Bathymetric mapping and underwater photogrammetry document different parts of a submerged ruin. Bathymetry measures depth and terrain—usually with acoustic sensors—and produces a spatially referenced surface showing relief, extent and position. Photogrammetry reconstructs visible surfaces from overlapping photographs, producing an image-textured 3D model, point cloud or photomosaic. For most serious ruins projects, bathymetry establishes the site in its wider topographic setting while photogrammetry records accessible walls, objects and architectural details. Use both only when the project needs both scales and can support the additional control, processing and field time.
What each method actually records
The most important distinction in bathymetric mapping vs. underwater photogrammetry is the evidence each method measures. A bathymetric survey samples depth and position, then turns those observations into a terrain surface. An underwater photogrammetric survey infers three-dimensional geometry from overlapping images of surfaces that a camera can see.

| Decision axis | Bathymetric mapping | Underwater photogrammetry |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | What is the shape, depth and relief of the submerged terrain or site footprint? | What do the visible structures and surfaces look like in a scaled, image-based 3D record? |
| Typical evidence | Acoustic or lidar depth measurements processed into a bathymetric surface. | Overlapping photographs processed into a point cloud, mesh, textured model or photomosaic. |
| Spatial reach | A vessel or uncrewed platform can cover survey swaths; coverage depends on sensor geometry, navigation, depth and the survey plan. | Coverage depends on the camera route, visibility, access, lighting and sufficient overlap over every feature of interest. |
| Detail and appearance | Strong for relief, depth and site-scale position. Bathymetry alone does not show photographic surface appearance. | Can preserve image texture and visible features, subject to image quality, lighting and coverage. |
| Critical controls | Sensor setup and calibration, navigation, spatial reference, sound-speed correction, water levels, quality control, uncertainty and processing. | Image overlap and viewpoints, lighting, camera stability, visibility, scale or control points and processing settings. |
| Best ruins use | Site context, terrain, spatial extent, broad relief and detecting features beyond a diver’s visual range. | Detailed recording of accessible visible walls, objects, carvings, hull elements and architectural surfaces. |
This comparison synthesizes the methods described by NOAA’s Standard Ocean Mapping Protocol, NOAA Ocean Exploration, U.S. Navy archaeological field guidance and Massachusetts underwater-resource standards. The achievable result still depends on the site and survey design.

A rendered sonar surface can show that a mound, debris field or hull outline rises above the surrounding bottom, but it cannot be described as an equivalent photographic record of masonry, tool marks or paint. Conversely, a beautifully textured 3D model may document one courtyard or wall face in detail while saying little about the ruin’s position on a reef, its surrounding scour channel or the full debris field.

Choose the method from the decision you need to make:
- Site extent and terrain: choose bathymetry when you need a georeferenced plan of the bottom, relief around the ruin or a repeatable baseline for change detection.
- Visible construction detail: choose photogrammetry when the question concerns courses of stone, joinery, inscriptions, cargo, hull structure or other surfaces that can be photographed from overlapping viewpoints.
- Both scales: combine them when a broad map must be tied to detailed models of selected structures and the project can maintain compatible coordinates, dates and metadata.
Do not present one output as a substitute for the other. A bathymetric surface is terrain data; a photogrammetric model is image-derived geometry with appearance information where the camera obtained adequate views.
How to plan a bathymetric survey
NOAA’s protocol treats acquisition and delivery as a chain of controls rather than a single sonar pass. The same discipline is needed when the target is an archaeological ruin.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →1. Define the coverage and resolution
State whether the survey must map the entire site, a surrounding safety zone, approach channels or only a construction feature. Select a sensor and line plan that provide the required range, resolution and swath coverage. Systems covered by NOAA’s protocol include multibeam, single-beam, phase-discriminating sonar and lidar. A broad swath can efficiently establish context, while a focused high-resolution survey may be needed around a wall, wreck or collapsed section.
2. Establish positioning and a spatial reference
Record the horizontal and vertical reference system before acquisition. Positioning errors can shift a feature, distort comparisons between dates or make a detailed model impossible to place on the site plan. Retain the navigation configuration, antenna or transducer offsets and any transformations used to deliver the final grid.
3. Calibrate and document the sensor
Perform the manufacturer’s setup and calibration checks and record maintenance status. For multibeam work, verify mounting geometry, alignment and the timing relationship between sonar and navigation. Keep calibration results with the project metadata instead of treating them as disposable field notes.
4. Correct for sound speed and water level
Sound speed varies with the water column and affects beam pointing and depth calculations. Collect and apply appropriate sound-speed information. Account for tides or other water-level changes where they affect the vertical datum. A depth value without its reference surface and corrections is not sufficient for a defensible archaeological map.

