Draw the operating area, inspect the zones and assigned formations, choose a tactic for each zone, and use the battle information panel to decide whether the plan is plausible. If one zone is weak, move more battalions into it or make the zone smaller. During execution, reshape a zone if the line begins to overextend.
That is the basic loop, but it is not the only way to command. Zone Orders handle formation-level control, while Timeline orders and direct unit commands let you intervene more closely. The useful beginner skill is knowing when to let a formation execute a plan and when to take over a particular regiment, battalion, or company.

What Battleplan is designed to do
Battleplan is a single-player, real-time WWII operational strategy game set in Western Europe. You command divisions and subordinate formations through historical-style battles rather than running a nation. The central tasks are drawing offensives, coordinating infantry and armored forces, managing artillery and engineers, maintaining supply, and reacting as the battlefield changes.
Recommended Free Tools
The formation structure is hierarchical: divisions contain headquarters, regiments, battalions, and companies. The force roster described by the publisher includes infantry, tanks, engineers, anti-tank guns, artillery, and scouts. You can restructure formations, requisition and upgrade units, and hire or fire officers. Missions run in real time, with pausing and fast-forward available, so you can stop the action to redraw a plan or inspect a developing attack.

Supply and terrain are not background decoration. Logistics and the condition of supply lines affect what a formation can sustain, while elevation and difficult terrain influence local combat. A drawn objective therefore needs a route and a support plan, not just an arrow pointing at an enemy position.
Choose how much control you need
Battleplan offers several command scales. Zone Orders are an optional area-based method for directing formations; they do not replace Timeline orders or direct orders to individual units. Treat the choice as a control decision rather than a simple beginner-versus-expert progression.
| Approach | Command scale | How it organizes orders | What execution feels like | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zone Orders | Entire formations and their subordinate units | Draw an area, divide it into zones, assign a tactic to each zone | Units in each zone carry out the selected tactic when the plan is executed | Large operations where you want coherent movement with less repetitive order entry |
| Timeline orders | Formation-level actions arranged over time | Orders are placed on a timeline rather than tied only to a drawn area | Useful for sequencing actions and timing a larger operation | Attacks that need planned phases or specific timing |
| Direct unit orders | Individual regiments, battalions, companies, or other units | Give a specific unit a specific command | You retain close control instead of relying on zone-level autonomy | Rescuing a weak flank, exploiting a local opening, or handling a task a broad plan cannot express |
You can combine these methods. A division can run a Regimental Plan while you issue a direct order to a battalion that must hold a bridge, protect an exposed flank, or support an attack that the zone plan did not allocate adequately.

How to draw a Regimental Plan
The developer describes the Regimental Plan as the default Zone Order. The plan begins with an area you draw on the map. That area is divided into multiple zones according to the number of regiments involved, creating separate responsibilities inside one operation.
- Select the formation and begin a Regimental Plan. Start at the formation level when your intent is to coordinate several regiments rather than micromanage every company.
- Draw the operating area. Enclose the ground the formation is expected to seize or control. Keep the first shape practical: it should represent the ground the assigned force can cover, not every objective you might want eventually.
- Inspect the automatic division into zones. In the publisher’s example, each infantry regiment receives a zone. Divisional headquarters and support elements occupy a safer reserve area rather than being pushed into the leading edge.
- Check who is assigned to each zone. Confirm that the regiment or supporting battalions expected to make the local attack are actually associated with that zone. A visually attractive shape is not useful if the combat power is elsewhere.
- Choose a tactic for every zone. Select the posture that matches the local risk: aggressive ground-taking or a conditional advance.
- Hover over each zone and read its information. Review the predicted attack and defense outcomes, participating divisions, soldier totals, elevation change, difficult terrain, and local enemy strength before executing.
- Resize or reallocate before committing. If the panel indicates that a fortified zone is likely to fail, assign more battalions to it or reduce the area those battalions must cover.
The result is a set of zones of responsibility rather than one undifferentiated front. That division gives each regiment a manageable local task while leaving headquarters and support elements in a reserve position when the layout calls for it.

