For strata owner-occupiers, its clearest differences from Contents Standard are that accidental damage at home and electrical motor burnout are included rather than optional, and its advertised temporary-accommodation limit is higher. Both tiers list cover for owner fixtures in a strata scheme, so that benefit alone does not make Plus the better fit. Your quote, excess, options and applicable CGU policy documents determine whether it suits your household.
What Contents Plus covers—and what the public summary can tell you
BCU describes Contents Plus as its premium contents cover. Its public summary lists events including theft and vandalism, fire, flood and rainwater run-off, storm and storm surge. It also lists benefits such as temporary accommodation, food spoilage, storage, moving, identity theft, contents away from home and contents in transit. These are advertised benefits, not a substitute for the complete policy wording or a promise that a particular claim will be paid.

BCU defines general contents as belongings kept in and around the home that are not permanently attached to the structure. Contents insurance is about the household’s belongings and the cover shown on its policy schedule; it should not be assumed that strata building insurance covers your personal contents. Check the strata policy and your own insurance documents to understand where building cover ends and your contents cover begins.

BCU’s comparison table identifies owner fixtures in a strata scheme under both tiers. It does not establish from the summary alone which fixtures qualify or the conditions and limits that apply. Check the PDS and Certificate of Insurance for the definition and your schedule.

Temporary accommodation if a covered event makes your home unliveable
BCU says CGU covers reasonable temporary accommodation costs when you own and live in a home that is part of a strata or similar scheme and a covered event makes it unliveable. BCU’s public footnote gives limits of up to $500 for Contents Standard and up to $2,000 for Contents Plus. Those summary limits do not establish that a particular claim qualifies: check the applicable policy wording, conditions and schedule.
Valuables and belongings taken outside the home
Valuable Contents
BCU says the combined limit for works of art, collections, jewellery and watches is $2,500 unless you add the Valuable Contents option. Review the items and values you want insured against the policy terms and schedule; do not assume the general contents sum insured removes this category limit. Valuable contents are not covered while in storage, according to BCU’s help page.

Portable Contents
Portable Contents is a separate optional benefit for items taken outside the home. BCU states a limit of up to $10,000 per item unless the item is separately listed for a higher amount. Other geographic limits and exclusions apply. A laptop or piece of jewellery being listed among household contents does not, by itself, establish cover for every loss away from home; check the option, any item listing, location limits and exclusions in your policy documents.
Contents in storage
BCU says general contents may be covered in storage only if CGU is notified in advance and accepts the arrangement. Valuable contents are not covered there. If you plan to store belongings, confirm acceptance before relying on cover.

Electrical motor burnout: check the appliance and use conditions
BCU states that appliance motors up to 15 years old may be covered for motor burnout, provided they are not under warranty or used in a business. This is a summary condition, not confirmation that any particular appliance or breakdown is covered. Check the policy wording for definitions, exclusions and claim requirements.

BCU’s public pages do not provide a completed quote or enough information to conclude that Plus is better value for every owner-occupier. Compare your own quote for each tier and check the following against the documents that apply to the policy:

- Premium and excess: Compare the actual quoted premium and the excess that would apply to the claims you are concerned about.
- Contents sum insured and settlement basis: Confirm the amount insured and how contents are valued or settled under the policy.
- Options: Check which benefits are included, which are optional, and which options you have actually selected.
- Strata-specific details: Verify how owner fixtures are defined and the conditions for temporary accommodation.
- Special items and off-premises use: Assess whether the stated valuables limit, a Valuable Contents option, Portable Contents or separately listed items fit your belongings and routines.
- Eligibility and exclusions: Read the conditions and excluded events or circumstances, rather than relying on the public benefit list.
- Applicable documents: Match the PDS version and Certificate of Insurance to your policy’s issue date and schedule.
BCU cautions that excesses and exclusion periods may apply and directs customers to the Certificate of Insurance and PDS for detailed terms. Its PDS directory identifies a current CGU Home Insurance PDS; BCU says customers whose policy was issued before 20 May 2025 should contact CGU for the earlier PDS and related documents. The policy wording, premium, excess and full exclusions cannot be established from BCU’s product summary alone.
