For most existing Android phones, removing the battery is not a supported way to create a battery-free kiosk. Keep the battery installed unless the manufacturer documents battery-out operation for that exact model. If a project needs fixed-power operation, use managed kiosk settings—or consider a device specifically designed for it. Samsung documents a No Battery Mode for Galaxy Tab Active3 and later rugged tablets; that is a tablet option, not evidence that ordinary phones can run safely without a battery.
What “battery-free Android” means in practice
Android can support products designed to operate from external power without an internal battery. That is different from taking the battery out of a retail phone: the hardware, firmware and power reporting must support the intended configuration.

The Android Open Source Project’s guidance for Android 9 and later describes the default state when no battery is detected: the system reports battery present as false, status as unknown, remaining capacity as 0 and health as unknown. Android continues to treat the device as charging from external power and does not shut down for low battery. Manufacturers can adjust reporting through kernel or Health HAL changes. AOSP recommends accurately reporting whether the external AC or USB supply is online through a Linux power_supply driver or Health HAL. AOSP: Support batteryless devices.
This is platform-integration guidance for device builders, not a promise that a particular phone will boot or behave properly with its battery removed. Unless the phone’s manufacturer documents battery-out operation for that exact model, treat it as unsupported.

Setting up a conventional Android kiosk
Android Enterprise describes dedicated devices as fully managed devices for a specific purpose, including kiosks and digital signage. Lock-task mode can keep a device within approved apps. Its cookbook also covers keeping the display on and configuring fully managed devices to stay on while plugged into AC, USB or wireless power. - Use supported power. Keep the battery installed and use the charger and power arrangement specified for the exact device.
- Manage the device for its role. Use Android Enterprise dedicated-device controls or an equivalent supported configuration to restrict the device to the kiosk app.
- Set screen behavior. The cookbook shows an app using
FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON. For fully managed devices on Android 6.0/API 23 or later, it documentsSTAY_ON_WHILE_PLUGGED_INfor AC, USB and wireless power. - Plan for unplugging. Monitor charging state; the cookbook notes that an administrator can be alerted if a device is unplugged.
- Test the installation before leaving it unattended. Check boot and recovery after power interruption, app restart behavior, network recovery, screen duty cycle, mounting and cable strain, ambient temperature and remote monitoring. These are deployment checks, not verified results for any specific phone.
Samsung’s documented No Battery Mode
Samsung documents No Battery Mode for Galaxy Tab Active3 and later models. Its Knox Manage instructions use the Knox Service Plugin to enable related device controls and the “Enable No Battery Mode” policy. Samsung says the mode limits CPU usage and is intended to support safer extended use on fixed continuous power while helping prevent battery swelling. Check the exact tablet model, software, Knox management setup and regional availability before buying. The cited support applies to the named rugged-tablet line; it does not establish that the mode works on arbitrary Android phones.
What a removable battery does—and does not—offer
A removable battery can simplify service: power down, unplug, replace a worn pack or rotate in a charged spare. Follow the model’s own instructions. For example, HMD’s 105 (2024) guide says to use an original rechargeable battery on removable-battery devices and to switch off and unplug before removing the cover or battery. It warns that metal objects can short battery contacts. The guide also says not to attempt removal on its non-removable-battery devices and to use a compatible charger. Removability is about replacement and serviceability; it is not proof of battery-out operation, continuous-charging suitability or unattended reliability. Confirm those behaviors with the manufacturer for the exact model.
The European Commission’s 2023 impact assessment says that less than 10% of mobile phones released to the market in 2019 had a user-replaceable battery, and none of Europe’s best-selling smartphone models in 2019 did. Those are historical 2019 figures, not current market-share data. The assessment notes that easy battery removal was more common in feature phones than in smartphones and tablets, and that replaceability can make secondary batteries easier to use. Risks in long-running installations
A 2018 PlugWatch field study followed 16 Samsung J110H phones in a 142-day deployment in hot, humid Zanzibar. The authors reported visibly swollen batteries in 8 phones, with 6 backs pushed loose, and some degree of screen burn-in in 10 phones. They also calculated downtime at approximately 8% of total deployment time. The paper describes one modest deployment; these results illustrate possible maintenance concerns but are not failure rates for current phones or other environments. For a real installation, account for battery inspection or replacement, heat, screen wear, and recovery from power, network or app interruptions. The study also recorded frequent app restarts and phone reboots in its deployment; it emphasizes the operational importance of dependable recovery, not a general expected reboot rate for Android devices.

Decision guide
- Using a phone you already own as a basic kiosk: Leave its supported battery installed; provide compatible external power, kiosk management, screen-on behavior, monitoring and a maintenance plan.
- Need quick battery swaps or spare rotation: Choose an exact model with an officially documented replaceable pack, and source compatible genuine spares. Verify charging and software behavior separately.
- Need fixed-power operation and want a documented battery mode: Evaluate a supported Galaxy Tab Active tablet with No Battery Mode, confirming eligibility before purchase.
- Building a product that must have no internal battery: Design the power system and Android integration for that use, including correct reporting of external charger status as described by AOSP.
