companion: Koo’s abilities are selected through commands rather than left entirely to automation.
  • Story-first players: Story Mode lowers incoming damage and makes parries more forgiving, while the reviewer praised the emotional narrative.
  • Fans of altered natural environments: Blight-driven forests, malefacts and Emma’s traversal abilities tie the setting to gameplay.
  • Players willing to accept limited cosmetics: The documented customization is primarily combat-oriented, and TechRadar’s reviewer found cosmetic options limited.

Who may want to wait?

  • You dislike reaction-based defense: Parrying is central because it generates the points used for Koo’s skills.
  • You require extensive appearance customization: The available review perspective identifies limited cosmetic choices.
  • You prefer very compact stories: TechRadar’s reviewer felt the story could become overlong and noted repeated dialogue.
  • You need guaranteed ultrawide or handheld 60-fps support: The reviewer’s PC and handheld observations do not establish that those targets are met.
  • You want a fully documented build meta before starting: The official material names Spirit Stones, katanas and Charms but does not publish a complete effects list in the supplied information.

How it compares with other action RPGs

The useful comparison is not a claim that Beast of Reincarnation is universally better than another named game. It is a fit test based on the systems that define this one.

If your priority is… What Beast of Reincarnation offers Question to ask yourself
Parry-focused sword combat Real-time katana fighting in which successful parries generate Koo-command points Do you enjoy practicing enemy timing instead of relying mainly on blocking or ranged attacks?
A tactical companion A command menu that slows combat while you select Koo’s skills Do you want a companion whose abilities require active decisions?
A post-apocalyptic story Japan in 4026, transformed by blight and populated by malefacts Does a world altered by overgrowth and mutation appeal to you?
Flexible challenge Story, Normal and Hard modes, with forgiving parries and reduced damage in Story Would an easier timing window help you enjoy the story?
Cosmetic collecting Customization categories centered on Spirit Stones, katanas and Koo’s Charms Are combat effects enough, or do you need a large wardrobe and appearance system?

This framing also clarifies the game’s identity. It is not simply an action RPG with a dog attached, nor a turn-based game disguised with real-time animation. Its distinctive choice is to make defensive timing the resource that unlocks tactical commands.

Buying checklist

  1. Pick your platform. Use PS5 for a console-focused setup, Xbox for the ecosystem and Game Pass option, or PC for adjustable settings and cross-device flexibility.
  2. Check the current store listing. Verify regional price, edition, stock and any subscription inclusion on the platform you intend to use.
  3. Check PC requirements if applicable. Compare your GPU, CPU, memory, storage and display target with the current listing rather than assuming the reviewer’s hardware represents your system.
  4. Decide how much challenge you want. Story Mode is the documented option for more forgiving parries and lower damage; Normal and Hard are available for players seeking more pressure.
  5. Set expectations about customization. Plan around combat-oriented upgrades and do not buy expecting a large cosmetic wardrobe.
  6. Consider your tolerance for pacing. The strongest review praise concerns combat, atmosphere and emotion; the main pacing concerns are repeated dialogue and a story that may feel long.

Verdict: promising, distinctive and close to great

Beast of Reincarnation has a clear reason to exist. Emma’s responsive katana combat and Koo’s command-selected abilities are interdependent, and the parry-to-resource loop gives that relationship mechanical weight. The blighted 4026 setting, traversal-focused plant abilities and emotional story provide a strong context for the fights.

The reservations are equally specific. The available review perspective reports repeated dialogue, limited cosmetics and an overlong-feeling story, while PC testing on particular hardware found no ultrawide support, dips in busy scenes and difficulty holding 60 fps on a Z1 Extreme handheld at low settings. None of those findings should be generalized to every platform or computer, but they are legitimate decision points.

Choose it if you want a story-driven action RPG where mastering parries directly expands your tactical options, and select Story Mode if strict timing would get in the way. Approach with more caution if cosmetic collecting, flawless ultrawide support or a very concise campaign matters more to you than combat depth and atmosphere.