6. Process and deliver traceable products
Deliver the bathymetric grid or surface with coordinate reference, acquisition dates, sensor and vessel or platform details, processing history, density or coverage information and an uncertainty statement. Preserve raw observations when policy and storage permit. A shaded-relief image is useful for interpretation, but it should be accompanied by the underlying spatial data and its limitations.
Multibeam, single-beam and side-scan are not interchangeable
Multibeam sonar sends many beams in a fan-shaped swath and is commonly used to map submerged topography. Single-beam systems measure along narrower tracks and may require denser line spacing to represent complex relief. Side-scan sonar displays acoustic-return intensity and can highlight objects or texture on the bottom; it is not the same product as bathymetric depth.
Massachusetts guidance distinguishes bathymetric depth and position data from side-scan imagery. Side-scan can help locate a fallen object, hull fragment or boundary that deserves closer inspection, while bathymetry directly describes depth and topography. Label the products separately in maps and archives.
How to document ruins with underwater photogrammetry
NOAA defines photogrammetry as “a method of approximating a three-dimensional (3D) structure using two dimensional images.” In practice, the quality of the model depends less on the number of photographs alone than on whether every surface is captured with stable, well-overlapped views and enough visual texture for the software to match.
1. Set the recording objective
Decide whether the deliverable is a scaled orthophoto, a textured mesh, a point cloud, a photomosaic or a set of measurements. Identify the walls, objects, cavities and elevations that must be visible. This determines the route, lens, lighting, scale and amount of processing.
2. Design a route before entering the water
NOAA describes collecting hundreds or thousands of overlapping still images along a planned route with a diver or remotely operated vehicle. Plan passes from above, from the sides and, where safe and permitted, inside a structure. Keep the camera distance and orientation as consistent as conditions allow, then add converging views around corners, openings and relief that a single pass would occlude.
3. Capture overlap, not a slideshow
Each image should share recognizable features with neighboring images. Move slowly enough to avoid motion blur and maintain overlap as the subject changes scale. The U.S. Navy’s Methods and Guidelines for Archaeological Fieldwork discusses camera and lighting placement for photomosaics and the importance of image overlap. Its operational examples are field guidance, not universal settings: water clarity, current, camera and lens, desired ground-sampling distance, lighting and platform stability all change the correct spacing.

Use lighting that reveals texture without creating large blown-out reflections or deep shadows. Keep strobes or video lights mounted consistently and avoid stirring sediment into the camera’s working distance. In turbid water, shorter camera-to-subject distances may preserve detail but require more passes; in clear water, a wider route may be practical. Record visibility and lighting conditions because they explain gaps and changes in apparent color.