Why the shape matters
A zone is both an objective and a workload. Making it wider increases the ground the assigned force must cover; making it narrower concentrates that force. The same number of soldiers can look adequate in a small zone and inadequate in a broad one, especially against fortifications or difficult terrain. Draw the boundary around ground that the formation can plausibly attack and hold with its available support.
Pick the tactic that matches the risk
The two documented Zone Order tactics communicate different risk tolerances. Neither is universally best.

| Tactic | Behavior described by the publisher | Use it when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seize Ground | Pushes aggressively to capture territory even when the force is outnumbered or may overextend | The ground is valuable enough to justify pressure and you are prepared to reinforce or accept exposure | The zone can outrun its flanks, supply, or supporting formations |
| Balanced Hold | Advances only when flanks are secure and the force is not outnumbered | You need a more conditional advance and want local strength and flank security to gate movement | The formation may wait instead of taking a fleeting opportunity |
Think of Seize Ground as an explicit willingness to accept operational risk, not as a damage bonus. Balanced Hold is a requirement for favorable conditions, not a guarantee that an attack will succeed. Set the tactic after considering the zone’s enemy strength, terrain, elevation change, and the ability of adjacent zones to keep pace.
How to read the battle information panel
Hovering over a zone opens the documented battle information panel. It is a planning aid that estimates a local contest from the forces and terrain currently assigned; it is not a guaranteed battle result.
- Predicted attack and defense outcomes: Use these to identify a zone that is likely to fail or one that has a reasonable margin. They are predictions based on the current plan, not a promise about the eventual combat.
- Participating divisions: Check whether the formations you expected to contribute are actually included in the local fight.
- Soldier totals: Compare the available personnel with the enemy presence and with the amount of ground inside the zone.
- Elevation change: An uphill approach can make an apparently equal force less attractive than the raw headcount suggests.
- Difficult terrain: Forests, rough ground, or other difficult areas can change how much usable combat power reaches the objective.
Read the panel comparatively. If one zone has a weak predicted attack while a neighboring zone is strong, the first question is not whether the entire plan is bad; it is whether the weak zone is too large, underassigned, or pointed at a stronger position. Adjust one variable at a time so you can see which change improves the local estimate.

Fixing a weak attack
The official example describes a likely failing attack against a fortified zone with too many enemies. It gives two direct remedies: add battalions or reduce the area those battalions must cover.
Reallocate battalions
- Hover over the zone and confirm that the weakness is local rather than caused by a missing formation or an unfavorable approach.
- Open the zone’s assignment panel.
- Drag additional battalions into the zone’s panel, as shown in the developer’s example.
- Recheck participating divisions, soldier totals, and the predicted attack outcome.
- Make sure the battalions you moved are not leaving another zone unable to hold its own objective.
Reduce the zone
- Identify the portion of the drawn area that is consuming effort without being essential to the immediate objective.
- Adjust the boundary so the assigned force attacks a narrower piece of ground.
- Hover over the revised zone and compare the predicted result and terrain details.
- Leave adjacent zones with boundaries they can actually support; a narrow local success can still create a gap if neighboring areas are too broad.
Use both remedies when necessary: concentrate more battalions on a smaller initial objective, then expand after the position is secure. The panel can tell you that the local balance has improved, but it cannot remove the need to watch supply, flanks, and the behavior of neighboring formations.
Reshape zones during execution
Zone boundaries are not permanently frozen once the operation starts. The Zone Orders diary says that you can adjust a zone shape by right-clicking while hovering at a zone edge, including during execution. That is useful when an advance begins to overextend or when the formation needs to capture a particular piece of ground that the original outline did not include.
The cited diary is dated May 11, 2026, so verify the exact pointer behavior and current interface in the build you are playing. The operational principle remains clear: pause if necessary, inspect the exposed boundary, reshape the zone to a defensible extent, and then reassess the local information panel. Do not keep an ambitious outline merely because it was drawn before contact.
Signs that a zone is overextending
- The leading units have moved far ahead of adjacent zones.
- A flank is no longer covered by a neighboring formation.
- The zone includes more ground than the assigned battalions can occupy and defend.
- The advance is pulling units away from a viable supply route.
- The attack is pressing into difficult terrain or an elevated position without enough supporting strength.
When one of these signs appears, a smaller zone or a more conditional tactic can preserve the operation. A direct order to a nearby unit may also be appropriate if a specific gap must be covered immediately.