5. Add scale and control
Place measurable scale bars or other targets where they will be visible from multiple images, and survey their positions when georeferencing matters. The National Park Service publications index identifies an underwater structure-from-motion comparison at the East Key Construction Wreck that used machined scale bars. That reference supports the use of purpose-built scale artifacts for scaled recording, but it does not establish a universal accuracy percentage.
6. Check coverage before leaving
Review images for blur, backscatter, missing faces and insufficient overlap. Re-shoot hidden sides, doorways, undersides and transitions while the diver or ROV is still deployed. A model cannot recover geometry that no image captured.
7. Process transparently
Use the chosen photogrammetry software to align images, generate a sparse and dense point cloud, build a mesh and apply texture or orthomosaics as appropriate. Record image counts, camera settings when available, scale-bar coordinates, rejected images, alignment failures, processing versions and coordinate transformations. Export a model that can be inspected without the original project file, plus the photographs and metadata needed for future reprocessing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat equipment is needed?
A basic photogrammetric kit is a camera in a housing rated for the working depth, stable mounting, suitable lighting, scale bars or control targets and a way to navigate a repeatable route. The camera itself is central, but it is only one part of the measurement system. Verify housing depth, lens behavior behind the port, battery endurance, lighting attachment, mount rigidity and the ability to recover image files before committing to a field plan. NOAA’s overview does not endorse a consumer model or a particular brand.
Bathymetric work adds a depth sensor, navigation and positioning, mounting hardware, calibration capability and processing software. Vessel, remotely operated and autonomous platforms are options when the site is too deep, extensive or hazardous for a diver. The Navy guidance emphasizes matching equipment to objectives and conditions: “Use survey equipment appropriate for the survey objectives and environmental conditions.”
For uncrewed marine vehicles, ISO 25451:2026 sets technical requirements and guidelines for seafloor mapping. Treat it as a reference for system planning and documentation rather than proof that any particular vehicle will meet a project’s accuracy or coverage requirement.
Which method works in low visibility?
Neither method has a blanket advantage. Photogrammetry needs enough visibility for the camera to resolve features and enough overlap for image matching. Very cloudy water, backscatter, darkness, moving vegetation or featureless sediment can produce holes or failed alignment. You may still document a small close-range area by reducing camera distance, improving controlled lighting and making additional passes, but the accessible area and detail will shrink.

Bathymetry can operate when a camera cannot see the structure, but acoustic quality still depends on frequency, beam geometry, vessel motion, navigation, sound speed, bottom conditions and survey layout. A sonar surface may reveal the outline and relief of a ruin without identifying its masonry or surface decoration. In low visibility, use bathymetry for the reliable spatial framework and reserve photogrammetry for windows where image quality is demonstrably adequate.

Can sonar and photogrammetry be combined?
Yes, when the project has a reason to connect broad terrain to detailed structure. A practical combined workflow is:
- Acquire and quality-check a bathymetric surface covering the ruin and its surrounding context.
- Choose photogrammetry zones using the bathymetric relief, archaeological priorities and safe access routes.
- Survey photogrammetric scale bars or control points in the same spatial reference used for the bathymetry.
- Build and scale the image-derived models, then register them to the site framework using documented control and transformations.
- Publish the terrain surface and detailed models as distinct layers, with separate uncertainty and coverage statements.
The result is not a magically uniform data set. Acoustic terrain and image-derived geometry have different resolutions, error sources and visibility limits. Explain where the detailed model is measured, where it is interpolated and how it was aligned to the broader map.
Depth, hazards and access change the method
Depth, current, entanglement hazards, fragile artifacts and restricted access can make a diver’s camera route unsafe or incomplete. The Navy fieldwork guidance discusses remotely operated and autonomous platforms for broad, deep or hazardous investigations. An ROV can carry a camera and lights for photogrammetry, while an autonomous or vessel-mounted system can collect systematic bathymetry without placing a diver over the site.

Platform choice does not remove the need for planning. Tether management, vehicle stability, navigation latency, lighting geometry and the ability to hold a route near a wall all affect image overlap. For a large site, a vehicle may efficiently map context acoustically while a carefully piloted ROV records selected structures photographically.
Accuracy: what can and cannot be claimed
Do not declare a universal accuracy winner between bathymetry and photogrammetry. Accuracy is conditional on sensor, scale, control, water conditions, navigation, processing and the feature being measured. The National Park Service reports index lists a comparison of underwater structure-from-motion photogrammetry with real-time kinematic survey at the East Key Construction Wreck, but the available index entry does not expose numerical findings. The NPS report Assessment of Mechanical Scanning Sonar in the Documentation of Submerged Cultural Resources describes comparison with archaeological drawings and hull documentation, but it also should not be turned into a general percentage for every sonar survey.
A U.S. Geological Survey publication, Accurate bathymetric maps from underwater digital imagery without ground control, reports millimeter-to-centimeter-scale results in the specific study workflow using five rigidly mounted, downward-looking cameras synchronized with survey-grade GNSS. That result belongs to that platform and test setting; it should not be generalized to ordinary diver photography or every underwater ruin.
For your own project, state the measured check points, scale, coordinate reference, control method, residuals or independent checks, coverage gaps and the uncertainty appropriate to each product. If those values were not established, say so instead of implying survey-grade precision.
How to build a defensible documentation package
Before fieldwork
- Define the archaeological questions and the geographic extent.
- Obtain permits, permissions and safety approvals required for the jurisdiction and protected status of the site.
- Select bathymetric, photographic or combined methods based on depth, visibility, current, access and required scale.
- Choose coordinate and vertical reference systems, naming conventions, storage and backup procedures.
- Prepare calibration checks, scale bars or control targets, route plans and contingency plans for weather or visibility.
During acquisition
- Log date, time, platform, crew, sensor or camera, settings, water conditions, visibility, current and lighting.
- Monitor bathymetric coverage and navigation quality as lines are collected.
- For photography, maintain planned overlap and inspect images for blur, backscatter and hidden surfaces.
- Photograph scale bars or control points repeatedly and record their positions.
- Minimize contact with fragile structures and follow archaeological site-stewardship rules.
After acquisition
- Preserve raw sonar, navigation and image files with checksums or another documented integrity process.
- Process bathymetry and imagery with versioned settings and retain rejected data with reasons.
- Export products in usable formats with coordinate reference, dates, resolution, coverage and uncertainty.
- Keep a map of areas not surveyed or not visible.
- Archive enough metadata that a later team can repeat the route or explain why two dates differ.
Monitoring a ruin over time
Submerged archaeological sites can change through deterioration, salinity, pH, sediment erosion, currents and human disturbance, as NOAA notes in its photogrammetry material. A repeat survey is useful only when dates, reference systems, route or line planning, sensor configuration and processing choices are recorded consistently. Compare like with like: a broad bathymetric surface can reveal scour or sediment movement, while repeated photogrammetric models can expose cracking, displacement or loss of visible material in areas captured with comparable overlap and lighting.

When conditions or equipment change, document the change rather than forcing the outputs into a false time series. A model made from a different camera distance or with large visibility gaps may be valuable, but its comparability must be qualified.
Common failure modes and fixes
The bathymetric map has holes or noisy spikes
Check line spacing, vessel motion, navigation dropouts, sound-speed profiles, tide or water-level corrections and sensor calibration. Re-run quality control and resurvey gaps when practical; do not conceal them solely by interpolation.
The photogrammetry software will not align images
Look for motion blur, repetitive or featureless surfaces, excessive turbidity, backscatter, changing lighting and too little overlap. Capture slower, closer and more convergent passes, add visible scale or control targets and separate image groups that were taken under incompatible conditions.
The model looks detailed but has no trustworthy scale
Add measured scale bars or surveyed control points and report the coordinate reference. A visually convincing texture is not evidence of correct dimensions.
The two products do not line up
Check horizontal and vertical datums, sensor offsets, timing, control-point coordinates and any transformation between local and global frames. Keep acoustic terrain and image-derived geometry as separate products until their registration has been independently checked.
A camera survey misses the most important surfaces
Review the route against the ruin’s geometry. Overhangs, cavities, undersides and narrow passages require additional viewpoints; no processing method can reconstruct an occluded surface that was never photographed.
Decision guide
| If your primary requirement is… | Start with… | Add or reconsider… |
|---|---|---|
| A map of the ruin’s footprint and surrounding relief | Bathymetry with documented positioning, vertical reference and quality control. | Photogrammetry for selected structures that need visual detail. |
| Measured detail on accessible walls or objects | Underwater photogrammetry with scale and planned overlapping coverage. | Bathymetry if the model must be placed in a wider site context. |
| Broad coverage at depth or in a hazardous area | Vessel, ROV or autonomous bathymetric survey matched to the objective. | ROV photography where visibility and vehicle control permit. |
| Work in very poor visibility | Bathymetry for terrain and extent. | Small, close-range photogrammetric targets only where images can align reliably. |
| Repeat monitoring | The method whose route, controls and environmental conditions can be repeated. | The complementary method when change occurs at a different spatial scale. |
Bottom line for documenting underwater ruins
Use bathymetric mapping to answer where the ruin is, how it sits on the bottom and how its broader relief changes. Use underwater photogrammetry to answer what accessible, visible surfaces look like in a scaled image-based record. Combine them when the project needs both context and detail, but keep their outputs, controls and uncertainty statements distinct. The best method is the one that matches the archaeological question, environmental conditions, access and level of defensible measurement—not the one with the most impressive rendering.