Combining formation plans with direct intervention
Zone Orders are designed to reduce repetitive management during large operations. Slitherine describes them as a way to assign objectives to entire formations and direct large-scale operations efficiently. That efficiency does not prevent closer intervention.
Let the plan run when the problem is organizational
Use a Regimental Plan when several regiments need related objectives, the boundaries are understandable, and you want the formation to execute a coherent posture. This is especially useful for dividing a broad front into responsibilities while keeping headquarters and support elements safer behind the line.
Take control when the problem is local
Issue an individual-unit order when a single battalion must hold a crossing, when an anti-tank gun needs a particular firing position, or when one regiment has to stop while its neighbor catches up. Direct control is also appropriate when the panel shows that a zone-level assignment cannot express the precise task you need.
Use both without creating contradictory orders
Before giving a direct command, check what the unit’s zone and tactic are asking it to do. A unit pulled out for a local emergency may leave its original zone understrength. After the immediate task is complete, restore or revise the broader plan so the formation is not operating under two incompatible intentions.

A drawn line is only one part of an operation. The product description emphasizes logistics and terrain, and the listed force types imply different jobs inside a plan.
Best Value
- Supply: Keep the objective connected to a sustainable route. An advance that reaches the map position but outruns supply can become harder to hold.
- Infantry: Infantry regiments provide the bulk of zone occupation and are the clearest fit for the example in which each regiment receives a zone.
- Armor: Tanks can add force to an attack, but their value depends on the ground and the support available in that zone.
- Engineers: Engineers are relevant when the approach or defensive works make raw numbers misleading.
- Artillery and anti-tank guns: Support weapons need positions and targets that fit the local plan rather than being scattered simply to increase a unit count.
- Scouts: Reconnaissance helps you interpret the enemy strength and terrain information before committing the main body.
The information panel gives local figures such as soldier totals, elevation change, and difficult terrain. Use those figures with the wider logistics picture; a favorable local estimate does not make a remote objective easy to supply.
Timeline orders and when to use them
Timeline orders are the other named planning system in the official material. They are an alternative to Zone Orders, not a prerequisite for using them. Choose a timeline when the sequence and timing of formation actions matter more than dividing a map area into simultaneous local responsibilities.
For example, a plan may need one formation to prepare, another to advance after a flank is secure, and a third to exploit the opening. A Zone Order can express the areas and tactics, while Timeline orders can express a deliberate sequence. The right choice depends on whether your main problem is spatial organization, timing, or direct control.
Mission scale and release information
Publisher descriptions give a sense of scope, but they are not independent measurements of performance or historical accuracy. The figures also differ in precision and date.
| Claim | Source and date context | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 11 historical campaign missions and two tutorial levels | Slitherine article dated October 2, 2026 | Planned launch-build content spanning D-Day operations through Operation Varsity; later updates could change the total |
| 10+ historical battles | Matrix Games product page accessed in 2026 | A broader product-page description that is less precise than the dated 11-mission statement |
| Hundreds of thousands of troops | Matrix Games product page accessed in 2026 | Publisher wording about simulated scale, not an independent count or performance test |
| One week to one month per mission | Matrix Games product page accessed in 2026 | The stated range for mission length |

Quick Recap
A complete first-battle workflow
- Pause and identify the formation you actually need to move. Decide whether the task belongs to a division, a regiment, or a single unit.
- Choose the order method. Use a Regimental Plan for a broad, area-based operation; use Timeline orders when sequencing is central; use direct orders for a narrowly defined local task.
- Draw a restrained area. Include the immediate objective and enough room for a defensible advance, not every desirable follow-on position.
- Inspect the generated zones. Verify each regiment’s responsibility and the location of headquarters and support elements.
- Set the tactic by risk. Choose Seize Ground only when you accept the possibility of overextension; choose Balanced Hold when flank security and local superiority should gate movement.
- Read every zone’s panel. Compare predicted attack and defense, participating divisions, soldier totals, elevation, difficult terrain, and enemy strength.
- Correct the weakest local problem. Add battalions, reduce the zone, or change the assignment rather than redrawing the entire plan automatically.
- Execute while watching the map and supply. Pause or fast-forward as appropriate, but return to normal speed when contact or a boundary problem requires attention.
- Intervene directly when the situation becomes specific. Give a unit an individual order if a bridge, flank, gun position, or temporary stop cannot wait for the broader plan.
- Reshape during the battle. If the line stretches too far, use the documented zone-edge adjustment method in the current build and reassess the panel.
